Well, Now Brett Kavanaugh Can Face His Accuser

I think it should be a federal offense if people don't vote in federal elections and should have to pay a fine or do short jail term if they don't vote in local/state elections and any citizen who does not vote should also be ineligible (until the next election) for any type of local/state/federal public assistance (and that's on top of taking a test).
You are an autocrat. ;)

Nahhh, I would NEVER take that stance, sorry. I get/understand why you feel that way (kinda like how I feel about the test), but like other things, just because someone has the “right” to do something, doesn’t mean they should, nor does it mean they must.

From your linked article: “This is, quite literally, how the process is designed to work, as guided by a bipartisan Judiciary Committee memorandum of understanding signed in 2009. Background investigations are not supposed to be made public -- in fact, it's against the law to do so. The limited number of people with access, the restrictions on public disclosure, even the number of copies provided, are all dictated by rules the committee agreed to nine years ago.

Wonder if Leahy is having a flashback ‘Biden’ moment about right now.

What worries me is what Kavanaugh being confirmed will do to younger people who have experienced sexual assault, don’t have insurance and have not received help with dealing with this. I’m concerned we will see a spike in suicides.

After reading the comments in this thread Saturday evening, the lack of compassion and empathy astounded me. If someone dealing with the pain of rape had people like this in their life, it isn’t a stretch to think the outcome would be a bad one.

@lovedogs , I know you are knowledgeable and have had experience helping people. Are you concerned about the impact a Kavanaugh confirmation could have?

Why are the most politically opinionated people I know also the ones who didn't even vote?

Do you have those same feelings for Keith Ellison's accuser who has been ignored by the Democrats Callie?

Yup, I am. Not because of my own beliefs about him (which everyone on this thread knows by now), but because of the message it sends to people who have been victimized. The rape crisis hotlines had a huge uptick in calls after the Ford testimony, and I think if he gets confirmed it's akin to telling those people "too bad, we don't care", which can lead to internalized guilt, shame, depression, etc. I am also nervous about the suicide rate. I have never been actively suicidal, but more than once over the past week I've found myself thinking, "I should just die". Not in an active crisis way, and I have the coping skills to handle those temporary thoughts, but if I feel that way I assume others do too (and much worse).

Shit. I missed that part.:lol::lol:

Not Callie, but I want that to be investigated, and definitely don't want it to be ignored. Just FWIW.

This is what the lawyer the DNC hired to "investigate" said about it the other day. The irony is amazing.

“An allegation standing alone is not necessarily sufficient to conclude that conduct occurred, particularly where the accusing party declines to produce supporting evidence that she herself asserts exists,” Ellingstad wrote. “She has thus repeatedly placed the existence of the video front and center to her allegations, but then has refused to disclose it.”

I know people say on Facebook who have gone quiet, because watching Ford and Kavanaugh's testimony was traumatizing to them due to their own history. This whole confirmation hearing is bringing up many old wounds for people. It is certainly not healing for some people individually, or for our country as a whole. I want a scotus I can respect, and trust. There is always going to be a cloud over Kavanaugh, which casts a pall over the supreme court and its ruling. Society exists because there is rule of law, and if people lose trust that these courts are fair and inpartial, it erodes society. Everyone wants to feel like they will get a fair hearing. And if you can't get that with the highest court of the land, what does that say about us?

I believe that Kavanaugh will get nominated. Not because he is the best candidate, or he is right and Ford is wrong, but because all of us little peoples' opinions, and the facts of the matter, never mattered in the first place.

Do you want a justice on the SCOTUS bench that "feels" evidence is irrelevant and uncorroborated testimony is enough?

Of course I do @redwood66 . I know you don’t seem to believe me when I say this, but this isn’t political for me. This hurts me to my soul,

No, which is exactly why I don't want Kavanaugh on the bench. He spouted conspiracy theories in his defense, and spent many a long hour trying to prove Hillary Clinton had an affair with Vince Foster and killed him. He is an ideologue, the opposite of what you want making judicial decisions. It's exactly why over 1200 law experts feels he is not qualified to be on the SCOTUS bench, and exactly the same concerns why his previous appointment was held up. It doesn't matter if you have right leaning, or left leaning views, as long as you can still weigh the facts and use legal basis to judge. The law experts who signed that letter feel that he is unable to do that. And that's his job.

If I were in Kav’s shoes, and I was called to a supplemental hearing to address serious, criminal accusations being publicly launched at me with ZERO evidence and/or corroboration, AFTER having my name, reputation and family drug through the mud like he did not to mention death threats ... yea - I’d probably be wondering about the motives of the very people who pushed such a sham of a hearing in the first place, and I’d call them out on it as well. And I don’t mean Ford.

Out of curiosity, are you referring to Plan B, STD testing and such?

Cop out. That is a total cop out (love those 60s hipster terms ;-) ) We need a license to do things, yes the right to vote is a RIGHT but I highly doubt those framers, those guys would be okay with an uniformed voter, since they would certainly be okay with guns for all and all for guns, that we all need a gun to protect each other from who? from each other!!! ha!

There is of course a right to be dumb! So there is a right to be an educated snob and people should get over it right? right.

I am going to disagree with both of you on this test thing. While I want people to be involved and knowledgeable of the issues when voting, I do not want their right hindered in any way to have a say in the government that affects their lives. Now it is a requirement that someone be a US citizen to vote so voter ID laws should be in place. JMHO.

Good because I think the democrats should call out and investigate the lies Kavanaugh stated under oath.. Lucky for us democrats we know WHAT Kavanaugh's motives are: to limit our rights in the name of 'FRAMERS'. Seriously when the House is democratic I can't wait.

I don't even know how to respond to this gobble-d-gook.

What are you talking about?? we all get ID's when we are born. Our social security card MOT, you now that, it's not hard, and you can get one if you lose it, I got 3, my first one, my 1st marriage name and my 2nd marriage name. We all have IDs. I don't now what the heck you mean about cigarettes and beer? you cannot fly without an ID so if one is required to have a picture ID one has their license and one can get a state ID in NY anyway, if one cannot get there because of zero ability to get there then the Feds should pick them up or go to their house. My brother is a veteran and he get's FREE transportation to and from his place, because he served 4 years in the navy, not in war time, but they pick him up and drop him off.. he get's free stuff, etc. We could find money to pick up poor people (and my brother is poor also, he just get's tons of free stuff).

FTR - I don’t disagree! I would LOVE to see a test (along with mandatory ID) before someone can vote. But the mantra by the left is that requiring someone to get an ID to vote somehow disenfranchises them, yet it doesn’t seem to stop these same ‘voters’ from buying beer & cigs, flying, etc. So you must imagine my surprise that you’d go even further than many conservatives’ stance of just simply requiring an ID to do it.

I know you are intelligent Red, try.

ETA:

Okay I will explain it to you. Your reply is a cop out, if you don't know what that means then google will research it. The second part was a wink, I was kidding. We need licenses for everything - that means that we need to get a permit and pass a test to drive, to kill animals, we need to register our cars etc. The joke was about gun advocates who love their guns and use the 'framers' as a model to allow us to have full blown arsenals at home (not me of course as I would never have a gun at home, but that is me).

And as you stated if there is a right to be dumb and those who don't educate themselves should be allowed to do so. So I asked, if a person is educated and a snob do they also have the same right? not to be called out? You did say you love when democrats call stupid voters dumb? correct?

And we Republicans know exactly what the Democrats motives were all along as well - delay, delay, delay ... get payback for Garland ... prevent Trump from carrying out his campaign promises, etc.

Thankfully, the polls are showing that your wish for a Dem-led house/senate don’t appear to be coming anytime soon.

Thank you for responding Lovedogs. This past week has been extremely painful for me. Much of it has to do with how this will affect younger people without a lot of life experience. I know how I felt the months afterward and I worry about how someone will handle this on their own if they have no support.

Yes and WE DEMOCRATS know exactly WHY you want a liar like Kavanaugh on the court. End abortion, allow gerrymandering, support the rich, allow religion in schools, charter schools.. we know.

the senate will change n 2020, not that many senators are up this year, but one never knows about BETO, TX has a lot of colleges and BETO hit everyone of them.

The polls I read: Cooke Report and 538 show the House flipping and and a 1 in 4 chance for the Senate. Where are you getting your info?

@the_mother_thing

I still have not gotten a clear and cohesive answer why even if you are Republican, why you would want to confirm someone to the bench that, when so many regular people and the majority of people in the field of law, when they saw Kavanaugh's testimony, had the response that this person is unfit to judge. And by confirming him, will undermine people's belief and trust that the highest law of the land, is a fair court. He was unhinged. He perjured himself, multiple times. I don't know why this is so difficult to understand why, when he testified he showed that he does not deserve this nomination. No one owes him the nomination. He needs to deserve it. And he does not. He could have been honest under oath, answering truthfully. He chose not to.

Red, Mother thing, let me ask you this. You are in charge of a large corporation. you have a position that is very important, but also very sensitive and demands rigor, cool-headness, discretion, and interacting with the public. Some troubling things come up in his vetting process and you interview him about it. The candidate acts as Kavanaugh acted. Dissembles and doesn't answer questions directly. Throws questions you ask back in your face. Yells. Would you hire that person? I'm betting the sure as hell not.

If you’re going to lay out a scenario, and least keep all the scenarios in alignment.

Now, if the candidate came in for the first interview and just went “off the reservation” (absent the accusations), then duh ... but that is entirely different than what happened to Kav. And you know it, even if you won’t admit it.
