What is fair price for estate Tiffany sapphire ring?

There's an antique one here, with a stone almost 13 carats, and the Bonhams auction estimate is 40 to 60K. See lot 95. Good price estimate actually, but the stone is three times as large. I wonder how much it went for.

It sold for $93,750.00

This is still a fair price for this ring, provenance, designer, the sapphire size and quality, etc. . .

The price for the new ring is outrageous IMHO, even with the Tiffany name.

Therefore, second hand, you should be able to get a much better deal as the Bonhams auction exemplified. I wonder how much that ring the OP wanted would bring at auction if a beautifully saturated stone almost 13 carats, with designer AND Tiffany provenance, brought a little less than twice as much as the sale price of this 4.2 carat sapphire ring.

Not everyone purchases a piece of jewelry with an eye to reselling it (I never have) .
What about their heirs? I would never pay for a provenance without reputable paperwork because at some point, someone may want to recoup the value they paid for the provenance, the original buyer, or their heirs.
My estate plan provides for my son and my handicapped nephew in other ways. I think the legatees of my jewelry will value them for the same reason I treasure what I've inherited... because they were loved by people who matter to me (and jive with my tastes). If I'm wrong about that & they decide to sell their bequests because their current, seeming fondness for the items isn't genuine or dissipates over time, what they recoup matters not to me.

But honestly, I don't know why you are arguing with me about this. I'm not seeking to impose my perspective on anyone, simply observing how, as kenny often says, "people vary."

Well said. I couldn't agree more. Even if I were to purchase an expensive piece of jewelry because I loved it, I doubt very much I would make a big effort to "for provenance's sake" to keep all records so that some day, some relative would have an easier time selling it. I would buy for me, not the future. If I was buying with them in mind, then I would just buy for them outright. :))

Ehhh.....you guys are making me look bad. I have a stack of gemstone and setting receipts, all neatly arranged by vendor in a folder.

I'm not arguing at all. I respect your opinion, as I would hope you would mine. I am just providing an opinion. It just happens not to agree with yours, and that's fine.

The OP needs as much knowledge as possible to make a potentially expensive purchase, and opinions are very helpful in this manner, even if they vary.

Yeah, its funny, I keep tabs of my stones - or try to - with multiple spreadsheets. Just not the same with my settings. Don't get me wrong, I throw the receipts in a heap in the drawer in my closet... :twirl: :cheeky:

Thanks for all your input. I don't LOVE it enough I guess... i like darker stones like this, but looking for a more elongated stone 4-5 cts. The hunt continues...

But not an oval, right? (Not sure if I've confused you in my mind with another PSer)

I would do oval or cushion... I just don't want a round.
