Where to buy grape garnet or good rubellite

I just purchased this ring at an auction, mainly because I like the setting (the diamonds may not be the highest quality but love this kind of snowflake cluster). Haven't yet received the ring (vendor's picture) but plan to replace the centre stone with another. I am thinking grape garnet or rubelite tourmaline (a spinel that size will be too expensive...). Any ideas where I could get either of these? Seems to be difficult to find purple garnet. AJS seem to have some but too pricey. Rubelite is easier to find but haven't seen ones that are the quality of some I've seen on PS.

Or if you have any stone suggestion for the setting, let me know!

Also any advice on swapping stones on settings, please feel free to share.Lot 667.jpg

I bought my pastel pyrope garnet from earthstreasury.com
It’s purple most of the time, with some colour change to hot pink.
The ones currently on his website don’t seem to show this, but you can inquire for additional photos.

Whats the center stone's dimensions? You'll be limited to stones of similar size/shape.

premiergemstones on IG has had some nice purple garnets (not the famous Mozambique material though), they are based in NC, USA and post pricing info in posts which is appreciated. I never used them, not sure if anyone here has.
Example:
Not everyone's cup of tea but I love these Congo tourmalines with shades of purple, pink, brown, orange etc:

Actually a colour change garnet would also be nice but these days they're pretty hard to find!

On no, wait, I can see a few on the website!

Have you seen this thread, @JewelledEscalators ?

For rubellite Starlanka has a large inventory. I recall a PSer was happy with a paraiba from them.

Jeff White has some beautiful pyrope garnets...

I had a look but could only see very limited number of items on sale in general - does he have an inventory that's not online?

They do have a good selectin don't they? I'm having a good look through. Will have to check the size of the stone once the ring arrives.

You can also keep a eye on LT.
Not always - but often enough-
After a looking for /want to buy thread is done on PS
There’s a certain vendor (who ironically doesn’t like PS) I suppose takes notice and magically a few of those stones that were asked about appear for sale on LT! :)

That's great.

I just learnt the ring won't be arriving till mid next week :(2

I might check with Yvonne Raley. She probably doesn’t have it in stock, but if she’s going to Tucson can look for you.

@JewelledEscalators I am just horrid at taking photos of my transparent/faceted gems, as they never seem to turn out anything like the stone in person. But I can try tomorrow when I have some daylight. So, yes, it does shift colors depending on the light source. In daylight or fluorescent light, it is a true royal purple with flashes of violet/blue. Under incandescent, it is a warmer berry tone with strong red flashes. This material is a winner, and I feel like it should be more expensive!

My ring has arrived. Looks lovely. Stupid question I know, but do I need to get a caliper to measure the exact size of the stone, and also how do I measure the depth? Does it matter if it's say half a mm under or over?

I bought my grape garnet at AJS... couldn't be happier. Good luck with your ring!!

I drool every now and then over AJS grape garnets, but can't stomach their pricing even with 15-20% off. Jealous of your stone :kiss2:

OP, this store has had grape garnet in the past, lower pricing, and they have a 'special request' option so maybe they can source more.
I have never used them. Hopefully they can get a trusted lab report for what they sell.

This vendor has also been on my radar and has some purple garnets.

Yes, me too, I do drool over the AJS stones but it feels a tad too high. In any case, I don't think any of their purple garnets will fit my setting.

Thanks for the other links!

I have recently received a mahenge garnet from Precision Gems that tends toward the purple/pink, attached. May reach out to see if there is more rough? It's extremely lively.

Jim McCormick, a/k/a elvizprasiolite (on Etsy and IG) has/had both grape purple garnets and a purple tourmaline that might be of interest.20220127_165644.jpg20220127_135320.jpg

Probably not the right stone for this ring but gorgeous color change purple to red mahenge

Ooh, didn't see this post, thanks! Not getting alerts for some reason.

another potential vendor, @gilyuda, with Mozambique grape garnet. They claim it is high quality material. Maybe they could cut one to your needs.
They've had these two, around 2ct each and under 400$ each
As always practice caution with IG vendors.

I've bought from him - great quality and VERY competitive pricing

Thanks. The colour is quite magenta - I wonder if that's more the norm with grape garnets? I prefer the slightly cooler colours like the AJS stones but I seem to see the magenta types more often.
