Who got Barry new red garget??

Oh no, iLander, don't be sorry, be happy, you deserve it! I wasn't trying to guilt trip - just wanting you to know - as if you didn't already - how special a stone you have. Please I want to see the big "bubble gum" ring when you have pics...

So did anyone else snag anything from Barry's drop?

I would have loved to snatch up either the mint tourmaline or the supernova rhodolite.

I actually like the iolite a lot too (apropos of our other thread), but the "slight haziness" is stopping me.

Then try this iolite: http://mastercutgems.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=5967

His description: "I love the color but most of the time the rough is not cost effective as it never seems to line up correctly for the good color. This one did." So I think that is his way of saying it's great for iolite.

Dana takes terrible pictures (I think this is not news to him :D ) but his stones are really wonderful in RL.

Ooh, nice find, too expensive for me right now though. I'm not really looking, so it would have to be super-cheap (like Barry's for $65).

iLander, lucky you!
Please please do let us know when you get the red garnet...

btw, Do you think there is any chance that it will go back?
Because I'm the second in line...the little evil is just shouting within me...
:naughty: :naughty:

Sorry, babydoll, I know how difficult and painful the search is, I've been doing it too. I have a bunch of feelers out there with other cutters and if anything else turns up, I'll post it and let you know.

Does yours have to be round? Art Cut Gems has an oval sunstone that looks very red, but mine had to be round.

When I was emailing Barry (after the newsletter) he said he had to put it on the site update because otherwise he would get in big trouble and he refused to sell it to me directly. So, there's a lot to be said for his integrity in giving us all a shot at it.

There's always a possibility that it will go back. I'll post and let you know.

Dear iLander, don't be sorry, I really mean it. I'm happy for you anyway if you decide to keep it ;)
I will keep looking and learn to be more determined and quick handed next time

I said that I would mention it if I came across any other red, red, stones, so I just saw this:

http://www.litnon.com/index.php?page=view&cat=274

The red anthill pyrope has high chrome like the stone that I got (see Bubblegum ring post), but I'm not sure how big the finished stones will be. If you need a faceter, Jerry will cut other people's rough: http://www.gemartservices.com/

Also, saw this one a while back, but it was a titch too small for me:

http://www.gemrite.com/cubecart/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=256

And this is what John at Gemrite had to say about it:
The stone is bright ruby red under sunlight, incandescent light and
fluorescent light as well. This one it shifts to a red with slight
orange is the blue looking daylight fluorescent lights. They are not
used a whole bunch since it has a funny blue color to the light. The
fluorescent light it may have a pinch of orange but it is extremely
difficult to see it in the stone. The stone looks red all light
settings, just in the daylight fluorescent it has a slight orange.
Also the stone is not a saturated color like most red stones are so you get a bright
and brilliant stone even in the lower light settings.

So, maybe one of these will work out for others that are seeking a red stone. :D

Dear, thank you for the recommendations~!
Barry is still trying to cut me another red garnet, so I'm still hoping to get one like yours.

And I also saw the one from Gemrite, I think the cutting pattern is very nice, however, I'm concerned about the saturation level.
I really like some red as saturated as your BB garnet.

Thank you very much again! And congraturations!!

iLander:

Thank you! Yes, I saw that one but I've now moved on and am hoping that Barry's other blue/green tourm comes back from the lab and I like it. By the way, Barry has ordered more red garnet rough from South Africa (I think he said, which, come to think of it, puzzles me as he said that your garnet was an anthill garnet) and believes it will arrive in a few weeks. So if anyone is interested, now's the time to be in touch...

Who will be making the bubblegum ring?

Probably me, in my own cheap and cheesy manner.

I can buy a solitaire setting from Tripps, pop it in, and bend the little prongs myself.

They have a video on you tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxIZ0tprsL4

I have the Tripps kit, and it's not rocket surgery.

Which is why I can't figure out how so many "professionals" mess up people's stones!

I think I'll wait a while, though. I'm enjoying looking at it in the gem case.

Why do you ask? Do you have an idea? :appl:

Well it IS a bubblegum ring,

I think it is cool you can set it yourself. Do you have a bubblegum machine to use for a photo shoot?!

I gotta say that this thread just makes me smile.

:))

I was looking around the internet and found this pic of a bubblegum machine ring...
I think it looks way cool. Then I found this on ebay. But your probably going to do something simpler and in yellow gold. Just poking around basically.

OOOOH, I like that ebay setting, very nice! :cheeky: I'll definitely think about that one, it's very "bubblegum".

And the pictures are definitely right: big, blingy, childish, no fussy halos or fancy engraving here! Sometimes you can find more examples on ebay under "vending ring".

Here is the ACTUAL bubblegum ring that I am trying to replace. Yup, still have it, how weird is that? :twirl:

To duplicate it exactly, I'm thinking even a regular solitaire setting might be too fancy. I may need a jeweler to solder a head on a cheesy little 2mm shank.

And then I think the stone might deserve something better, so I'm actually kind of conflicted. . .
