Will this make a nice reception dress?

Hello!

I''m really interested in getting a reception dress and I really like this one, but am not sure if it''s too casual for my event. It''s a Saturday late afternoon ceremony and evening reception. The venue is a bit formal to be honest; with its statue gardens and castle on the property. The dress is by Suzi Chin. I also want to know if it''ll match my shoes. I posted the shoes here:

I''m open to any opinions. Thanks!

A picture of the dress from the back. Thanks again!

It''s so pretty!!! Lovely!!!!

Personally, I think it''s a little too casual for an evening reception.

That''s what I was afraid of and why I''ve been hesitant to buy it. I''m having difficulty finding a nice white or ivory knee to mid-calf length dress that doesn''t look too casual. Anyone have any suggestions?

I agree that the dress is a little too casual-- not only for the event, but for those shoes (which are un-freakin-believable!!!)

Really cute- from Nordstroms

Oohhh... That is pretty. You know, I was considering that dress, but wasn''t sure if it was more of a cocktail dress. I think it''s time to go to Nordstrom and try it on. Thanks ice-queen!

It''s really cute, but would a short dress be too informal?

If so, you can always scale it up with some killer chandelier earrings ...

Yeah, I was worried about that too, but I didn''t want to be stuck in a long dress all night, especially when it''s time to get down and dance...

Chandelier earrings do sound nice though... And another reason to keep me shopping!

I agree that this particular dress might be a little too casual, too. It is the fabric I have issue with, but I also think with it there would be a really good chance that one of your guests would have a nicer dress on than you, and I am guessing you wouldn''t want this.

It did, though, in style, make me immediately think of this Vineyard bridesmaid dress that I was thinking about for my reception dress. It comes in ivory, silver, gold, and champagne. It looks very nice in person and is satin, so the heavier fabric, in my opinion, would make it look more formal and "cocktail" versus just a dress.

Love your shoes, btw!

The pop of blue is amazingly bridal. Yay for another CL bride!

I think too casual for reception... but AWESOME for Rehearsal Dinner or Day after Brunch!!!

katamiari- Good call on looking more casual than a guest. You definitely DON'T want that! Fabric with more structure will give it a more formal feel.

I have seen this in ivory and it''s gorgeous!

Thanks katamari and meresal. That is a great point about the fabric. With that said, I''ll scrap the first dress I posted and start fresh. I didn''t even realize Priscilla of Boston had a shop in NYC so guess where I''m going tomorrow? LOL!

OUpeargirl - I checked the link, but didn''t see the dress in ivory. Did you see it in the store?

This Romona Keveza is cute:

I did a web search on "short wedding dress" and found tons of gorgeous stuff [too much to post since I don't know the details of your wedding or what shape looks good on you]. You may want to start there to narrow down the look you want and then hit the shops.

I would stick with weddingy fabric and details - that should give you the formality you are looking for in spite of the short length.

Okay, after revamping my search, here''s a couple more dresses that I need opinions on. Please be gentle... LOL! I''m not good at picking out formal wear.

It looks too informal to me for an evening reception. AAMOF, I was about to post it for the person that was looking for a suit to wear for a midday wedding!

Hmmm... Trying to, but I''m having some difficulty finding things I like. For example, I''ve never been a formal wear kind of person, as a matter of fact, I didn''t even have a dress in my wardrobe until a few month ago. And it seems that whatever I deem formal (or close to it), most others find it informal. I''ll follow the advice and stick with satin (and maybe tafetta?) for my fabric and continue the search. Is silk also considered a formal fabric?

Yes, silk can be formal.

Have you picked your wedding dress? If you have can you post a pic and tell us what you like about it? That should help us pick something that might work.

DiamanteBlu, thank you for all you help. Here''s my dress. And here''s a link to me wearing the dress: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/which-dress.107631/

The first thing that caught my eye about this dress was its shape. It''s very flattering, especially since I have an hourglass shape. I also fell in love with the button in the back (it comes all the way down the dress). Now, the wedding dress has a really long train. And even bustled, it''s a bit much to wear for the reception. Hence, the need for a shorter dress.

Gorgeous dress! You look great in it!

I'll go do some research to see what I can find.

Off the wall thought . . . Is it possible to alter the dress so you can detach the lower, flared out part of the skirt and the train? That will leave you with the hourglass-hugging part of the dress. It the front is too short you could add some fabric [similarly draped and also detachable]. I can't quite tell if this is an option from the pics. If it is it should be a more cost effective option than getting a whole second dress.

While the dress is really pretty, I agree it is too casual for a formal affair. I think you really should stick with something floor length! This is a personal favorite of mine (Nordstrom) that I am thinking about purchasing in another color. But had I done a destination beach wedding, this would have been mine! Not to mention it is under $200!

Never thought about having the dress alerted, but I''ll definitely ask at my next fitting.

Izzy03 - That dress is gorgeous! I was thinking of staying with full length, but sort of want to show off the shoes too.

Yeah, yeah, call me crazy...

I keep coming back to this dress. I think it would look great on you!

Truly, I just can''t imagine wearing that wedding dress the half hour or so that a wedding lasts and that''s it! I''d definitely wear it for the evening, formal reception! You''re the bride!!!!

No, actually a bride brought it into our store looking for shoes. But she got it at the local Cache in the mall. I couldn''t find it in white either but I''ve seen it in person and it''s soooo pretty!
