Would you buy an estate engagement ring?

I would wear an estate ring. I love old diamonds, and would LOVE to have an old cut ring. Plus, if you can get what you want and save some money, well, it just doesn't get much better than that.

We bought an estate ring to use the diamond to make a second e-ring for me. Why not? especially when they can be bought for sometimes silly prices.

I just recently acquired an estate e-ring, as a replacement ring for my original ring that had been stolen a few years ago. Back when DH and I were engaged (25 years ago this Christmas) I wanted an antique e-ring, but never found one I really liked...so got a maul store ring... :knockout: Anyway, I found this one on JbEG and am very pleased with it...feels like I have always had it and I love the history too. I wonder what this ring has 'seen' over the years and wonder a lot about the woman (women) who wore it and what they were like. But I love history anyway, so it's a no brainer for me to love an antique ring too!

My ring is an estate ring and I love it!

I love the history behind older pieces and the prices are usually great, so why not?

I wouldn't have anything close to the ring my SO bought if we hadn't bought an estate/vintage piece. I'll post a pic of it. Many of the PSer's already know the story, but it was sold to me as a 1.6 H VS2 transitional cut diamond in a circa 1930 setting. We paid under 5k for it (I had lots of great pics, experience with older pieces and talked to many PS vendors who I'm friendly with about it) and we pulled the trigger. It appraised as a 1.64 H VVS1 and it was almost ideal cut (I'm thinking the stone is a late transitional that just happened to be well cut) and the value was 25k! I looked up the specs on a few vendor sites and only one pulled up similar and it was a WF stone. The price tag on it was 19k.

So yes, I am very happy with my estate ring and even though I never thought I'd have a round (I love OMC and OEC) I'm very blessed to have such an amazing piece and I never could have it we hadn't bought estate. I also never would have bought anything with specs that high (I love the price point of lowered colored stones, the warmth and I'm okay with eye clean) so it also gave me a chance to own something that I never would have paid the premium for either.

i did. the prices tipped me over

Absolutely! I adore vintage styling, especially Deco and Edwardian (my all-time favorite!) designs. I'm also an old-cut nut, so for me it would be a yes.

I also wonder about the history of the pieces. What was life like back when a piece was new, what was the lady who's finger the ring first graced like, how many children idly played with her rings while she rocked them, if any, what events took place that the ring was sold, etc.

That was an amazing story about the value in the end! You scored with that and it's gorgeous!

Do you see your H as white in the daylight/ cloudy days?
(I am considering H trans cut).....

Also, question#2, do u think it would look funny if i put the H color trans round in Tacori's 2620 (or copy of it)?

Thanks!!

Like any stones not all transitional cut are created equal. The one that I have is closer to a round brilliant and ideal cut than most transitional cuts are, but you can find some amazing check board patterns that are beautiful (I'm attaching a picture of one that I love the pattern of it isn't my stone). An H stone in a transitional cut may show more warmth than my ring does because mine does show arrows, which is unusual for that time period. In fact, my stone may be an modern RB that was just set in a vintage setting. I don't know because I don't know the history of the ring, it did come with the original box that dates around the 1930-1940's though, which leads me to believe it was just a well cut transitional cut for that time period.

That being said I believe an H colour will be fine. My H colour faces up really white and clear compared to my J coloured stones (although this is from memory, not side comparison) but my J coloured AVC was no less beautiful than the my RB. I haven't worn my RB out and about yet because we aren't yet engaged, but I haven taken it out to play with around the house and a little outside and it was beautiful.

Here is the tranny that I love and another pic of my ring below it. This is from the side so you can see if you can see any colour or not. My couch is a light tan so it may be reflecting in the poor lighting of my apt some color.

And as far as how you want to set it...Tacori makes amazing pieces that are look beautiful no matter the center stone. Although if your looking for a certain one you should hunt ebay and even Jewelsbyericagrace because they have a few tacori that are way less than the retail price for the pieces. However if your fine paying for the name then go for it. Another option would be beverly k or if you like a few different rings you can go custom. The point of the matter is it's your ring, your rock, your finger. If it makes you happy it doesn't matter what it looks like to anyone else, if it makes your heart sing then rock it!
