AJ that is an awesome find! good job finding it! the stone looks fab and the baguettes are so gorgeous!

if you are looking to unload the bags, i''ll buy them from you! Hee, i would love to make a baguette eternity out of those.

i noticed the ring you bought looks exactly like johnawesley''s ring, picture wise and specs too. you can see his ring in the men''s ring folder on page 9.

Oh WOW! milly, great eyes, I''d never opened that thread..
That is, indeed the ring and that is the seller..John..
Oh, I had no idea he knew about PS..
Well, John if you are reading you know how much I appreciated
doing business with you and how much I am enjoying my new diamond(s). Thanks John!!!

Thanks Milly for bringing that to my attention, and also for your comments - I will update my plans for the baguettes once they are returned to me..
Fi isn''t particularly fond of them for a men''s ring, so we''ll see

AJ,

We actually found your O.E.C ring that you bought from us on Ebay, on Ebay ourselves for $3,750.00, so we only took a $658.00 loss, so not too bad and it went to a much deserving woman.

As everyone has said, it was a heck of a find for both you and ourselves and there are good deals to find on Ebay.

Our top find, that I never told you about was buying a bag of mixed gemstones on Ebay for $200.00. The seller Scraps the Gold for melt, and either Didn't look at the stones nor test them, or it was put in there by mistake.

Upon looking at the gems and testing them with our Diamond tester, we found a 1.32ct Asscher cut Diamond that was SI2 clarity and J colour. It appraised for $4,200.00. There is a picture of it On Pricescope under happycamper or show me the ring, men's rings. We had it set in the ring you can see pictured on page 3.

So, the Diamond only cost us 2 cents, so that's the best find EVER!!!

I wish you good luck on the Diamonds and ring. Please let us all know what you end up doing with them. Diamonds are awesome!!

Be well my friend,

John.... johnawesley

Sorry for the minor threadjack A.J, but I just have to express my profound admiration for Coati's ring. Is there a thread for that stunner?

he he, no worries SS - I can completely relate to all profound admiration for Coati's fab bezel, it's really just delicious :lickout:

You're very welcome, m'dear!

The brushed finish will be bolder/deeper in 24k, but I think you could get a nice soft brushed texture similar to the one on your JM in 18k. It would be more subtle, but really beautiful with the design you've chosen. So let's see, peachy gold, med polish, with some variety of brushed finish?...sounds perfect!!

eta: whoa, that's a long quote! haha --learning how to post on the new PS!

Hey lovey - I know, quote trails look a lot longer on new PS!

Thank you for the extra info - I wonder how much cost it would add to have an 18k ring dipped in 22k..I will have to see. ::)

Hopefully not too much longer until I can send the diamond off for setting now :appl:

Have a great weekend hon :wavey:

What a beautiful OEC and at such a great deal!!! Have you decided how you're going to set it? I just acquired an OEC on eBay as well and am so conflicted on what to do about the setting.

Hello panda,
I am pretty sure I will go with the 8 prong solitaire option discussed in this thread...and, depending on the availability of alloys and finishes with the chosen vendor, hopefully have a peachy gold with some kind of a brushed finish as Coati mentioned above...
however, I'm really trying not to rush this setting decision as I have a tendency to do that.
There are *so many* different styles / designs I admire, so I can relate to feeling conflicted.!

What are the specs on your OEC, does it have a thread? I would love to see it :))

Hey John,
thanks for joining the thread and great to see you posting some more :wavey: (I have also just replied to your email).

Thank you for sharing your amazing ebay find story, I went and looked up the thread and you really did have amazing luck with that one.
I think your asscher story pips my OEC one when talking bargain ebay finds for sure !

You best be careful or else I will start hassling you for the names of the sellers you get these great bargains from ;))

Take care, and thanks again for listing the stone it has found a very happy home.

Ah, yes, I was having a brain fart! I saw the pic of that 8 prong solitaire you posted in this thread. Should look awesome in a peachy gold! Have you started the process yet?

My OEC is 2.94 J SI1/SI2 (I got conflicting opinions on the clarity) but it's eye clean. It has slight blue flour so it faces up more like an I :D I'll try to get a couple of pics. My photog skills are no where near yours!

Hello Panda,

ah wow, I am officially envious - what a great size! It sounds like an excellent find, I can't wait to see some pics.
Do you have any direction / ideas for the setting and will this be a RHR?

lol, I'm terrible..as soon as I've told you I'm going with the 8 prong, there's a chance I'll go in a completely different direction

Another PSer was nice enough to put me in touch with an excellent jeweller that is closer to my part of the world (Australia), so it may make more sense than sending the OEC to the US for setting this time..But we shall see.
Of course, I will update. ::)

I am thrilled with my eBay find, as I've been hunting around for a LONG time! I don't have any good pics but I attached one from my appraiser. It's totally boring compared to your lovely pics, as it's just in a plain background in a light box. However, I love how it shows the kozibe effect of the stone

This is going to be my upgraded ering, probably forever, as I don't think I can wear anything larger on my 4.75 finger without looking too silly; plus DH will kill me if I ask for another. I've looked at a LOT of settings for ideas and am still torn. I wear a solitaire now. I love it's simplicity because I can wear it with everything but there are times when I want something with a litte more oomph. I'd love a vintage setting that's not too ornate, as I think it would really compliment the OEC. However, I worry about whether the setting will stand the test of time like a solitaire would so I still think about doing another solitaire. I'm indecisive, I know! ::) What do you think?

Oooh, what's your new setting idea?

oh WOW! Panda, no wonder you are thrilled - she is a complete beauty!!  :appl:

And if that is an appraiser's 'non-glamour' shot, I can only imagine how pretty it must really be.

I agree, a 3ct will be massive on your lil finger..
oh hon, I don't know if I can be of much help with settings  I love so many different styles at the moment.
How about a discrete 3 or 5 stone, LM-esque style..with quite small-ish side diamonds.

That way, you get the classic-ness of a solitaire but with a tad more interest / sparkle..?
Those styles have been around for decades and I feel are pretty timeless, so I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect..

But I hear you, I love a good solitaire too.
Am I correct your current solitaire is an LM?

You must start your own thread on this beauty - I would be more than happy to come over and post setting photos to discuss..do you like any of the signature settings by JBEG? I think it's lovely these are designed specifically with vintage stones in mind, kwim?

Oh, I don't actually have a new setting idea yet..I am just waiting for some drawings from a jeweller, than we'll see. ::)

So AJ, what's the verdict? :naughty:

OMG I am so jealous!!! =) =) =)

I would reset it with the side stones into a woman's ring in a hearbeat!!!! Sorry I only read the 1st page so you might have decided to do this already.

Way to go on the find! :appl: :appl: :appl:

Whatever happened with your OEC?? Did you reset it?

HEY AJ,

HERE IS A 1.38CT OLD EUROPEAN CUT DIAMOND, THAT I BOUGHT IN A LADIES RING, ADVERTISED AS A 1.25CT OLD EUROPEAN CUT DIAMOND, BUT WHEN MY JEWELER WENT TO SET IT INTO MY MEN'S MOUNTING, IT WEIGHTED UP AT 1.38CTS. ALWAYS BETTER TO GET BIGGER!!

I HAD IT SET INTO A 9 GRAM 14KT GOLD MEN'S SETTING AND IT'S SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL.

THIS SHOWS PICTURED THE I3 CLARITY 1.66CT DIAMOND MOUNTED IN THE MEN'S SETTING AS IT WAS BEFORE, SO HE HAD TO DO CUSTOM WORK ON THIS SETTING FOR ME. HE MADE IT SO THAT THE DIAMOND CAN SIT LOW, BUT STILL GET IN PLENTY OF LIGHT FOR THE FIREWORKS SHOW.

I HAVE POSTED A BEFORE WITH THE MEN'S 1.66CT BOTTOM OF A FISHBOWL AS I CALL IT DIAMOND, AND THE NEW DIAMOND IN THE REWORKED SETTING...

NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE....

:wavey:

seen the new modified Julia Bezel by JbEG...??

I know you were looking at prongs - but check out the new bezel option - your sparkly baby would sure look pretty in there!!

AJ,

I agree that Bezel set would be the way to go for you. This Ring is Bezel set but my Jeweler put the bezel under the Diamond and used smaller prongs at the top to hold the Diamond in Place. You can see from the before pictures of the 1.66ct I3 Diamond, that the mount did not let much light into the Diamond.

He fixed that with the new 1.38ct Si2 Diamond, by not enclosing the Diamond in a full bezel and ground out some of the gold under the Diamond to allow full light into it, re-coated the surface with Rhodium, and I give you Fireworks!!!

Hey everyone - thanks for the new posts.
Just a quick update - I have been away for the week for a work trip, in an area called Arnhem Land in the remote Northern Territory of Australia, for an Indigenous cultural exchange festival called Garma (link)

I have just gotten back to semi-civilization in an NT town called Nhulunbuy where I will be for a couple days before flying back
to Perth..

I look forward to catching up on all your posts - I do have a setting design in the works with a New Zealand jeweller, which I will be pursuing once back to my regular life ::)

Right now it feels like I am almost in a different country, it is so foreign to my regular routine in the city; and perhaps it is sacrilege to say so but after camping in the bush for 5 days I am finding it odd to contemplate jewellery - don't worry, I'll get back to normal quickly
but I have been having a wonderful time. I have taken many many photos and I will start a thread in hangout when I'm back. ::)

John - thanks for posting your pics of your new find, it is a very attractive ring -is this the same bargain diamond you were referring to earlier?
I hope you don't mind the suggestion, although I am always keen to see your photos perhaps you would be better served to begin your own thread so that others can enjoy them too who may not visit my thread..? :)) And to answer your query, I just use a basic Sony point n shoot for my pics; I wish I had a better camera/ knew how to use a DSLR - something for the future..,my model is called a DSC-T200. Hope that helps

Hi Heli -
I went on the site but can't seem to find it, do you have a pic?

Just quickly, the design I have worked out with Klewis's wonderful jeweller that he was kind enough to refer me to, Robinson Designer Goldsmiths of Auckland New Zealand; is part bezel, part prongs - and all chunk

It is kind of inspired by Coati's awesome recent chunky YG setting, but it is also very different.
It will be 18k rose gold with platinum and diamond accents.

Once some more details are worked out I will ask if I can post the beautiful water colour sketches RDG have done for me.

Speak again soon, I am off to succumb to exhaustion and to fall into a real bed instead of a tent for the first time in 5 days - woot! :wavey:

AJ,

I did post in the Men's ring section, but I wanted YOU personally to see that I got another O.E.C and it's 1.38cts, so I have my big Diamond ring back so to speak.

Yes, it's the Diamond that I talked about earlier, and it was supposed to be 1.25cts but ended up being 1.38cts when taken out of the ladies mount and set into the men's mount.

I didn't mean to hijack your posts so to speak, just wanted to suggest that you full bezel set your O.E.C in white Gold, so that it will look even bigger, and to show you my ring...

John..... johnawesley

welcome back AJ!!

I have been up north too - not as far as you and not for work - just to catch some rays in Noosa for a week

I spied the new Julia Bezel on the recent sneak peak newsletter from JbEG

a CAD just popped up on their site - so I guess I can post it here :wink2:

(read that Erica is getting one for herself too!! can't wait to see how her ring comes out!!)

I am trying to stop myself from asking for a quote on it...

it would make a lovely RHR - thinking say a 1.2 to 1.4ct transitional in an L to M would sit well across on my hand opposite my 1.59ct OMC JM ering - now we have Jim working on our wedding bands - my mind is looking for new projects!! :Up_to_something:

great to hear you have locked in a plan for your stunner - I did bookmark the RDG website a few months back - their work looks amazing

Hi Heli,

Cheers for the welcome back! I have to admit, even though I was a little homesick to see my Fi, it was kind of sad to leave that magical country where it was sunny and warm all the time and fly back in to dreary cold Perth, lol..it was a great experience that has been very valuable to me personally and in my work, so I am grateful for the opportunity to have gone. I have no idea if that kind of thing interests you, but it is on each year and I can highly recommend it. ::)

Ah thank you for the photo of the JBeG setting - I went back and found my newsletter, that is a lovely modification to such a pretty setting.

Please do tell, are you ordering bands off of Jim's site or having something new / different made? I think a ~1.3ct tranny opposite your lovely JM sounds just perfect :naughty:

Still undecided what to do with the side baggs, will likely keep for a future project. :))

So AJ, what's the verdict? :naughty:

Hi Yssie - verdict finally below!

So I have very exciting news (for me) - I have given the green light to Robinson Designer Goldsmith (of New Zealand) for setting my OEC in the design Mike and I developed a couple weeks ago :appl:
I am just waiting atm for shipping instructions to get my diamond over to Auckland, and we will finalize some minor details than I should have my new ring I would say within 6 weeks. :D
The design is so completely different to anything I own or have ever seen in real life, but having seen some more of their work I have every confidence RDG can execute it perfectly - I can't wait to be able to share more details when the process is under way ::)

I'm sorry, I know I'm being a bit of a tease, but I just want to sure up the project and of course ask permission before posting any design drawings..

I'm happy to give a description though if anyone's keen. ;)

Thank you to everyone who posted for your comments and enthusiasm about my new diamond and re-set project, I promise eye candy in return in not too long. :wavey:

Hey AJ

so exciting to hear your stone is getting closer to its new home each day ;)) so looking forward to the unveiling of your beauty!!

after thinking hard and sketching a million ideas (I was sure my brain was going to burst!!) we went with a 7mm wide flat hammered ring for my man and a 1.8mm wide flat hammered band with milgrain edges for mine - both in Jim's unplated wg - quite simple in the end!!

my ering is on a 1.8mm band and I like the way that makes the stone pop on my size 7 finger - I want nothing to detract from the ering - but I am also keen to get a super fine eternity (think leon string or wf leon lotus or maybe the tiff novo - just trying to sort out the metal issue as all of those are in platinum :errrr: )

also off to San Fran and NY soon - so might find a vintage beauty at Lang's or somewhere in NY to cover that off :Up_to_something:

hmmm... old world might have a nice tranny kicking about... :naughty:

How exciting, congrats AJ!! Can't WAIT for the show and tell on this one :sun:

Thanks Panda, Heli and Yssie for sharing in my excitement!

Panda , have you happened to settle on a designer / setting style for your lovely big OEC as yet? Such a beautiful stone!

Heli, your choices of JM bands sound lovely - they are really just beautiful in their simplicity and special finishes, looking forward to seeing them complete. :))
I think if you can find it a vintage tiny eternity, maybe single cuts would be just lovely with your set - have a look around ebay if you have some time, I see lovely eternities or semi-eternities like that quite often..

oohhh, have a great time on your trip, I know both of those cities have great vintage jewellery stores ::)

A.J so happy to see your update. Can't wait to see the finished product - it sounds amazing!!!

Hi AJ,

Yes, my OEC is already set! I choose to go with JbEG in a six prong Julia with the single cuts in the basket and a 1.7mm shank. I also had them make me a 1.5mm WB with single cuts to match. I received the rings last Friday but unfortunately, one of the melee in the basket of the Julia fell out in transit so I have to send the ring back for repair :(sad

My apologies in the delay to respond ladies..

luck should arrive Mon/Tues, and as far as I know we are ready to get started pretty much straight away :appl:

I look forward to seeing your pics when it is safely back with you, I bet it looks beautiful in that setting. ::)
