Oh wow AJ! those group shots on the orange are to die for!!

What a find! you must be so happy.
1.gif

Are you planning to have them set locally or OS?

Hello H.O.T,
thank you!
I would really like if I could find someone local for a good price, but nope this OEC will more than likely be going to Michael E, I believe he is based in Washington..

It is ''sort of'' local, I have become very fond of this company in NZ -
Robinson Designer Goldsmith
- another PSer over in CS had a ring made by them and it turned out amazing.
I would love to work with them someday

Great pictures!!! How fun to be able to ''play'' with the loose stones!!
9.gif

Really looking forward to seeing your finished project. Excellent find.

Hi Cachette,
Cheers! they are fun to play with, although very fiddly! I am awaiting a package of many small square cut different coloured tourmalines atm, so I am looking forward to playing with them together with the baggs and hopefully creating a design.

Thank you, I''m looking forward to seeing it set too.

FANTASTIC pics aj!! Chipsy is adorable
2.gif

Your photos are amazing, I''ve tried and tried but CANNOT capture the colours and chunks my two OECs display, in any lighting at all!
14.gif
I love the pics where the baggs are casting shadows, amaaaazing!
30.gif

Hey Andi
35.gif

ha ha, nothing is as adorable as that smushy puppy in your av! Your photos are making me want for a pup again
2.gif

Not sure if you have tried this, but usually under a tree on a sunny day, with the dappled sunlight, is a guaranteed way to get these older cuts to show their colour and chunk
5.gif

I saw that you sent your OEC''s to Daniel M - very excited to see how they come out!

I''m glad you liked the pic with the funky shadows / reflections - I thought it was a cool effect - here''s another jff

Wow, I missed the loose diamond shots until today, but HOLY COW!!!! What an amazing find and that OEC is going to be gorgeous in the 8 prong you have planned.

I swear, AJ, I''m almost as excited as you must be to see this ring completed!!!!!

Hey Lauren,
Cheers hon for your comments, I''m glad you like the 8 prong idea - it will be something different for me. I am currently also deciding whether to have the shank engraved in a vintage design, or perhaps satin finished or some other texture method (with the head polished). Any thoughts / opinions at all?

I am very excited to get this one set finally, can''t wait to be able to wear it around!

Hey there fellow old cut lover
35.gif

Thanks hon - I''m glad you think so. I thought RG would be nice for something different, plus as you say I think it will really accentuate the pastels and colours that the OEC throws (well, I hope!).

I''m not sure yet what is available, but I want to ask Michael to see if we can get an alloy that is more like the vintage RG that you see - that more warm orangey shade rather than pinkish...does that make sense?
like the Peach or Apricot Gold in this photo for example - yum!

Oh I know exactly what you mean - my great-grandmother's handful of rg pieces are all coppery, and stayed coppery after a bath in silver polish (yes, I know, but I'm the odd duck who doesn't care for the patina), my new rg in the same karat on the other hand is flat out PINK

I must say, that apricot gold makes me swoon - just a hint of pink in all that peachy goodness
30.gif

I definitely think your stone is large enough that that sort of "powerful" metal colour wouldn't overwhelm it, and the brushed finish looks so silky and inviting (so that's my vote on the question not addressed to me
3.gif
) I imagine if the J/K has any brown in it a peachy setting will make it err pinkish, too, no?

Hi Zhu,
nope, just another alternative ering

No way I could give up my AVC so early!
No need to consider wedding bands at this time as I am not married - plenty of time to collect different bands

18.gif

Yup, I knew you would get it! I do admire pink gold pieces that vendors such as BG make for others on here..but I''m looking for something I guess with that old-worldy feel, and I think that PINK gold is actually very modern.
Coppers and peaches and high kt yellow golds like Coati''s new fantabulous bezel, now that''s the look I''m after
18.gif

ha ha, I''m glad you answered the question on the texture / finish - I should have actually addressed that as more of a general thing
41.gif

Another idea that has been suggested to me is just not bringing it to a high polish - as in, maybe one or tow levels below a really mirror polish..kind of like the vintagey finishes Jim Meyer produces, kwim?

TBH, I have not noticed any brown in this stone from the face up position...but I did plan to ask Michael to drop it in a few different colour / kt metals for me before making the final call.
1.gif

Y'know, now that I think about it, the one downside to non high-polish is that scratches show up so easily
39.gif
My old polished wg setting is pretty scratched up but it's still shiny, and it's reflecting so much that you really have to focus to see the scratches - FI's brushed band is actually a lot less scratched, but what scratches there are are awfully visible without all the distracting shine
40.gif

I haven't seen any JM IRL, much as I'd love to! I wonder if that sort of almost-not-quite polish finish is the happy medium here..

AJ - Love that OEC diamond and what a great deal. But, I have to laugh when you say that pink gold is modern. I have a gorgeous ladies Elgin pocket watch that I inherited from my great-aunt that is in rose gold, and that piece is decidedly not modern. I guess what goes around comes around, and what was old is now new.
2.gif

Hi Flygirl,

Yes I agree with you - you will notice I was referring to the kind of bright cool PINK that comes out when vendors such as BG offer a 14k alloy, and that appears modern to me.

However imo and from what I have observed, vintage ROSE gold, such as I imagine your great aunt''s piece would be like - tends to have a warmer, deeper appearance to the colour of the gold.

I hope this clarifies my earlier statements

I am thinking the "not quite mirror polish" could be the happy medium - for reference, here''s is Coati''s fabulous new bezel which has this kind of finish..also her matching band (which I believe is vintage) has a great patina..I guess most would call it scratches, but I love the look (hope you don''t mind the pic-steal coats!).

And seeing as a picture is always better...I found these two rings to compare the differences in RG tones that yssie and I were discussing earlier..

The ring on the left is the bright pink that imho appears more modern than the one on the right, which is also rose gold but has a warmer...I guess more gold appearance, and personally reminds of the colouring more commonly found in vintage RG.
There is *nothing* unattractive about the colour on the left, the colour on the right is simply my preference.
5.gif

I have no idea if Michael E can source different alloys such as this, but I hope so

Hello Miss! (haha you scamp) You know I love your stone...
13.gif

And I can't wait to see your finished ring!

Just so ya know, my band is not matching or vintage. It's 24k with a heavy brushed finish-so the scratches you see are the applied texture. I like the contrast with the polish of my oec ring. I actually can't wait for the polished ring to show more wear-I love the look too!

As far as brushed finished rings showing more scratches-that definitely does not apply with my band. I think you may see more marks in satin finished gold than in brushed, because satin finish is generally matte and brushed has the stroke-like texture, which bounces light. I prefer brushed over satin, because of this-esp broader brushed finishes as opposed to fine. I like the shine.

Gorgeous pics!!
36.gif

AJ here is a pic of different finishes. The band I usually wear is on top-the brushed finish. The one underneath has a speckled texture. So many choices! Additional wear and tear really enhances the texture-worn these for over a year...clumsily.

I wonder if it is achievable still with 18k...?

ha ha, Michael is going to have his hands full with me, likely will think me a nutter and *complete* control freak - asking for a non-pink, warm rose gold alloy, with a couple of polishes below mirror shine, with a broad brushed finish and texture....what do you think, am I missing anything..?

I prefer brushed over satin, because of this-esp broader brushed finishes as opposed to fine. I like the shine.

Gorgeous pics!!

Thanks so much for the extra info and beautiful photo on the finishes - very good to know, as I don''t think I had thought / asked about brushed finish - this is for sure the look I would love.

You're very welcome, m'dear!

The brushed finish will be bolder/deeper in 24k, but I think you could get a nice soft brushed texture similar to the one on your JM in 18k. It would be more subtle, but really beautiful with the design you've chosen. So let's see, peachy gold, med polish, with some variety of brushed finish?...sounds perfect!!

eta: whoa, that's a long quote! haha --learning how to post on the new PS!

beautiful stone! it's so full of life!

That is a beautiful OEC! OMGosh, the amazing colors in the first set of photos had me drooling. I can't wait to see what you do with that ball of fire.

AJ,

We actually found your O.E.C ring that you bought from us on Ebay, on Ebay ourselves for $3,750.00, so we only took a $658.00 loss, so not too bad and it went to a much deserving woman.

As everyone has said, it was a heck of a find for both you and ourselves and there are good deals to find on Ebay.

Our top find, that I never told you about was buying a bag of mixed gemstones on Ebay for $200.00. The seller Scraps the Gold for melt, and either Didn't look at the stones nor test them, or it was put in there by mistake.

Upon looking at the gems and testing them with our Diamond tester, we found a 1.32ct Asscher cut Diamond that was SI2 clarity and J colour. It appraised for $4,200.00. There is a picture of it On Pricescope under happycamper or show me the ring, men's rings. We had it set in the ring you can see pictured on page 3.

So, the Diamond only cost us 2 cents, so that's the best find EVER!!!

I wish you good luck on the Diamonds and ring. Please let us all know what you end up doing with them. Diamonds are awesome!!

Be well my friend,

John.... johnawesley

What a beautiful OEC and at such a great deal!!! Have you decided how you're going to set it? I just acquired an OEC on eBay as well and am so conflicted on what to do about the setting.
