Anxious to get the engagement ring

So.. I found a picture of the dress from the mall in a magazine today. Is it me, or is it WAY less attractive in this picture than it was in the mall? My b/f and I think it might just be because the model is "curvier" than the manequin was. I am NOT curvy, so its still worth trying it on.. but I have a new inspiration for a gown... (see next post)

this is my maternal grandmother in her wedding gown, from 1939!!! I remembered that the picture was in our basement, so I brought it up to examine. Picture it minus the sleeves.. wouldn't it be GORGEOUS? I can't remember if its still around.. but I THINK it is somewhere. I could get it altered. I was thinking either just taking the sleeves off, or totally changing the top so that its a strapless. Isn't it SUCH a BEAUTIFUL gown though?

MelissaSue: I'm sure it would be so special to be able to wear your grandmother's dress! Besides..think if you were able to save the $3000 bucks..you can get yourself a nice RHR too! keke..always thinking of how to get more bling!

kaya: congratulations...can't wait to see the e-ring!

JCJD: It's really the ring, and it makes it even worse that he peeks at it while I am there..he's such a tease! But I still love him..but I give him til the end of the week before I wrestle him for it.

ChooChoo: I hear you dear! It'll be soon! He just really wants to make it purrrfect so that you'll be gushing in tears when he finally does it!

argh...

staring at the little box....but I can't!

another day....

MelissaSue -

What a beautiful dress! Being able to use it would be SO cool!

Interesting thing I found out recently: I'm the first for three generations on my fiance's side of the family to get a diamond engagement ring(could be even further back, but no one knows for sure). Similar story on my side of the family. I guess that might explain fiance's mother's reaction when she saw the ring, eh?

Congratulations Kaya!

Dont forget to post pics! When you signed for the box, did you know that it had your ring inside?!

So my b-day is Sat. and ive been hoping this would be the day, but i dont think it is. I havent been able to dig up any GOOD clues from the BF that it will happen. He keeps complaining about having to buy a present (not a new thing, since i wont accept video games
11.gif
) so i tell him i know something that could cover my b-day and christmas for the next 2 years! He says nothing. Also i keep asking him what our plans are for the day/night so i can plan something to hang out w/ my friends and he just shrugs his shoulders and goes, i dont know, whatever, i guess. Oh and he also mentioned that he hates diamond commercials now because "they just remind him". So i dont know. I guess Sunday i'll ask him whats going on cause its been almost 2 months since the last time we went ring shopping and quickly coming up on a year since we started looking.

Tulip - I dont know how you are doing it girl, but more power to you! I would have been in that box 30 secs after he put it down!
naughty.gif

Melissa - Going back to you asking about Sweetest Day... seems to be a proposal in the works here.

tulipcloud....

this is a daily reminder... "DO NOT stare at the little box....." I know it's calling your name and it's been calling your name. You are doing so good (better than any of us can hope for). We will help you thru it until THE day comes...

PS. Keep my name on the list... still got more ways to go...

MelissaSue,

What a gorgeous/classic looking dress for a beautiful lady!! I just love old photoes...

~*~*~Do you guys think after all of our names have been scratched off from "anxious to get the E ring..." that we would be on another list for... "anxious to get a wedding dress...?"
confused.gif
Is there a support group as good as PS for wedding related issues?

Gah, you guys are telling me........he's talking about spending maybe $500-600 on a daily driver and all I can think is, "That's a nice 1/3ct solitaire"...

ACK!!!

RE: support groups: theknot.com, weddingchannel.com and ultimatewedding.com can all be very helpful!

Thanks for the "golden" tips....

I'm not ready to face that project yet. I've seen so many of my friends turn in to bridezilla. I know it can be a very stressful process to go thru. Hmmmm... eloping is sounding better and better!!

I'm in denial and hoping that some fairy godmother will swoop in and take care of the details!

Goldengirl, A Daily driver???
What is that exactly?

So I asked my mom this morning about my grandma's dress. She isn't even sure if we still have it (I'm pretty sure that I saw what was said to be it with in the last 5 years or so) but she says that even if we do, it wasn't preserved and therfore would not be wearable
8.gif
I could always wear my mom's hippy wedding gown.. which I will try to scan and post so we can all giggle at it. I like grandma's dress much better.

NJC-
I have a story that may make you feel better. My former manager at work, he and his girlfriend had been dating for like EIGHT years or something.. and she REALLY wanted to get engaged.. but he always acted like he didn't. Her birthday is on Valentine's Day (Which I believe fell on a saturday this year) and on the day before valentines day, we were working with him, and me and all the girls were asking him what he was getting her for her birthday/valentines day. And he kept saying.. "I haven't gotten her anything yet. I don't know what I'm going to do," and he was working until 9 at night that day before. So he was saying that he'd have to run out in the morning and buy her something.. Well turns out, that he was fooling us all (and I'm sure her as well) and had really already bought her a 2ct e-ring!!! I had totally believed him that he hadn't gotten her anything too! So.. that was her only birthday present.. but I think she was happy with it.

Boys are funny people.

Yeah, I have started visiting theknot.com forums as well. We can all move over there in a little while!!

Oh! I found out today that I get to be the maid of honor in my bestf riends wedding. I had thought I was just going to get to be a bridesmaid, but she officially told me today. Isn't that exciting?

Oh well. I have LOTS of studying to do! I should get working on it!

Melissa

Here is my hippy parents (1976). Its not a great picture.. and its kind of in rough shape.. but it gives you an idea. I DON't think I'll be wearing that one. I like the bell sleeves especially.

The flowergirl is my sister at age 8. My mom pulled out the flower girl dress the other day, thinking my neice might be able to use it for dress-up and it looks like something out of Little House on the Prairie. WAY more in person than it ever did in the pictures.

A rehash of the info - this ring is a size 5 (more like a 4.5-4.75...), Celtic-knot-inspired design, and has 3 little fakies glued into the spaces between the knots (Yeah!! Quality Claire's craftsmanship!!
loopy.gif
). But, it serves its purpose well - keeping my ring finger happy until my b/f becomes my fiance! Which had better be soon, before this cheap-o p-ring falls apart too!

Melissa - Your grandmother is beautiful! And that lace dress is fabulous!! She sure was a beautiful bride! Is that her to the right of your mom in the next picture? Sure looks like it!
It's too bad that her dress wasn't preserved and you can't wear it. Maybe you and your MIL-to-be could work something out that's similar?? And I don't think your mom's "hippy" dress is that bad! Maybe I'm not seeing as much of the retro detail as you do, but I think if you just took out the sleeves, it'd be a nice dress!
Congrats on maid-of-honor!! If you want any advice on what to do for bachelorette parties, I've got some dos and don'ts I could pass along (for example, DON'T ask the girls at your joint bachelor/bachelorette party if they want to have a three-some with you and your fiance (yes, correct spelling here)!! This is a true story).
I've been struggling with who I should ask to be my MOHonor (you know, after I get engaged and all). My sister and I are close, but I want one of my good friends from college to be MOH too... Maybe they'll all just be honor attendants without special titles...

Congratulations kaya!!!!! Pics please!!!!! I read somewhere on here that "the safest place for your diamond ring when you're traveling is on your finger". Of course, depends on the scoundrels and vagrants that frequent your subway line.
2.gif

tulipcloud - Sheesh!!! You've got much more self-control than I ever will!! I'd have already crushed his eye sockets in for peeking at it in front of you! Hope you've been practicing your wrestling manuevers!!

goldengirl - I second Momoftwo's question - what's a daily driver? Someone who drives you around every day??

firerock - Yay eloping!!!! If only I can get my b/f to propose!! Have I mentioned that I'd take a candy bar...?
tongue.gif
No diamonds needed here!! Just want a husband! (A very specific one, if you don't mind

)

OK, I'm done, I'm tired, and I need to give my kitties their antibiotics. Later!

I think GG means a "Daly" driver, as in golf club, and John Daly the golfer.

my poor sweetheart had his car towed from my house this morning.
8.gif
Imagine our shock as we walked out so he could drive me to work and his car was gone....we both stared at each other thinking did someone steal your car??
eek.gif
or were we going crazy we forgot where he parked it.
confused.gif

well turns out they towed a few cars last nite so I have to write a nasty letter to send out to my homeowner's association. But as he reminded me...good thing I didn't leave your e-ring in the car!
rolleyes.gif
so I had to punch him for that one!

soon soon I hope...

Daly Driver ...roflol...
loopy.gif

goldengirl: he should have to sell his nice car for your e-ring and get just the daily driver....test drive that idea by him

JCJD - YOur promise ring is adorable! I am the opposite though. I have never worn a ring on my left ring finger, and the closest I come to being engaged, I have removed all rings from my whole left HAND in preparation. I used to often wear my tanzanite ring on my left hand middle finger, because I thought it clashed too much with my amythest on my right hand. But, now I feel as though I have to keep my left hand ready for the REAL ring.. I have had it cleared off since August in anticipation. Its been naked for a LONG time now.

Yes, that is my grandma to the right of my mom in my mom's wedding picture. I never knew that grandmother very well as she lived far away from me when I was young and died when I was about 12, but from what i heard she was a wonderful lady. Very smart and determined. I remember being little and playing scrabble with her, (she was a big scrabble player) and being angry because she wouldn't "let me win" and I informed her that grandmothers were supposed to let their grandkids win. I'm glad now that I'm older that she didn't though.
1.gif

I am actually one of two maids of honor in my best friends wedding. The other girl is married already though, so she is the "matron of honor." I can't really decide between my best friend and my sister either though. I think it will end up being my sister, if she wants to be. She is a lot older than me though, so she may not really WANT to be my maid of honor. She's been in a lot of weddings in her day. But at the sametime, with her being older, she'll be good at taking on lots of responsibilities.

Do people REALLY not know what a "Daily Driver" is? I am laughing at these theories, because having a big car dork boyfriend, I hear "Daily Driver" everyday. For those who don't know.. Its just a CAR. Often a somewhat crappy car, that will get to work and places you need to go, when you have a nicer car, or a project car, that you don't want to take out in the elements all the time. For example, think of an old man who has a corvette convertible to take out driving in the summer time. In the winter and the rain, he probably doesn't want to take out his investment in the elements, or risk it being damaged or stolen or vandalized in a parking lot, so he might have another, less expensive car to drive in these conditions.

Ugh.. I have ANOTHER long day today. I am working 9-2, then I have class (with a test) from 4-7. Have I mentioned YUCK?

Yes, Gosh! people really didn't know what a daily driver is. Must be a regional or generational term. Us old folks in our 40's don't hear every new piece of slang. My college aged kids keep me somewhat up to date, but I bet they don't know what it is either.

interesting.. I didn't know that 'daily driver' was a term that not everyone knew..

Then again I'm nuts about cars. Unfortunately, my daily driver IS my track car - more worries! Hard to keep it detailed and looking its best when I'm screaming down the straights on the track at 125mph..
2.gif
I'm tempted to get a cheap-o daily driver, but the Mini is just too much fun to drive ALL the time!

GoldenGirl wrote: "a daily driver takes precedence (he's going to get a second, yes that's right, a SECOND car to drive around before an ering!)"

I dont think i had really heard those specific words (think i hear something like "commuter car") to describe the second car but GoldenGirl did explain and it makes sense.

Melissa - Your story does kinda make me feel a little better. I think i would pass out if he gave me a 2ct. ring! I did get something out of him last nite though. As we were going to bed he was groaning about it only being wednesday and i told him that meant he only had 3 days to buy me a present and in a *very* groany tone said he bought that a while ago and was surprised i hadnt found it yet! TulipCloud suddenly came to mind and i wanted to rip through everything in the apartment this morning! But decided not to... besides it probably buried WAAAAYYY down in his closet and im not going in there! So thats sparked a little bit of hope back.

JCJD - Thats a cute little ring! Love the delicate weave. Every once in a while ill put a ring on my left ring finger and if i stare hard enough i can picture a diamond! How insane have i gotten!
twirl.gif

Melissa - Thanks! Since I don't wear much jewelry period, I feel like I need to get used to wearing *something* on that finger in preparation.
My maternal grandmother is a terror at canasta (card game, if you don't know it)! She's really quiet the entire game, and then when you least expect it, she lays out all of her cards and wins! She doesn't understand that she's supposed to let us grandkids win either!
2.gif

It's too bad none of my potential MOH's are married... I think they'll all just be honor attendants and they can hash out the responsibilities as they like...
I thought that might be what it meant, but "commuter car" is more familiar to me. Must be regional (definitely not generational, Momoftwo!!
rodent.gif
). Where are you from goldengirl??
Good luck with your test tonight!! I'm sure you'll do just fine!
1.gif

tulipcloud - are you saying that your b/f has left the ering out in the open at your house, which is not his house as well, and you're not peeking!!!!!! You deserve an award, girl!!! I don't know how you do it! Way to go punching him!!

rfath - YOU HAVE A MINI!!!!! I want one!! What color is it? What's the gas mileage on one of those? Do you have a vintage or a new one? They're so cute!!! My cheap-o daily driver is my bicycle
9.gif
! Best part is, no gasoline, and me minus 13 pounds! Woo-hoo!!!

njc - I do the same thing!! My sister got these fake-diamond rings from Walmart that actually look pretty good. So every so often I'll go down to her apt and steal one to wear around her place. Her fingers are bigger than mine, so those size 8's she wears on her ring finger are huge even on my thumbs! but it's still fun.
appl.gif

And off to homework again!! Toodle-loo ladies!
wavey.gif

Hee-hee-hee! I just noticed that my last p-ring pic is life-size on my computer, so if you want to know how big my hands actually are, now you do!! Yes, I'm a big dork.... Yes, I'm OK with that.
rodent.gif
9.gif

Momoftwo, JCJD, and anybody else who doesn't know: a daily driver is a second car that he can drive around on a, heh, daily basis so he doesn't put miles on his more-valuable sports car. Generally either a beater or something that gets really good gas mileage.

tulipcloud: ROTFLMAO!!! I want to marry this guy, remember?? That would not go over well AT ALL!!!!!
9.gif

And I'm in Phoenix now, but from Salt Lake City, and he's from Louisville. Maybe it's not so much a regional term, but a dork term: ie, if you're a car dork, you know the term. (hahaha, rfath!!
2.gif
)

We don't just learn about diamonds here.... we learn so much more... like... "what is a daily driver"! LMHO!!
9.gif

Okay, anyone around here who has a second car, it's the one they don't drive everyday, like a sports car or convertible that they drive in good weather and the car they do drive is their commuter car. I live in the DC metro area in Northern Virginia and a lot of people commute. Of course we have 4 vehicles in our names with 4 drivers, so a 5th car just doesn't make any sense. Only 3 here right now as my 20 year old has his at college, but we definintely don't need another car right now on our insurance. Anyway, commuter car is the term here, if it's used at all.
