Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

I was worried, but not so much anymore. I'm in South Africa, and mixed race. So far it seems that black Africans are immune - we haven't been infected in Asia, and we haven't been infected when it has come to Africa.

Having said that, I'd rather not test that theory! Especially as my town currently has no running water for up to two weeks at a time due to drought and 20+ years of maladministration. So we have stocked up the freezer etc. We generally have a good supply of dry goods because that's just what you do when you live in Africa.

I have two close friends teaching English in China. They went on holiday to the Philippines just before CNY and after their holiday, the one's parents insisted that she returns to SA, the other returned to Beijing. He now has a sprained ankle but refuses to go to the doctor. Says he also doesn't want to test the immunity theory!

I stock up 12 bottles of these...You guys are crazy. It is not "the end of the world" !!

New case diagnosed a few miles up the road from us (northern U.K.). Feels like it’s getting closer to home. Our government announced measures that will be taken in the event of a more widespread outbreak, including restricting use of public transport and large gatherings. DH is saying he might start driving to work rather than going by train. Also that we should discuss it with our kids (teens) and have a plan if one or both of us gets sick! All getting a wee bit scary. Worst thing is that I work in healthcare so am at risk of exposure. Really don’t want to be bringing it home but how will I know if I’ve got it??

Not the end of the world, but has the real potential to kill millions if people aren't proactive about avoiding it. Someone in the local FB group posted a specialist saying it is no big deal. Only 40-70% of adult population will get it and the fatality rate is only 1%. Fine. I did the calculations (7.7 billion minus 27% to remove those who were under 15 as of 2006 -- best data I could get at midnight while sick...) and found that if only 40% get it and the 1% fatality rate is correct, that is more than 22 MILLION deaths. That is an awfully big number.

Granted, that doesn't factor in potential vaccines and slower/less infection rate due to precautions. I really really hope it isn't that bad and the infection rate and fatality rate are actually far smaller. (That said, it isn't something people should be ignoring!)

I wish there were more answers! Take care of yourself and your family.

Might sound crazy but I’d rather get it now than later on when supply of medication is low and medical resources stretched! That’s assuming of course that one exposure provides immunity going forward, though I did read that someone got reinfected? Oh joy, the gift that just keeps giving.
I say this because I remember my mother taking us over to our cousins who had chicken pox. She figured better to get the 3 of us over and done with together.

I keep reading that unfortunately one doesn't get immune to it....

Get well soon @Arcadian !

Yum - ill be right over (im 100 % not sick )

This is a serouse question and please i don't want to cause trouble but i noticed on my other online community the right wing Americans seen less worried than the left wing ?
Do you think this is true ?
I havn't noticed concern running down party lines here yet but we have only one case so far in NZ and while i pretty much despise the present labour coalition government I'm not unhappy about the government's response to the virus esoecially now they are looking at economic releaf for effects sectors

@nala - this is NOT an attack, I hope you find this little anecdote funny because I had a good laugh about it.... in the city I live in, in Australia today toilet paper was sold out in every shop and every supermarket because of the mass panic of people. I (despite what you might think) did not panic or go out and buy anything because of the virus, we are now down to 4 rolls of toilet paper in the house by accident.

I said to my husband tonight you know this s@#* just got real when you can no longer buy toilet paper, I guess I'll be wiping my butt with tissues and whatever else I can get instead.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Wow, on the stories about empty supermarkets everywhere in the world....I've done my regular Monday grocery shopping and the supermarkets I went to were fully stocked.. No shortages of anything at all... I'm living in the greater Paris region, so very very densely populated. Looks like the french really keep calm despite rising infection numbers & my proximity to the regions that were hit hardest here in France. I myself am guilty of stocking up on TP ( @arkieb1 made me laugh so much and feel less guilty about the tripled TP shopping at the same time) and have made sure we have pasta, milk, cereal, flour, some dried legumes, canned tomatoes. All stuff we usually buy and eat, just a little more of it.

Last night I went out to the various streaming services looking for a documentary I remember watching on the 1918 flu. I thought it was a Ken Burns, or a Frontline, but I could not find what I remembered. However, I found a short 1-hour one entitled "Influenza 1918 - Special Edition" on Amazon, and I watched that, just for...fun? It was interesting and informative, and was worth the price of admission just for the fact that it had the full story of the Swedish researcher who in 1951 obtained permission from the Inuit to dig up one of their people who had died in 1918. He suspected he could find perfectly preserved bodies in the permafrost, and thus would be able to obtain actual 1918 virus. He did, but was never able to grow the virus. (In retrospect, I would say this was a good thing, considering the technology of the day). Anyway, a lot of stuff happens, and he is old now, but actually went back in 1997 and got permission to dig up another person, and this time, they were able to sequence the genome of the virus. It was a very fun story of science and the twists and turns it takes.

Aside from that, I did some snorting at the "we're infinitely more ready today for a pandemic" from the medical people on the show. I think we're going to find out that we are absolutely NOT ready. Plus, we don't have a population filled with brave ordinary women who will volunteer to do basic nursing. Would hospitals even allow such things now? So many women took massive risks to nurse the soldiers who were so hard hit. The thing modern medical historians kept reading from the analyses not long after it was over, is that the single most important thing determining recovery was good nursing.

The show also noted that cities that implemented multi-pronged measures early, banning public gatherings, social distancing, quarantines, and that kept those in place for LONG times, fared better than cities that did not.

Anyway, recommend it, and of course my favorite book from a few years ago, "The Great Influenza" by John M. Barry. The writing is decent and it's full of well-documented history of what happened and how people reacted at the time. If you want to know how things might play out now (only amplified through the panic-machine that is the interwebs) this book will scare the willies out of you. Wilson was one scary dude. Not BF-crazy like our current WH occupant, but the reading of his dedication to the war over public health, and how he and squashed the press reporting on the flu, could also be a blueprint for things that are already happening or might happen soon.

Love you guys. So, here's the dealio and in case any of you have to go through this, some expecations of what you get in Urgent Care facility.

Yesterday morning I woke up and felt under the weather. my chest was bothering me, I figured maybe allergies. As the day progressed, it started to feel worse. shortness of breath, etc.

This isn't odd, I'm asthmatic and its usually triggered by allergies (which things prebloomed down here yet again), or I caught something. I used my inhaler, which I rarely do but it was not working.

So as a precaution, I went to Urgent Care. There's lots of them down here. Unfortunately the one nearest me is also nearest to the golf tournament so the cases coming in there were doozies (Some guy took a golf ball to the head, blood everywhere.)

Anyway I go back see the nurse, lovely person. All my vitals are really good. The chest thing, the wheezing my cough, thats what they worried about.

Doc was like we're going to do a flu test first. If that comes back negative we move to the next step. I asked if they had Covid testing and she said no, thats outside of the protocol right now. (Please let your doc on call step through these things to be sure they don't miss anything)

The fast test is a swab up the nose and t and wait for 10-15 minutes. my result

OK so for those who are NOT aware there's 4 types, they test only for 3. C does not become epidemic and it is NOT in the shot. I think its passed from humans to animals but again, not too terrible and its quite mild compared to the other 2.

If my test came back negative they would have moved on with additional tests for Covid-19, which would have been a hospital trip.

But yes it sucks. I sound like James Earl Jones right now...lol

I don't have body aches or chills, I just feel...yucky, and I do have generalized headache which thankfully I can handle (its not a migraine so thats good!). My chest does hurt, its not any worse than yesterday though. And it was probably from that idiot that was coughing in his HANDS and touching shit at the store (I swear I hate ppl...)

If you have upper respiratory disease like asthma or COPD, etc, do NOT hesitate to get checked if your meds are not working because its better to get this early. The antivirals stand a better chance at working if you catch it early.

So, the shot likely worked because I didn't catch A or B which is prevalent down here.

@Arcadian I am glad you have the mildest one and hope you are better soon.

My husband had the flu earlier this year. I assume it was the flu but he (of course) didn't go to the doctor and wasn't tested. In the 20 years we have been together, I haven't seen him that sick. In bed for 5 days!!! I also think it was the flu because no one else in my family (3 kids plus me) got sick. We had the flu shot; DH didn't. My take away is that the vaccine was pretty effective this year. Deductive reasoning but seems to fit.

Your husband and my husband have "that gene"...lol Mine wouldn't go either, even though he def. had it. He volunteers at Navy Seal Museum, and thats where he got it, apparently few people tested there had A. He nearly drove me crazy. He's now in Panama, and still complaining about "being sick" I told him I really did not want to hear it.

Once my lungs are affected, I have no choice in the matter because I like breathing I'm thankful for all the urgent care clinics down here because getting in to see my regular GP would have been a month.

Will take the day off work. might sleep, might watch afternoon tv...lol Currently in bed with my laptop (and even though I work from home, I sound freaking awful so no conference calls) The dog will suffer a little bit but she's got a nice sized yard to roam in. I will not do a walkie this evening (did a short one this morning, it did me no favors)

The two in GA are in Fulton County and it’s freaking me out! Fulton Co is literally right next to me but being a county that literally runs a fairly narrow north to south, it could be further from me. I swore I would take my son out of school if it popped up in the surrounding counties but with this odd shaped one it could be anywhere. I have no idea what to do. I am severely high risk for fatality. This sucks. That is all.

My place is so remote that nothing has changed day to day. Life goes on as usual.

Hubster stopped last night after his doc appt in which he has nothing but seasonal allergies, he's cancelling his eye surgery (cataract) next week, well what can you say, one has to do what one must.

My husband said TP was totally gone at our HEB in Leander Texas! that was surprising. So I got to thinking, maybe I will buy condensed milk (I figure the dry milk will be out of stock but I will check).. I plan on buying more bread flour as we make our own bread in our machine usually.. get some more cheese. I have ham frozen so I can make pea soup! yum.. I try to keep a balanced mind here. When the WHO is getting more ominous then I will reconsider, we do have a plan to take our granddaughter daily if her daycare closes, our son can work from home but our DIL must go into her company as all her contacts, files etc are there, good thing she works in the medical field and has access to masks etc.

I did read in the WaPo I think that the death rate per infection has been raised :(

I have some clindamycin from my jaw infection and a tiny bit of doxy. Got tons of ibuprofen and aspirin (arthritis queen here). I don't get the local Atown paper because its Red and dumb, used to be a lot better 20 years ago.. so I'm not sure what is happening here.

the scary thing especially to me is that light cases, undetected ones, can infect people and they will be more extreme due to health reasons, age, etc.. that is what makes this thing worse than SARs to me.. hoping I don't get it, I've got scarred lungs from having pneumonia many times and am an ex smoker, fat, high blood pressure and have rosacea! so I'm a prime candidate for the worst case scenario. I just don't want my baby granddaughter to get it really.

I need to get popcorn!

So here's whats interesting. There's a case of a woman who traveled to Northern Italy, came home to Miami started feeling sick. She has other strains of Covid. CDC would not authorize a Covid-19 test.

Posting the article, its weird.

This is one thing I've heard multiple times from local experts and the WHO. Is it bad? Sure. Is it possible to contain it? Absolutely! As I said upthread, Vietnam was able to identify, isolate and treat to a very high degree the infected, and have had no new cases since Feb 13. The oldest patient was 73 and fully recovered.

You're in better shape that I was -- I got down to TWO rolls in the house, and I pee A LOT! So early last week (Monday I think) I went to the Costco up by TR and bought the zillion pack of toilet paper and two 40 bottle packs of water. Like you, I bought the paper because I was running out, and I buy the water up there because in the city we are charged 5 cents per bottle tax, so a $4.99 forty pack of water is $6.99. (Don't get me started with where that "tax" money goes!) So I was in line with a ton of TP and a bunch of water. (And *maybe* also one of those evil canisters of dark chocolate salted caramels... but I digress... ) People at the checkout line were looking at me funny and I couldn't figure out what was so fascinating. I guess now they just figure I was panicking, even though this was just normal shopping for me. I wonder though what the TP and water stock is in that store today?!

The media causing hysteria is likely more dangerous than the actual virus. I am still reading the death rate likely will be less than 1% here. I am not buying into the doom and gloom some are buying into. It's just incredible that anyone would compare this to the 1918 flu when sanitation, medical care, communication, etc. were much different than today. Good article here:

I truly believe the virus has been here maybe for months, because no one was testing for it. It's probably everywhere. Old people would be diagnosed with pneumonia and I am sure the deaths are lumped into the flu/pneumonia yearly death rate. Most mild cases will never be diagnosed making the percentages of serious illness even less.

One more thought, I wouldn't even consider accepting a brand new vaccine that had had minimal testing for effectiveness and not knowing longer term side effects. The last SARS vaccine was not even tested on humans because of the death rate in the mice trials. In any event, by the time they could have had a vaccine on the marker, the virus had run it's course. That is what I am hoping for this time.

For those who'd like some natural ways to boost the immune system and help if you get the virus, here's a good list.

We have Vitamins C, D, and E, and organic green tea, and I think I'll order the resveratrol. They say to NOT use elderberry for this, even though it is very effective for regular colds and flu. If nothing else, I'd certainly have a good supply of Vit C on hand, and I am taking a low amount of C and D now.

What I find concerning is the fact that we keep hearing about new cases of this virus popping up but we don’t hear about the government’s response. We don’t hear how they rallied around that person to keep things contained. We haven’t heard anything about what will happen if this escalates. We haven’t been given any real advice aside from “wash your hands.”

Worse than that, we are sitting here watching as the residents of a nursing home are kept in their facility rather than taken for medical care. Their friends and family are told they aren't allowed to visit. They have had two (announced so far) deaths from the virus. More than 50 residents and employees symptomatic. No updates on how many tests they have run. I can't believe none of the other elderly/sick residents are sick with this. So now we have 100+ residents all in the same building with at least 35 of them probably infected. I just keep watching for updates and am so angry for the residents and their families that more of them will get sick than already were because of some stupid decisions. (This is also the building that caused 25 firefighters and 2 police to need quarantined...)

I’m in a fairly big town, and people are going nuts at the stores. I went to several Targets, Walgreens, grocery stores, etc: all were very low on hand soap, cold medicines, pain relievers, zinc lozenges. Every store completely OUT of any hand sanitizer or hand wipes. Can’t even find a tiny travel bottle. Guess I will have to make my own if we run out.

I just saw that you have 'flu with complicating conditions, Arcadian. I am so sorry. I don't know if you will see this, but my heart goes out to you. I don't think I shared it on Pricescope but a few weeks ago I spent some time in a hospital with a man from Senegal (my nephew's uncle) who doesn't speak English. He was on a ventilator, and had a very, very bad lung infection. The origin was never found. He was very lucky to survive. I hope never to suffer the way he did.

I pray you will be much better soon.
