Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

Posted on a local news site:
Canadian doctor tests positive for coronavirus after returning from Hawaii trip

I am getting a little more concerned, not as much about how bad the virus is but the stupidity of people.
I'm still worried more about the flu because a lot of people around here have it. Lady came over to drop off something for us to scan for the landlord.
She knows I'm not in good health, comes in has the sniffles and says that everyone at her house has the flu.
I just barely refrained from yelling get out!
Cleaned everything she came in contact with including the doorknob with disinfectant wipes.

That’s terrible.

There is no toilet paper again. I'm actually starting to worry that once we run out of our 40 pack, we won't be able to get more. All the Lysol/Clorox products are also sold out, and OTC cold and flu meds. No hand sanitizer. So to be honest, my household is not prepared really, and we can't get prepared. Canned goods are also raided. I keep hoping the hoarding will stop so we can just do normal shopping. We also usually do groceries several times a week for fresh meat and produce. We being anyone but me now.

Fortinos 7:00am. That’s how we grabbed a bunch of sanitizer for DH’s office.

There was PC brand this morning. Nothing else.

TP... Keep an eye at Home Depot and Lowe's too. Stores people don't generally think of first for buying stuff like that.

Check out FB groups for your area that may be sharing status updates as people go out shopping. That has been helping a lot here.

How is it worse than we are hearing?!? The things going by make it look like about as bad as you can possibly get. Would love to hear anything you are comfortable sharing.

I agree that for me personally the medical situation mentioned up thread is about as bad as it can get.

On a psychological level many Italians who aren't sick yet feel like in a surreal apocalyptical movie. Rome, Milan Turin are completely under curfew. Nobody going out except if they absolutely must. Police checkpoints every 100 m.
I've been hearing it from friends in Italy but here it is also on the news. Again: no reporting in the US?

But I agreed with you that even if it feels bad for them, the real drama is the medical situation.

@kipari Most of the reporting on US news sites are focused on the US. I don’t know if people know where to find fact-based reporting of world news.

I strongly encourage those who believe that we’re “not getting the whole story” to read these articles and provide reputable sources that show what we’re missing.

Plane came into PBI last night...person with coronavirus onboard.

9 miles south of me.

I wasn't too worried. Not even when a tour group returned to South Africa from Europe and 6 of them tested positive. Currently 13 people in South Africa have tested positive. But I'm coloured and it seemed that Africans are immune.

But I see one of your NBA players has it now, and he's black sooooo...

Most unfortunate, since the countries who are ahead time-wise have a lot of valuable information to offer....

Unfortunately we seem to be about ten days (!) later into the pandemic than Italy here in France....let's hope the containment strategies do work and we'll not be in the same place in ten days' time.

I still haven't read a scientific approach as to why things went downhill so fast in Italy. General prejudice against Italian mindset is circulating a lot (laissez-faire mentality, not taking official orders seriously... You get the gist), but from what I've read from the WHO they did put strategies into place fast and early...
The us is about three weeks behind Italy, time wise.
And making all the meetings secret and not accepting test kits etc makes, unfortunately the official strategy for containment LESS good looking than in Italy.

I have heard bits and pieces but don't trust any one source for information and am having a hard time getting what is really going on with this stuff. It seems like many media places try to make it no big deal then others say big huge deal. Same for patient experience. Hearing more first-hand observations would be interesting as another piece to this confused puzzle.

Hi @Trekkie I've read that from you. I couldn't find any data on this, do you have a link to data or anything ?

@kipari I'm liking your posting in the middle of the night here in the US because I, also, have wanted to have more information on this topic. I was driving my daughter's fiancé to work one morning and I shared Trekkie's posting about African heritage and immunity to the virus with him. I also shared her comment on how she wasn't going to test her theory, though! (Matt is bi-racial and I told him that day that maybe he was slightly protected...but not to count on it!)

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita are stuck in a hospital on the Gold Coast in Australia, about 1.5 hours South of where I live with the Corona virus, luckily they are reporting it being mild so far and are receiving excellent medical care. They were here filming a movie and I suspect a lot of the cast and crew will probably have it.

This was the article: https://www.thesouthafrican.com/new...date-experts-baffled-africa-why-not-infected/

Here is another one: https://www.france24.com/en/2020030...s-low-coronavirus-rate-puzzles-health-experts

I feel like a bit of an idiot now. I'm aware that the plural of "anecdote" is not "data" but until the NBA player, no black people had tested positive. (The tour group that returned from Europe and tested positive are understood to be white South Africans).

Thanks @Trekkie !!
You're absolutely the opposite of an idiot!!

I sure hope the African continent will continue to be mostly spared by this!!

Morning all, hope everyone is ok. So breakfast news from the UK! There will be a Cobra meeting later and it is anticipated our Government will announce some 'social distancing' strategies. There is much debate over what may be decided and if this will go far enough to slow spread of Covid-19.
Many people now believe we should just 'get on with it' and do an Italy style lockdown rather than doing it piecemeal.

I'm also in the UK and have been puzzled by the government's reaction so far, given the extreme crisis they can see happening nearby in Italy. I'm assuming that they actually WANT a certain percentage of the population to be exposed and start to develop immunity so that we have some form of herd immunity for future seasons (if this turns out to be a seasonal illness like flu, which is presumably a realistic option given it's the same family of virus). It's the only feasible explanation I can think of for not locking things down much sooner, as it's been obvious that community spread has been going on here for a while now. After all, lockdowns, banning international travel and closing schools can be done once as an emergency measure, but if the summer heat doesn't kill off this virus and it comes back next winter, then the world can't keep going through periods of mass self-isolations etc, surely?

I sprayed my packages with Microban and let it sit for 10 minutes...lol Yeah I know, overkill...

@Arcadian No...I don’t think it’s overkill...I’m concerned about my ring coming from David... He hasn’t shipped it yet and I’m already planning how I’m going to wipe the outside envelope with Lysol wipes...let it sit for ten minutes...then open it with gloves outside....

I would have told her very firmly to leave and go home...Thats good you wiped everything down..

They have cancelled school for one of the schools in our district for today because someone at the school was exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. They did not cancel any other schools and no word if it is just for today or what.

We also got an email that they are cancelling all field trips across the district, all gatherings and sports and they have sent out a survey to establish how many families have internet access for distance learning.

It just got real here.

That’s what was happening here 2 days ago. I think we are just south of you. I am not In Fairfield county where CT’s Chief Epidemiologist said:

"If you have a fever and cough, and are in the south western part of the state, you should assume you have the coronavirus. You don't need a test to tell you that's what you have. You should assume that's the illness you have. Most people will get better at home, especially the younger you are, you should talk to your physician to give you advice on how to care for yourself with COVID-19 at home," said Dr. Matt Cartter, CT epidemiologist.

I still don’t understand why we don’t have more tests?!?!?!?!?

My step children’s school was cancelled today due to a known suspected case. It’s already in my county with a doctor testing positive and now more schools are closing. Stay safe everyone. Not just from the coronavirus but the flu too. I’m in hospitals everyday and the flu is still very rampant.

CNN said last night that testing is not happening this week as promised. This is why our numbers are so low. Now I see that we are being told to assume that we have the virus if we have symptoms. What a lovely strategy for trump to keep his numbers down. Then he can tell the American people that we have the lowest numbers of any country.

Hearing that we aren’t getting the full picture in Italy sent chills up my spine. I wonder what we aren’t hearing.

@Loves Vintage, right because without the tests it's all a guessing game then. Our youngest came down with a cold Monday and I kept him home two days, he still has a cough, no fever. I was actually afraid to send him back today because they might think he has the virus.

It would be so helpful if kids who have been sick could be tested before going back to school, it's a moot point though if they go to distance learning.

Btw we are in Middlesex county so probably not that far from you!

I watched a video of a man who had the virus. He had been on the Diamond Princess. He said everyone got a fever of over 103 and had a dry cough that didn’t have any phlegm. He said the hospital staff filled him with Gatorade. We’d better stock up now while it’s still on the shelves!

And if the poor guy (in CT) who contracted the illness got it from say a shopping cart, then who else used the shopping cart?

My husband said this morning that more people are being tested in the Netherlands on a daily basis, than have been tested in the US in total. Not sure his source, and don't have time to go looking.

I hope your son is feeling better! We've been keeping my son home from pre-school just because my husband works from home so it's easy enough for us to do. Very concerned about community spread, not just because of ourselves, but because we do not want to unknowingly spread to others.

P.S. Are you going shopping this morning???? I think morning is probably best time to go.

Early morning shopping is best. this is my last early morning shopping. I will from here on out order online and have it dropped at the porch. The one thing that negates is meat/milk Meat mainly for the dog. The butcher is not allowing people in the shop now. they send the meat out to the curbside, you put it in your own car.
