Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

I don’t care about stuff, just let me know where those big bags of Hershey kisses are being kept!!

Edit: sorry, just being silly. I DO care about stuff, and particularly that it’s not there!

They had plenty of chocolate, just saying:lol-2:!

My mother is currently touring in Europe. She left us a stack of documents and will before she left. She said if she dies, she'll die enjoying her last days. She is fully prepared to be quarantined who knows where.
When is the last time you heard from her?

I was thinking about the grocery shopping issue and my first thought was gloves but I think I'm going to bring a garbage bag with me and covering the handle with that because then you can just throw it out after.

That's a good thing that your husband works from home, that is much more convenient with a sick kiddo. Our son is better, he was not super sick but he had all the symptoms that the school would probably worry about (coughing and sneezing). I'm trying to stay as calm as possible because stress weakens the immune system.

That is smart and good idea about using the plastic bag. For some unknown reason, yesterday, I decided to grab the scanner and go around the store, packing and scanning as I go. BAD idea, seemed so germy. But, I guess the food would be less handled then, so maybe a good strategy so long as sanitizing the scanner thing first?

You make an excellent point about staying calm. I am anxiety-prone and basically giving in to the anxiety right now.

Also, 4th (diagnosed by test) case in CT. I say diagnosed by test because we know there are many more.

I’m buying chocolate kisses today and eating A LOT...Help me

The only thing I can help with is bringing by my Hagen Dazs so we can mix it with your kisses. I can only enable, never disable.

I never heard that "the guy in Connecticut" contracted the virus through touching a shopping cart. How did anyone find out? And which guy? I know a man from Wilton was hospitalized in Danbury. I heard, yesterday, that he was in a coma. I have not followed all the cases here but there are not many reported yet. We all have it, but none of us knows it yet. A wonderful situation.

I actually know someone who is currently quarantined in Rome. Apparently southern Italy is not nearly as crazy as northern Italy, but she is loving it. She sent a picture from her balcony, sitting in the sun enjoying her lunch, working from her laptop. *shrug* some people make the best of it!

@Arcadian Last communication was Tuesday of this week. I'm not the type to reach out so I haven't made any attempt to write to her.

The latest thing is there is a mass for my MIL who passed away a year ago, memorial mass. I told DH that I don't think we should go, apparently they "can't reschedule unless the church closes". SMH! He is obese, diabetic, high blood pressure literally every risk factor.

To put it in perspective I asked him if he really thought his mother would want him to risk his health for church. He said "no probably not". I'm hoping that got through to him.

Also the outbreak in South Korea in large part started in a church..

This was the article: https://www.thesouthafrican.com/new...date-experts-baffled-africa-why-not-infected/

Here is another one: https://www.france24.com/en/2020030...s-low-coronavirus-rate-puzzles-health-experts

I feel like a bit of an idiot now. I'm aware that the plural of "anecdote" is not "data" but until the NBA player, no black people had tested positive. (The tour group that returned from Europe and tested positive are understood to be white South Africans).
The most logical explanation is that a less damaging genetically similar virus went thru there in the past giving immunity to the current one.
Not living in the area at the time it went though means no immunity.
Viruses can act as vaccines or partial vaccines for other viruses.
Cowpox is a vaccine for smallpox, which lead to the smallpox vaccine.

Many apologies if my post was unclear. There are now 4 diagnosed cases in CT. (There are likely many more, but not a lot of testing happening here.) The third diagnosed case has been described as an elderly man from New Canaan. His case is presumed to have resulting from community transmission since he has no known connection to anyone else diagnosed. He also hadn't traveled recently. I used shopping cart as a hypothetical example only.

ETA: The patient from Wilton is in a medically induced coma (which I have no idea, but maybe is bc of ventilator use????? Not a medical person here!!)

What flavor are you talking about?

Not sure if its been mentioned yet (or if it matters) but Rudy Gobert is mixed race (white mom, black father).
eta - Rudy is the first NBA player infected.

Also not sure if it matters, but I’m also mixed (mixed race mother, white father) so I guess if Africans are immune our immunity has been diluted :cry:

CNN said last night that testing is not happening this week as promised. This is why our numbers are so low. Now I see that we are being told to assume that we have the virus if we have symptoms. What a lovely strategy for trump to keep his numbers down. Then he can tell the American people that we have the lowest numbers of any country.

Hearing that we aren’t getting the full picture in Italy sent chills up my spine. I wonder what we aren’t hearing.

Trump would be deliberately casting misinformation. When people on social media are doing it, it's one thing. When the top ranking government official is doing it, that's another situation entirely.

Testing is one thing, but treatment is another. When you have a ratio of 2.6 people who die for every 1 person who recovered from the disease, this is a very big point of concern. The current US policies in place have not only underreported the number of cases but have resulted in the CDC and FDA being way behind other countries in determining the correct procedures for treatment, and left healthcare workers ill equipped to help patients recover from the disease. Needless to say, Trump and the current government will only report numbers that make them look good--numbers that can be ruthlessly manipulated to further their political agenda.

I hope the best for everyone in Italy, that sooner rather than later things will be in control once more, so that there's hope for a country like the US that's been late to respond appropriately to the threat.

As far as Africans, African Americans it is far too early to tell. Africa is in the southern hemisphere versus the northern hemisphere. I don't think Karl was saying all Africans have immunity, but just speculating if Africa had a corona virus similar to what is happening now that went through populations, they may have some natural immunity from that exposure. That is just conjecture. Could aslo be there hasn't been as much travel to/from African countries to have become a problem yet.

Also not sure if it matters, but I’m also mixed (mixed race mother, white father) so I guess if Africans are immune our immunity has been diluted :cry:

The 2nd MBA Player is straight chocolate so... Being any % of african is not saving anybody, this virus does not discriminate like that.

14 for Louisiana now with this last one also a resident of the senior living/nursing home complex.

Panic has finally hit here, even though we didn't have a single confirmed case in the area until just this morning. I'm annoyed. I'm in health care, and while we are well stocked up with hand sanitizer, we are quickly running out of cleaning supplies for our clinic. It's a little crazy. Even our commercial supply companies can't provide us with disinfectant wipes anymore, and there's not a single Lysol wipe to be found in any store in town. Fortunately, there's still beach and J cloths/paper towels (even though there's no TP), so we will mix up a spray solution and we'll make do. Store shelves here are completely bare of TP, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant cleaning supplies (mostly the convenience products like the wipes; the spray stuff is all still there as is lots of bleach).

I have been slowly stocking up my pantry. Nothing major, just a little here and there to make sure that we have staples like flour, sugar, oatmeal, rice, and pasta, as well as some canned stuff (mostly tomatoes) and coffee. I did buy some powdered milk just in case. I hate black coffee. And a few chocolate bars.

Lovely and delightful convo today with my lovely and delightful postal carrier (srsly a wonderful person in every way) and I offered her a bleach wipe from my handy dandy pop-up dispenser kept by the front door. She accepted with a smile!

I joked that she probably already had these in her vehicle but she said no, the local post office doesn't provide them, and won't allow them in the mail trucks (?!?!?!) so she secretly carries them in her cargo pants pockets.

With a virus that lives up to 9 days on surfaces... and the 2nd busiest post office branch in the county... oh boy oh boy

Shit just got real. Every single school private or public just closed in my county. This is not a small county by any means. I live near a large metropolitan city.

How are you doing with all that? She sounds like she is doing what my grandmother would.have if she was still with us. (cancer sucks!) I know she enjoyed herself but scared the rest of us while she was doing it...

That’s what was happening here 2 days ago. I think we are just south of you. I am not In Fairfield county where CT’s Chief Epidemiologist said:

"If you have a fever and cough, and are in the south western part of the state, you should assume you have the coronavirus. You don't need a test to tell you that's what you have. You should assume that's the illness you have. Most people will get better at home, especially the younger you are, you should talk to your physician to give you advice on how to care for yourself with COVID-19 at home," said Dr. Matt Cartter, CT epidemiologist.

I still don’t understand why we don’t have more tests?!?!?!?!?

What’s the source of this quote please? My DS and DIL live there and they would like to follow up. Thanks so much.

District next to mine closed due to a positive. Ours will be next I am sure. Have to run!
Stay well all!!

My county has been affected and I'm ticked that school is still going on. My son goes to a private school and I feel like they have the freedom to start online classes by now. I don't know if it is laziness or government regulations of some sort. I kept my son out of school today and will tomorrow but want to all next week, too.
I don't know what to do.

I don't know what to do.

Keep him home and cite the virus concern as your reason. When they get enough kids out, they close down. Parents here also organized petitions to go online or close. Private schools definitely went that way before public.

Not worried, but getting very annoyed. All of the events I had scheduled through March 23 have been cancelled. I’m beginning to feel like I’m in an episode of “The Walking Dead”.

I feel like we’re in “The Twilight Zone”.

We have several cases in neighboring counties. I wish schools would close here but no such luck. They did cancel all field trips, sports, after school activities, etc. but it’s not enough IMO. Why are they so reluctant to close? Many parents here are furious.

I've posted in real time in the other thread.
President Macron just announced drastic measures to slow down the virus.

Now in my county along with all schools ...theaters, gyms and non essential businesses are suggested to close. Gas stations, medical buildings all stay open.
