Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

Well, I reported a couple of weeks ago that my stores had toilet paper. But it seems the tide has turned because there is no TP at Walmart or Aldi today. I had already heard about Walmart but needed some groceries and I prefer Aldi for that. They were totally out of TP, but stock was good with everything else. I hope the people stocking up on TP are also stocking up on food. I took a bag of food to my daughter's house, mostly things for the grandchildren like oatmeal, fruit in containers, organic mac and cheese, etc. She doesn't keep much in the pantry as she just goes to the store a couple of times a week. I am telling her she needs to stock up really soon.

@Mamabean We must think alike. I did stock up on my large dark chocolate bars today. You'll have to make another trip to get your kisses!

We just returned from the beach for a few days. Life seemed normal there. We did go out to eat and restaurants were packed, as usual. I was conscious of the fact that might be the last of normal for several weeks. There are now a couple of cases in a county near us, so it's just a matter of time. I imagine there are many times more people that have the virus than the ones reported, because most people with mild cases wouldn't go for testing. Personally, I'd stay as far away as possible from any medical facility with sick people, unless it's an absolute emergency. I'm taking vitamin C and D and maybe some elderberry temporarily to boost the immune system.

Governor Inslee just signed an executive order closing all k-12 schools in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties closed by March 17 and they will be closed until at least April 27. The state school chief executive was at the same press conference and says people should be prepared for the schools to remain closed "well I to the fall."

(For an idea, this covers much of western WA including Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Bellevue, and more. The biggest populations in the state, pretty much.)

@diamondseeker My daughter-in-law and son thought I was exaggerating..Now Virginia declared a state of emergency..She will be working from home with a just turned three year old. She’s still on the line at the store trying to get supplies in..
I take Airborne which has Vitamin C in it. I take D3 normally because I was deficient. His much elderberry do you take?

@TooPatient How does it work if school is out for the year? Do kids go back to their current grade? What about seniors? You may or may not know but I am thinking out loud. This is getting scary.

I have been wondering the same things! I think everyone is. No good answers right now. Schools are scrambling. Parents are scrambling.

District board is having a meeting tonight to decide if they are closing schools and cancelling all sports for the season, including my daughters lacrosse. I work for a promotional products company that our largest clients are universities. Orders are being cancelled nonstop now with all the schools closing. It’s pretty quiet here today.

They have cancelled schools in some of of major cities including Hartford, the news was asking parents what they will do with school being closed until further notice and they said they didn't know. The schools in Hartford are closed indefinitely but they will re-evaluate in two weeks. The governor has waived the 180 day school requirement so the missed time will not need to be made up the end of the year.

We have s fifth case, a child here is a breakdown from WFSB news site:

Wilton: The patient is between the ages of 40 and 50. The infection is believed to have happened during a trip to California.

Bethlehem: A female in her 60s who is a healthcare worker at Bridgeport Hospital tested positive

New Canaan: An elderly man tested positive on Wednesday. The case is not connected to any known cases in the state, and Dept. of Public Health is assisting medical professionals to conduct the contract trace investigation.

Stratford: A child tests positive for COVID-19. Before the positive test was announced, Wilcoxson Elementary School was closed after learning a student was exposed to a confirmed case of the coronavirus. All schools will now be closed until further notice.

Stamford: Patient did not contract virus in the United States or in Stamford. The patient returned from international travel on March 10 and was preemptively isolated at Stamford Hospital. They tested positive on March 11.

As of Thursday afternoon, the state laboratory has tested 95 individuals, with six of them being positive. One of the positive tests was from a woman who lives in New York, but tested positive in CT.

My friends at Google are all working from home until further notice and it is reportedly very difficult. :-/

Difficult? As in technically since they aren't set up or as in just the situation?

Thank you for the comprehensive information on Connecticut, StephanieLynn. I just heard Governor Lamont on television. What he said led me to believe that only Fairfield County schools were closed down indefinitely (being the closest to New Rochelle, New York). My sister-in-law teaches at an elementary school a few miles north of Hartford. Now I am wondering if her school is shut down. My brother serves as the vice chair on their Board of Ed. I bet he is busy. I am sure that if schools close or did close, the Board will be worried about the welfare of the children; their nutrition; and how their parents will cope with child care if they work. Ever since my brother retired, that "volunteer" position on the Board of Ed has kept him hopping! (He has also had his first grandchild this year. He will turn one next month.)

Someone in my DD’s office is presumptively positive. Because of HIPA they can’t tell the others who it is. Her office is closed until further notice. Now she can’t come home. And she’s sick too. :( No fever though.

I'm sorry! I hope she doesn't have the virus or that at is very mild for her. Sending lots of healthy dust her way.

I’m an hour from Philadelphia...We just got notice that police officers in our county were in contact with a confirmed case of the Coronavirus...It’s just a matter of time..
@diamondsR4eVR When you say it’s on lock down....what does that exactly mean?

In my county it’s like a state of emergency due to the 22 confirmed cases that I’m aware of. ALL schools closed in the county and all non essential businesses are urged to close as well except for medical buildings and the like. Does that make sense?

I think in Hartford they are giving an "indefinitely" just so parents expect it to be a long period and to prepare for that. Although I don't think they will reopen after they revisit the matter in two weeks, at that point it will probably be even more widespread.

So far I’m still working. I’m in medical sales and work in hospitals so it’s been challenging for us to say the least.

DH just came back from the pharmacy, our insurance BCBS will not cover any extra months of medication for his Janumet so he can have extra on hand. The medication outside of insurance is $570 a month.

Has anyone had this experience or is this unusual? I guess we will just have to fill it month by month.

ETA: he is also on blood pressure meds so our out of pocket would be higher than that $570. I am also on Metformin for my PCOS but can go without it if need be since I'm not diabetic.

I work for specialty pharmacy. Have you called the manufacturers themselves (google their names but make sure you don’t hit the Ad button), to see what they are doing for their patients that may be immunosuppressed and would like addt info on how to get more meds during this “pandemic”?

I know the pharmacy can call the insurance and get a “vacation override” so that they will cover it. Or they could 10 years or so ago when I worked in a retail pharmacy

My friends at Google are all working from home until further notice and it is reportedly very difficult.

My stepson works for Google and his job requires a lot of national and international travel. He's grounded for the foreseeable future. He said he knew Google was serious when they stopped serving food at the office. Curious why your friends find working from home difficult?

My company went work-from-home today. I'm up in a suburb of Rockford with TR... and he seems completely oblivious. I met him at the grocery store and he made fun of me for buying extra stuff... because "there are no cases in Winnebago county." Let me rephrase that with a voice of reason: There are no REPORTED cases in Winnebago county YET.

His kids are on spring break next week, and I'm afraid their school will get shut down beyond that. I am NOT prepared to stay up here and babysit the ferals for an extended period of time, especially while he's out going to work and doing through the Culver's drive through and pumping gas... and.. and.. and ... all without any precautions whatsoever. Getting him to wash his hands when he comes in from somewhere virtually takes an act of Congress.

#I'mGonnaEndUpWithThis

UGH

WA declared a state of emergency. I don't remember if it was included in that, or a separate executive order, but all insurance is required to provide a one time additional refill for all medications without any penalty for early refill.

@StephanieLynn, My mom had the same problem. Medicare only pays for one month at a time for her COPD inhaler.

There are two cases in our county now. Both cases are considered community spread, One of the patients was at the hospital 10 minutes from our home.

All schools in New Mexico, Ohio, Maryland and Kentucky are to close. What isn’t this happening across the country?

@Sending dust to your daughter @Slick1 .

@TooPatient @Txborn79 @diamondsR4eVR and @Calliecake, thank you so much for all the info and help, we are under a state of emergency so I will have to look into that and see if we can do anything about it.

@Calliecake, I'm so sorry that they won't do anything for your mother especially with having COPD!

If you can’t get your prescription I’d reach out to the manufacturer directly to see if there’s aid you can apply for to bypass insurance or ask your doc for help. Sometimes they may be able to write you a prescription for 2 months in tricky ways if the insurance company is being super rigid about it. And worse case scenario you can get some advice about if you really can’t access the specific med, if there’s a close generic you should buy for emergency scenario that could do an ok if not ideal job. Janumet is a combo med of metformin and sitagliptin, the latter being the expensive part. But maybe getting metformin alone (pretty cheap out of pocket with a goodrx coupon) would be better than nothing for a few weeks? I’d talk to his doc for advice.

Yes, I tried to get a prescription filled for 6 months worth of my thyroid medication at the pharmacy. I am barely functional without it.
My insurance company will not cover the additional prescriptions. I have to pay for the 6 month prescription in cash.

This is exactly why it is difficult for them. It’s different people, managing events for various Google products, and the slow down will cost money. They won’t be traveling for site inspections, and programs will end. If Google isn’t going to generate revenue, those products will cease to exist. Their future is on the line.

I would check goodrx.com for prices of different strengths. For some meds you can get away with paying less by buying higher Mg tabs and breaking them in half. Definitely talk to the pharmacist though since you can’t do this with all meds.

This seems like such a humane and easy thing to do that I don't understand why it hasn't become a requirement nationally.
