Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

If you would’ve asked me a few days ago I would’ve said no. Now my answer has changed. I am very concerned. My Husband is a first responder. There is a gentleman in his line of work that has contracted the virus. He is a younger guy, under 50, with supposedly no underlying health conditions (They screen them yearly and if he had anything he would not be allowed to work in this line of work) The gentleman is currently in grave condition and is not going to make it. This has been a major wake up call to my husband and I. We have since become more educated on what to virus actually is and how easily it is transmitted. Washing your hands is not gonna do enough. if you are in close quarters and breathe the same air as an infected person you will become contaminated. People are highly contagious before they show symptoms. What’s really scary is how it is affecting everyone so differently. This is way more contagious than your common flu. My husband has gone on several calls for coronavirus patients the past few days and has a coworker that he has been closely working with that is waiting for test results. If his test is positive then my husband has a virus. I am pretty confident given my husband’s line of work that this virus is going to go through my household. I am not panicking but I am educated and concerned.

Yeah it is definitely airborne! I am so sorry about your DH's colleague. :(I hope you and your family stay well.

I wouldn't want to be traveling now. Sounds like a full national shutdown is getting more likely.

Thank you too patient, I am planning to Bombard him with as much material as I possibly can in hopes to change their minds. I think I am going to be sick. I know they are old enough to make their own decisions but as a mom it breaks my heart that he won't reconsider.

Well there’s a real chance if he flies out he may not be able to fly back if things get worse and they lock down movement by air/train

My coworkers husband is a doctor and will be in the icu in the next few weeks and he and his coworkers had to review Italy’s recent ethics guidelines on triaging ventilators. It’s horrific and sobering as a doc to have to read this kind of thing as part of preparing to do your job. I told my coworker I’d pick up her shifts for her if she needed to be at home with her kiddos so he could do his work in the icus.

I liked the simulators in this article. Fun to watch the little balls running around. Good information about how much of a difference slowing this down can make.

@Cluless maybe interesting to add to you stack as you work on talking sense into your son.

Thanks too patient, making the grade posted this and I shared with him.
This is his response:

Now I have plenty of material to read for my trip while in San Francisco

It's as if he wants to hurt me on purpose? Don't know, maybe better just let it go for my own sanity and wish for the best, ah kids.

Yes making the grade ,I shared my concern about this also to no avail.

People are stubborn and at times, silly. At my house, the 13 year old was supposed to go to a birthday party with 5 kids today. His mom said no. But she's still taking him to Miami for spring break. That a giant WTH. I would probably say ok to small party, as it's even smaller than school at the kids house, but no to the trip.

I imagine in the next week everything there will be closed too so what’s the point to fly there?

Well Miami beaches are closed so.....

Malls are starting to shorten their hours. I'm not 100% sure what the point of it is, notes just say for the health and safety of employees and customers, they will be operating on a reduced schedule.

Yeah I am SMH right now. Our very dear friend who is a pulmonologist no less is still planning the St Paddy's Day Pub Crawl to go on as planned. Greg and I said no we aren't going this year when he texted us saying it's still on...WTH! He is a pulmonologist. Can you imagine the Bars in NYC on St Paddy's Day? It's mayhem and yes while I hope it is way less crowded this year any pub crawl IMO is a bad idea. I really don't understand his thinking. I mean I know it's gone on straight for over 3 decades with our group but sometimes one has to adapt to circumstances and be smart. Right? Am I crazy? And yes I am very sad we aren't going because it is an amazing time every year but we are making the smartest choice IMO under the circumstances.

I am going to miss wearing my green wig and new St Catty's Day leggings!

Last year's Pub Crawl. I didn't have the St Catty's Day leggings last year though....

I stocked up on Guinness extra stout when I went to Target Thursday, I'll be crawling around my living room!

For cleaning mostly, its what they're doing here. grocery stores have to make sure their workers stay healthy and to do stock, the only way to really do that is to shorten the amount of hours they're open to customers.

My husband told me the Cdc is recommending schools be closed for 8 weeks or more. This doesn't affect my 15 year old because she is homeschooled but it does the 3 attending University. We are all home and staying away from people. The only real outing is to the barn. They have cancelled all horse shows so it's just lots of practice.

Also for those who might be thinking of traveling around the US, please consider that TSA are also people and they are also falling ill from this. If enough of them start getting sick they will in turn shut down airports.

What is currently happening in some of the major hubs as people are flying back from abroad is frightening. Lots if not all of those people will become ill from this because its airborne.

I'm sad to hear about your husband's coworker. from the study I read its usually because sepsis sets in and thats very hard to come back from. I'm sorry and my condolences.

We live in Florida! And he hates the beach. It makes zero sense. She wanted to go for herself.

Then she's stupid! The EOC Level is now at 1. at the rate we're going, she'll be able to MAYBE go to a dog park or CVS...lol The club scene is very lively in Miami Beach, I do wonder if they're going to be made to shut down.

Making The Grade Thank you for sharing this. I am worried sick for my son and his wife , they had made plans to leave for San Francisco tomorrow before the Coronavirus. They are still planing on leaving because yeah, hey, they're young and blah blah , blah. Hoping this will help in changing their minds, but I strongly doubt it.

Clueless, how old are they?
My heart goes out to you. I’ve been right where you are now...helplessly watching your kids do stupid stupid dangerous things. Please take care of yourself, and you will be in my thoughts. Hoping a good outcome for everyone . I am really angry for you right now.

This is crazy! Taking a day or two for technical difficulties I get, but closing online lessons for "probably several weeks" in order to get federal funding for school meals when they already have their existing budget plus huge support from local companies is crazy. Very hard on the kids. Takes away their normal routine and makes them anxious.

From one of my clients in Maryland (we're working some things out as far as what we can do online)

A Message from County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles
covid19 updates
Dear Montgomery County Resident,

In our County’s ongoing effort to keep you informed of the latest, most critical and accurate information, I would like to explain a bit from a medical standpoint about the process regarding testing for COVID-19. We’ve been getting hundreds of calls and emails asking where to get tested for the virus. Allow me to provide some guidance.

Public health workers here in Montgomery County have been working around the clock for the past several weeks in partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and health departments around the region.

Currently, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) criteria dictates the only people who should be tested for COVID-19 are those who have symptoms AND travel history in the past 14 days to specific countries where COVID-19 is widespread (China, Iran, Italy, Japan and South Korea) or symptoms AND close contact with a known confirmed case.

While the availability of testing kits has increased in the past week to more community-based laboratories, hospitals and urgent care centers, the decision to test someone for COVID-19 is still based on CDC criteria. The need for testing will be determined by a medical professional based on testing criteria or with additional consultation of State or local public health officials in some instances where individuals have concerning symptoms that do not meet established testing criteria.

Health care locations have told us that people are angry when they are told no testing is available or they are not recommended for testing and there have been a few incidents of angry and upset individuals becoming disruptive to staff and others.

I know many people are anxious to “know their status,” but the reality is that there are not enough test kits nation-wide currently to make “on demand” testing available. That may change in the future, but that is the current situation. In Montgomery County, we are actively working to develop potential ways to increase access to testing for those who need it based on their medical condition.

My recommendation to everyone remains the same: if you are having symptoms AND you have travel history or exposure to a known confirmed case, call your health provider and notify them before you go into their office, so that they can take proper precautions. If they determine you meet the criteria and have ruled out other illnesses, such as influenza (we are still in flu season) and other possible causes of your symptoms, they may recommend testing.

Commercial laboratories, hospitals and urgent care centers will not perform walk-in testing at this time.

I will repeat the advice I have been giving for several weeks:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Take everyday preventive actions
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, or having been in a public place.
    • If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
    • Cover your cough and sneeze into a tissue or your sleeve
    • Stay home from work if you are sick and try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • To the extent possible, avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public places – elevator buttons, door handles, handrails, handshaking with people, etc. Use a tissue or your sleeve to cover your hand or finger if you must touch something.
    • Wash your hands after touching surfaces in public places.
    • Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, etc.
    • Clean and disinfect your home to remove germs: practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces (for example: tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks & cell phones)
  • Pay attention for potential COVID-19 symptoms including, fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If you feel like you are developing symptoms, call your doctor.
  • If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. In adults, emergency warning signs include:
    • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
    • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
    • New confusion or inability to arouse
    • Bluish lips or face

We are working to keep you up date with new information once it’s confirmed. Visit our COVID-19 webpage and follow us on Facebook at /montgomerycountyinfo and Twitter @MontgomeryCoMD.

I wish everyone would self isolate in their home so we could slow down the curve. We have been told our daily lives will change for a few weeks now. We need to accept that and do whatever is possible to help keep everyone safe. Right now that is staying in our homes.

Welp we finally got our work from home order. My husband works in sales and so far they aren't showing any signs of closing up, and he can't really work remotely at all.
