Yay Harriet, another non-Aussie who eats Vegemite

How long did you live here for?

My Australian-born cousin who lives in Colorado, owns a childcare centre, she is getting them all addicted to vegemite.

Harriet, what about Cherry Ripes, and Iced Vo-Vo''s, and Twisties??

Not long enough -- just 2 years. But, I ate Vegemite growing up.

Cheese Twisties! I can''t believe that I used to like the chicken-flavoured ones.

Chicken Twisties are the best, though I will eat cheese because FI doesn''t like the chicken

Burger Rings are also good

Burger rings?!
6.gif

Harriet haven''t you ever had burger rings....OMG sooo good.

No, I haven''t. Ya sending me some?
9.gif

Sure why not, along with some violet crumble and should I include timtams
31.gif
.

They are hell addictive

Don''t forget lammingtons and some pavlova. Is vegemite available in the states?? This surprises me as I am yet to meet a non-Australia who likes it.

vegemite is available at specialty places (mostly british food shops which have an aisle of Aussie stuff). Aussieproducts.com also carries it. But most expats usually get a jar here and there from folks back home passing through.

I have cherry ripes right now in the kitchen. But my all time fave is Picnic...LOVE those. Best chocolate ever with the exception of Haighs. I don''t even bother with American stuff.

Dee, I know vegemite is good for you. Most things that taste like crud are...
9.gif

And I have had good meat pies...apparently villi''s is good? I like it, but I don''t know what all the crazy fuss is about. Probably in the same way most non-Koreans don''t get Kimchee (which I admit, is foul if you don''t grow up with it).

mishB, I have no idea what snag is, but it sounds nasty.

TGuy LOVES twisties!

You know what I cannot simply find here? Is GOOD bread. Our bread, as TGuy says, is sweet. It always has a touch of sugar, molasses or honey. Aussie bread does not...and it is SO soft and yummy. Just plain grocery store stuff like Noble Rise. I gotta say, you Aussies know how to do proper bread. Stuart Appleby (pro Aussie golfer) said in an interview that Americans can''t do bread. However he says Aussies can''t make a good sandwich...just an anemic slice of meat and they call it a sandwich, while Americans pile it high and yummy. He says Americans probably do that because our bread is so crap though.

I''ve found nearly everything that TGuy loves here though with the exception of bread and proper cream to put on dessert...stuff like Pura. I''ve found Ginger Beer, timtams, proper ginger ale, Coopers Pale Ale, and meat pies (there''s a local Aussie place that opened up called MoJo that serves coffes and pies, awesome!). But there''s always something he misses from home and I feel bad for him.
15.gif

Wow Tgal you really have done your research. I had no idea our bread compared so well to yours.

Just a caution about Vegemite - I love the stuff and it is a good source of B Vitamins but it is also high in salt and contains preservative 220 which is a sulphite and which is not considered good for anyone who suffers from asthma. Interestingly there was some controversy recently when the government here flagged plans to ban products that did not fall within healthy eating guidelines and it was pointed out that Vegemite would not meet these proposed guidelines .
23.gif

Vegemite is a delicacy
18.gif
.

T-Gal I heard the same thing from another American friend who had Aussies stay with him about the bread, I honestly never noticed it when I was in NY but then I don't really eat bread and the time I did it was french toast covered in maple syrup and cinnamon (first time in my life I have eaten french toast like that usually I have Vegemite on it
2.gif
), but man did I miss real bacon (first thing I ordered when I got to London). American tastes and Aussie tastes are really different, but you guys do wicked iced tea's OMG sooo good I am still dreaming about the peppermint iced tea I had in Soho. As for the bread you could always get a bread machine and make your own bread I don't think it is hard but man the smell of fresh baking bread gets to you while your cooking it.

Poor T-guy, I feel for him but I think it is so sweet though that you go to so much trouble to find all that stuff, I was away for 7wks and I seriously nearly died from cravings for BBQ chips.

softly softly I am shocked, I always considered Vegemite a healthfood, I seriously lived off the stuff as a child.

ETA A snag is a sausage :) and T-gal What is Kimchee?

Dee, funny you should mention burger rings - Fi just bought home a bag the other day - he said he had an urge to eat some. Until then, I hadn't eaten them nor thought about them probably since school!
I'm loving this walk through the finer points of Aussie cuisine..

Tgal, thats a shame about the bread - we love bread in my house, can't go past a great loaf of sourdough.

Speaking of which, anyone have any big plans for 'stralia day this w'end?

Dee this is the article that refers to it:

Not sure how I feel about the government trying to control my food choices. I prefer to think I am responsible enough to do that myself. Guess if this happens there won''t be too many ''happpy little vegemites''.

Tgal question for you does TGuy use a ''stubbie cooler'' when he drinks beer and is this considered weird in the states?

I would protest if they banned Vegemite and hoard the stuff, I can eat it by the spoonful it is an iconic Australian breakfast food.

*stands on soapbox* Honestly if they are so worried about food choices maybe they should have stricter guidelines under what supermarkets can put into the health food aisle and more transparent labeling of foods. 90% of the food found in health food isles is NOT HEALTHY urgh and marketing something as low fat but having a ton of sugar again NOT HEALTHY. And this crap of % of daily recommended intakes on labels now what a crock 8700kj daily is not a healthy adult diet.

Also making true healthy food cheaper would be a great start, it is cheaper to eat junkfood and take away then it is to eat a decent healthy meal in this country, it is absolutely ludicrous. *off soapbox*

AJ I am going to a birthday BBQ bash and playing some beach cricket nothing too exciting, how about yourself?

Hi Dee - nothings established yet, likely will go down the foreshore to eye the fireworks with some mates at some point, as is tradition here...may just watch them from our balcony at home than head out..*shrugs*
However, the police have warned they will be trying to stop *everyone* from drinking this year at the foreshore, not just the bogans/troublemakers..
33.gif
Odd, I have no idea how they plan to enforce that!

Sounds like a plan, don''t forget to eat lamb it would be un-Australian not to :)

We''ll be home this year for Australia Day, usually we are in the US, but we are leaving later this year. We''ll probably throw some snags and lamb chops on the barbie.

One thing I would miss if I lived in the US for an extended period - good cheese, what''s with that orange stuff? And good coffee, and the range of tropical fruit we have here.

And Smith''s crinkle cut chips.

Pavlova! Especially with passionfruit puree. Vegemite can be found. DH has acquired a taste for it.

ETA: I make a killer pav

, and if anyone is a coleiac (sp?) Patties makes fantastic gluten free lammingtons :).

FI's mum makes a deadly sticky date pudding, it is sooooo good.

I''d really like to make it to the Gold Coast. Help me convince DH. He thinks Oz is too far.
P.S. Great, now I have Peter Allen stuck in my head.

Pish Posh not to far at all

, I have flown out to NY it is really not that bad, you can always make a stop in Asia on the way ;) retail therapy :).

Personally I think there are much better beaches then the Gold Coast (which for me is Surfers Paradise) they are good but I always like to head out a little further out to Mermaid beach or Currumbin. The spit is good near Marina Mirage, we have the most fantastic jewelery store there
30.gif
. The Sunshine Coast is good (you can always go to Australia Zoo as well), some lovely beaches up that way.

What does your hubby like to do? I can probably help you make a list of reasons :D. Does he like seafood we have some of the worlds best seafood and fresh produce. Fishing is good and we have loads of beer LOL.

Coming here would be a really great way to unwind after living in NY I felt like we lived in a small country town after visiting there.

He likes to veg out on a beach. I dragged him to Sydney for New Year's one year, but the devil isn't in a hurry to go back.
P.S. He loves Balmain Bugs.

I don't mind Sydney, I much prefer Melbourne the shopping and atmosphere is better. Comparing beaches Surfers to me is much nicer then Bondi, if he just loves to laze mermaid beach is good for that it is a lot quieter then Surfers nothing like sitting on the beach eating fish and chips - so romantic. Just think while he lazes you can shop :) also if you like pizza there is also a fantastic pizza shop just down off the main walk, it beat any pizza we had in Italy.

I have no idea what Balmain Bugs are but I assume they are the same thing as Morten bay bugs which are from QLD, (a perfect reason to visit fresh straight from the location) your hubby has good taste a good bug is hard to pass up.

I could so go some fish, chips and bugs right now
