Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

jas, you are so silly!

Indy, I''m glad you found a great doctor. I am sorry you are screwed with your insurance though for the 1st trimester screening! Is there any way to work around it? Is there any way you can take the test in your current state before you move?

I finally heard back from the doctor''s office and my glucose test results are all normal! HORAY! I am so relieved!

SNLEE HURRAY about the glucose test!
Re the scan, I''m going to call my OB here and find out if I can just do it a little early. I would rather have the continuity of doing it with the doctors who will actually be looking after me from now on, not to mention that I don''t think my OB really knows what he''s doing with monochorionic twins, but whatever!

Erica, I was lusting over those 7 for all mankind jeans on pea in the pod, but I couldn''t bring myself to do it! ARGH!

Met with our new ped. group -- I puffy heart them!!!!

I am sleeping about 16 hours a day!! Methinks I''m getting there....

My in-laws are hovering so much...if they could put me on a leash, I think they would.

QT -- how are you doing today??? I think 8/8/8 is great...and you can give birth with the Olympics Theme playing in the background!
Indy -- glad to hear you are getting great care. And yes, our insurance situation/health care system is in serious need of an overhaul. Yea maternity clothes. I strongly encourage the secret fit belly (the one with the full bands rather than the "underbelly" bands...by 3rd trimester it makes all the difference
Hey Burk!
Peony -- I think it really depends on a lot of things. My guess is that, unless you have multiples in there, you will be able to hide the pregnancy until you want to tell people.
Dreamer -- yeah, you''ve got preggo bloat. It''ll go away...just in time for you to start showing.
21.gif
I was in maternity clothes by 13 weeks, but ya know, I''m carrying double trouble.
Hi Tgal -- yeah, I''m with you...I HATED every "maternity" thing I needed to get, and I certainly can''t stand to look at myself in the same clothes anymore.
lili -- Hey! I am not looking forward to the wedding at all...but I''ll try to keep an eye on everything and bring back a fun story or two.
Gemma -- LOL -- I prefer your term "shimmy" to the more popular "waddle." Much sexier. I think 37 weeks is pushing it for a shower...maybe 32?

I am TOTALLY craving chips and onion dip.

snlee - YAY on passing the 3 hrs test!!!

erica - I don't have A Pea in the Pod "secret fit belly" denim, but I do have the one from Motherhood. I didn't want to spend a lot of maternity clothes and the one I got from Motherhood was only $19.95. I think they are the same as far as the panel goes, not sure about the quality of the denim. I love the "secret fit belly" panel because it stretches with my growing belly. I ended up getting "secret fit belly" shorts and capri when it started getting hot.

Indy - I've heard really good things on maternity SFAM jeans, but I couldn't bring myself to spend so much either. Some ladies say it helps them feel "normal". Hope you get something works out with the dr and insurance.

jas - underwears are not needed. that's how you get pregnant. LOL.

Gemma - I think a shower at 37 weeks is fine if you are getting the big items/necessities before then. My two work showers were at 37 and 38 weeks, and it was fine with us because we got our own furniture, stroller and carseat. It would be PITA to go out and get the big items at 37 weeks.

HIP HIP HOORAY! Yay Snlee! What a relief. I wanted to check back in on you today.

I am really worried about Eph too. I thought about putting out a page on the main FH&H page but don''t want to draw attention to her. I hope she''s reading even if she can''t post and knows how much everyone is thinking about her.

Thanks all for your thoughts on the shower. I''m going to have a look at when we move because it would be good to do the shower once we are settled in. It''s good to know that although 37 weeks is pushing it no one''s said ''ARE YOU MAD, WOMAN??'' This is not easy for a control freak like me who wants to have everything planned-good practice for when we have the bebe I guess.

Indy I''m glad your talk with the dr went well. So what is going to happen with your scans when you move?? I cannot get my head around how the insurance etc works in the US.

DD you are describing my 1T EXACTLY. Fine in the am, so bloated in the pm that when I got changed out of scrubs I couldn''t put my clothes on properly. It settled down when the MS did. Also the acne-
14.gif
My skin is not the best and I went and got a facial early on in 2T and since then...fingers crossed it continues to look okay. I''m glad you''ve been feeling better. Hope that drinking lots of H2O works for you!

Erica I had some hair loss in 1T which settled down by about 11-12 weeks and now I have LOTS of hair. Yay for the belly band! Do you have a link to the Japanese wrap? Sounds intriguing!

Jackie you are hysterical. Underwear-optional. Clothing-mandantory!

Right I am over the unattractive hoiking of the maternity trousers. Next day off I am heading to 2PinaP to get myself some jeans that will stay up. I don''t really care if they come with suspenders, as long as they don''t fall off when I stand up
11.gif
.

JAS, great, now I''m craving chips and onion dip too. Thanks a lot, girl!

Gemma, I don''t know really, but if I had to guess, I''d say do it at 37 weeks and have a careful plan to quickly get what you still need. What are the chances you''d go that early? Do you know the stats?

As for my scans when I move, as of Sept. 1st, my new (much, much better) insurance kicks in since I start my new job, so I''ll be A-OK from then on. Goodbye co-pays! Goodbye HMO! Hurray! It''s just the two weeks between our move and the new job starting that are a problem. I''m going to call them and see if they can start my insurance early. We mucked around with the job start date for visa reasons, so they may be amenable to that.

Gemma, these haramakis are so darn cute!. Not sure they''re worth ordering from Japan, but I''m such a sucker for anything kawaii. I definitely get a stomachache in cold restaurants, but my real problem is that I have really cold hands and feet (poor circulation?). Also, thanks for chiming in about hair loss. I hope my hair stops falling out at such a rapid rate after this first trimester ends.

Q, thanks for the tip on the Motherhood secret fit jeans. I admit, every single pair of denim that I own cost at least $150, if not $220, but spending that much for maternity wear seems wrong! I''ll have to go to my local store and check out the denim. For 3-5 months wear, I''m sure the denim quality will be good enough, though.

Indy, those Sevens sure look purdy. I''m so obsessed with fashion, it''s a little sad. I haven''t bought any new clothing in nearly 2 months, which must be a record for me! Right now I''m contemplating a new coat, but I already own 12 coats and jackets--none of them are suitable for pregnancy, naturally.

Did any winter mamas buy maternity tights? Will I be fine buying a size up in my regular wool tights?

snlee Yippeee!
36.gif
I am sooo happy you passed, that is great news!

Gemma + Jas well that is funny about 1st T bloat, I had never heard of it before this forum! I guess women really vary in how much they retain water etc. I never had an issue with it when I was on the pill, but once I went off it it went crazy. Must be my bodies reaction to progesterone? Anyways, here''s hoping it passes in a few more weeks.

QT LOL optional underwear... I have always prefferred commando, to be honest, but it isn''t exactly "classy"
2.gif
or approriate.

Indy I am indeed having the NT scan. In large part I want it done because I want some proof positive there is actually a baby in there
20.gif
I''m kind of a seeing is believing sort of person, and I have a hard time with blind faith, so this whole "no check up until 10 weeks, no u/s until 12" is really hard for me! And I would also like to know the results. DH and I have talked about what we would do if it turns up something and I''m not honestly sure what we would do! We can think about it all we like, but if my education in psychology has taught me anything, its that people are terrible at predictign their emotional reactions to things or of predictign how they would behave in a given situation. So we think, "Oh we would X for sure" but in reality, who knows? All I know is that I want to know as much as I can know without undue risk... so no CVS or amnio unless there is something clearly scary or bad on the NT. But then what about the false positives??
33.gif
Gah the decisisions! I wish I could have blind faith, but I simply cannot.

Thanks ladies for sharing my excitement!

My advice for the 1-hour glucose screening is, even though your doctor says you don''t need to, fast and get the test done with in the morning. I should have done this. Maybe I would have passed the first time? No use thinking about that now but when I have to do it again, I''m going to fast at least 10 hours before.

It seems like hardly anyone does kick counts anymore. But my doctor''s office wants me to so I start today at 28 weeks. Since the baby is usually most active after you eat, I''m supposed to rest comfortably on my side after dinner, and see how long it takes to feel 10 movements. I am actually excited to do this. I love analyzing numbers so it''ll be interesting to see how long it takes me to feel 10 movements. I know by the end of the week I''ll probably be tired of doing it though.
3.gif

Indy, I forgot to say great find on the maternity clothes bargains! I only have one pair of maternity jeans, which I got at Old Navy for $20. I live in those. On hot days I wear my stretchy capris, like my gauchos. I''ve probably spent less than $100 on maternity clothes. I couldn''t ever bring myself to spend a lot of designer maternity pants! Where are you moving from/to?

jas, that''s awesome you found a pediatrician that you love! My have an appointment to meet with a pediatrician in a few weeks. My OB recommended her so I''m hoping she is great. 16 hours of sleep a day!? That sounds lovely. Enjoy it while you can!
1.gif

Gemma, what''s 2PinaP? I assume it''s a maternity clothing store but I''ve never heard of it.

dd/indy - i had my nuchal scan done as well. to me it was just another excuse to have an ultrasound and see little jelly, but it was definitely very gratifying to hear that all was well in terms of d/s and the other tests they ran.

snlee - congrats on the glucose test results!

i''m loving the bella band as well - been wearing it for about a week now and it feels pretty secure. i was afraid my pants would be falling down, but it is actually quite snug. you all will hate me, but my hair and my skin have never looked better. i did get 1 zit earlier on but nothing since then.

burk - i can''t believe you didn''t need to wear the bella until week 22! i''m only 14 weeks but my pant buttons are already tight. i''ve always been very slim (5''7", 120lbs) but my bump is definitely starting to outgrow my skinny jeans

QT
I too hope that Meena will come sooner for your sake, but 08/08/08 would be such a cool b-day
41.gif

Just continue doing your walking exercise.
I know it is not easy for you to walk now....have you tried walking in the pool?
One of co-worker did that when her belly get to be too big for her to run (yep...she''s a long distance runner) so she does her jog in the pool.

snlee
Yay for the good results from the GD test.
FIY, I fasted 12 hrs for both the short and long test.
Failed the short test at 195 (when the base line is supposed to be 140 something),
but passed the extended test with flying colors.
So it doesn''t matter if you fasted or not.
I''d probably go straight to the 3 hours test the next time around.
Avoid getting pricked for the first one.

eric k
I don''t think the size of the fetus has anything to do with early dilivery.
Both my sister and I pretty much carried our little ones to full term (a couple of days from the EDD).
We are all 5'' and smaller.

My doctor told me to gain about 25-30 lbs (which is the norm) for my pregnancy.
Is your friend on the heavier side pre-preggo?

Gemma
37 weeks is pushing it for a shower.
One of my sister''s friend scheduled her shower for 37 wks, but her kid came out at 36 wks.
End up pushing the shower back and did it as a 1-month thing instead.

Bella Bands vs. other brands... thoughts? Does it matter which brand you buy?

I wonder if I should get a bella band?? I am just not sure... like you Erica, I wear dresses and skirts almost exclusively in the summer... so that should get me through until September when I will be at least 16 weeks and will probably need maternity pants anyways. I think I will try to old "elastic band through the button hole" trick on my one pair of capris I actually wear in the summer.

That sucks that some of your are getting bad skin
39.gif
I have never had bad skin and still have nice clear smooth skin now. Do not hate me because I am beautiful!
20.gif
If it is any consolation I have alredy gained 4 lbs, all in my belly (usually I gain weight all over my body, so this unusual concentration is annoying!
29.gif
). I am upping the excercise (before any of your worry I will overdo it, I am upping it from none for the last two weeks, I was too tired and let''s be frank, lazy), drinking more water, and trying to just not worry about it since I guess this is what my body wants to do! I am eating well, so who the heck knows what is going on. Oh wait, that''s right... supposedly I am pregnant!
3.gif

I haven''t noticed any hair loss or growth on my head, but I have noticed some rather frightnening hair growth in regions further south... very strange and disturbing given that I know "manicuring" that area will be much more difficult (impossible?) with a giant belly! Ah well!

qtiekiki, just checking up on you! Hope you''re hanging in there. Keep us posted. You might want to try baking?!
2.gif
8/8/08 would be and AWESOME birthday!

snlee, I''m so glad you passed the 3 hour test! What a relief. But I''m going to give differing advice on the 1 hour test!! I agree with getting it over in the morning but I think you should eat something small 2 hours before the test, just to get your metabolism going. I got up at 7:30am, ate a piece of whole wheat bread, showered, got ready, etc. and then took the test at 9:30am. My number was 119! During my first pregnancy, I fasted before the one hour test and my result was 139 (my doctor''s cut off is 135). So I think maybe having a little something a few hours before the test is a good thing. But anyway, I''m so happy that is behind you!

IG, yes, the US healthcare system sucks and I don''t think anyone would be offended by that comment!
3.gif
Regarding underoos, I didn''t buy anything different--still in pre-preg thongs. For the Bella Band, I bought Mimi Maternity''s version of it. Basically the same thing but a couple bucks cheaper. I LOVED mine because I absolutely hate maternity clothes and refused to buy a lot. I just got a lot of regular stuff that is cut big and can be used post-preg. I imagine it''s tougher when you''re carrying twins but try not to pay full price for maternity stuff!

erica, I don''t think height has anything to do with when you give birth, as Tacori can attest to! I''m 5''2" and delivered one day early so I was basically on time. As for jeans, I bought an awesome pair from the Gap--I think it was the City Fit style or something like that. They are great. I got one pair of Citizens of Humanity on sale at Cadeau but the Gap ones were actually much more comfortable! I''m surprised you''re losing hair already because for me, it came after. I guess pregnancy just does a number on your body and everybody reacts differently.

jackie, I''m so glad you like your pediatrician group. It really makes quite a difference. My group is a bunch of women that are all around my age and have their own children and it makes it so great to go there and talk to them about everything. We never have to wait and they call back immediately if you have a question or problem, even on weekends. I can''t believe you''re getting 16 hours of sleep!
6.gif
I''m jealous--if I get up to pee less than 4x/night, I''m happy!

Gemma, I had my shower at 36 weeks and it was fine. I''m the superstitious type so I didn''t mind waiting and it all worked out perfectly because we didn''t all the baby crap sitting around our apartment for months and months prior to the birth. But like q mentioned, we had already purchased the big ticket necessities on our own so we knew we were ok even if I were to deliver early.

dd, yes, the bloat thing is veerrrrrry common but nobody really talks about it! Once you hit the 2nd tri, you''ll feel much better. Regarding the nuchal scan, I know you already know this but it''s just a screening, it''s not diagnostic. You''ll get odds of your chances of having a child with down syndrome or one of the trisomies and then you can decide from there whether or not you want more diagnostic testing (amnio or cvs). I would just take it one step at a time and see how you feel. You don''t need to make these decisions right now so try not to get too stressed out over it just yet.

ephemery, hope you''re doing well. Please check in when you can, we''re all worried.

Thanks curly!

Actually DH and I talked about it and we are on the fence about even doing the NT scan. If I got odds of 1:1000 or better I might feel releived, but with a 10%-20% "miss" rate for true issues, there is still the possibility! And there is a 5% false positive rate too. Part of me wonders if screening tests like this are sort of "smoke and mirrors" because in the end, you still don''t KNOW! Ultimately, it seems to me that pregnancy is a test of blind faith, or optimism, or whatever you want to call it, and no tests are ever going to remove the fears. We''ll probably make the decision after we talk to the midwife.

Aiya! So many posts to catch up on.

First, Snlee, congrats on passing the long test!

IG, hehehe...glad to know you got great bargains. And yes, I think some splurges while preggo is a must. Anything that makes you feel purdy is a GO for sure!

QT, how can you get a better induction date than 8/8/08?
1.gif
Isn''t the the luckiest possible birthday in the world in Chinese culture? I am willing to bet there are a ton of asians out there begging to induce on that date. Hehehe. Either way, I hope she doesn''t wait too late to come out, only because when you get to that stage, it''s frustrating. I only had to wait 3 days after my EDD for my water to break, but I was just on edge. I can''t imagine how Jas12 felt going so long over her EDD. But as she said, they will come out when they are good and ready! My doc wanted to possibly induce at around a week after my EDD because he thought Amelia was going to be over 9 lbs. Yeah right. I had a scrawny 7lb2ozer instead.
20.gif

Re: Jeans...I bought ones from Motherhood which I loved. They are the regular close jeans. I thought I would be snobbier about jeans, but the designer ones didn''t fit me well (too long and I only wore flip flops when I was preggo). I could only wear them to about 35ish weeks however...not because the belly was uncomfy. but I really didn''t want to squeeze my THIGHS into them. Any fashion sense just flew out the window as I got closer to my EDD.

Re: Hair loss. Hardly one hair fell from my head when I was preggo. Now I am a shedding machine. Why is it when babies start learning how to grasp is when your hair decides to fall out? Amelia is going to start crapping out hair if this keeps up because so much of it seems to end up in her mouth!!!

DD, I understand wanting to get the NT test and needing to know as much as you can. Every mom has to make the right decision for her. I''m a generally laid back person but because our pregnancy was SO unexpected, I felt nervous. I got the best result POSSIBLE with the NT scan - 1:10,000 but I STILL opted to do the amnio, which most people would think was overkill. Even the docs said to me when I said I wanted to get the amnio, "You''ve seen your NT results, right?" Yes, I did, but it still didn''t give me peace of mind. I got my amnio results at week 18 and I really began to breathe easy then and enjoy my pregnancy. I had an uncurrent of stress about the whole thing up until then and I didn''t feel that could be a good thing for the baby.

Ephemery, hope you are OK girl...

OK, I just have to b!tch about one more thing re living in the USA and being pregnant. Now that we know the twins are a go, DH got in touch with his employer for next year and asked about their parental leave policy. He will be commuting for 2-3 nights a week to another city. So it''s not just that he won''t be home during the day, he won''t be home AT ALL for 3 or 4 days a week.

So they say he can have 6 weeks. SIX WEEKS?!? That''s f''ing barbaric. So I''m basically going to be a single mom to 6 wk old twins half the week?

I don''t even know what I''m going to do at that point. We can''t possibly afford to hire help given our circumstances next year. And I think I''ll go crazy if my mom (or his mom) stays with us longterm, which may not even be an option for them since they both have lives of their own overseas.

I''m trying not to panic. We''ll work something out. But it really seems completely barbaric that a parent should be expected to return to work after 6 weeks.

Why haven''t women in the US fought to change this legal minimum? I wonder what the politics are that keep that from happening.

lili, no my friend isn''t particularly overweight, so it''s indeed curious why her doctor would tell her to only gain 20 pounds. She''s obviously going to gain more than that, and I don''t think she''s too worried about things.

DD, ever since I started grad school, my skin has been a mess (stress, stress, and more stress). However, it had cleared up pretty nicely under a new skin regimen in the past six months, so the reemergence of bad skin has me feeling pretty discouraged and unhappy. Still swimming, jogging, bicycling, and doing yoga. No matter how tired and nauseated I am at the beginning, I always feel so much better afterward. Any exercise at all is definitely well worth the effort as long as you aren''t overdoing it!

As for the nuchal scan, the only reason we agreed to do it is because I really want to take another peek at the bambino. Plus, as Curlygirl pointed out, it''s just a screening, not a diagnostic. It''s free for us, so heck, why not?

Indy, at least your husband gets some form of leave. I''m guessing/hoping it''s paid leave, which not all places offer, unfortunately. As a grad student I''m allowed to ''stop the clock'' on my dissertation, but that also means I won''t have an income. Sadly I didn''t receive any fellowships or grants that I could sneakily use as a baby fund, so I either teach while nursing a newborn or my husband has to borrow even more money and I miss out on a really important teaching assignment. I''m going to ask for two weeks off, which I know isn''t enough, but hopefully they''ll let me teach. I''m still pretty annoyed with myself for allowing this to happen, but there''s no point in beating myself up too much beyond the usual Catholic guilt.

Anyway, my compromise has been to ask my mother to move in with us even though that means my poor dad will be all alone on the West Coast and I will go crazy with frustration because we live in a small 2br condo (840sq.ft). I know it''s not a very pleasant option, but with two babies..... You might want to consider asking your husband''s mother to help out, or your mother, if her health is up to is and she''s willing. Have you taken a look at the recent NYTimes Magazine article about the slowing birthrate in most developed nations besides the US? It won''t answer all of your questions about why US parental leave is nearly non-existent, but it does help explain why our birthrate remains robust.

Indy, I know maternity and paternity leave in the US sucks big time! Your husband should be able to get 12 weeks off under FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act). I am fortunate I get about 22 weeks off for maternity leave, 4 weeks before delivery and 10 of which are fully paid. What sucks is that my DH and I can only take a combined 12 weeks off for FMLA for the birth of a child because we work at the same company. I''ll be taking the full 12 weeks so he has to take vacation time off - probably 3 weeks or so.

IG- Will they give him 6 weeks for each
2.gif
or 6 weeks for both? Frankly, that is better than average on paternity leave. If he had been at that employer for more than 1 year he could take 3 mo unpaid leave using FLMA, but as a new employee he would have had to negotiate for that at the time of contract negotiations.

You haven't been in the US long, have you? Even the FMLA unpaid leave option was a huge improvement over the previous situation. If one tried to impose generous paid paternity/maternity leave as a government regulation, the Republicans would go on a rant about the harm to businesses of costly government-imposed regulations and how businesses need flexibility to stay nimble and why should business be responsible for paying people to have babies (that would be paying people for doing nothing related to the business!) And especially they would emphasize the harm to SMALL businesses, which are exempt from FLMA and are American like apple pie! And then they would say that if employees really wanted that perk they would already have found a way to get it in the "free market." Since most employees haven't, clearly it isn't important to most, so why should the government get in the way between labor and management on this issue that isn't important to most people.... YadaYadaYada. It can be a shock for people from more socialist governments.

Good luck with your insurance! That at least most people think is broken, just no one can agree how to fix it.

8/8/08 birthday for Meena seems kind of unlikely because I was awakened by cramps and contractions last night at 1:30am. I went to the bathroom and I think I lost my mucus plug because there was a glob of blood in the toilet (sorry if it''s TMI). I couldn''t go back to sleep afterward. The cramps just feel like menstrual cramps and weren''t terribly painful, and the contractions are kind of sporadic (some were 5 mins apart and some were much farther apart). So I figure it''s false labor. Right now I am still getting contractions and cramps, but they are even more sporadic than last night. I''ll just have to wait and see if it leads to anything.

DD - "manscaping" is definitely harder down there with the belly, but not impossible. We didn''t do the NT scan; dr didn''t even offer/mention it to us.

Indy - totally agree that US healthcare system and maternal/paternal leave are horrible.

Glad everyone else who posted is doing well. Hopefully eph will check in soon.

Oooo....this could be it.
I''ll be sure to check this thread for updates
1.gif

Sending you lots of contractions dust!

qtiekiki, sounds like you are in early labor? I''ve heard and read that contractions start out feeling like period like cramps. You are getting close! I am so excited for you! Keep us posted!

I''m really worried about eph. Every time I check this thread I hope she has posted and I even had a dream last night that she gave us an update. I hope she and baby girl are ok!

qtiekiki, this may be the start of something!!! Keep walking around and see if the contractions continue. I''ve heard that the mucous plug can regenerate so that might not be the best sign but if your contractions are still coming and you are sensing a pattern, it could be time to call the doctor!!! I hope this is it for you, keep us posted if you can!

QT my friend just had her second child last week and it all started with mild cramps like you describe and the "bloody show" of the mucus plug escaping! According to her midwife, if you can, stay active moving around as much as possible in the early parts of labour since it can help speed things along. Also, walking up and down stairs can really get things going too, worked like a charm for my friend! Keep us posted, but looks like it'll be soon!

ETA I guess everyone thinks about the whole `to scan or not to scan`issue. I think I will probably do it so I can see the baby and prove it is real
20.gif
, and then take the res tfrom there...

I heard there was a strong earthquake in socal. qtiekiki, hope you''re doing ok!

QT, hope you are OK...sounds like things may get going for you soon.

IG, in the US, the employer has to hold his job for 12 weeks. In California, we also have 6 weeks paid family leave which he could take anytime from birth to when they are 1 year old. We are the only state to have paid family leave

At least you husband is thinking about taking 6 weeks off. Mine went back to work after 2 days.

Yeah we just had an earthquake, and I am fine. I am not sure what''s going on now because I am spotting. I was spotting light pink since the red glob, then I was spotting brown. But now I am spotting bright red again. And the contractions are very far apart. I am going to call my dr at 1pm when they get back from lunch.
