Drive by question: Do I need to drink 32 oz water before the NT scan this week, like a normal ultrasound? They didn''t tell me to, and I just thought of this and wondered.
Yes, full bladder. If it''s too full, they can always ask you to empty a little.

I did, however, decide to paint the walls of our condo different shades of pale grey. Hopefully we won't have to do any scraping, though, since our place isn't deleaded.
6.gif
There are so many layers of paint, hopefully we'll be ok without deleading it (over 100 yr old building, never renovated).

I wouldn't worry about the deleading Erica. Our place is 100 years old and so isn't deleaded either. We had the city inspector come out and test for us and he said that there are only a few instances these days where it is EVER really a problem.

1. Old water pipes that are still lead. Most cities have forced everyone to change them by now, but worth checking to make sure your water doesn't have lots of lead in it.

2. Peeling/cracking walls and paint. And little kids who are going around eating paint chips! Lol. He said really, that as long as the paint is not peeling or cracking and is new paint, esp. if it's been painted over a number of times it isn't a big deal at ALL. He said windowsills are the biggest thing to test if they are wooden because those often peel and don't get painted as often. Consumer Reports this month has a section on the best home lead test kits, I'll dig it out for you. They are cheap and will give you peace of mind. Some cities also have inspectors that will come out and test for you for a small fee. Well worth it for peace of mind!

Our tests are still out, but he basically told us not to worry because all the paint was in wonderful condition and not peeling.

Erica, it if is peeling, just make sure you're not going to get a craving to snack on it either. Mmmmm. Paint chips.
18.gif
nyom nyom nyom.

OK, must be time for my daily smoothie or something.... btw, I tried Starbucks new 'vivanno' smoothie thingies and the mango/orange one is pretty good! It's basically just 2% milk, whey protein powder (yah 16 gms of protein!) and juice. 250 calories. LOTS of nutrients. You can add a banana if you want too but I personally don't like 'em. So that's my new splurge-snack. I figure, it costs the same as a beer, so whenever I would have had a beer, I get a smoothie.
3.gif
It's filled with good things for the cubs, too.

Pave congrats on feeling the baby! Yay!

And all of you, thanks for the info about water intake before the NT, I'll put my drinking boots on and get sipping.

Kay, great pic!

Thanks for the support. I keep feeling better and trying to do stuff, and within a minute or two feel completely fatigued. So I''ve started knitting so that I can feel productive without leaving the couch.

In great timing, we''re going to Vegas on Thursday. My in-laws have a spa day planned for Friday and we''re all scheduled to get deep tissue massages. I read something about that being ill advised, so we called to see if they have any other type of massage that they''d recommend. Turns out that all massage is out in the first trimester. Dang.
39.gif
So, would you guys recommend switching to a facial or to a body masque? I''ve never had either, so I''m not sure which would be better.

Pavelover, that''s so exciting that you''re feeling kicks.

IG, you''ve now gotten me in the mood for a smoothie. That sounds delish.

NF, thanks for the info. We do have some paint that is peeling from the kitchen ceiling. It''s a bit absurd since the place was painted just before we bought it 3 years ago. Hmph! I will definitely get a home lead testing kit, just to be on the safe side.

I don''t know how old our pipes are, but I do know that the plumbing is pretty much a disaster in this building. Lots of leaks and a few ceiling collapses! Does the kit also test water?

Indy, the Vivanno sounds tasty! I''m still so sad that there aren''t any decent smoothies places in Boston. I''ll have to swing by the corner Starbucks and try it out.

Kay, lovely picture. I can''t wait to see more! I''m sorry to her the pregnancy is slowing you down. Just cause you don''t have any complications doesn''t mean you can''t complain.
2.gif
The aches and pains of pregnancy are no fun. During the day, I move myself out to the couch where our big screen TV and DVD player is and I already have a Netflix account. Plus I''m glad the Olympics is on for the next two weeks. Cilantro & chive yogurt dip from TJ''s - I''m on it! I love their pita chips - I''ve already been snacking on those with cheese. Thanks!

pave, good luck with your big u/s! I can''t wait to find out what you''re having! I think I''m a lazy person - I''d much rather sit on the couch and watch TV than go to the gym and I LOVE my sleep. However, who knew being lazy all the time could be so boring!? When you''re on bed rest it''s very different. You can''t do anything! No housework, cooking, etc. I am hanging in there though and I have hope that this won''t last too long. If there aren''t any changes at my next appointment, maybe I can sit up more often. For now, I have to be horizontal all the time. I''ve already registered and we''ve bought most of the baby stuff. Registering and shopping for baby stuff is fun. Enjoy it! Yay for feeling the baby move!

Blenheim, how fun in Vegas! I''m sorry you can''t get the deep tissue massage. If the body masque is safe, that sounds intriguing.

I tried the banana chocolate Vivanno smoothie and it was pretty good. Not that thick though. But I love chocolate covered bananas. YUM! I''m going to have to try to orange mango one too!

Blen, I''ve had two massages in my first trimester. I''ve been working with the same muscular therapist for the past 3 years, and she gave me a massage when I was 7 weeks along, and another one at 11 weeks. The first one felt like hardly anything at all, her touch was incredibly light and yet I felt so much better afterward. The second time she worked more on my legs and neck (she told me she''s avoiding the shoulders as much as possible), and she applied a little more pressure this time on my lower back. I do think that you should be careful about getting a massage, especially during the first trimester, though. I trust my therapist completely, and I know that she would have refused if she thought it would endanger the pregnancy. She does a lot of injury work, too, and is hardly the person you''d go to for a spa day (it feels like ''work'' for both her and me!).

I''m voting for a facial, especially having seen what super-hormones can do to my face! I find them to be just as relaxing as a massage, especially if it takes up a really long chunk of time. Mmmmm....

IG, interesting...I never was asked to have a full bladder for any of my ultrasounds, including the NT scan and amnio (where I had my big U/S on the same day). Go figure. I even asked too, and they said no.

Pavelover, don''t worry...you will be surprised how much of you will be in your child. I see it more and more everyday.

Erica, I''m not sure if/when massage during pregnancy is truly a bad idea but from what I''ve read you definitely need someone who has been trained in pregnancy massage and knows what pressure points to avoid, etc. Since the spa gave hubby a flat out "no" for first tri massage when he called, I''m assuming that they don''t feel like they''re adequately trained for that. And if they feel that way, I''m just going to switch my appointment to something else. I should have been more clear in my original post about it.

I just re-read the descriptions of the treatments, and the body masque is "loaded with vitamins A, E & B complex". Since too much vit A can cause birth defects and I''ve read some things saying to avoid skin ointments that contain it, facial it is.

I feel so much more limited than I thought I''d feel.

Oh Lordy, Blen,
20.gif
, I know what you mean. I feel like almost everything I do all day - what I eat, drink, how much and how I exercise, what I put on my skin, who I have dinner with (as in, no one with a bad cold), how much I rest, what jobs I apply for, what plans I make for visiting my family and for travel, my work pace, what I buy, how I pack, EVERYTHING is limited and affected by thinking about what is best for the Cubs and what might harm them.

I feel tremendously limited. Not to mention the pain ($*!@&@ bb's! today it was suddenly like they were being twisted with red hot pincers! agonizing! for like an hour!), the nausea, the acne... But it's all for a good cause.
17.gif

Get used to it. Bebe owns you now, for at least the next year.

Yes, we sacrifice a lot, before and after our child is born. But it''s all worth it!

Aww Blen! What about a Mani/Pedi?

Didn''t need a full bladder for the amnio.
Did have to drink 32 oz of water an hour before the big u/s scan though.
I recall MrsS not needing to have a full bladder for hers.
I think it depends on the equipment your dr has.

Blen, it''s too bad that the body masque is out, also! I had my first pedi last month and couldn''t believe I had deprived myself for so long. I really need to go in for a facial/pedi/brow wax soon, I''m starting to feel a bit rough around the edges.

Many massage places refuse to do first trimester massages, even with trained prenatal massage therapists, for liability reasons (concern over miscarriages, although the causal relationship has been disputed). I''m not surprised that the Vegas place refuses to do any type of massage, considering it''s probably your run-of-the-mill spa rather than a massage and bodywork therapy place. I figured that''s what you meant, I just wanted to put it out there for other people that some types of massages are possible, even in the first trimester
2.gif
. I''m just so glad that my therapist was willing and able to continue my treatment. I''m a ball of stress as it is, so my monthly massage is so important in offsetting chronic pain.

It certainly is a major drag sometimes! Our bodies have been given over to this all-consuming task. Just tonight we walked by our favorite Tunisian place and I sadly mentioned how I can''t have their fantastic Mediterranean soft-cheese platter. And my husband say, ''Just one time couldn''t hurt, could it?'' Oh, it''s soooo tempting, but I don''t know if I can do it. If we became sick, I would have a hard time living with myself.

Indy, I''m sorry to hear about the pain! I can''t believe I''m still nauseated at 12 weeks, although at the same time, things could be worse. Trying to look for the silver lining....
9.gif

Indy - I didn''t do a NT scan, so I don''t know if you need to have a full bladder. But I need a full bladder for my big u/s. The tech told me that they need a full bladder to do measurements on the cervix. Once she was done with the cervix, I could go pee before she do measurements on baby.

Pave - I am doing great so far. She''s been such a good baby since she doesn''t have a lot of wakeful period. She is feeding well, wakes up every 3 - 4 hrs for her feedings, then just goes back to sleep. Sometimes it takes a little while to get her back to sleep, but it''s not too bad.

Congrats on feeling the baby. I think feeling the baby was one of the best pregnancy moments.

Blenheim - Congratulations. How are you feeling? We went to Vegas when I was 9 weeks pregnant, and the spa told my sis (she was making the appt) that they don''t service anyone who is less than 15 weeks pregnant. I just don''t think they are trained to do or offered prenatal services, and they probably don''t want the liability in case something goes wrong with someone''s pregnancy.

erica - Hope you are feeling better. I think you are doing great with the exercises you are getting.

kay - yeah I lost 20lbs, but I have a yucky flab for a stomach. My parents were in town this weekend, and my mom said "oh you still have a belly."
39.gif
Geez it''s only been 2 weeks since I gave birth. hehe. Good thing I love her, otherwise I would be really offended.

Here''s one of M doing her poopy face.

M_poopyface.jpg

Erica On the soft cheeses thing...my doctor said it's only UNPASTEURIZED soft cheeses that are the issue. I am so glad I asked because I LOVE Chevre, Feta, etc. He said almost all cheeses these days in the US are pasteurized, so as long as it says pasteurized on the label you'd be all set. I asked at my favorite greek place and they brought out the label and sure enough it was pasteurized! So you might want to ask.

QT I don't think I ever mentioned but Meena is ADORABLE!!!!!! I love that face. So precious. Glad to hear that you are hanging in there so well!

Thanks, guys. I feel like I practically never indulge in any "bad" stuff when I''m not pregnant, so I didn''t think it would be that much of a change. When the woman at the spa told my dh that they won''t do 1st tri massages, she suggested a facial. So at least it seems like that''s okay.

I''ve finally felt up to getting off the couch this evening, but I''m still worried that maybe I feel this bad because I''m pregnant and not because of a cold. A cold I can shake by Vegas, but the pg''s not gonna go away for a while (knock on wood).

QT, thanks! Meena''s so cute.
30.gif

Erica, out of curiousity, I took the time to look at almost all of the soft cheese labels at Costco last week. Only one didn''t specify that it was made out of pasturized milk. Goat cheese is one of the few things that I''ve felt like eating this weekend, so I''ve been indulging in that quite a bit.

pave
thanks and i know she''ll kill me when she finds out about it when she''s older
41.gif

yay for feeling the baby! it''s one of the best thing i love about being preggo.
i never get tired of feeling the movements. enjoy them and they just get funner as the weeks progress.

sorry can''t help you with the registry.
i''m a minimalist and just get by with the bare necessities -- carseat, bed, diapers, clothes, and boobs
5.gif

regarding clothes, you''ll probably get a ton of newborn sizes. don''t wash all of them as baby tend to outgrow them pretty fast.
most vendors will let you exchange for bigger size or return if they are not washed.

QT
That poopy face of M is so cute.
She''s got alot of expression for a newborn!

And wow on your 20lb weight loss.
I bet you my belly is probably bigger than yours
41.gif
and i''m four months out already.

NF and Blen,, that''s good to know! For some reason my list of foods to avoid that was given by the hospital doesn''t mention the pasteurization bit. I''ll have to ask the restaurant, since I''m pretty sure they serve locally made cheese. I''m sure my husband is going to jump for joy because he''s pretty annoyed by all these ''restrictions.''

I guess that means I''m going to indulge in my favorite imported brie and gorgonzola from now on, as long as it''s pasteurized.

Still ''no'' on bagels and lox, though, I take it?
39.gif

Also, I just read ''no'' on gorging yourself daily on huge chunks of peanut butter. Apparently, if you eat it everyday, your kid has twice the asthma risk, though the study authors were careful to say "Don''t stop eating nuts! Nuts are great! Just don''t stuff yourself with them daily!"

Uhm. Yeah. Don''t gorge on ANY one thing daily. Except maybe milk.
3.gif

Still no lox.
39.gif

The pasteurization issue is a food poisoning issue, just like the raw meat and fish thingy.

No problem! I have noticed that the blanket papers the hospital issues seem to have been written in the early 1990''s...many of the restrictions have been revised since then, including the cheese thing. Yummy yummy. I was SO SO happy because since hubby is a vegetarian we eat a lot of soft cheeses sprinkled into everything.

Hi ladies! sorry I won''t be able to comment on indivdual posts--I''ve been so busy these past few weeks and have fallen behind on my post-reading!

This past weekend was very busy between house stuff, picking up the crib, DH moving it upstairs and setting it up,etc. I also had my shower on Saturday which was great except I got about 10 blankets, bibs and hooded towels! Looks like I have more shopping to do!

I''ll try to post a pic of the nursery later tonight (can''t from work), but have some questions for momies out there or preggos in waiting that are in the know:

*crib bumpers: I decided to get one from Pottery Barn Kids. Anyway, our crib is Babi Italia and it doesn''t seem that the bumper fits even though i thought all cribs were standard size? It seems too long and there is overlap of a of couple squares. Am I doing something wrong?

*Ultimate crib sheet: how necessary is this? I purchased it, but wondering if I can live without it? Like if I added a smaller "sheet saver" for just the spot the baby sleeps in?

*wet wipe warmer: I received one as a gift, but returned it since so many people said it''s a waste (and there are so many things I do absolutely need)--anyone disagree?

*NB diapers--how many to get me through the first week or 2? (since i know the baby will outgrow these fast)

Sorry for more questions than updates, but I''m starting to go into serious nesting mode, and can''t believe only 7 more weeks to go! :)
I''ll catch up on my reading now

Hey everyone! I'm back from vacation. This thread was so active when I was gone so I just want to do a couple shout outs: snlee, Jas, LIA, gald to hear that the babies are still hanging in there and you three are getting good medical care! I can't believe so many of us had PTL (isn't that a funny acronym!? Wasn't that the name of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakers religious group?)!!

erika nice looking u/s! Mine is on Friday and I am really excited and nervous. As long as our results are clear (and there is really a baby in there
20.gif
) we will be going public, so that is nerve wracking! I hear you on the ambivalence too... I think it is common and some women feel it more than others. One thing I think is really important is not to over-think those types of doubts too much and not to beat yourself up for feeling that way. Some women, one of my close friends included, can really be hard on themselves, and that pressure makes the ambivalence worse I think and can also be a major predictor of PPD. So let the feelings flow and also don't be afraid to let yourself feel good an excited sometimes too! If you tend to be more pessimistic, you may feel the tendendy to squash your happy feelings, but letting yourself feel those is just as important as letting yourself feel the ambivalent feelings too.

As for me, my mom bought me lots of nice maternity pants and skirts when I was visiting, so that was great. I officially cannot wear any of my jeans AT ALL and have outgrown most of my skirts too. Sighh... some of that is overindulgence in carbs to quell the nausea, but I think the rest is baby bump.... I think I kind of "popped" this week. And no, I will not post belly picture yet. My belly is not pretty yet and I still just look fat, but as soon as I am showing properly I will snap some pics!

On the lighter side, my nausea completely disappeared over the course of last week, so I feel pretty good! I guess that offsets the ridiculous weight gain... sort of
20.gif
! Now that I am feeling better I have to get some work done. I have a manuscript that I got a "revise and resubmit" on, so I have to... um... revise and resubmit it. Plus I have another manuscript that is about ready to go in, plus I am teaching a course this fall and I need to get cracking on lecture prep. I basically took the last month off, so I guess this serves me right.

11 weeks 2 days

Happy Monday, friends! I cannot believe how beautiful it is outside...I feel like the kid in the Secret Garden who just looks out the window while the rest of the world is enjoying nature.

Then again, I freckle so easily.

Still pregnant; the babies are nearing six pounds each (give or take) and I''m officially 34 weeks and 1 day. I am so thrilled, although I am ready to be done with the whole pregnancy thing. I''m filling out forms for the double bris we will eventually have. Remind me to get a mask to put over my eyes, cuz that ain''t gonna be pretty.

Hooray for shooting pains down my butt and thighs! I am a sexy, sexy mama.

Would you believe DH is still talking very seriously about having more kids. Part of it is stemming from my COBRA insurance running out in December, part of it from who knows what. The man paints one nursery and all of a sudden he''s an Osmond.

I don''t know if I''ve mentioned this, but DH stabbed himself with a butter knife the other day. Did some good damage, too. He was separating frozen turkey burgers with the knife and it went straight into his hand (not deeply). No need for stiches, but I''m thinking he needs a little more TLC, considering how much he''s nursing that thing and letting me know how much it hurts. That and he has a tummy ache.
21.gif
Because I''m a big meanie, it''s really hard for me not to roll my eyes, but I''m being a nice person for once. Methinks once he sees me push two human beings out my hooha that he''ll not be so quick with the griping. He''s trying very hard to take care of me...

All''s quiet on the in-law front for now, but we all know that will change. Thanks to all for the support...it would be easier if DH wasn''t so scarred by them as a child...the subtle emotional manipulation by people who the world sees as wonderful, generous, lovely, kind, etc. is tough. Big lesson -- money does not equate with class.

Let''s see what''s been going on with all of you...

Snlee -- how''s the bedrest going? I think we can start a lock-down club. Bwah. Thanks for the in-law support. I do have the most interesting family.
Indy -- I found it was just easier to gain weight through eating a little more than I normally do...and adding ice cream to my diet. Since I''ve had a baby on my tummy for practically the whole time, I haven''t been hungry AT ALL. It''s easier to eat another helping of salad or another slice of cheese or a little more chicken (I know you''re not a big meat fan) than it is to scarf down something more caloric and/or high carb. However, small meals every 2-3 hours has worked for me. I am all belly...no weight gain anywhere else. And as far as nuts, yeah, a handful a couple of times a week is ok...those allergies are just rampant now with kids and quite scary. I am so sorry about your mom''s wig. I would call around and find a salon that will cut/style it for her. If she''s uncomfortable, they could take her "off hours". BTW -- I think the dr. would have told you if you needed to drink. For my 13 week NF test, I did not have to drink anything; they were able to see what they needed at that point.
Erica -- Great minds think alike. I''ve already started the "We''re cashing in on all offers of help after the babies are born" stuff. We''ll see how that goes! I love how your DH spoke with the babies. He''s earned a brownie there. Or brownie points. Whatever.
Miranda -- LOL -- If I stick my fingers anywhere near my ILs, I may not get them back. Or worse, someone will comment on my lack of manicure. (I so do not have good nails for that...even if I paint them and do nothing for two hours, they smudge, despite quick dry stuff.) I''m pretty good about saying what I want/need, I just am not good with DH saying he wants me to be as close to his family as I am to mine. Oy.
Tiffany -- Again, lol...the irony is that once the babies are born, we fully expect my inlaws to be MIA. We''ll see!
Neatfreak -- Whoo hoo on the twin GTG! I think our babies are in the same positions. I cannot wait for the 22nd (for you!)
Stry -- seriously, I''ve needed that shirt since I was 13 weeks! Awesomeness!
LIA -- how are you feeling today? I''m so sorry about all you''ve been through the last few days.
Blen -- is your throat any better? Like NF, I also was dripping like a faucet for a few weeks 1st trimester. The things that pregnancy does to a body! I recommend a mani-pedi (just tell them not to massage the ankle area...that can cause contractions)
Kay -- love the pictures. Keep enjoying!
Pave -- hey girl! I am so sorry about your furbaby situation(s). Yuck and more yuck. Yea for kicks! That is the greatest part of pregnancy!!!! Can you post some pics of the nursery right now so we can give more helpful suggestions?
QT -- Lil'' poopy face is a great picture! She''s got the most amazing eyes...like she''s an old soul. Gorgeous!!!!!
Dreamer -- hooray for M/S abatement! I hope the writing/revising goes well today!

I''m off like a herd of turtles.

you know, i ate a lot of peanut butter through all my pregnancies and non of my kids have asthma or any nut allergies. I used to eat those cliff bars every day for breakfast which is made with nuts too. We do hear a lot about nut allergies and I even asked my dr. if I should stop eating nuts/peanut butter while nursing because of some recent studies and she said she personally didn''t feel there was enough info/evidence to call for a nut fast. we were planning on going to Five guys burgers for lunch that same day and there are a ton of peanuts in boxes around the restaurant and I was worried that maybe I shouldn''t even take Jake in. She said as long as we didn''t rub him with peanut oil he should be fine so we went and enjoyed some excellent burgers and fries. anyway, I like the last line, don''t stop eating them, just don''t go overboard.

Happy Monday all!

Not much new here but I'm 30 weeks today! YAY! I can't believe the baby will be here in 2 months!

I've been staying up till past midnight every night watching the Olympics and I slept in till 10:30 this morning. I got a good 9 hours of sleep. Not waking up early to go to work is one thing I'm thankful for.

It's nice out and I can't go out and play. Wah. Being in the lock-down club is no fun. Jas, you don't have much longer!

I have been an emotional wreck lately. I feel like crying all of the time - happy or sad tears - my emotions are all over the place!

Massaging the ankle area can cause contractions? Who knew! You learn something new everyday!

QT, Meena is so expressive for a newborn! How cute!
janine, I'm glad you had a great baby shower! I would buy a box of 100 or so NB diapers. Size 1 is for 8 to 14 pounds so if your baby is close or above 8 pounds, you won't need many NB diapers.
dreamer, welcome back! Glad your m/s has gone away.
jas, if my baby gains half a pound a week, at 34 weeks he'll be about 5.5 pounds. TWO 6 pounds babies at 34 weeks? You're amazing! Hooray - bed rest is paying off! I've been wondering if bed rest produces bigger babies since more nutrients are going to the baby when you lay on your left side. I dont want a 9 pound baby!
4.gif

Have a great week all!

30 weeks!

SNLee, glad to see you''re seeing the sliver of a bright side to bed rest. And don''t worry! Twins, statistically, have their growth spurt much earlier and then level out, whereas singletons put on lots of weight right at the end, so it''s quite normal that Jas''s twinkies are measuring big for the week! She has obviously been doing something right though, since those are pretty much ideal nice healthy weights for twins. So she''s now my idol and roll model.

Aw shucks. Now I feel guilty for smoking crack.

I keed, I keed.

Aha, Jas, I knew there had to be a secret to it. Busted! Crack huh? I was about to wonder where I could get me some, but I don''t think it should be too hard around here.

Guess I''m glad I''m moving after all.
