Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

I remember the doctor explaining the tests for down syndrome and explaining that we didn''t have to do it as there''s nothing that can be done if they found something. But I signed up for it anyway. I don''t remember why. I think I just looked over at Mr. Fiery and he did one of those ''sure why not'' shrugs so I said ok.

Thanks for the note on the photos!

I''ll just put a plug in here for why *not* just so you can make an informed decision...basically if you know that you won''t terminate the pregnancy if something is wrong (i.e., nothing would change about the pregnancy for you) and you get the tests done and they find a result that isn''t great, you then might unnecessarily worry for months and months. As this is just a screener test, NOT a diagnostic tool, even if they "find something" it very well might be nothing.

So just something to keep in mind in case you get bad results and/or decide to rethink. If you are a crazy worrier by nature sometimes it''s best not to have additional information. At least for me it was!

You might also want to make sure that it''s covered by insurance. Since it''s an optional screening, it might not be.

Excellent point Robbie, a lot of insurance companies don''t cover it.

Well, dh is already annoyed with me! Sigh. I called to schedule my first appointment, and the scheduler told me that they do 2, one with a nurse to take family history and get bloodwork for any tests, and one with a doctor or nurse practitioner to do an exam and pap if I am due for one. Well, of course this place is ridiculously busy, and the nurse''s hours were not great, and I didn''t want to have to take a full day off of work for this, so my 2 options were Dec. 17th, or Dec. 23rd if I wanted an afternoon appt. Well, the 23rd doesn''t work because we are driving home that day, so I picked the 17th even though dh has an interview in Philly that day. I figured he really didn''t need to be here for it, but now he''s upset that he won''t be at my first appointment.

He also told me (since he works at the med. center) that unless we get the nt scan, I won''t get an u/s until 20 weeks. Boo. But I guess that is understandable.

Now that I''m thinking about it, I might cancel it because I am someone that worries A LOT.

The insurance is covering it. They actually contacted the insurance first to verify and then set up the appointment. I may cancel since its not necessary.

It is certainly a personal decision, but worth thinking about if you are a worrier like me! Especially if your risks are low and you know you wouldn't terminate if it came back poorly. That's the real "value added" IMO about this scan is the ability to make the decision to terminate. So if you know you wouldn't then it doesn't add much value except to see the baby! Which certainly is great if you can avoid the worry aspect or you get good screener results.

P.S. What do they do during the NT scan? I had someone call and schedule an appointment. I read online it checks for Down Syndrome but wondering if its an u/s?? Oh and getting a call one day after my drs appointment that just says 'hi you need to call back to schedule an appointment with a specialist' made my heart race.
For mine I had a full set of bloods taken, then I waited half an hour to make sure the blood test results were ready. Then we had a u/s done.

They take a lot of measurements at the back of the baby's neck to measure the nuchal translucency. They also check for a nasal bone and look at the heart, the major blood vessels, main organs and the blood flow in the umbilical cord.

It took about 30 minutes and we got to see the baby really well.

Finally the sonographer analysed the results from the blood test combined with the NT scan results and my age and then gave me my risk ratio. Some places I think you have to wait a while for the results, my hospital you get them on the spot.

Although DH and I would also terminate for Downs, there are other trisomies that they check for too - 13 & 18. Whatever one may feel about the ethics of knowingly bringing a child with Downs into the world, I for one could not put any foetus or baby through either of those other terrible syndromes - in the same way I wouldn't choose to maintain a pregnancy where there were other drastic and terminal physical deformities.

For that reason I am having all the screening tests. If my numbers hadn't been so good at the NT, I would have had CVS without any hesitation. I'm having several anomaly scans at 20 weeks due to my meds, and if anything untoward turns up then I will have extra investigations for it.

I don't want to scare you at all over this, or say that there is a right or wrong way to look at this, but it is worth knowing what some of these less well-known anomalies really mean in practice.

Delurking just to say... that even among the would-not-terminate-ever crowd, there are two minds on this. The other is exemplified by Sarah Palin on why she had the early testing for Trig given her beliefs: "I like to be prepared." (Can''t believe I''m quoting her!) Or the idea that the child''s birthday should be a joyous event, and knowing their medical condition prior makes that more possible by giving the parents time to deal before they meet their little one.

Also, there are rare occasions when there would be a difference in medical treatment related to test results. Food for thought.

Happy belly-growing, preggers psers! And pace yourselves on eating turkey for two (or three!), for those of you celebrating American Thanksgiving in a few days.

i agree ...my thoughts exactly. but everyone has their own ethical views on it and thats why it should be discussed with dh and doctor and then decided on. i am a worrier beyond belief and i had it done.

True, but as it was explained to me any major abnormalities that would change treatment would be caught on the 20 week scan and wouldn''t need to be dealt with until then anyway? I don''t know any examples of things they could/would treat before then but I''m not a doctor, so I certainly don''t know everything!

Non-preggo here jumping in with a quick question:

Can you take antibiotics if you are preggo? What about if you don''t know yet/too early to tell?

Cheering you all on from afar!

Neatfreak, good luck with the boys!

Thanks China! You know, that is a good question. I know that some antibiotics are fine, as if you have a UTI or other small infection while preggo they will prescribe them for you. But I don''t know if ALL of them are fine or if they are in the same doses, etc. So I would clear it with your pharmacist or doctor first personally.

Some are fine:

Penicillins, Amoxicillins and Cephalosporins are regarded as generally safe - as are Keflex and Ceclor.

Ones to avoid are:

Tetracyclines (they will discolour the babies teeth - I am proof of what tetracycline does to teeth. I was brought up during a cholera epidemic and my parents HAD to give us tetracycline for extended amounts of time. As a result my sister and I have yellowed teeth. In the foetus, it can affect the milk teeth as they are forming)
Doxycycline
Bactrim

I was prescribed a Cephalosporin for a UTI by my OB at 12 weeks.

You also need to be extra careful to complete the course.

Wow, thanks Neat and Pandora. Always amazed at the wealth of info on PS!

Would definitely check with doctor/pharmacist, just curious.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I had a bit of a paranoid scare yesterday. We were driving home to Pittsburgh, and I was having some really bad cramps. I couldn''t tell if it was just a mix of indigestion and gas, or if it was more like "getting AFF" cramps. So then I was all hyper sensative and I really had myself and dh convinced that I was having a m/c. Luckily, everything was fine, but it really freaked both of us out.

I was just saying the other day how I don''t really feel bloated, but maybe these gassy cramps are my own way of bloating. Those of you who have been through the bloat, did you get stomach cramps along with it?

Hope everyone is having a safe and wonderful holiday!

Yes, yes and thrice yes! I''m still getting them. They hurt as well!

I''ve found that grazing is better than eating big meals - a normal sized meal now makes me need to go and lie down to recover.

Hi everyone! I am a huge lurker on pricescope, but wanted to jump in because I am over the moon this week as I just found out we are having a boy! I have a 3 year old daughter which is why I''m so excited. DH has 3 sisters, 6 girl cousins, 1 niece, and a male has not been born into the family (immediate and extended) in 17 years! So I felt we hit the lotto on this one. Thanks for letting me share. :)

Sabine, when I was about 8 weeks, in the car on our way to MIL''s to tell the whole family we were pregnant, I started getting HUGE gas pains. It really felt like strong gas pains I got when I went into labor the first time. Truly thought I was miscarrying. But when I got to MIL''s house, I went to the bathroom and had ***TMI ALERT*** major diarrhea and went about 3 more times that day. I was never more relieved in my life to have diarrhea. It happened twice since then, but only in the first trimester, not the second.

Happy pregnancy and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

21 weeks today.

I had gas, cramps, diarrhea, you name it I had it. It''s totally normal hon. I agree with Pandora though, grazing is MUCH better for the tummy at this point than big meals. It''ll really help to slow down your eating.

Happy Thanksgiving all!!!

Yesterday was an interesting day around here...went to the Doc, had an NST scan (the doc said the boys looked "textbook perfect" which made me happy!), then got my BP taken and it was high for me (which is still low for most people), but they were a tad concerned because I also have gotten pretty puffy the past few days and I haven't had any swelling at all this pregnancy so far.

So I got to have my blood drawn, did 2 urines, and am now doing a 24 hour urine catch. How fun. The good news is that they found no protein in my samples from yesterday and my blood all was clean too, so it likely isn't pre-e. But now I get to go to the lab AGAIN today, the nurse for a BP check tomorrow, and then to see my doc again on Monday. What a fun way to end a holiday weekend! My cervix is also holding, no change from last week. I'm relieved though that all seems to be fine, I had to have the talk with my doc about delivering the babies this weekend in case my results came back bad! That was a reality check for sure.

On the plus side I might have bought something sparkly this week as a pre-push/surgery present! It should arrive tomorrow, so I am trying to convince UPS to hold it for me so I can go pick it up in the AM instead of waiting for the delivery truck at 5pm when they usually come. It's an antique/vintage eternity band, and it was an ebay buy, so I am SO hoping it is as represented, because if so it was such a steal and it's gorgeous!

Also going to have coffee with my friend who is due with twins the same day as me tomorrow, so that should be fun assuming neither of us goes into labor! She's really great, so I am very excited (we met through the moms of multiples group here).

Anyway 34 w 5d and holding for now!

Sabine- ditto everyone but my gas and stomach pains happened in the top half of my stomach not lower (which calmed me down) so I knew it was just stomach pains.

Mama- congrats! Boys are a rarer find lol so enjoy the excitment!

Neat- soooo happy u r hanging in there and letting them bake as much as possible...ugh what a relief that everything is going according to schedule..and yay on the bling..I love all things that sparkle..please post a pic ;)

Happy Thanksgiving all!
There are quite a lot of pics here. I still need to sort out the pro-pics...

The sleeves were the hardest part of my dress - keeping the very tight straight look was a challenge, as was getting into it. The day of the wedding was pretty hot for the UK and I was super-stressed (the hour before the ceremony was hell on earth quite literally!). My arms swelled up and my brother had to get ice-cubes and this stuff you use to get into rubber outfits (he and his FI are into fetish in a big way) to get me into it! Talk about panic!!
9.gif

He also laced me into the corset - a godsend as I''d been laced into it 3 times before by other people and could barely breathe. With his expert technique it was so comfortable I wore it for 12 hours quite happily.

Hope the pics help!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

NYC: You really will probably want to avoid such tight sleeves while you are preggo. There is a decent chance you''ll gain weight or swell in your arms and won''t be able to fit into it or be comfortable...just something to think about. As I have learned this week swelling can happen in any or all of your extremities and it can come on fast!

Thanks for the pics..you looked soooo beautiful..like a princess..gorgeous! But I didn''t realize the sleeves were tight and fitted...that''s definitley not an option for me unfortunatley. My dress is going to be flowy like a grecian or empire style..and not corsets for me :) lol...so back to square one with the sleeves.
Thanks again!

OH Neat I'm so excited (slash scared) for you! IT's SO SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fingers crossed that your tests come back ok and you can hang on a wee bit longer, but I must say, you've been a trooper till now. Good for you!
36.gif

Pandora - beautiful pics!! now I have a face to put to your name
9.gif
. You looked so regal. Gorgeous.

Sabine - hang in there girlie. I'm glad you had a false alarm there. phew. You're body is going to do some cra-zy things over the next few weeks. Buckle up! lol.

I'm boring. Nothing new to report other than I got a suitable winter jacket for the Canadian Winter:

I would get bright pink. LOL. In a sea of black and beige...I dared to be different
11.gif

The zipper un-does from the bottom as well, so IF I get huge, then I can just unzip it to the belly.

oh, and I got weighed today. Since my last weigh in 3 weeks ago, I've LOST one pound!!! LOL. I have no idea how. oink oink.

Mela 15 weeks tomorrow.

MelasBrandNewDigs.jpg

If you want long sleeves and a Grecian look, can I suggest using a floaty material and instead of closing the upper seam, just catch it with a fastening at the shoulder, the elbow and wrist and at the midpoints between the shoulder/elbow and elbow/wrist.

It looks really pretty, is cool and won''t be a problem if your weight alters or you swell up.

Neat - here''s hoping that everything is okay and things keep going well.

Hey Mela, the jacket sounds great - especially with your colouring. Are you Italian by any chance?

Trust me, I look anything but regal right now - snoopy pyjamas don''t really cut it.
1.gif

They don''t weigh us over here on the whole (only for the NT scan), but they''ve kept an eye on mine because of the bad m/s. I started out at 63.5kg and I''m now 66.4kg so I''ve gained about 7 pounds which is about right I think for 15 weeks. I should gain another 6/7 pounds in the next 3 weeks according to my book so I guess I won''t fit any of my pre-pg clothes after that.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the US - we don''t have that here, but I will think of all of you and your turkeys! (We have turkey at Xmas instead).

Hey everyone, I am back! Nothing new to report on the pregnancy front except that I think I am almost into the third trimester?? When does that start anyways, I have read conflicting reports... some say the 27th week is the third tri, some say the 28th week... Anyways, my midwife appointments switch to every two weeks soon, and man alive if that doesn't remind you that the end is near I don't know what does!

In other news, which my fellow academic Neatfreak at least will appreciate, I found out on friday that I have a job interview at the top university in Canada! They had 100 applicants, which is crazy (50 to 80 is more typical) and I made the cut to the final 2 or 3. The interview is a 2 day extravaganza, with a 1 hour talk and umpteen gazillion meetings. Thankfully, my stamina is still good. This was the first job deadline to come and also the most competitive of the jobs I applied for, so I am feeling positive that I will get another couple of interviews this year. Cross your fingers ladies, I would like to be done with the job market and have a position secured before the baby is born!

I also found out that another manuscript is probably accepted (small revisions only) and that too is great news!

Anyhoo, everything is trucking along. Baby is getting stronger and kicking a lot, and sleeping is getting a little more uncomfortable, but all in all I cannot complain, I have been having a very easy pregnancy.

YAY DREAMER!!! That rocks honey. I am so so happy for you! I''m trying to get a journal review and an article out as we speak too...gotta clear my plate before the babies.

Please let us know when the interview extravaganza is so we can send lots of dust!!!!

AWwwwwwwwwwwwww DREAMER that is so so so great. Congrats on making it to the "finals"! Which University is it? (I am a Western Alum)
3.gif

I really hope that you secure a position too. What a load off that would be. At least you''re still in the running (towards being americas next top model). I just wanted to say that.
12.gif

Pandora - I am 100% Italian! Both parents were born there, and I have the dark hair, dark eyes, olive skin thing going on. The funny thing about my bright pink jacket is that it brings a smile to EVERYONE''s face that sees it. It was the clincher for me. What could possibly be "cuter" than a pregnant lady in a hot pink winter jacket???
10.gif
Hilarious.

So, let me poll my brilliant girls here. DH and I are looking to go away for 2 weeks over Christmas/ New Years to somewhere HOT (Carribean styles) that is clean, safe and not tooooooooooooooooooooooooooo expensive.

Any ideas?

Ps. the background was that we had booked, reserved a two week treck in Italy to visity family and friends, but I just don''t feel up-to-it, and would much prefer to just loaf on a beach in the sun.
emhot.gif

Pandora- thanx for the tips..the material will be loose light and flowy..the top part will be embroidered and nice and the bottom just loose and pleated..I wil have a picture drawn when I go..can''t wait..but I will have a problem with shoes tho..I need flats but with a little bit of platform..ugh too much work for me lol.
