Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

Can I join this group?? Hubby and I just found out we are expecting our second child--DD just turned three. We are so excited, as this was a planned pregnancy. I am just 7 weeks, so we are not telling family yet. I want to be able to talk about it with someone, so I thought about the wonderful Pricescope community! I work in a NICU, so it is hard to be around all the sweet babies and not explode with my news. Anyway, My due date will be July 20th--are there any newly preggers out there due around the same time??

Welcome! Of course you can join. Sabine and Robbie are both July EDD's if I remember correctly.

Hopefully I won't have to pick your brain, but I am warning you that I might! I am 35 weeks with twins, so there's the potential for a bit of NICU time with us...really hoping not though! I hope none of us ever have to avail you of information about your job.

Hi!

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! Baby and I ate a ton of food and I loved every bite of it.

This weekend was my bf’s bachelorette party. I was able to pull off not drinking all night. I just told the bartenders who would bring me a juice in the color of whatever shot the girls were having (i.e. a shot of lemonade when they asked for lemon drops). I wish I could say I had fun but I didn’t. The bride got trashed. There was falling (twice), kissing random guys which I would immediately put an end to, and inappropriate touching from guys taking advantage that again I would run out and stop. Basically, I was on mommy duty all night. There was a guy that I ended up arguing with and security kicked him out because he felt it was appropriate to grab her in her "private area" so that she can dance with him. At that point I said its time to go and I had to hold her while walking up to the room otherwise she would bump into walls. When we did get to the room, she wouldn’t stop talking until about 3:30 and would wake me up if she saw me sleeping.

She had fun and I''m glad its over LOL.

Neat - that diaper cake was pretty impresive!! Too bad it was a PITA.

Pandora - love your baby stuffs! I like the Bee too (and I LOVE the yellow - you should go for it
31.gif
), but we''re looking for something that we can go ''off roading'' with in High Park (kinda like Toronto''s smaller version of Central Park). We live 9 houses away. I looked into the co-sleeper cribs here, but a lot of stores don''t sell them because (apparently) there are some risks?! Something about the baby falling in between the crib and the bed. I dunno. Have you heard any such stories?

I have some red ITCHY ITCHY ITCHY bumps starting on the side of my body. Sigh. Can I not escape ONE side-effect of pregnancy??? I have to show my middie, but I''m really hoping this is not the start of those terrible itchy pregnancies you hear about. I have been very itchy for about 2 weeks now, but the bumps just started yesterday.

On the bright side, I haven''t had any spotting in 3 days!!!!!!!!

My only ''must have'' features for a stroller (I love that word - they call them prams or pushchairs here) are: Lightweight, birth to 2/3 years, forward and rear facing, narrow width, extendable handle, easy to fold/clean, decent amount of space underneath for bags, takes a carseat etc.

I need one that I can get on/off buses and the Tube easily, works well on cobbles, paving and city parks, that can fit in shop doorways and aisles and that won''t kill my back too much if I need to carry it at all.

We also have a tiny house, so the amount of space it takes up is important - also why I''d like as many features in one item as possible (as long as they are useful - I don''t need EVERY accessory going).

I''ve been reading so many reviews and I am SHOCKED at how many people seem to have 3 or 4 different strollers (one woman had gone through 11 in 11 months
23.gif
). I mean, these things are expensive. It sounds very bad to say this, but judging by the standard of spelling/grammar in a lot of the posts, I didn''t get the feeling that these were people with the sort of jobs that would allow you to buy an $800 stroller every other month or so. Guess that''s why we''re all in the financial mess the world is in right now...

On the co-sleeper cribs, the really important thing is not to have a gap between your bed and the crib - this can mean that you need to get a custom sized mattress for the crib to make sure that they sit flush. A lot of the cots also rely on brakes on the castors to keep them next to your bed. Personally I wouldn''t trust that. DH and I are going to look at temporary ways of fixing the crib to the bedside so it can''t move.

Sorry to hear about the itch - I believe you can get things to help with it. If your palms start to itch call your OB as soon as possible though.

Welcome, Kelley! Fiery and I are due in July and Sabine''s actually due at the beginning of August, so the 4 of us are within a month of each other!

Wow, I missed a lot while DH and I were visiting family for Thanksgiving! I don''t think I have the time to go back and closely read everything, so I''ll try to hit what seems to have been the major things (sorry if I miss anything!)

Fiery, yay for getting through the b party! Hopefully keeping the pregnancy a secret should be a bit easier and less stressful from hear on out.

DD, congrats on making it to 3rd tri!

Mela, sorry about the rash! I hope it goes away soon. Yay for no more spotting!

Neat, I never thought about how much of a pain it must be to take a diaper cake apart!

NYC, happy belated bday! Sorry the twin comments are getting to you.

Pandora, I''m so sorry that your employer''s adding more stress.

Blen, I''ll keep my fingers crossed that the shadow means nothing.

As for me, DH and I had a great Thanksgiving with my Aunt, Uncle and cousins in NY. My mom, dad and sister stayed in Pittsburgh, but we see them so often since we live less than 5 minutes away that I didn''t feel bad about not spending the holiday with them. We haven''t seen my NY relatives since our wedding last September. Keeping the secret around my family was easy. None of them really drink, so I was never even offered anything that I had to refuse. We did go out for Japanese food, but I just ordered a box meal and made sure my roll was an avocado one. It was pretty hard to turn down lox (smoked salmon) at the day after thanksgiving brunch because I LOVE them and DH hates them so we never have them except when we go to visit my family for a special occasion, but there were so many other foods that I wanted to eat that I didn''t feel like I was missing too much. No one made any baby comments, probably due to the fact that in the last 3 years or so 4 of us have gotten married and I''m the youngest of the bunch by about 4 years, so they probably expect the others to have babies first. My great uncle did say that we needed to give him another reason to come out and visit (our wedding and my sister''s bat mitzvah were both in Pittsburgh in 2007) and I was tempted to tell him, but I''m glad I stuck to the original plan. This is going to be the first baby of its generation on my side. My grandfather was kind of everyone''s favorite in the family. He was the one who held everyone together and sadly since he passed away 9 years ago, some of his siblings are no longer on speaking terms. I''m probably going to end up being disappointed, but I''m kind of hoping that the baby will get everyone to come together and get along, at least once more. My great aunts and uncles are getting pretty old, the youngest is in his 80''s, and the last few events there have been major blow ups between at least 2 of them. I think the best they''ve done in the recent past is just to ignore each other.
38.gif
I plan to bring the baby to NY to meet everyone while I''m on maternity leave and I''m sure that we''ll have some type of a get together when I''m there.

I''m starting to get a bit nervous about telling all of DH''s family on Christmas Eve. It sounded so far away when we were planning it, but now it''s in just 23 days! Holy crap!

I have my second appointment today. I feel like it kind of snuck up on me. I was so excited for the first appointment, but not so much for this one. Hopefully we''ll be able to hear the hb on the doppler, but it''s still early, so I''m not holding my breath. Other than that, I''m guessing it''s just going to be a PIAC, bp check, weight check, see ya later kind of appointment.

DH and I both took the day off from work to recover from the drive home. Thank goodness. Our 7 hour drive took 9 hours because of traffic. We only stopped twice. Once for lunch and to get gas and once to go to the bathroom. Each stop ended up being about an hour though because of how many people there were. I''m currently using my day off to do laundry while DH paints our bedroom. Yay to not being allowed to inhale paint fumes!

Welcome Kelley!

Robbie - good for you on not telling! Doing things on your own terms feels so good, non? What colour are you painting your room?

Fiery - Good for you too on keeping it a secret this weekend (and baby sitting
11.gif
) - you girls are STARS!

I didn''t take pics of the baby shower I threw, but just got two pics. Here is one of the guests, the ballons and munchies in the living room (pink and light green mini-eggs, sour soothers, and animal crackers - all baby themed!! and also various crudité):

melaShower1.jpg

oh these are low res. boo.

oh well, here is the table of food. See the eggs sitting along the back of the table? I made those as a take-home for each guest. so cute.

I also made the hot pink Carnation balls
1.gif
. They were the "prizes" for the games.

melaShower2.jpg

Thank you for the warm welcome! It will be fun to follow everyone''s progress and I am glad there are a few of us around the same due date!

Neatfreak Hopefully your babes will stay in long enough to skip the NICU stay--35+ weeks is great for twins--but I would be happy to have my brain picked if you think of any questions! In addition to NICU nursing I also do post-partum nursing, so I can answer questions about that too=)

I am having a hard time not telling my family--over Thanksgiving someone made a comment about how much I was eating and I wanted to say "Hey! I AM eating for two, you know!" I think we will wait until New Years eve, though, as my first appointment is on Dec. 30th (11 weeks). Our family tradition is to go out for Chinese on New Years eve, so I think I will order some custom fortune cookies with the announcement as the fortune. I think that would be fun! Although I don''t know if my belly will cooperate--I already look like I did when I was 16 weeks pregnant with my daughter, and I am only 7 weeks today!

ooh Kelley - the fortune cookie idea is GREAT!!
36.gif

Hopefully your belly will co-operate but you can always opt for loose dresses and tops to cover you up.

Surprises are AWESOME!!!!!!

Welcome, Kelley. I am due the end of July too. It sounds like everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I have been sick basically all day long for the past 4 days. I''m in trouble if this "morning" sickness thing lasts too long. It doesn''t seem to matter if I eat or don''t eat. I was so happy when we first found out, but now I''m so ill I''m just wondering what I got myself into. I wish I knew when I''d feel better again.

When did everyone''s morning sickness subside?

Robbie, I''m so impressed that you didn''t tell anyone. It must be tough. I think the ultrasounds in picture frames is a great idea. My in-laws really wanted us to announce our pregnancy at our Thanksgiving get together, but there were 5 people there I was meeting for the first time and only 3 other people there besides us and the in-laws. At least they are excited about being grandparents.

5w6d

hey everyone! Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. We finally told all of our family over the holiday. Everyone is super excited since it''s the first grandchild on my side. After the NT scan next week I''ll finally tell work. I cannot believe I''m almost out of the 1st trimester! I''ll be 12 weeks thursday! It went pretty fast.

All this talk of strollers has me so confused! I thought we were pretty set on the Bee, but I''m worried it''s going to be a hassle to set up the ''kit'' so that it can be used as a snap n'' go. So I don''t know yet. Plus I haven''t seen it in person (well except in the mall).

Sabine - just a warning about names...don''t tell anyone!!! My mom is driving me THRU THE ROOF! I suggested one name we were thinking about and now she''s convinced herself that''s the name we''re using
20.gif
I don''t even like it anymore because she''s bothering me so much about it. Or you''ll get the flip side (which I''ve gotten too), someone will ask what we are thinking, you tell them and then they respond with "oh I don''t like that!"...well good for u! It''s not your kid
9.gif
I''ve found the name thing very annoying and I''m only 11 1/2 weeks!

Kelley - welcome and congrats!!

Blue - so sorry you''re not feeling well
15.gif
My m/s lasted from 5 weeks until 15weeks exactly. I have not been nausious since last Friday!!!
36.gif

Sabine - about the names. We''re going with untraditional names...so I can relate. I have a stock answer which is "well, since we''re not finding out the sex, we won''t know until we meet the baby at the birth". That tends to shut the convo down. If they press, I usually turn the conversation around to "why don''t you help us...we''re taking suggestions!
3.gif
" which people love.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I have TONS of names I love and a few we''re really really really keen on. Not that the public need know
2.gif

10 weeks worth Mela! That would mean I''d start to feel better in February. Geesh, how did you ever survive? I''m so glad you started feeling better on Friday.

Hi everyone...hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

I haven''t had a chance to catch up on everyone''s posts yet, but I just have a quick question.

Does anyone else hurt when they sneeze? If I''m laying on my back and sneeze, my stomach hurts very bad.

Hi BlueKeet,

You have my sympathy. My m/s kicked in at the 6 week mark and it''s still going strong now (I''m 16 weeks tomorrow).

I felt so ill I told my GP and DH that I had made a huge mistake with thinking this whole baby idea was a good one. I am definitely not thinking of having a second till the first one is at least 5 years old. I have honestly never felt so terrible in my life (and that includes having spent a year with my liver going into failure - which makes you feel dreadful).

Please go and see your doctor and get some meds for it. There are safe ones out there, and severe m/s can be very dangerous. I nearly ended up in hospital because of it.

I take a med called Promethazine which is very effective, although it really knocks you out. I was on 25mg, but changed to 10mg as I could barely keep my eyes open otherwise.

They have other ones in the USA - your doctors will know.

Seriously they are a lifesaver. I didn''t feel 100% better, but it cut the vomiting and really reduced the nausea which meant I could at least eat and drink something. If I''m a couple of hours late with a dose, the nausea and throwing up kick in pretty fast - hence why I know the m/s is still there.

Hopefully it was start to go away soon - certainly I''m not feeling as exhausted as I did in the 1st trimester.

Anyway, you are not alone! The absolute worst thing is that you feel your most ill when you have no bump and probably haven''t told people. I had to go public at 7 weeks as I was green and spent all day in the bathroom at work - it was becoming VERY obvious fast!

Yup, like all your ligaments pull really hard at the same time.

I don''t think it''s anything dangerous if it''s like that, but yours might feel different?

Courtney--The same thing happens to me too. I don''t feel terrible pain but just really, really uncomfortable.

I also am only 8w and can not sleep on my stomach anymore at all. I could have sworn I had at least up till 12w or so before I needed to sleep on my side. Its taking a while to get used to the change.

Courtney - I def don''t have any sneeze pain. nope. Ask your Dr...although I feel like it''s not something to worry about. anyone else?

Blue - I had the kind of m/s that was belching, nausea, overall motion sickness - not the vomiting. Thank god. I survived by drinking bubbles (gingerale, sparkling water) and eating regularly. that helped me.

Yay for feeling better Mela - I am hoping my turn comes soon!

Love the pictures of the baby shower, looks like lots of fun and yummy food (we don''t have them over here) - or registries or the such like, although I understand my grandmother is knitting me something!

The eggs look great - can you do a DIY guide for us? They''d be great Easter gifts.

Sabine, DH and I announced our choice of names straight away to everyone (Edward John for a boy or Daisy Pandora for a girl). There were a few raised eyebrows over Pandora - but otherwise everyone has loved them. Oh, except my brother''s FI who is fuming as she wanted Daisy and now that we have announced it to everyone she feels that even if we have a boy this time she can''t use it.

Hmmm, am sulking...

Having read through the thread on baby stuff, I went to research the UppaBaby Vista 2009 - which looks amazing. And they don''t sell it in the UK!!!!

You can import it from the US, but that''s an extra 20% in taxes and I wouldn''t get to try it out. Grrrrr - back to the Bee...

Yup to the sneezing pain. It is round ligaments, in my opinion, because it feels like a tugging low on the abdomen.

haha on the sulking. I find myself sulking a LOT about the cost of importing goods from the US to Canada. I always feel like "it''s not FAIR" (imagine with sulky face and hands across chest) lol

Pandora - that is a sticky situation with your SIL and the name Daisy.
40.gif
I hear this type of story often - and it''s such a no-win-situation. You don''t win if you give up the name to please that person (and why would you really), and you also don''t win if you name your DD Daisy because she''ll always feel you "stole" the name. dumb. IMHO, you should name your baby whatever you want. Worst case scenario, you both have Daisy''s!!! It''s happened before! lol.

Thanks for the compliments on the eggs. I have made them before for Easter and they are a bit hit! I''ll follow up with a DIY guide.

LOL, I have no intention on giving up the name at all! If we have a boy this time, we would still keep the name as a definite for a future girl. I don''t feel we ''stole'' it as we had announced it to all the families as our first choice before I told them - would also look weird if I backed down so she could use it later...

In the meantime, if my brother and her have a girl, they are fully entitled to use the name - but we would as well.

I made this clear to my brother - personally I don''t care if we both use the name (there are a gazillion ''Robert''s in my family), but I don''t want snarky comments from them if we end up using it after them.

Oh, and I really don''t like her and wish my brother was marrying pretty much any other girl on this planet (DH and both my sisters don''t like her either). I''m kind of glad that my due date means I won''t be at the wedding. Sad, as I adore my brother.

I''m with you on the ''it''s not fair'' thing. I don''t think it''s that great regarding choice in Europe - 17.5% sales tax for starters is a PITA. I was amazed what great things there were in shops in the US.

The UK does high-end and low-end well, but the mid-range market is very poor in comparison.

LOL Pandora. My brother just broke up with a girl that I could not stand.

Question about icy-hot. Is it safe? I have terrible upper back pain and I wanted to slather 5 bottles of icy-hot to make it go away but didn''t know if it was safe. I don''t see why it wouldn''t be but I couldn''t find anything about it in my books at home.

I wouldn''t just because it''s chemicals seeping into your skin...I''d use a hot water bottle instead. Hope you feel better!

Back from my 2nd appointment! We got to hear the hb on the doppler! I feel a bit more relaxed now. I really didn''t think she''d be able to find it. DH was pretty wowed by it and as we were leaving the office he kept trying to imitate the sound. It was really cute. I asked the nurse practitioner about what''s safe to use on my face to help control these awful breakouts and she said that benzoyl peroxide is fine. That means I can use my Acne Free which has done wonders in the past, but I searched online and it seems like no studies have actually been done on its effects during pregnancy and that makes me a little nervous. I feel like I''m wearing 5 pounds of make up right now and my skin still looks awful, so I need to find some type of a solution quickly. I haven''t had breakouts this bad since middle school.

I know I had planned not to look when they weighed me, but I couldn''t help it and I''m already up 4 pounds since my last appointment which wasn''t even quite 4 weeks ago. So that''s where all that fast food went...oops. Luckily my fast food cravings died down a few weeks ago so hopefully I''ll be able to get back on track for healthy weight gain.

I really didn''t like the NP at my first visit, but she was much better this time. Perhaps she was just having a bad day last time. She told me that my risk of m/c is now down to about 1% and is pretty much the same as it will be when I hit 12 weeks. We''ll still wait til Christmas Eve to tell though.

Mela, that shower looks great!

Kelley, my coworker had a similar problem. She''s due 5 days after me, but this is her 2nd so she was already showing when she told work 2 weeks ago. Good luck hiding it for another few weeks! I agree that looser fitting clothes might be able to help you pull it off. Love the fortune cookie idea!

Blue, so sorry I forgot you in the July group! Can I blame it on preggo brain? Have you tried sea bands? Girls on the bump say they work wonders. I haven''t had real morning sickness yet (knock on wood), but I hear most is gone by the end of the first tri.

CDT, yay for telling the fam!

Courtney, I''ve been having the same pain for the last few weeks. I sometimes get it when I sit up or roll over when I''m sleeping too. I looked it up and I''m pretty sure it''s round ligament pain. I thought it was too early for that, but apparently not.

Mela, if belching counts as m/s, then I''ve had that since day 1 and it''s still going strong, lol.

Thanks Neat. I think it was from all the standing and moving I did over the weekend (and in heels).

Robbie-That''s so great that you heard the baby''s hb!
face23.gif

Super BIG YEY on hearing the HB Robbie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is nothing like it
9.gif
. My DH has taken to calling me Barney, after the belching man on the Simpson. lol. That, or "hormona" when I''m moody. haha.

Pandora - I now recall this situation with your brother. Blech. I don''t care for my brothers GF AT ALL. I''m in the same boat as you, excpet my brother''s BF doens''t want/cannot have kids, so at least the name thing is off the table. Too bad about the wedding. Not that your missing it, but that they are doing it (lol)
11.gif
I''m going to hell in a handbasket.

Robbie - how far along are you again? d''oi.

Hey Fiery I noticed in another thread how you are wierded out by people asking "how are you feeling?" all the time! Me too! This drives me nutso, especially in a professional context! Anyone else bugged by this? I don''t want to discuss my physical sensations with colleagues, thank you very much!!

Recently, I have been debating how to tell the school I am interviewing at that I am pregnant (just so they aren''t all distracted by my belly during my research talk, the job doesn''t start for like 9 months so it isn''t relevant for start dates etc.--yes I know I don''t have to tell them but I don''t want a "pink elephant" in the room, so to speak
3.gif
. If I wasn''t showing completely I would say nothing at all and from what I can tell this will be a non-issue for them)... two of my older male collegues suggested the most bizarre ways to convey it, IMO: Prof. A said I should tell them I am pregnant by telling them I need lots of bathroom breaks during the day
20.gif
and Prof. B suggested I tell them I need a 30 minute break in the middle of the day because I am more tired than usual
14.gif
... so both of them thought I should tell them I am pregnant by pointing out my physical limitations! I cannot think of anything worse! hahaha... First off, I don''t actually need extra bathroom breaks, and second my energy is really good! I plan to talk about it as little as humanly possible during the interview days and instead focus on being positive, energetic, and smart
2.gif
Geez Louise! People are crazy about preggos.

LOL People are crazy about preggos!!

You know, the thing is I don''t mind with certain people. There''s a Director here that always chats with me about everything under the sun. She just had her second child so when she stops by I feel comfortable talking to her about it. But its weird with everyone else especially since in my Department of 13 there are only 4 parents and everyone else is under 30.

But ever since I got pregnant, like I said that''s all they want to talk about. One guy even stopped inviting me to happy hour because of it which really hurt my feelings! I told him being pregnant is not a handicap, I can still hang out
