Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

Hi ladies,
I''m sure none of you remember me, but I was on the TTC thread for a couple of months late last summer through early fall. DH and I decided to take a ttc break as we were dealing with numerous illnesses in our families and just felt the timing wasn''t right. In any case, we started ttc again in April and got our BFP in mid-May! I''m 6wk4d today and we just saw the heartbeat yesterday so I''d like to tentatively join your group...I am due 01/25/10.

A belated congrats to all the new mothers, I was on the TTC thread with many of you and am so happy to see you and your babies are doing well!

ps- cute bumps everyone!

Fiery, Thanks! I think you need to worry about pain/swelling when it's also associated with being warm to the touch and coming from a specific spot. I had a weird swollen spot on my leg months ago and one of my coworkers who is also an EMT told me that blood clots will hurt in one specific spot.

Thanks, Amber! That's exciting about the announcements!

Peony, cute shot!

Mandarine, boo to your dad. I think not sending pics is a good way to save yourself from the comments. I seriously don't get why everyone thinks it's ok to comment on a pregnant woman's body, but unfortunately they do.

China, if you decide to go sans epi, I highly recommend taking some type of natural birthing class. I really liked the Bradley Method class that DH and I took, but I've heard great things about Hypnobabies as well. The class really got DH excited about everything and helped him to become a great coach. He was even speaking up at the Dr's appointment yesterday, which is not something he's done in the past. I'd definitely look into getting a doula as well. Obviously we haven't used ours yet for birth, but she was great at the appointment yesterday and even remembered to ask some questions that I forgot about (mentioned them in the waiting room to her). She's definitely not taking the place of DH as the coach. She'll be there to support both of us. I kind of look at her as the MOH of our L&D experience, lol.

Tao, how did I miss that you're getting married tomorrow?! Congrats!

Oh my goodness, I just ate way to much at the end of the year picnic (in our school cafeteria...
28.gif
). I''d been soooo good lately, but faced with all that yummy food, I just went nuts!

Tao, congrats and good luck!!! How exciting!

Robbie and Peony, you look great!

Mandy, I''m so angry for you at your dad. Not cool.

NYCsparkle, so excited for you being next!

Fiery, definitely elevate if you can, but I think the pain comes with the territory. You should definitely tell your doc. about it at your next appointment.

Congrats AM!!! Welcome!

Also: Congrats Tao, I hope your day goes well, with no sickness (I''m in the sick boat with you- hello, it''s supposed to be GONE NOW!)

Peony, Robbie, and Sabine, you all look so cute! I''m going to try to muster the energy this afternoon to put on a cute top and have my photo taken.

Sabine- Congratulations on your last day of school AND the move! Busy week for you.

Mandarine- I''m not sure if this is the same as what you''re experiencing, but I had the burning as well (in the center of my chest/top of my bump) and my doctor said it was the muscles separating. Is it almost a stinging feeling?

fiery- As Pandora said, the sore swelling is probably just normal edema. Keeping them elevated as much as possible is a good plan.

am04- Congratulations and welcome!

tao- Happy wedding day!

China- I think it''s great that you''re going into the birth with an open mind. I''ve always figured I''d get an epi, but I guess it all just depends on if the pain is manageable. Women give birth without them every day, so it''s possible!

We met with the pediatrician yesterday, and both of us feel really good about her. She''s a lactation consultant, which is fantastic- any breastfeeding support I need, she said she can try to provide. She''s also fine with alternative vaccine schedules (DH and I sort of freaked when we saw a normal schedule entails, but she calmly explained to us what each is for) and seems to be open to more ''natural'' care. So far, thumbs up.

I hope I didn''t miss anyone! This usually fast-moving thread has been moving SUPER fast lately.

Sabine and Robbie love your belly pics, you gals look great. Cute belly Peony!!! Congrats and welcome to AM!!!

Robbie, everyone who saw me when I was carrying DD said for sure I was having a boy!! So maybe I will swicth my guess to girl..

Welcome AM!

Thanks for the info Mandarine! I am really, really bummed that I am going to have to tell my friend I might not be able to come, but I don''t think that I really have a choice. That stinks that your dad is saying that stuff!! My mom is the same way and both of my sisters have really big eating issues as a result of it. One of my sisters was hospitalized for bulimia.
7.gif
I am so glad that once I got to college I was finally able to have a healthy body image ''cause it sure does make it hard when your mom is so critical. Luckily my dad never mentions weight!

Sha, I think it depends on your practioner and also whether you pick a midwife or ob/gyn. My midwife has done a bunch of twins and she said that many of her twin moms were determined to birth without an epi or any pain meds and they did very successfully! I told her that if I have a vaginal birth I was probably going to get an epi (I want to go as long as possible without one, but I will probably get one eventually), and she was okay with that too.

Mandarine- I'm not sure if this is the same as what you're experiencing, but I had the burning as well (in the center of my chest/top of my bump) and my doctor said it was the muscles separating. Is it almost a stinging feeling?
Yes! I think that may be it. It's right at the top of the bump and if I press on it, it almost feels better. So weird. I'm asking the Dr on Monday, but it's so uncomfortable!!. Nothing I can do about it though I guess....

Peony You know I always "joke" that it's a miracle neither me or my 2 sisters have eating disorders. I am sorry to hear about your sisters...that's so sad and so wrong! I have 2 sisters and we're not overweight, but ever since I can remember weight has been an issue in my house. My parents are originally from Spain and in Spain image is a very important thing...so maybe that's why?. I'm not sure...but I'm sick of it!

I just sent my dad a LONG email with a ton of articles about twin pregnancies. I tried to be nice about, saying maybe he makes comments because he's not well informed, but I am doing everything by the book and have maintained a healthy and balanced diet while doing it (no junk)....so I nicely asked him to SHUT UP!.

I know they mean well, but it's hurtful. My sister was telling me I shouldn't be sending those emails, etc. I figured I think it's only fair and I have to be sincere. I am sure he's going to fell horrible about it, but it really is better for him to feel horrible once than for me to deal with this for the next few months of pregnancy! (and well, I'm not getting any smaller any time soon! lol)

M~

ETA: Thank you Sabine and Robbie for the support

and congrats and welcome AM!!!!!!!

Mandarine, you know I''m hearing the same thing from my Dad, so I say it was a good move to send him those articles. If he feels bad, maybe then he can know how YOU''VE been feeling every time he calls you "gordita" (which is SO MEAN), I mean, he had kids himself, why does he think you''re not supposed to gain any weight? Jeez. I think it was smart, and it''ll educate him as well.

Welcome am!!!

Just to clear it up--my wedding will be on Sunday....and I can''t wait...for it to be over! The planning is driving me crazy---but it''s been fun in a weird way.

Love the belly pictures!

Peony My doc said 26 weeks for me. Unfortunately I really wouldn''t plan on going-it is so common for twins to be born early that it''s just not a good idea to be in transit during that time in case something were to happen.

Welcome AM!!!!

I really do think it will help. He hasn''t responded yet and I know he will get a little sensitive about it....but I wasn''t rude or anything, just honest and to the point.
If that doesn''t work, I''ll start sending pictures of myself with a cut out image from a few months ago...hahaha ;)

Mandarine,
Just wanted to chime in and say I think it was a good idea to send him those articles. Maybe he will think twice about saying something hurtful again. I'm not sure why people (especially men!) think it's okay to comment on pregnant women and their bodies. When I was pregnant with my first, my hubby's cousin saw me at a get together and he said "wow, if you're that big now, how big are you going to be at the end!" It was so hurtful, I wanted to say back "well, I'm pregnant, what's your excuse for your belly!", but I was nice and just thought it
11.gif
. People sometimes don't realize the impact of their words on us. BTW, you look awesome and not "gordita" at all!

Swelling I had a tonne, remember I dropped 30lbs in about 2 weeks so obviuosly had a lot of water weight. I was told that it is fine IF when you wake in the morning it is pretty much gone. It really should get less after a night of sleeping in a prone position. If you are still very swollen in the morining, or if you wake and can''t recognize yourself then call the doctor!''

Natural birth I think what you really need is a good coach present with your to help. You can''t really think for yourself and instigate coping methods when you are in the thick of it, so having someone with you who can help you really makes all the difference.

RE: Natural Childbirth--My plan as of now is no epidural, however, I want the option made available to me. I heard from another woman at my OB''s office that you have to put your name on a list so that when you want the epi, it''s made available to you. I haven''t verified whether this is true or not but if it is then I will add my name in the beginning and I figure I could always refuse it later. My threshold for pain is extremely low but I can tolerate if I have a good support system (so I''m hoping my OB never pushes for the epi). FI is very worried about the pain I''m going to experience and he made the comment once before that I should just get the epi. I think it scares him to see me go through it. I''m actually more afraid of the epi than I am of the pain that I''ll experience so we''ll see.

Thanks for all that commented on the swelling.

TAO-Many congratulations in advance on your big day! I hope you have a beautiful wedding and that your day is perfect

Sabine-Good luck with your move tomorrow!

Amber-That''s awesome about the announcements! Etsy has some really cute styles if you are looking for inspiration.

Peony-You look great!!

Mandy-
20.gif
to the "gordita" comments. My in-laws have taken to nicknaming me "la gordita." They say it in an affectionate way and I always respond with "oh yay, fantastic." They also seem so proud with the fact that I have gotten fatter
20.gif
. I agree that sending dad the articles was a great idea. You do *not* need that kind of pressure.

Am04-Congratulations
36.gif
May first tri be morning sickness free!

Ebree-That''s fantastic news on the pedi. We haven''t even started to look
38.gif
. I need to, otherwise my OB will yell at me. I didn''t even think about the possibility of a pedi that is also a LC. I think that''s a great idea.

Steph-How are you feeling?

Thanks Steph!! It really is crazy. I am really happy DH has taking it upon himself to get educated...so I know he is supportive and understands that this weight gain is good!!. I really hate it when guys feel like they can make these comments to wowen!!!. Seriously, no uterus, no opinion!!

Thanks Fiery! In my case it''s not in an affectionate way, although I know gordita is also an affectionate term. In my case it''s more like "wow, she''s really getting chubby now!"....so it''s so straight forward that he couldn''t say he meants it as a loving term to refer to me...lol.

All in all, I don''t think he means bad...but they are just obsessed with body image!. Growing up it was my mom more than my dad...no it has turn and it''s my dad that makes all the comments. So hopefully this email will work...if not I have to learn not to let it bother me so much I guess.

Thank you guys again
9.gif

Fiery, I''m good thanks! Feeling little waves of sickness here and there, but I keep telling myself that''s a good thing! Hope your swelling goes down, that is the worst....I had swelling from 3 months on with my first, so I''m expecting the same with this one...yuck! Go put your feet up!

Fiery, my feet and legs never went down overnight (sadly), I was told to call the hospital and come in if I started to get swelling in my face. My BP was always low, so they weren''t really worried!

On the epi, seriously it''s a doddle and IMO no more painful than having blood taken (and WAY less painful than contractions!). You just have to sit still for 10 minutes or so - they will wait during contractions! The anaesthetist that came to do mine was really worried about doing it because of my previous back surgery - and said that two of the others had wimped out and sent her instead - after it was done she said it was one of the easiest she''d ever done as I knew how to sit for it and wasn''t nervous.

And OMG it is just so nice once it kicks in! It''s worth asking if they can do a mobile epidural, which is what I had. You are in charge of how much you have, so you can have it so you are completely without feeling from the top of the bump downwards or if you don''t press the button very often you can have it so that you can still walk around, your legs and feet aren''t numb and you can feel the contractions but they''re not painful - when it comes to the pushing part, if you have had an epidural they will normally get you to rest for an hour to let the head descend some more before you start, during that hour you can let it wear off enough that you can feel the pushing properly.

I did that and it was effective - but boy did I start pressing the button for more when the OBs came in! (I was also pleased I had it in situ as otherwise I''d have had to have a GA in theatre)

It''s the only type of epidural my hospital offers, but most over here just have the old-fashioned one where you are stuck on the bed whether you like it or not.

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome!

Robbie- I vote boy for you.

Phoenixgirl- I love China''s suggestions, especially Clare Elodie, Clare Beatrix and Clare Sophia.

I''m sorry so many of you have been on the receiving end of thoughtless comments...I''m gearing up for them to come. My stomach is flat in the morning but I look ~5 months pregnant (literally) by 5pm. Finding clothes to hide the bloat is hard and I can''t button my pants by the end of the day! Is there anything I can do to reduce the bloat? I''m just waiting for someone to out me at work; we aren''t telling anyone for at least a couple more weeks.

all of you look adorable with your bellies.

i now want to look up baby signing.

robbie - put me down for boy too... despite that being ebree''s choice.
2.gif
that visit just makes me mad on your befalf. how likely is it that you''ll get her for your birth?

cdt - congrats!! lex''s just adorable. and i love his name - so classic, with a great modern nickname.

am - congrats!

china - i can sympathize.. i had some women, upon hearing that i was pregnant, start telling me that i''d be crazy not to get the epi and that you don''t get a medal for going without (why do people think that anyone''s asking for a medal?) - before ever even hearing my plans. for people who knew my birth plan, some were pretty negative - but the homebirth was also factoring into that. i only really got real support from one person other than dh and my middies. if you''re thinking of an unmedicated birth, it really really helps to prepare yourself as much as possible beforehand, and to believe in yourself and surround yourself during birth with people who believe in you. i was pretty vocal during the end of transition and much of pushing that it freaking hurt, and it was definitely good having my middie telling me that she knew that it hurt but that i could do it and that it was what my body needed to do to get the baby out, as opposed to someone offering me drugs.
