Ditto! What wonderful news, Ginger

I love how all of the young docs around here are getting to this point around the same time. Must be something in the hospital water..

Congratulations GingerB and the GingerFamily!!

Steph- Evan looks adorable! I love that profile picture!

Well, our first appt was today, and it went amazing. Between the pap, U/S, bloodwork, and consult it lasted about 2 hours, but we were busy the whole time. I love our doctor and the whole office actually. Everyone was very helpful, patient, and they all seemed to be genuinly excited for us. We had our first real ultrasound and baby is measuring right about 0.36 inches and a steady heartbeat at 125 bmp. We could see the heart flickering almost immediately, she found the heartbeat really easily and commented at how strong it was for 6 weeks. THAT was so incredible to hear, and DH and I were wearing ear to ear smiles the whole time!!!
30.gif

The tech that did our U/S described the sack and the baby shapes as a diamond ring and our baby is the gem
41.gif
. I''m definitely going to like that place! I''ll be able to scan the picture tomorrow at work, so that I can post it. We''re just so excited!!!

Meresal, yea for a great appointment and a strong heartbeat! Can''t wait to see the picture, I love seeing how the babies grow so quickly in there!

Thanks steph! I was amazed at how much everything has grown in just a week and a half!! Crazy!!

Ohh, I forgot to add, that our due date is officially April 29, 2010.

Our next appt is at the 10 week mark, and they said something about a test that checks for problems. They check blood and measure the thickness of the baby''s neck. Does this sound familiar? It''s optional, but she said her mom''s are usually 50/50 on doing it or not.

It''s called an NT scan/bloodwork if you want to research it.

Neat, isn''t the 10-week mark test the sequential or nuchal translucency test?

Viz, to be honest I don''t even know how the whole pushing goes...I assume once the first baby is out it''s easier for the second one to come out since things are well....a bit stretched out already!

Meresal, yay for a strong heartbeat!!! It''s so exciting to hear and see them isn''t it?. You''re having a diamond baby! My birthday is one day before your due date

NT=nuchal translucency. Same thing. The sequential usually references using the results of the first trimester NT test with a second test (quad screen) in the second trimester.

Unless there''s something new...those are usually the major ones.

Steph: Great u/s picture and I hope everything with the cervix is okay. Also I love the name Evan as that is also my little ones name :) His middle name will be Alexander--what have you picked?

Feb: Love the tree idea and I feel so bad for your husband as well. I was wondering if he was going to feel some guilt--but like others have said, how could he have known--I''m glad that you have each other to support one another.

To Everyone: Sleeping is becoming such a pain! My back hurts all the time---i will definitely be trying the "chair" idea that everyone has been talking about.

When should I start worrying about the baby being breech? I heard 35 weeks but just wanted to see if that was true. I''m only at 30 weeks now (well Tomorrow) but the baby was breech at the last u/s. I know he has plenty of room still to move around but just wanted a heads up.

oops!...for some reason I got confused with the level 2!.
I don''t think there''s anything new...I''m just suffering from pregnancy brain!!!!
41.gif

GingerB, congrats!!!!!

Steph, I hope everything is ok with the cervix. Keep us posted!

Vizla, we ordered from BlindsGalore (.com) to get custom sized roller shades. Both times we got our shades in less than a week. The prices for shades didn''t seem that expensive; I''m not sure about blinds.

Re sleeping: this is probably my biggest complaint. I still feel pretty good but I get up 4 times a night on average. Now with the cold, I can''t even fall asleep for the first two hours . . .

My massage was very nice. She came to my house so I had to lie on my side (I wouldn''t expect her to have her own specialty pregnancy table), but the table and the pillow she brought were sooo comfortable, and the massage was neither too hard nor too soft . . . just right.

My biggest news is that I discovered I will be out a month longer than I thought on maternity leave! I got my FMLA/medical leave packet today, and I was expecting to get 12 weeks total (by the calendar), so I was thinking I''d return to school after winter break on January 4 (if I went until my due date I could take another week and a half, but I figured I should have a "what if I go into labor or on bed rest early" buffer). But it turns out that I get 13 weeks, not 12, and they count by work days, not calendar weeks, and we have 13 days off for holidays over that period. So with a one week "what if" buffer, I can stay out the rest of the entire first semester and start back on February 2, the first day of the new semester. So she should be at least 15 weeks old when I go back to work, which seems a lot better than the 11 weeks I was estimating. Yay for winter break, Thanksgiving, and MLK Jr. day!

(I know that if you live in some country with sane norms regarding maternity leave, you probably think it''s sad that I''m excited about getting 15 weeks off. I agree! I just think that every week counts when they''re that young, so I''ll happily take the unexpected weeks.)

The reason I was so confused was because so many people told me different things (some said breaks didn''t count; others say they did; and no one said we got 13 weeks instead of the 12 mandated by FMLA), and I guess I was too lazy (or maybe superstitious) to pick up my packet before school ended.

Of course, more than half of the leave will be unpaid and I have to use 30 of my 43 sick days for the six weeks when I''ll still be getting paid (or 40 for eight weeks if I have a C section -- another reason to hope I don''t have a C/S . . . I want to keep my sick days), but oh well . . . I''ll get 10 more days next school year.

I know a teacher who only took 7 weeks because she couldn''t afford not to get paid. What a sad system!

I just wanted to join the group. We found out we were pregnant Saturday night, and had my ultrasound this morning. We are just about 4.5 weeks!!
9.gif
Our EDD is April 26th!!

I hope to learn and share alot with you all. I can honestly say we are starting at square 1 and can use all the help possible. We haven''t told our parents yet, I know that mine will be excited, this will be the 6th GC for them... but the IL''s I am 100% will not be thrilled. They have stated numerous times how they think we should wait a few years, and are not going to take the news well.
Did anyone have this situation with one or both sets of parents? Especially those that found out they were pregnant soon after the wedding?
Congratulations Mere.....awesome news!!!!

Neat and Mandarine- Thank you!! The NT was the test I was thiking of. Was this routine for you all? Did you opt to have it? My doc told me this is the only thing that isn''t covered by my insurance, but we were thinking for the small price, it''s proabably completely worth it.
Mand- Maybe I''ll have eve more reason to celebrate your B-day this time around!!
28.gif
Hearing the heartbeat was one of the most amazing things I have ever heard. There is really a living person inside me, from DH and I!

Wow Phoenix!! Lots of extra days!! I hadn''t even thought about whether or not holidays count towards my weeks off. Off to check the benefits pack again...

Thank you Lori!!!

We didn''t have it because for us the stress of having a false positive (for downs or something else with a high false positive rate) would have been VERY high for me. Plus, we knew we were low risk for everything and wouldn''t terminate anyway. Plus for *us* they said that their false positive rates are even higher for twins-so we said no thanks.

While the bloodwork is pretty good for identifying some things, there are high false positive rates for other things (like telling you you are at a high risk for downs-most people who get screened as "positive" will have healthy babies).

So personally, I think if you know you wouldn''t terminate then it''s not worth it to have. If you think you might terminate based on the results OR you know that having results (whether good or bad) wouldn''t stress you out, then have it. Luckily it isn''t invasive at least.

it's great to be back...and thanks for the welcome. makes me feel like i'm coming home to a family of sorts

1.gif
so a brief update on me up to now preggo wise: we found out pretty eary, at four weeks -- announced it to gingerGuy by presenting him with a pair of baby converse chuck taylors (his fave shoes). it was funny watching the confusion, the skepticism, then the dawning realization float across his face! the m/s aka 24/7 hangover started at 7 weeks and was icky all the way through 14 weeks. not a whole lot of upchuck...but unfortunately on my very first day as a brand new heme/onc fellow the very first thing i did as i got off the elevator on my floor is run straight for the bathroom. haven't been able to eat raspberry jello since
40.gif
. the fatigue was ridiculous, and added to that the nausea, the stress of starting a new position, studying for my boards, and wanting desperately to not let my new colleagues down...i was on the miserable side for a good amount of july. told hubbs there better be multiples in there or we may be in for an only child situation
5.gif

but things got better, the nausea is subsiding and def haing more good days than bad. our plans for a large family are back on track

9.gif
. just had my tetra screen and gingerBaby's heart is beating strong and well. we are DEFINITELY going to find out the sex (Sept 30 eeeee!!!) can NOT wait. i'm sooo jealous of all you ladies whereyour OB does frequent u's cuz mine doesnt
40.gif
. So we can't wait to see our little one again.

Feb - I'm so sorry to read your news. the tree and commemerative pendant is a beautiful idea. hang in there...we're all thinking about you

Steph - congrats on re-joining team blue! that's adorable how your son is so excited! and your u's pic is awesome. i can already tell he's gonna be a heartbreaker!

viszla - i agree with you 100% about the flu shots. i get one every year because i'm an "at risk" population (hist of asthma) and the CDC and my OB are strongly recommending the H1N1 because pregnant women are at higher risk of death if infected and either way, infection can e devastating for the baby/fetus. i def have risk of exposure working in the hopsital and ER so I'm def geting the regualr flushot and am 95% sure I'll get the H1N1 when available.

November - i love the name olivia grace! so elegant!

Mandarine - I swear you have THE cutest baby bump! I aspire to you!

Natalina - the Strep B test is jsut a swab of your cervix. no worse (or better

5.gif
) than a Pap

LittleLysser - sending delivery vibes your way!

Meresal - that's so exciting! hubbs and i couldn't stop grining the whole day after our first visit

Phoenix girl - great new ont he extra time off! i'm so jealous. since i'm still in training, the rule are differnet for us i guess. i get only 2 weeks sick leave, 2 weeks of my vacation time, then unpaid leave that has to be made up. booo... right now we're planning for atleast 8 weeks...may extend to 10 at MOST.

Kaleigh, snlee, TGal, lili, qtiekki, sunkist, lorelei, dani, october2008bride - thanks for the welcome it's nice to be back!

houmedgal, icekid - def a challenge doing the pregers thing while in training, but i heard it's even harder after (ie while trying to start up the practice ). so gingerGuy and i figure we'd start up the assembly line now!

28.gif

whew..long post. reminds me of the original LIW days when it was a single thread!

Mer, we chose not to do the screening for the same reasons as NF. We knew we would not terminate anyway, so there was really no point. At the 20 week ultrasound, they do a very thorough ultrasound to check out all the systems for abnormalities.

NF and Steph- Those are the reasons my doc said (anxiety mainly), and if they are going to check at 20 weeks anway, then I think we might pass at 10. We wouldn''t terminate, I just worry I will have more anxiety by not knowing. Who knows, we''ll just have to talk about whether or not it is worth the cost, for us.

Here is the U/S from yesterday...

Meresal, Congrats on hearing the heartbeat, it''s so exciting. We actually did the NT screen because we would have considered terminating for certain conditions. The NT screen tests for more than just Downs, it also tests for some chromosomal abnormalities that are incompatible with life (i.e. baby is likely to be stillborn or live only a few days/weeks). This may not change the analysis for everyone, but it did for us. I could not imagine carrying a baby for nine months when I knew that it had no chance of surviving. I don''t judge those who choose to do so, it would be a heartbreaking choice to make. I am also the type of person that likes to have all the facts available to me. Some people say the NT scan has a high incidence of false positives, but that''s not really true. The test doesn''t tell you that you are negative or positive for anything, they give you a range of odds. For instance, the best odds you can get are 1 in 10,000, somewhat worse odds might be 1 in 500. Even with the worse odds, 499 of 500 babies will be born normal. If the test results came back with increased odds, you have the option for an amnio, which gives you definitive results (i.e. a positive or negative). Again, this is not the right choice for everyone, but I just wanted to share the experience of someone who chose to do take the test.

aww Meresal, what a cute little bean!. I did do the NT test with sequential (they take two blood samples at different stages). For me it was basically because I just wanted to know (even knowing with twins the results were not as accurate, although my Dr assured me they did adjust the results for twins). The results of the blood tests were not as important to me as the markers they look at in the ultrasound, as this is accurate even with twins as it is specific to each baby (the measurement of the neck fold, a measurement of the nasal bone, etc). I think it''s a personal decision, so do what you feel is right for you and hubby.

Ginger, thanks for the compliment!
9.gif
Hopefully it doesn''t get horrible huge towards the end!....I''m getting scared since it seems to multiply each week!

Mandarine Just wanted to let you know that we did end up getting the Bumbleride indie twin to replace our mover-broken jogging stroller and my new assessment of it is that overall it rocks. The downsides are that it doesn't fit through doorways with the cupholder on, it's very big even when folded (but not as big as say a Bob folded), and if your car is high OR a sedan it would be really hard to get into the car because it's heavy and bulky. My car isn't too bad because it's low to the ground and it fits in without having to turn it horizontal. But if you have to turn it horizontal it would be a PITA as it would if you had to lift it really high.

But some of my major complaints from the earlier model they fixed so overall we really like it. I know you were considering it-so just wanted to let you know what I thought of the newer version. Just make sure you get the 2009 model if you get one.

Congrats on a great u/s meresal!

Congrats on already being so far along GingerB! I''m now 14 weeks tomorrow and about 6 weeks into my first staff position in anesthesia. I guess (though it wasn''t reassuring at the time) that I should be grateful that I didn''t have real morning sickness, nor anything to give the game away so far. People keep asking me if I have kids and if I plan to have them (nosy OR and PACU nurses :) ), and so far I just say "none yet, but hopefully". I did one c-section yesterday where the mum didn''t have a friend/partner in with her. The nurse gave her one quick look at her bundled baby, and then had to go do something and put the kid back under the heating lamp. I had a resident working with me for the day, so I said I''d help her hold the baby and let her have a cuddle while the OB was sewing things up, and the didn''t want to give the little cutie to the nurse to take away to the nursery near the end of the case. The OB told me I''d better get on with having my own, rather than trying to steal someone else''s... Little does he know...

So then I was on call last night too, and asked L&D if I could borrow their ultrasound to more safely put a central line in this morbidly obese sick patient from the ICU. And then kept it long enough to have a peek myself. The kid is much less spastic now, waving arms and legs more gracefully, wiggling a little. Too bad I didn''t catch a shot of the long stretched-out leg or arm - those were darn cute too.

I''m starting to get a little plumper now. Probably not too noticeable with clothes on, but I can''t suck my gut in the way I used to. So far no one has asked if I''m pg - we''ll see how long that lasts. I''m planning to wait 2 weeks till after my 16 week appointment before I start to tell my boss and others.

U/S explanations:
Left picture: my attempt at face-on view. Head at 4 o''clock, some part of arm at 7-8 o''clock, body at 10 o''clock, and the little black bubble in the body is what I think must be the stomach bubble.
Middle picture: the head is the blob at 5-6 o''clock, with a little hand above the chin area. At 9 o''clock, you can see a little bit of ribs, and at 11 o''clock you can see 4 little white spots that are the base of the spine. 12 o''clock is a line of leg, and between 11-12 o''clock is the bum.
Right picture: the spine and ribs. It was too cute to pass up.

13w5d.JPG

Mer, we did the NT scan for the same reasons as November - we would have terminated for a number of conditions. We had decided in advance that we would do an immediate CVS if the numbers looked bad - fortunately they came back incredibly good and my hospital has a very low false negative rate so it was a big relief.

CVS is a test where they remove some cells from the placenta either via your abdomen or your cervix and can be done at 12 weeks as opposed to amnio at 15/16 weeks. CVS results come back quicker as well. There is a slightly higher miscarriage rate - but honestly it''s down to the skill of the surgeon carrying out the procedure: you want someone who does them everyday not once in a blue moon. I would want to know early as there is a HUGE difference in terminating a pregnancy at 12 weeks to doing so at 20+ weeks both psychologically as well as regarding safety for the mother

10 weeks seems a bit early to me, here they like you to be at least 11 weeks and preferably 12 weeks - I know the limit is 13 weeks 6 days.

If nothing else the NT scan is a great one for seeing the baby - mine was about 40 minutes and the whole baby fits on the screen at that point, later you can only see chunks at a time as it''s grown too big!

Feb
The flowering tree and pendant are wonderful way to remember your baby. How are you feeling?

Mer
Cute u/s pic. I''ve heard that it starts around 7 weeks for a lot of people, so I hope you don''t get any m/s or not a bad case of it.
I think the dr are not very good at making it clear that the 1st trimester screening and NT scan are not a positive or negative test. I know my dr isn''t b/c he tells me they come back negative. The results of those tests are actually odds like 1 in 400 chance or 1 in 10000 or whatever. And there is a "normal" odd for every age, so they will say you are positive if your result is a higher odd that the "normal" odd and vice versa.

viz
I know, I feel like I just found out yesterday I was pregnant, and now I am almost halfway. But it was also yesterday that Meena was a newborn, and now she is 13 months. Time flies when you are a mommy/mommy-to-be.
Full term is 37 weeks, so just a few more weeks for you. =)
My dr hadn''t talked about the H1N1 vaccine. I didn''t get the flu shot last pregnancy, but I am considering getting both flu shots since I have a toddler at home. The pedi recommended both shots for Meena.

LL
Hang it there. Your baby will be here b4 you know it. Good luck with L&D.

Mandy
I think I read somewhere that usually baby B will turn to head down position after baby A is born. What is the chance of the babies turning in the next couple of weeks?

phoenix
I am glad you get the few extra weeks. More than half of maternity leave will be unpaid this time too, but DH says it doesn''t matter and just take the max time off for the leave. So I will taking 18 weeks (6 weeks for recovery and 12 weeks for bonding time). I would be so sad and tired to have to go back to work after 7 weeks. I wish our maternity leave policy was better in the US.

GingerB
Wow you have a lot on your plate. You are a strong woman. I am hardly motivated to work nowaday. LOL.

drk
How cool to sneak a peek of your LO. I can''t wait for my u/s. I should get the appointment this Fri.

sleeping
I am getting pretty uncomfortable lately. It''s too early for that to start. I also sleep with 4 pillows, but I guess it''s time to bring out the pregnancy pillow.

Qti, they still have space to move so we''re waiting to see what position they are in for the next u/s...which is in 2 weeks!. I think with twins it gets harder for them to turn later on because space becomes an issue. I hope they turn though!!!.

DrK, what adorable pictures!!! CONGRATS!!!

Neat Thanks!!!!. That is really helpful!. I ended up getting a Buick Enclave, so I have the space in the car...and it really isn''t too high (like other SUVs). I''m having a hard time finding a local store that has the double in stock to try it. I still think I probably will have to end up with two strollers though...right?. So I was thinking getting a lightweight (like MacClaren) and then something like the Bumbleride or other type of stroller that I can use for light jogging/walking the dog at night. The Valco and the Easy Walker seem really nice too. Not sure if you had a chance to see those in person or if you had any comments on those. Anyway, thanks so much for the review!. It is definitely my favorite stroller out there so far! :)

I did see the Valco-I preferred the bumbleride but can't remember why right now... I never saw the easywalker in person but I opted not to even look at it because it looked SO much like my other jogging stroller which really didn't function too well for everyday use (the seats weren't super comfy for the babies, the footrests were useless, the straps were huge on them, the canopy sucked, etc.) It rolled like butter-but I refused to use it most of the time. So if the easywalker is indeed like the mountain buggy I had-I would vote for one of the others hands down. I know some people love the mtn. buggy but I really didn't like it for an "all terrain" stroller that the babies could sit in comfortably all day KWIM? And the canopies on the easy walker concern me-especially in florida you want all the coverage you can get so make sure they go down far enough.

I do think 2 are really nice to have. We still use our Maclaren often and I still love it.

Mandarine - I''ve seen quite a few twin vaginal deliveries (anesthesia stand by in case twin B needs a stat C/S). They all got epidurals to be sure a good quick block would be possible if a C/S were needed. A always had to be vertex. B it didn''t matter so much. The women usually got a few contractions after A was born to see what part of B would come down - if head, yay, proceed as normal. Otherwise the surgeon would often reach all the way up there and try to grab a foot to do a breech extraction. Basically grab one, then both feet, and help pull the kid out before the cervix has a chance to clamp down again after A was out. Luckily, none I saw ended up needing a C/S for the second kid.

Thanks Neat!!

Thanks DrK! That is good to know. I have to talk to my Dr because I know some doctors are not comfortable delivering the second baby breeched (at least that''s what I''ve read!)...but I need to start asking the Dr this question as I really would rather have a vaginal birth...if possible. At the end of the day though, of course all that matters is that both boys are delivered safely...so if that''s a c-section, then that''s what it is!.

***

I went to my first childbirth class today...and well, it was a bit of a waste of time. We have two classes left and I hope the next two are a little better!.

Question on names for you guys...we still have no idea hat we''re naming the boys, but we both really like Alexander for one of the boys...

Here is the problem, Alexander is a variation of my husband''s first name. If you have me on that other networking site you can see what my husband''s name is (I just don''t want to post it here).

In any case....

Do you think it''s weird or "unfair" if we decide to use that name for one of the twins?. I know with twins rivalry is probably more heightened than it is for non-twin siblings...but the truth is we can barely agree on any other names!. Right now we have Alexander and Lucas. I love, love, love both names...but I''m concerned that it will cause some issues with the "why was he named after my dad and I wasn''t?". It''s not technically their dad''s name..but close enough. DH and I talked about it and we were saying we can be honest and say it had nothing to do with that...but we couldn''t agree on any other names! (which is the truth). We were also saying that if you''re raising both abbies the same way then this shouldn''t be an issue and we would stop any mention of "special" names right away.

Then for middle names we have my dad''s first name and DH''s dad''s (that passed away when he was 4) middle name. If we ended up choosing Alexander, his middle name would have to be my dad''s first name as DH''s dad''s middle name also starts with an "A", so it would sound a little weird.

So that worries me too...now the baby would have almost the same name as their dad and the middle name being the first name of the only living grandpa.
5.gif

Who knew it would be SO hard to pick names!!??. I''ve had two vivid dreams of delivering the boys (one vaginally and one c-section!) in both dreams we had an Alexander and a Lucas...Alexander was whomever came out first.

That was probably even confusing to read!. Am I over thinking this???

Mandarine-would you call him Alex or Alexander? And does your DH go by a nickname or his whole name?

Knowing what your DH''s name is...if he goes by a nickname it might be unfair. It would just be so similar and might be a little odd to have one boy essentially be named after dad and the other have a totally random name...

You don''t have any other family names you could use instead of Lucas? Or for a middle name for Lucas? (I LOVE Lucas by the way!)

Mandarine - I agree with Neat, that using Alexander might be unfair. Since the two of you can''t agree on 2 names, have you thought about the possibility of you and your husband choosing one name each?

Mandarine, sorry your first class wasn''t great. Hopefully they''ll get better. Ours did, but it was partly that we had lower expectations after that first week.

Re: Alexander. I think it''s ok. What if you''d had two non-twin boys? (Am I just missing the twin rivalry thing?) You could just say, "They called you baby A and baby B, and we thought we''d give baby A an ''A'' name" or "We always planned to name our first son after Daddy (or Daddy''s father), and our second son after Daddy''s father (or Daddy)."

I actually think that the name of your deceased FIL is more special because he is gone. I''d explain it to the boys that way . . . Daddy missed his own father so much that he wanted to name a son after him. We decided to use it as a middle name so we wouldn''t have too many "A" names . . . something like that.

Thanks guys!....it''s so confusing.

DH goes by "Al" or his full name..never ever by Alex, so that''s why we thought it''s probably ok.

If I had my way it would be Marcos and Lucas or Matias and Lucas...but DH hates both of those (I love them!). DH''s favorite name is Thomas, which I like...but I don''t like "Tom" and let''s face it, that''s what he''ll end up being. DH thinks it''s so cool that Thomas means "twin" and he loves the name.

So if we each chose a name, each boy will end up with a name that either him or I dislike

Then we both liked "Connor"...not very latin, but it''s easy to say so I thought my family would be ok with that. I sort of mentioned it to my mom and she almost had a heart attack. I know I shouldn''t care, but the thing is my entire family is latin and my DH''s mom''s side is from Spain...so really the boys should have names that are easily translatable or something. It''s so hard!

Phoenix, I also agree that DH''s dad''s middle name is more special...I actually like the name as a first name, but DH doesn''t.

Unfortunately we don''t have any more family names that we like

So if the boy''s nickname is Alex and nobody calls DH that....is that still weird?.

I''m open to more suggestions, but we''ve gone through 3 books and are stuck to these two names!. Vetoed: Matias, Marcos, Oliver, Eric, Noah, Johann, Joshua, Andres (nephew''s name), Nicholas, Samuel, Daniel, Robert, Pablo (nephew''s name)....and probably a whole lot more that I can''t think about right now!
