Greetings

to all,

I have been evesdropping for months now, and thought I should finally post and confess of my ill manners! I have so enjoyed reading the posts. I have learned alot, laughed and have even cried at your posts. This is such a great community! The group is always as enthusiastic for the young bride and her .10 solitaire as for the "advanced" bride and her 8 carat upgrade! My hat is off to you all.

Thought you may be curious but my screename derived from my boyfriend and his hunt for the allusive engagement ring. Not knowing a thing about diamonds and years before this this forum, he called a buddy who was in the know (prehistoric pricescope). The buddy asked what size diamond do you want? His reply, "Oh I don''t know the carat size , but I want it to look like a DOOR KNOB." (for those of you who don''t know, the turn of the century doorknobs were this fabulous hunk of faceted glass...the same size as doorknobs today...just clear cut glass or even crystal). The ever knowledgeable buddies'' advice was that the largest stone a "girl" of my age could carry off was a 2 carat...and anything larger would not be believable! Arrghhhh! The 2.11 carat brillant doorknob arrived and I was speechless. I must say the buddy was right. All the replies were, is that thing real?

Fast forward to the upgrade period. 10 years later. My husband is supporting me in my setting upgrade...(shhhh-there is diamond shrinkage/as in drawer pull)...but I love this doorknob, and wouldn''t trade it for all the "handles" in the world.

My delimma is that his preference remains smooth simple fluid metal (as in the great artisian Mark Morrell), allowing the diamond to be center stage. That is also my deisre. Then YOU... YOU.... YOU... PAVE girls came out and reuined it! I can''t keep my eyes on the simplicity for the square edged 3 sided pave is blinding me. I have read and reread all the pave posts. Mine vision has to be custom made. I have sifted through every manufacturer every retailer.... I just can''t decide fluid or pave? My diamond is loose and has been for over a year. (My husband is now no help as he wants me to drill a hole in the center of the thing and wear it on a chain.) I need help in pulling the trigger.

If you, the board are willing, I would like to ask for your assistance, and will be posting some ideas soon. Please jump in, no need to sugar coat...

So excited I have finally come out and opened the door! So, whadda ya say, may I come in? Pretty please?

i totally LOVE your story..that is so cute and I can see why you''d be sentimental towards your original door knob

anyway, your debate is one i have had with myself many, many, times. We would be more than happy to help you find your dream setting or give our opinions along the way..can''t wait to see some pics of your ideas

~~Door Knob, your story is sooooo sweet!! I really enjoyed it!!! I understand your dilema because a round brilliant in a solitaire setting would be gorgeous, but so would the pave''... so many choices!!! What kinds of ideas do you have???

I love you story Door Knob, and a big welcome to PS!!!!

Welcome!

Welcome to PS! After reading your post, I have a possible solution. Have you considered getting a simple platinum setting for your stone and an eternity pave ring to match?!?! There are some great examples that have been posted lately!

WELCOME!!! cute cute story!

researcher- that's what i was thinking. if you aren't too tied to your wedding band, you could get a new pave one and have a fluid band for your doorknob!

ETA: so sorry: "Door Knob"

Great minds think alike!

Welcome door knob!!! I love your story!! All the pave here is extremely tempting, it''s going to be a tough decision. But we''re here to help you and look forward to seeing ideas. Keep us posted...

What a great intro, Door Knob! Welcome!

You''re going to have so much fun deciding....I can''t believe you''ve allowed your beautiful honker to languish unmounted for a year! You need to get to work, Girl!

Whenever someone mentions MM I go back to his website and drool all over again...his work is so incredible. I guess I''m partial to more classic, flowing clean looks in an Ering...perhaps with great sidestones...

....but then pave is sensational, too! So many choices, so little time...

Can''t wait to see what you''re thinking of so far..

Have a ball!

PS: Are you thinking of getting a new wedding band to go with the ring? Then I''d have it all: MM ering with diamond eternity band..

WELCOME!

Am I the only one who was expecting to see the doorknob?

You can''t tempt us like that!!!
I love the story...love the part about looking like the doorknob rather than being as big as one.

I''m sure no matter what you choose it is going to be stunning.

That''s hilarious!

But seriously, I want to see pics of the real one as well!!!

Welcome door knob! I love your story. I had the same idea as jcrow. Get the fluid solitare and two thin pave bands, one for each side. Best of both worlds!

Welcome, welcome - you have definitely come to the right place! Oh, yes, please post pix of your doorknob along with any other setting ideas you have. We''ll be happy to give opinions!

Hey Door KNob....

Look through lots of pics, take ideas of what you like and try to sketch these things into a ring.

I just did that and designed my ring...Love it...

I have to say that the PS group are great...they have fabulous ideas and are very helpful!

WELCOME!

Oh WOW!! What a great welcome! Thank you one and all! I must tell you, you all seem like old friends....your beautiful rings and your names are all so familiar to me! I have read your posts so often I was thrilled to see your replys! Thank you for your excitement and greetings. I would exclaim, Mrssalvo wrote! Oh my... bling*diva*!! And right down the line! I am a tad star struck!

Madame Bijoux, Angel 7 and Kaleigh...thanks for the welcome!

Glad you liked the story.

The eternity band is a fabulous idea. Researcher and jcrew thanks for the suggestion. I so envy those of you who have them...but it has been since April 2004 since my stone was loose...and the replacement mounting search began for the Door Knob...how long will it take for an eternity band? Board, can we do one thing first...don''t get me side tracked...I sway very easily. I think I may consider the one ring only thing track...now...with the option to fall on the eternity as suggested. Thanks for the great ideas.

My original set was the standard thin gold tiffany style 6 prong and the w/band was the same width just plain gold. My upgrade is all for the WHITE metal!! So the band is tucked away...the loose diamond...horror story. Went to a traveling Road Show remount event at the mall. I got to watch my diamond set, cleaned and walked out all with in 20 minutes. Stupid! Realized the ring was as crooked as the salesman, returned had the stone dismounted (??) and was told it would be $300 to reinstall the diamond in the original setting they just removed it from...ARGH! Hence the loose stone.

Widget you are right. Anguish I have for over a year. I have had the time to narrow down the design features though. I can now see the finish line.

Firegoddess, CdnblinGal , Shay37, LLL, and Odilia the doorknob is tucked away in a drawer now. It is getting ready for it''s pricescope debut...but actually if you just look at the photo Demelza posted....

that is PRICELESS! Too funny. I have your photo on my desktop now. Sent it to my husband and, well our house is rocking with laughter. Thanks so much and thanks for Lynn B. for her help. Just great! Yes, that is what he had in mind...A DOOR KNOB. Thanks for the effort you went to!

Again, thanks to all of you and your warm welcome. I so wish you could all come over for cookies and punch! You are all invited! If I left anybody out you get two cookies!

Oh I got sided tracked from the smooth simple fluid metal solitaire setting...when I saw that link that one of your provided a few months ago about ___? McGraws engagement ring...Wham 3 sided square edged pave 5 carat honker! Told you I get easiily sided tracked! No MORE links...OK?

This is my first reply...should one click on reply at the top of the original post? Or at the top of the last post? Hope I didi it right!

yeah I get two cookies

~~Door Knob, you are tooo sweet!! I must say that I love the e-ring that Jay McGraw designed for his fiancee'', it was incredibly gorgeous!!

I must say though, (if I may add my .02) that although I love the pave'', my heart (and eyes
4.gif
) always go back to the classic solitaire. There is something so elegant and classy about it... Tacori E-Ring and Jcrow are sooo right!! I think you should get the solitaire (in platinum or white gold) and have one or two pave'' eternity bands... who knows? Maybe you could even get the square-egded 3-sided pave''... just a thought!! LOL
2.gif

~~Hey Tacori... since we are such great friends

can I have half of your cookie???

What do I like? nothing smaller no wider than 2.5 on the shank. Bright finish metal..not antique or milligrain.

For pave:
I really like the Jack Kelege line in pave but can''t find a site with the model. Tried it on locally at the priciest boutique we have. 3 sided square edged pave...there are pave scrolls that roll under the head. The basket head is narrow at the bottom and flares out with the girdle. It has the milligrain...

The Leon Mege Emerald cut shown on the anvil. Square edges...basket head...claw prong...about 2.5 mm?

The Pearlman collection has a great one...it doesn''t have the head I want. But Bill is the Best! Bill or claw prongs? Hard choice.

On the board I adore Gingers ring. Claw prongs...It has the three sided graduated size pave...It has the head I want with seperate prongs... shaped to flank the shape of the diamond...(make sense?) narrow at the base flaring at the top. The girdle of the diamond is surronded by the prong tips not the basket ring. The basket ring is a smaller diameter that the girdle...Oh this is soo hard to describe. Is her ring a Leon? Are there any other images of hers on the board? If I could do Gingers ring in bright finish metal with only 1/2 shank pave...and maybe change the cathedral a bit...surely whe wouldn''t want a clone on the board...I do love hers. Yummy. I suppose this paragraph was a bit presumptuous for a first time poster huh? The nerve coming in here and wanting to copy a ring. Ekkk!

For a MM design along the same lines...just simple shank, basket head, gentle closed cathedral slope to head. Claw prongs. Do I understand MM doesn''t do square edges though? Just a fluid rounded edge? I have seen that pave masterpiece he just created...(can''t remember who for...) it is fabulous. But for me and my MM I can''t cover the metal with pave. His liquidity needs to shine. So it would be a simple solitaire...so a no stone MM.

Do you think my pave eye can take it for long? Will I need a pave fix...once a pave junkie always one? And that is where the eternity band suggestions will arise? Researcher, your ering looks fluid and smooth, is that what you have done? Do you have any other images of your avatar? It is lovely.

Tacori Ering, Atroop71 and MissGotRocks nice to meet all of you. Thanks for your reply. You all get two cookies. No problem I can''t sleep, this priccescope board keeps me up all night. I will be baking until 4 am. You can have as many as you would like.

Angel7: did you just change your avatar? Where you the jack-o-lantern? I have been returning to the post your started about prongs. Was using the Jack-o-lantern to guide my way!

Sorry my posts are novels. I will try to shave some words out in the future.

Thanks again to all!

Door Knob
