How do you guys *really* feel about 5+ct diamonds?

I am wondering what PS'ers really think about larger diamonds, particularly RB's?

I recently posted about my friend's 5ct F VS2 stone and the thread received far less comments/ compliments than those I'd received for my own RHR which is a 3.5ct halo'ed pear. In fact, a few PS'ers seem to like/ prefer my "smaller" rings, which also include a 3.02ct F VS2 (thank you, he he

).

On the other hand, the Celebrity Ring thread is only of the longest running here on PS.

Just wondering how you guys really feel about larger stones? Most of us here, myself included, confess to being size wh*** and yet there seems to be distinct lack of interest for larger stones (unless it seems the wearer is a celebrity).

Is it my imagination?

I realise that everyone is different in their tastes, but generally it seems that most PS'ers would prefer to go for size, and after cut, would sacrifice colour in order to gain in size. And yet, not so many people here seem to be very keen on 5ct diamonds or larger (and I am not talking about costs here but of course I realise that costs definitely come into consideration). Just purely from the point of view of lusting after a *dream* diamond, most PSers' do not seem to .

I'd love to own a larger stone some time in the future (probably much much further in the future, given the recent economic developments or rather lack of) and I see myself owning (or hoping to own) a 5 or 6 carater, probably a RB or an emerald cut diamond. Do you think they're too gaudy? Is it not perceived too well IRL in general? I'd have no problem at all wearing one and the crowd I mix with (which actually is very diverse) couldn't give a t***, either way. They just know I *LOVE* diamonds and kind of put up with my madness. Only a few (very few, including my tai tai friend) appreciate them but most just accept that diamonds are part and parcel of what makes me who I am. I think my friends like me, regardless of whether I have or do not have diamonds, which is really great. I also love my friends for much different reasons, like a genuine heart, intellectual reasons etc. In fact, I hang out with people whom I like and with whom I have some common interests and vice versa, without really thinking as to why we're friends in the first place.

So my question is purely one of curiosity and I'd love to hear from other diamond addicts like yourselves.

I love to look and admire them, but I can''t imagine owning/wearing a 5+ carat diamond. That just doesn''t fit in with our lifestyle or our circle of friends/family so I would feel a bit odd. I would love to spend the day at a jewelry store trying some huge sparkly diamonds on though

Ditto and me too; also if it was in my circle I still wouldn''t (personally). I do think they are beautiful on other people though and fun to see.

Honestly I''m just not enamored with rounds in large sizes. I''d much prefer a fancy in a large size any day!

I didn''t reply only b/c the pictures weren''t clear, and I wasn''t able to really see the diamonds. (no offense meant) I would love to see some clearer pics of those rings! I am sure they are gorgeous. And to answer your question, I like big and little rb''s. But bigger doesn''t always mean better IMO.

I don''t really like RBs above about 3cts (OECs go up to 4.5-ish). But fancies in larger sizes? Oh heck yes! I love larger pears, cushions, ECs and Asschers. *swoon*

I don''t know what it is about large RBs, but they really don''t do anything for me. (But then, modern RBs don''t usually do much for me.)

It really depends on the individual ring/stone. For me personally, I''ve tried on larger rounds and they just look ridiculous on my finger. But I have seen some that I''ve loved on others, including the one on the thread you posted - I thought that one looked gorgeous

Hahaha, ditto! I could barely see them so I didn''t have much to say. Also, I like seeing regular or semi-regular posters'' diamonds more than their friends'' or relatives'' diamonds. I guess I just feel like I "know" the regulars so I care more?

I do love looking at the big honkers here on PS, but in real life I probably wouldn''t be comfortable wearing a round much bigger than 2 or *maybe* 3 carats. My ring is already the biggest of anyone I know and it''s a 1.5 radiant in a halo.

I love ''em!

For my small fingers, though, 2 ct is perfect.

Haha ditto!

I love looking at HUGE diamonds - anyone remember DiamanteBlu''s upgrade thread? Those were incredible!

But I also know I could never wear them, because I have small fingers, and they''re also not my style (too overpowering for me). I do enjoy looking at them and envy those who can really pull it off!

Ditto. I also didn''t comment since the pictures were very blurry.

I have never seen one IRL, but I LOVE drooling over them on the internet. However, I would personally be uncomfortable wearing one, I freak out over my 1.6! But, it might be fun to ''borrow'' one once in a while

I wear a 2.75 (2.5 in the winter) and I wouldn''t mind rocking a 7ct or larger asscher or EC.....

The pics you posted were really hard to see so I didn''t comment on them. I went for size. If I am ever fortunate to have a 5ct plus stone I would rock it everyday! That is my dream....

However, I probably wouldn''t ever go for a RB 5ct+stone. They just aren''t for me. I love my emerald cut.

Thank you so much for your replies, ladies. Sorry I should have said that I am not worried by the lack of comments on the thread about my friend''s 5ct ring (after all its'' not even mine he he
9.gif
), just really genuinely surprised. I should have guessed that the blurry pictures did not help. But I had still expected many more responses.

Your inputs and comments are very interesting. Please keep them coming, ladies.

I am, for one, totally enamoured with Diamante Blu''s incredible own rings and those on the thread she posted. In fact, I wonder what''s happened with her upgrade project (I hope you''re reading this, D. Blue!?
9.gif
).

It also seems that PS''ers, given a choice, would prefer a larger fancy shaped stone over a RB. Why is that? I *love, love, love* larger EC''s (like Diamond Fan''s incredible 9ct Tiffany''s), I think they''re very elegant. But out of all the shapes, I love RB''s the most, because of the incredible fire that they give out.

Hi Pheonix!!

So I''m guessing this is a ''honest opinion'' solicitation and replying on that assumption.

One caveat, I''m generally not a RB center stone person for rings, and I do not own one ring with a round center stone... and never have.

5 carat rounds on MOST hands look a little too big for me. I''m talking average finger size of 4-7. I have not seen your thread though... I don''t venture on SMRT too often.

I love, and would own a five carat cushion or asscher or EC though for a ring''s center stone.

Probably not a pear or oval in 5 carats (3 carats is about my max there) either. Although I''m more of a fancy fan... so for me that helps.

Exactly how I feel. I would love to drive a sportscar around the block, but it just wouldn''t work if that was my means of everyday transportation.

I will say though that PS has made me love bigger diamonds. When I first starting looking at e-rings, I didn''t like big diamonds AT ALL - but I''ve found here that I love them because you can see the facet pattern so beautifully. The beauty of a step-cut is that you can really see the pattern, so I think my love for my little EC carries over to a huge round :)

I think about 3 1/2 to 4cts is the biggest I like in round cuts... though I might make an exception for a huge OEC! An antique cushion would be more up my alley in that type of size, though.

That being said, though I do loooove big sparkly stuff, realistically I haven't wanted anything bigger than my 3.5ct OEC, and don't really think I ever will. I tend to look/dress youngish for my age- rather Gothy in fact- (just turned 32 though!) so people generally assume it's fake on me anyway... anything bigger and I'd really be pushing it! It seems perfect for me- huge, to me, but not silly looking IMHO. (Well, and then there's the fact that I suspect the DH would like DIE if I wanted anything bigger!)

Plus there does come a point where a ring looks to be wearing YOU than the other way around! I personally would feel self concious in a huge RB and thus I'd probably look silly in it, but that's me. I do wear a wide selection of RHRs (including plenty that are, um, white and sparkly but not diamond) but I don't own anything the even size of my OEC diamond, which is a bit under 10mm.

That being said, if a person really wants, and can afford, a huge round brilliant of 5 cts or more, go for it- life is too short to care what other people are going to think or say.

However, you would have a crapload of conversations about a ring like that I'd imagine. I tend to have people ask me about my 3.55ct OEC on a daily basis at work. (In fact, some days if I'm feeling especially grouchy/notchatty I notice I will hide my hands a bit from customers.)

ETA: I wonder if we like fancy cuts in bigger sizes just because they are typically elongated and would thus fit on a finger better? I don't really know why a fancy cut in a larger size seems more attractive to me than a RB...

no lack of interest here!
28.gif

i certainly wouldn't turn one down.

I don''t comment on blurry photos because that wouldn''t be sincere. Give me some clear shots, though, and then we''re talking.

However, I''m not the biggest rb fan to begin with, and I find that I like them less and less the bigger they get. I LOVE a 5+ ct fancy though, and if it''s a cushion, I may drool on my keyboard.

I would definitely wear a huge diamond. While I understand, in theory, what everyone means when they say a big stone won''t fit their lifestyle, that just doesn''t speak to me. My lifestyle is pretty simple, but if I feel like running around with a 6.5 ct cushion on my hand, then I will. And it will fit my lifestyle just fine, trust me.

As someone who wears a large stone I think they are fine, as long as the wearer is comfortable. I tend not to like rounds that get so big...as they are like headlights to me, but I do love asschers and ovals and emerald cuts in large sizes. They can be simply stunning.

Yup.

Anything over 3 ct doesn't seem wearable on a daily basis to me. I like looking at 5ct stones but can't imagine going to the grocery with it ya know? My engagement ring upgrade will be 3 ct. but it won't be for a few more years. I'm an asscher gal so I'll have to go a little larger for the look I want.

p.s. I prefer your ring over your friends for sure!!!

Oh, I would LOVE to see those babies in person! I think big diamonds are DYNAMITE! The only reason I didn''t comment on the thread was because I couldn''t see the bling well enough to commnt. But the blurry photos still looked pretty yummy!

agreed! rounds bigger than 3 cts look weird to me! I don''t know why!!

I looked a several 5ct RB''s. Bleh! They looked like door knobs on my 4 3/4 size finger. BUT, larger 5-6ct in EC''s, Asschers, etc.. now that I could do!!
