I LOVE EM ALL!big...little ....ANY shape, size or quality!....rounds past 5cts do get a little over welming on a womans hand...i love the shape of a longated emerald cut in a large carat weight for either ladies of gents rings...

I love to look at them, but I probably would feel a little self conscious with something that large on. I loooove oogling them though!

(very few, including my tai tai friend) appreciate them but most just accept that diamonds are part and parcel of what makes me who I am.

Phoenix--what does tai tai mean?

eta: nevermind--googled

Coati, I googled it too because I *thought* I knew what it meant - turns out I was thinking of something much different (i.e. definition of tai tai as it fits into like 1800 China...I''ve been reading too many James Clavell''s novels!

)

I think big rounds can look too fake unless you really can pull it off, and I know I can''t - for me, it''d be like I''d attached a big sparkly doorknob to my knuckle - not the most desirable effect!). But I wonder if we like bigger fancies because for some of them, at least asschers, they''re cut deep enough that they look much smaller than the comparably sized RB - so even if it''s a 7 ct. asscher, it looks smaller and more proportional. It seems like a great situation! You get bragging rights ("oh mine is 7 cts") but it LOOKS right on your hand...
2.gif

I don''t know how I feel. I just think as long as it is tasteful and not gaudy then it''s okay.

The only reason why i am not considering 5 caraters is the cost. It''s like in order to see a noticeable difference after a 3 carat i will have to increase size by at least 2 carats or so, and the cost is too high
7.gif

that being said, i think a 5 carats RB is not too big, (i am a size w**** too!) although i think it would look even nicer in an Emerald or Asscher. There''s something very beautiful about these stones when they are in large sizes, yet look so elegant without screaming for attention. Ok maybe a little given the size, but i like the fact that the clean lines and subdued flashes of fire are a nice contrast to the size.

I think I''m in agreement with the majority, I''m a fancy cut nut and although I appreciate the beauty of an RB, its just not me and can look vulgar when its too big, like its just come out of a lucky bag.

BECG - totally agree with Blu''s thread last year, those cushions and asschers were fierce!

I think there''s big then there''s tooooo big!! If i had a huge fancy cut I''d want it to be of a size where although massive, I could wear it every day and enjoy its beauty.

Case in point - Beyonce, Now her ering is amazing but its on the too big to wear category, so what''s the point in that? Why have something that beautiful and expensive that it stays in a locked vault, its what, 18cts? No if she''d gone for something in the 8-12ct category, every day, wear it every day.

............disclaimer: I''d quite happily accept a honker regardless of the caratage going on.

I love to look and admire them, but I can''t imagine owning/wearing a 5+ carat diamond. That just doesn''t fit in with our lifestyle or our circle of friends/family so I would feel a bit odd. I would love to spend the day at a jewelry store trying some huge sparkly diamonds on though
2.gif
Ditto and me too; also if it was in my circle I still wouldn''t (personally). I do think they are beautiful on other people though and fun to see.

I agree. I like to look but wouldn''t wear one myself. I prefer smaller, daintier pieces.

I didn''t reply only b/c the pictures weren''t clear, and I wasn''t able to really see the diamonds. (no offense meant) I would love to see some clearer pics of those rings! I am sure they are gorgeous. And to answer your question, I like big and little rb''s. But bigger doesn''t always mean better IMO.

I felt the same way. The quality of the photos were not that great. I believe if they had been you would have gotten many more comments. How do *I* feel about 5+ ct diamonds...I am not sure I would ever desire or feel comfortable wearing one.

Well, I''ve seen one up-close on a woman''s hand, and quite frankly, while it was impressive for size, it just didn''t look....right. Does that make sense? A 5+ carat stone has to sit too high, and for those of us with smaller hands a 12+ mm stone is too overwhelming for the hand. Not to mention the fact that in my neck of the woods, most people would think it was fake. I wouldn''t want one.

I love big diamonds! I think it all depends on who the person is. I know a girl who wears a 13 carat ring and it fits her perfectly. On me, it probably wouldn''t work as well (As much as I would like it too
emteeth.gif
). I do agree that fancy shapse look better bigger. I think a 4 carat round is the biggest I would go without thinking it looks gaudy.

AS for the pics of the 5carat ring. I was totally excited about seeing it but I couldn''t see it in the pictures. I would LOVE to see clearer shots!!! Then I would of commented for sure!

For me personally, a 5 ct RB would be too big for me. But a 5+ carat Asscher, Cushion or EC, I''ll take all day long. My ideal asscher size is a 4ct and I plan to keep upgrading until I do end up w/ that size
31.gif
Not sure if I''ll ever afford anything larger than a 4 ct asscher but if so, I''ll be on the phone with GOG ASAP!!!

I think 5 cts would be RIDICULOUS on me and I wear a size 8 ring! That being said, I could probably gradually work my way up to it as diamond shirinkage sets in! There are times when I think my 1.71 center stone looks tiny, which is absolutely ridiculous. I go leave it in the safetly deposit box for a week or so to remember my priorities!

according to the basic rule...

you can go up to a 5ct rb if your ring size is 6....4ct if your ring size is 5....6ct if your size is 7 etc,etc well.... you get the picture. for fancies you can go up to your ring size.

Thank you so much for your replies, ladies. Sorry I should have said that I am not worried by the lack of comments on the thread about my friend''s 5ct ring (after all its'' not even mine he he
9.gif
), just really genuinely surprised. I should have guessed that the blurry pictures did not help. But I had still expected many more responses.

Your inputs and comments are very interesting. Please keep them coming, ladies.

I am, for one, totally enamoured with Diamante Blu''s incredible own rings and those on the thread she posted. In fact, I wonder what''s happened with her upgrade project (I hope you''re reading this, D. Blue!?
9.gif
).

It also seems that PS''ers, given a choice, would prefer a larger fancy shaped stone over a RB. Why is that? I *love, love, love* larger EC''s (like Diamond Fan''s incredible 9ct Tiffany''s), I think they''re very elegant. But out of all the shapes, I love RB''s the most, because of the incredible fire that they give out.
Yes. For some reason, larger fancies can be carried off more easily. I don''t know exactly why that is, maybe because most fancies don''t have the sparkle factor a round does, and therefore don''t call as much attention/look ostentatious? That''s just a guess.

As to the original question, I am rather size sensitive, and have an aversion to drawing attention to myself in what I wear. I do not want someone to see my jewelry before they see me. That may be in part to the way I was raised. My mom always wore tasteful attire/jewelry, but you only really noticed it if you looked at her, it wasn''t over obvious. But to each his own, I''m in no way criticising anyone else!

And I didn''t comment either, as I was waiting (and still am) for clearer pics!

sorry for threadjack,

Ellen, today my radiant goes back. she is no longer mine! u say size isn''t ur thing but i did consider for a moment sending her to you....

I think that large stones look gaudy and cringe at the idea of someone spending that much money on a stone. So - I don't like them. Disclaimer: this is my OWN personal taste/opinion and also applies to big mansions, cars, and other things I consider frivolous. And this post is not meant to attack, judge, discredit or disrespect anything or anyone. Just want to make sure.

HI:

I agree with most when referring to preference; most wouldn''t choose to wear larger than a 3 ct. round. Which begs the question, why do rounds have "diminishing returns" in appeal the larger they get?

Having tried on several 5-8 carat fancy shapes, I did not care for the 7-8 carat Asscher (type) cuts and would not wear them. Larger did not seem to add visual "value" for me. Preference.

Absolutely loved the 5 ct + emerald and Assoka (sp) rings. I would have no problem wearing those shapes as they seem to suit my longish/larger fingers. Preference.

Recently tried on a 5 carat oval and it was devine. I was drawn to the "softness" of the cut. It was stunning and did not appear to be "too" much of anything. Again preference.

When I bought my ring--it was after a long search and it just seemed to "speak" to me and that is how it ended up on my finger. Dimensions/carat weight, etc didn''t play a huge role since I did not set out with buying that specific size combo.

Thing is, I really don''t "think" much at all about my ring--I just put it on and wear it. KWIM? It doesn''t occupy my thoughts--unless someone else draws attention to it. (altho I am careful not to smash it about). So when I see other''s rings, I admire them, but have no thoughts as to peoples motivations for choosing the type of ring they did. I guess those are my "feelings".

cheers--Sharon

But, but, it''s a fancy, I might have been able to pull it off. No wait, who cares how big it might have looked on me, I WOULD have pulled it off.
39.gif

*sigh* You must let us know what it''s being replaced with, k?

Gosh, the more I digest this, the sadder I get.
7.gif
But I''m sure you will end up with something else devine that I will drool over....

This thread really made me think.

Being young and not living in a particularly affluent area, I would probably max out personally at about 2cts. Maybe 2.5 cause I have massive fingers
2.gif

I don''t have an ering, and now I am wondering how it will feel at ALL to wear a significant sized diamond (as in, over 10pts) on my hand. I usually wear tiny jewelry out of preference. Oh well, I have a long time to worry about that!

BUT if someone were to hand me or pass down to me a large OEC, OMC or asscher...I would not pass it up! I wouldn''t pass up a large stone at all, just probably would not wear it on a daily basis.

i love them...what''s not to love about diamonds...big or small hehe.

would i wear a 5c on a daily basis? nope...it would not fit my lifestyle at all. 3.5c sure.
31.gif
i''d make that puppy fit.

Did you make that up
3.gif

I would *really* love one!!!
emteeth.gif
Especially an EC in that size.

To tell the truth, they look nice and anyone to have that size is certainly lucky, but once you get over a certain carat size no matter what cut, well, it just looks like costume jewelry to me. Please, no offense to anyone. I probably feel that way because you don't see many people with those size diamonds other than fakes....You know? At least, I don't anyway. Again, that is just my personal opinion with no offense...

Also, I didn't see the thread/photos everyone is speaking of.

I love them all, like many others have said! I also prefer fancies in the larger sizes. For me, a 5 ct just wouldn''t "fit" in my lifestyle, the area I live in, our financial situation
2.gif
and so forth but you better believe I''ll have a 3-3.5 ct antique cushion on my finger at some point in time!

eh, honestly, 5 ct *round brilliant* is too big! Unless it's worn to a special occasion event, like say the Academy Awards, a ring of that size would be too gaudy and looks out of proportion on ones hand.

But, an emerald cut of 5 cts., will more likely look elegant compared to a round. . .

Basically, IMO:

Round Brilliants look better in smaller sizes - less than 1 ct
Emerald Cut and other fancies look better in slightly larger sizes - say 1 - 2 cts.
All stones DO NOT look good in larger than 2 ct sizes for any regular lifestyle, but are fabulous as eye candy when worn for special occasions!

Just to state, in the general sense, I do not think bigger is better regarding anything in life! I am a jewelry minimalist.

Ellen''s comment, "I do not want someone to see my jewelry before they see me" is spot on. From that point you can say that a woman who truely carries herself well, will attract attention and feedback due to her character, not because of her adornments.

Let the woman wear the jewelry, not the jewelry wear her!

Prior to PS, I thought any "big" diamond was fake if I''m being 100% honest (unless on a celebrity). I used to work in a fantasty jewelry store that sold a lot of fake rings but they sparkled. So if I saw one outside of that setting, I immediately assumed it wasn''t real. That was lack of education.

After PS, I''m not so much interested in the size of the stone but the way that it is set. If I see a big stone, I like to take note of whether that person decided to just do solitaire or if they were a little more "brave"

I haven''t posted because I haven''t seen the thread. Would you please post a link?

I wear a size 3 1/2 so I can''t carry off a 5ct even if I had the money but I won''t mind one as a pendant.
9.gif

I truly held back what I was thinking because I was afraid your friend might be reading the posts! I much prefer the size of your rings, Lien! Your rings are large, but they are very tasteful and not over the top. I''ve seen threads on the forum with 3 ct. (each) ear studs which I honestly thought looked absurd! Bigger is not always better!!!

For me personally, I cannot pull off a large stone because of where I live and the people I am around. I wear a 1.6 ct. rb, but I could probably wear a 3 carat emerald cut with baguette sides (just like DFan''s in miniature!). Step cuts are less blingy looking and I think you can go larger with those.

What I think is silly is to see people living in trailers driving a Mercedes, just as it would look pretty silly for me to wear a 5 ct. stone in middle to upper middle class America!!!
