How do you guys *really* feel about 5+ct diamonds?

I can''t process that big a diamond. It''s like distance, when someone tells that the moon is however many miles away, it''s too big a number to really understand.

I love 5carat and larger diamonds. The only thing I don't like about them is that I don't have any.To respond to Dancing Fire's comment:: I wear a size 6 ring. The largest diamond I ever tried on was 20 carats and it looked and felt fine.

I remember the post well. I loved your ring. It looked good on your hand. I liked her ring too, but I would have used it for a paperweight. I think it was the size of the hand vs the size of the stone.

I can tell you why *I* don''t like large rbs--they look boring to me. The arrows or whatever pattern you can identify in the cut are very clear, the symmetry is totally obvious, and that all just makes the diamond lose its magic for me.

Honestly, though, my best friend has a very nice 3 ct rb in her engagement ring, and even at that size it''s kinda "meh". I love rbs at around 1 ct or below, for some reason, though.

The one thing I don''t like about huge stones is when all you can see from a top view of the hand is the stone itself and no band. For some reason, proportions like that look more silly to me with an rb, while fancies can still carry off a bit of elegance even at that size.

5+ carat rounds are not my fav, but 5+carat fancies (cushion or asscher

particularly)... sign me up!
But lets not kid ourselves I sure wouldn't turn one down just bc it was round!

Oh and I missed the original thread... off to look for it

I am wondering what PS''ers really think about larger diamonds, particularly RB''s?

I recently posted about my friend''s 5ct F VS2 stone and the thread received far less comments/ compliments than those I''d received for my own RHR which is a 3.5ct halo''ed pear. In fact, a few PS''ers seem to like/ prefer my ''smaller'' rings, which also include a 3.02ct F VS2 (thank you, he he

3.gif
).

On the other hand, the Celebrity Ring thread is only of the longest running here on PS.

Just wondering how you guys really feel about larger stones? Most of us here, myself included, confess to being size wh*** and yet there seems to be distinct lack of interest for larger stones (unless it seems the wearer is a celebrity).

Is it my imagination?

I realise that everyone is different in their tastes, but generally it seems that most PS''ers would prefer to go for size, and after cut, would sacrifice colour in order to gain in size. And yet, not so many people here seem to be very keen on 5ct diamonds or larger (and I am not talking about costs here but of course I realise that costs definitely come into consideration). Just purely from the point of view of lusting after a *dream* diamond, most PSers'' do not seem to .
For me personally, size is nice, but it''s not impressive enough on its own merit to warrant commentary.

Usually, I feel moved by the way stones look in their settings or how they look in photos, etc. I''m not impressed by the fact that something is a 5 ct. rock just because it''s 5 cts.

With respect to lusting after a dream diamond, I think it''s more a function that everyone''s idea of ''dream'' is different. My dream diamond isn''t a 5-7 ct. round. I''m delighted with the diamond I already have, and if I were to get a ''dream'' diamond for my RH, it would likely be a 3-4 ct. cushing set like Mrs. Salvo''s Daniel K was.

I happen to love RB
30.gif
, they are my favorite cut by far, however, I agree that they don''t look as tantalizing when they are too big. By too big I mean anything over 4 cts...maybe even 3.5. That''s just me though.

I also happen to adore cushions. The bigger they get, the more gorgeous they look...IMO. As for other cuts, I think asschers fall into that same category (the bigger the better)...not so much with emeralds though, not sure why. I do love pears when they are big and flashy and white. Like yours!

I didn''t comment because I didn''t see it...that''s the only reason

Honestly (I know i'll probably catch crap for this, but) I really don't care much for them. I mean, they look nice, all sparkly and whatnot... But when I see them in person, they look fake and/or gaudy. It's just not my personal taste.

ETA- Just read other posts... I think my feelings really go for 5+ ct rounds. Fancy shapes seen to look bertter to me, not so fake. My OBGYN has a freakin golf ball on her finger and the facets are so huge, it looks like a piece of costume jewelery!!

OK, after reading this thread I had to go up and put on my RB [6.89]. If I hadn''t just painted my nails I''d go spelunking and haul my EC out and put it on too [6.39]! LOL!

I used to think that all large RBs looked like doorknobs - then I saw some well cut ones - magnificent stones - big difference - not doorknobby at all. For an RB, I would stop at a diameter that matched the width of my finger [size 4 with a 5.75 knuckle - gotta love the arthritic shanks]. As far as fancy cuts go, I think you can go larger.

I think my sweet spot for an RB is about 10-12 carats whereas a fancy cut [EC or cushion are my favorites] my sweet spot is probably in the 14-16 carat range in a white diamond. In a colored diamond [yellow is my favorite], I could see getting into the low 20''s.

As far as who should be wearing what, I think that people should wear that with which they are comfortable. That seems to increase with age. It also depends on what your environment is.

PS I did not respond to that thread because I couldn''t see the pieces clearly.

I would wear a 5+ct EC or Asscher in a heartbeat, but those cuts are the ones I naturally gravitate toward anyway. I''ve developed an appreciation for ideal-cut RBs during my time on PS, but I''d always prefer a step-cut stone for a ring--pendants are another story.

I think 5+ct stones can look amazing on the right person, in any shape. I''d love to have one someday!

Kittybean -

I have to agree with you. Large step cuts are absolutely amazing when well cut!

according to the basic rule...

you can go up to a 5ct rb if your ring size is 6....4ct if your ring size is 5....6ct if your size is 7 etc,etc well.... you get the picture. for fancies you can go up to your ring size.

Did you make that up

Who cares. I''m off to print it out and show DH! Whooo hoo for me (6.75).

I think I remember posting on your thread; blurry but yummy. If your friend ever wants her ring to see the world - I will happily be a tour guide.
I have no problems wearing that baby everyday.

NOT showing this to DH - finger is a 4!!! LOL!

DiamanteBlu, you had better get out a tub of Haagen Dazs and start eating !

I'm sure with a bit of effort you could work your way up to a size 6.75....

I don''t think the lack of comments indicate that we do not like 5+ carats of gorgeous diamond, just that many of us would personally be overwhelmed by a 5+ stone ourselves.

It isn''t that jewelry of this size isn''t a piece of art, isn''t beautiful, and can''t be admired. It is a sense that it is just too big for the ordinary mere mortal to sport on a daily basis. It seems . . . . too much. And everyone will have a different size in mind that strikes that chord of ''too much'', or a specific point to where a setting seems ''over the top''. Personally speaking, I am far more iinclined to admire a very simple, classic setting for a large stone, simply because I can be put off by a setting that ''does the talking''!

So, yes, I think personal preferences here may tend to run to the 1.5 - 3 carat stone, elegantly set. We feel like we can relate to that size . . . picture it on our fingers. It seems attainable, and therefore all the more fascinating to us.

If I could rock one, yes I would love it. But I can''t , I have tiny hands, Remember when you were a kid and put your hand up to your freind''s hand? I always had the smallest, so it would like HUGE on me. Good thing, cause if I had nice long fingers, I would go bigger. DH says thank god for that. LOL!!!

Another thing, I have never had that diamond shrinkage syndrome that many people here have had. I put my erng on every morning, and think wow...

But to answer your question, I love 5 carat rocks. I have a friend that has a 7 carat, it''s breathtaking. She searched for 2 years to find the one. I must say, it''s gorgeous.

Exactly right. Mere mortals go grocery shopping, do laundry, and pick our kids up from school. I would be embarrassed to wear a huge diamond while shopping for milk. I'd be PARANOID wearing it while pumping gas at the gas station!

So according to DF I can pull off a 6-7 ct? LOL!
37.gif
I can barely pull off my 1.77RB most days. I'm just the most casual person, and I never dress up. I think it comes down to personality in addition to circumstances (our social circles, family, etc.). I just don't like being the spotlight at all. I do think I would adore a 3ct RB or OEC, but seriously, it would never fit in my budget unless we won a lottery, and we don't even play!
9.gif
I have my eyes on retirement these days.

Sometimes I don't comment if when I first see a ring that already has 5+ pages of comments on it. It's just a quirk of mine. I feel like my comment would just get lost. I guess I should make more of an effort?

DF, this rule actually came up in conversation at my jewelers today. BF and I were looking at some rings that we had initially thought were in my sweet spot range (1.8-ish ct.) and decided I could pull off bigger. He referenced DDS! And then said he was afraid that I would be up to 3 cts if he waited too long
3.gif
And of course, I referenced the rule! (and i''m a 3.5 btw)

The saleswoman was pretty amused

you must teach him "the basic rules"

Here is the link to some of my stuff. I don''t think that either of my stones [6.39 EC diamond and 6.89 RB] look ridiculously large [IMHO].

I think it''s all about what your lifestyle is and what your circle of friends have and your hands. I don''t have much real estate on my short fingers so anything over 2 cts looks really silly. In my neck of the woods very few people have anything over .75 ct. If they do, everyone thinks it''s fake
33.gif
. Need to hang out with a more elite crowd I guess. I don''t know anybody who is into jewelry at all. They all are still in their YG ''80''s .5 carat solitaires (no upgrading except for me that I have ever heard of). I am in a wealthy suburb of Boston, so not in some remote country area either. I don''t see anything big in the supermarkets or other stores either. I''m sure in the big city it is very different.

Sure, if I can carry it off. A 5+ ct RB is too big for me, but fancies ...

IRL...the biggest RB i ever seen was on a man''s finger (over 5 ct)
