Important lesson learned

I am so glad you found it! My heart was seriously racing as I read your story, especially because I love that spess.

I would go nuts if that happened to me! I am so glad you found it.

My sapphire came loose once. I took it off as soon as I noticed it was loose and put it away. Turns out the prongs were shaved to thin, and I had to spend some money to have some work done to make the ring more secure.

And than the jeweler mutilated it.....but that is a different lesson

Thanks Indy,
I love that spess too!

LtlF,
Oh No, yeah, I use a good jeweler, which is extremely important. However as good as they are, I won''t let them touch some stones because they are ultrasonic cleaner happy. They put EVERYTHING in the US cleaner after they''ve worked on it. I''m surprised they haven''t ruined tanzanites (or maybe they did). Ugh!

Yes, be careful of too thin prongs. Platinum is much more durable, but it can still bend out of shape.

I''m glad there was a happy ending! Is it bad that I gasped and made this face

and then totally skipped paragraphs to see if you found it? I did go back and read the whole story once I knew tho.

For the love of Lolliondo, get that puppy a custom setting TL. I was heartsick when I read your story. Next time, you might not be so lucky.

Everybody reading this should hold their rings up to their ears and gently tap the shank with your fingernail. A loose stone will rattle.

It actually fits in that setting, but the prongs are the wrong shape. I might have my jeweler do up completely new prongs to fit it properly, and probably thick double prongs. It's actually a very heavy and solid 18K gold setting. Here's a side view, as you can see, the setting is very substantial in size, but the prongs just don't fit the curvature of the tips of the stone. I might do custom too, but we'll see. I have to talk to my jeweler. She actually warned me about the prongs not fitting the stone properly and I should have listened. *sigh*

You should have seen MY face as I was driving in the car as I looked down at an empty setting. I'm lucky I didn't crash the car. Thanks Packrat!

Gosh, so glad this has a happy ending! you should look at the bright side, TL, this spess is meant to stay with YOU!

I am so glad you found it.

I am so happy that you were able to find that orange gum drop! When I lose things I just can''t rest, so I can only imagine how you felt with such a favored pretty lost in the wilderness, if even only for a few days

Now its off to check all my prongs... again...

and i was going to find out where you did your shopping at too. hehehe.."nice little orange spess where are you"

Whoa! What a ride and I''m glad you found it. It really is a one of a kind stone. Double, triple, maybe even fourple prongs for sure

perhaps a bezel is better for this particular stone TL?
I do recall, when I was having BG make my custom sapphire ring, they mentioned a couple times
that some of these precision cut stones are just not suited to prongs - that is why mine are quite heavy / substantial..

glad you found it, and in quite a funny way I must say!

Glad you found it TL, thank goodness for sticky cookies!

I am so happy for you

Wow, this is quite a story, happy to read you found the stone! It is indeed a very valuable lesson and many newbies could benefit from reading this thread. This is why it''s really important to have an experienced jeweller who''ll tell you about possible defects of the setting or the fact that a particular setting is a wrong choice for a chosen stone. Paying a bit more for services of a good jeweller is worth it when you look at what can happen and how much (not just financially) you can lose.

P. S. For those who don''t know - a stone that''s a bit loose in the setting will move around if you put your finger on top of it''s table and try to move it. If you notice this, get it checked ASAP.

Thanks AJJ!
The stone is a very fancy shape, and has lots of details to it on the side, so a bezel would hide all of that. Here''s a photo of it in the gem case (sorry for the glare), and as you can see the shape wouldn''t lend itself well to a bezel, and I think those sides of the stone are very artistically done (thanks to Gene of course).

Oh she''s so beautiful!!

I''m so glad to have her back!

Very good advice Mr. Ma Rae, and my jeweler did warn me (stupid me

I am so glad to hear that the stone was recovered.

Oh TL, what a scare! I''m so glad you have your orange friend back!!! I love your pictures of it too, I don''t know how you do it. I''ve taken hundreds of pictures of mine but I refuse to post them. Now I''m trying with your tips, let''s see what I come up with :)

I am so happy you found it! I loved that stone! Absolutely gorgeous!
One question, though. Was your setting custom-made or from LOGR?

All''s well that ends well, no?

Thanks Charmy, Amber.

Thanks Crasru, the mount is a standard LOGR, no head size customizations.

Thanks MT, what kind of camera do you have? I have the Nikon Coolpix S220, and it''s great at taking photos of orange (not green though, grrrrr!). You have to play with the white balance a bit on mine, but if you have an old model, you might want to upgrade. The newer point and shoots have more pixels and better sensors. Orange is difficult to photgraph. My old camera made orange look browner, but this one really makes the orange in my stones more true to life.

I''m glad you found your beautiful stone!
Oftentimes, you can hear a loose stone rattle if you shake the ring very close to your ear.

Thank you Sky.

My blood pressure started going up as I read....Everyone''s nightmare, losing a beloved stone just going about your everyday business. Thank god you found it. Its a special stone, really pretty. That spessie in my mom''s ammie JKT necklace, its a Loliondo and its color is amazing just like yours (but only a fraction of the size of yours) and I can only imagine how you felt when you knew you had lost the stone. I hope you had a stiff drink!! Or three

Re stones and safety, I asked a cutter who is popular around PS what he thought about prong settings versus bezels and he said:

"I love prong settings! Stones are easily damaged in them (recutting needed) or lost (new sale)."
