Never thought I’d buy an amethyst but I did!

Hi all,

Never owned an amethyst. In terms of colored gems, I’ve only had sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. So this is totally new to me and I just want a fun, right hand ring (not that I need another RHR :)). Hope this one turns out ok. I don’t have it in my hand yet. Thoughts on settings?

I know it’s super bowl hahaa but I’d love to hear your thoughts about this amethyst and what setting I should choose? I have no clue. It’s an Asscher cut.

Very pretty, but are you sure it's an amethyst? It looks pretty blue to me, and as far as I know, "amethyst" only describes purple quartz.

Very pretty. I love the cutting. Do you have a side view to see the depth? By the way, that’s more of a square brilliant cut than an asscher. Asschers have cut corners and a windmill effect. They’re more of step cut.

if you want a more icy look, pick a white metal. If you want to bring out more of the purple, pick rose or yellow gold.

what size is the stone?

I think it would look pretty set with the points facing NSEW, like a kite. The cutting makes it look like a snowflake in that orientation.

It is a very interesting color! I don't think I've ever seen it, though the image makes it difficult to decipher. I can't wait to see it on your hand.

As for setting, I've never set any of my amethyst and don't have any similar cuts. The corners definitely need to be protected. I wore the checkerboard facets off of my gifted ring prior to knowing amethyst isn't a daily stone.

Thank you. They described the stone as a brilliant asscher cut. It’s 9mm. I’m thinking white metal too as I would like an icy look. I guess I’ll see once I get the stone. I’ll take pics of different angles then. Thank you.

Thank you. Why isn’t it a daily stone? Is it soft? I agree about the corners needing to be protected.

They call it

They call it a rose de France amethyst. I don’t like personally like deep purple. This color is more interesting to me.

I'm familiar with rose de France amethyst. I would describe it as a pale lavender pink color. Maybe it's just the photo, but I am seeing your stone as a purplish blue, which is not a naturally occurring color in quartz. Could it be an iolite?

Thanks,@pokerface. It’s described as a rose de France amethyst on the seller’s website. I’ll take pics and post them here once I get it.

What a lovelly stone
im a yellow gold gal but i do like amethyst is white metals

Looking forward to seeing what you do with it

That is a stunning cut and if it is the same lavender-blueish shade as in the photo, unusual even for a Rose de France (I have one myself). A nice addition in the month of the Amethyst!

Thanks, @peacechick. Would love to see a photo of it.

Very pretty. I've never seen an amethyst this shade. The cut really brings out the blue tones in the purple/blue range. Excited to see what you do with it! Are you going to make the ring a solitaire or have some sort of accent stones?

Not sure yet. This is my first venture into buying a loose gemstone. I’ll see what it looks like when it arrives. Thanks!!

That would be an amazing component of a deco ring. All angles and steps. art-deco-style-1-01-carat-square-emerald-cut-diamond-ring-gia-g-si1_1_10-1-11837.jpg

Thanks! I have no clue what I want to do yet. Hopefully, I’d have a better idea when I have it. Should be here on Thursday. I don’t want to spend too much on the setting as it’s relatively an inexpensive stone so I was just thinking a solitaire but then that may be too boring. Funny, that I am not at all interested in Asscher cut diamonds. I have a round cut but I love the way it looks in colored stones.

I got the stone tonight!! I really like it a lot. I love that it’s a light color. Hard to capture the color now as it’s nighttime. Will take pics in the daylight tomorrow.

Happy to hear you really like it so far. Hope you still love it in the morning :D

Since I’m a newbie to colored stones and this was an impulse buy, what do you experts think this goes for? It’s 3.75 carats. I’ve only had rubies, sapphires, and emeralds but I’ve bought those already set. So even those I have no idea what they go for as loose stones. Thanks so much.

Amethyst is a member of the quartz family, so I think it will be fine as a daily stone.

Africa Gems has really good, deep purple amethyst with the most expensive going for around $60/ct. The color of your stone, while very beautiful, is not that of a typical amethyst, so I don't know of any pricing comparables.

Sometimes 'value' is determined by good marketing
Look at brown diamonds for instance
It just takes the right creative vision and a good marketing plan and a less well known or less popular colour sky rockets in value

Uh oh! I paid more than $60/ct for sure.

Very true. Diamonds, in general, for sure. My husband keeps telling me that about diamonds but I don’t care! I still love them hahha. Call me a sucker!
