Can you tell us what this is? Not just a pond, right?

They are called “potholes” or ephemeral pools - they form in the rock and are filled when it rains. Apparently they are also home to tiny ecosystems!

Oh, I wonder if it would be fun to explore.

I never even knew about the ecosystems until I looked it up due to your question :read: I’ve been around these potholes multiple times and have never seen any creatures in them…I’ll definitely look closer next time!

We rescued this little chipmunk from our pool. Poor thing was shivering and in shock, thankfully he's ok now!20230624_113959.jpg

My daughter took this picture of black tailed deer about ten feet away from us as we were walking around Lake Hollywood. With her iPhone.Blacktail Deer at Lake Hollywood.jpg

Here is a photo I took with my phone of Lake Hollywood. I am standing on top of the dam at the bottom end of the lake. It was a nice hike on a paved path to get here. I am not sure how long a hike it is, but I suspect it is a little more than a mile to get to this point and then back again.

Killdeer : "Look, look, I'm injured!"
Me : "Sure you are..."
Killdeer : "Come here, there is nothing and egg(s) to see over there!"
Me : "Egg(s)?! Where? Oh, there!"
