PS Mommy Thread-Newborn to 12 months!

vis, 6 hours is amazing! hooray! re: sleep it makes me feel bad for jane, because she is so much more alert and interactive when she''s had enough sleep. i think i''ve located you on fb, does your name start with a vowel?

mandy, how fun!

*

she went back down from 530-8, this is huge. like i mentioned above, i can deal w/ wake ups, but she seems so much more alert and interactive when she sleeps mire that i want it for her. i pumped an extra 2.5 oz this morning because she didn''t eat as much last night.

dh is in charge tomorrow morning, i have a meeting with my boss. he''s nervous about getting her to nap.

umm i had a huge post and then i went to shower and something happened to it, awesome!!

anyway i was saying VIZ yay for sleep.

that i was obviously a heartless mommy because i don't get that upset hearing J cry...but i think it's because he rarely gets soooo agitated where i know it's for a reason. normally if he's PO'd he gets all red and stiff but it's more funny because it's like he's throwing a tantrum. and most of the time if he wants me to come get him and not sleep he does this little moany cry but it's sooo not urgent. i usually just let him try to work stuff out and then if he escalates then i will go soothe or get him if its time etc.

and ummm lots of other things i can't remember now. oh well...boo. oh that i was sure if i had a #2 it would be WAY diff. so why tempt fate.
41.gif

anyway gotta run as i have to head into the office for a meeting and then i am working out, YES. i am planning to enjoy my last few days at home.

ETA...oh i also said lulu we just put a LS tee and a diaper on the kid and blanket cuz i was like who cares, we are just driving home...hehe. it's not like we had a photo shoot going on. oh and he had a hat. hehhe.

Viz: Yay for the big chunk of sleep! Boo on the crusty ears, poor C. Your daycare should WANT C to nap! I don''t understand letting him get to fussy level, at that point it''s even harder to get them down? That makes no sense.

Kim: Wow, she went back down again? I LOVE that. Piper doesn''t do it as much, and I''m like you, I KNOW she''ll be happier when she sleeps.

MP: I forgot to mention how cute that hat pic was! Yay for Coach!!

CDT: Thanks again for helping me not freak out about our toothless baby.

Sha; Yeah, just size three, at about 17 pounds/25 inches. She''s a pretty short squat baby. How long is Dalila? Which diapers is she wear? Piper was in size 2 for a long time! They started looking like a bikini on her. She hasn''t had a blowout in months, only up the back where it gaps when I feel like it''s too tight and loosen the tabs. She''s never had a leg-hold blowout, and *Crossing fingers* never had issues in the crib or bassinet with leaky diapers. Have you used the swim diapers yet? Piper has some but haven''t used them.

Toa: Hope you''re not pregnant (Unless you want to be!)

Mere: I have no experience with reflux, but I''d say if you''re worried take him in! It will at least help you stop worrying, and the doc may prescribe zantac.

I''m also terrified of baby #2, Piper is so happy all the time that I''d worry the next one will be Stewie Griffin and plot my death.

It''s official, Piper adores squash. LOVES it. Licked the container loves it. Too bad she hates green beans, but I think it''s just the jar/packed green beans, so I''m going to go ahead and steam my own, maybe she''ll like it better. She also literally gobbles down the cereal with breastmilk, so I pump an ounce every morning for that day from the boob she didn''t eat from. So far so good. I am wasting my storage bags, though.

I don''t know if yesterday''s outing traumatized her or not, but she was EXTRA clingy and would cry when I was out of sight. Even when Paul had her! Then, this morning he went to get her like he usually does, and I walked up to them, and she saw me and cried and reached out for me! Usually she doesn''t cry and just kind of plays in his arms. Sad for Daddy!

Crunch time, ladies.
What are we doing for Father''s Day?

So far I have Blu-Ray Avatar that I gave him last week since he had a day off, and I knew he''d buy it if I didn''t give it to him then. I also have a DVD of The ''Burbs (which was impossible to find on its own, so it''s a three pack of that movie, Money Pit (YES) and Dragnet. Eh. I also have a few cards (from me, Piper and Woofie), and that''s it. I was thinking of doing the pics of the baby holding "D" "A" and "D" letters to spell out "DAD" but he also wants a new dufflebag. I dunno.

re: putting them back down to sleep ... J sleeps til about 7:30 or 8am and then i feed him and put him back down hehee. since he doesn''t like to nap then i want to get the sleep while i can and he typically will kind of play with his blankets for a while and then fall asleep for another 1-2 hours so i figure if he likes it then we''ll keep doing it. it allows me to get some stuff done like eat, pump, clean a bit before he is up up for the day. hehe.

Amber, she always goes back down, the huge part is the amount of sleep she got. We''re usually up for about 3 hours during the night, last night she was only up for 1 hour.
PG, I can''t stand to hear Jane cry, and she''s with me all day and night! I hold her a ton, too. This morning while she was sleeping I got in the shower and my husband didn''t know it. He heard her on the monitor fussing but thought I was with her. By the time I got out of the shower she was screaming with tears, we both felt so awful. I won''t forget to tell him he''s in charge again, that''s for sure.

re: father''s day.... he already has his pressie. it makes him sound like he''s 15, but he wanted a ps3. i wanted a dslr. so, we purchased both soon after e''s birth and said that would be our mother''s + father''s day gifts. i plan to pick up a couple of cards. one from me. one from e. i''m actually hoping to get them today as it''s the last day my cousin is here helping with me + the baby. she came in for the week and it''s been wonderful. but, back to the card... i hope to go pick them up while she watches e.

Just a quickie, pretty busy today and tomorrow so I wanted to post a picture since I will be out most of BPF. Micah is currently asleep on his belly, but his face is resting on his hands so he''s not going to last long. If I try to move them he wakes up so I guess he can just cut off some finger circulation for a couple minutes if he''s happy, lol. Silly baby.

Amber, I''m sorry Piper is having a hard time adjusting
7.gif
I REALLY hope Micah doesn''t do this when I go back to work. You have my sympathy!

Oh Viz, poor C. Can you wipe the outside of his ear with saline solution or something? The crust must be so uncomfortable.

Kim, that happens to us all the time - I want to let DH sleep so I try to shower fast, and when I come out Micah is pretty ticked off. DH usually doesn''t let him cry too long without asking if I need help, though, since it wakes him up if the baby gets too vocal. Maybe turn up the monitor when you take a shower?
2.gif

Oh ack - when is Father''s Day? DH got a bunch of computer stuff the past few days that he said would be his gift, but I want to at least get him a card. I always forget what day it is, whoops.

---

Tomorrow I am taking Micah to a work picnic at a park. My supervisor made sure to tell me when it was happening and added that I "must" bring the baby, lol. For those of you that have used sunscreen recently, what kind do you use? I do NOT want him to get burned, so I plan to have most of him covered, but it''s so incredibly hot that I refuse to put him in pants and let him roast like a turkey. I''ll be sure to have a hat on him (if he tolerates it, hah), but I want to make sure his skin doesn''t sear. At least I can sit in the shade somewhere.

MP - We use Nutrogena Pure & Free baby. You aren''t supposed to use chemical sunscreens on babies, just the ones that are physical blockers. There are 2 or 3 that are supposed to be ok, I know Nutrogena is one but I can''t remember the others.

Whoops, forgot my picture! Micah holding his own bottle.

Oh thanks, I had no idea about the chemical ones. I hope I can find some.

MP- So cute! You should check with your pedi, most say don''t put sunscreen on a baby until they are 6 months old. But if you do, needs to be the blockers- the Neutrogena one November mentioned, Mustela and California Baby are all supposed to be okay.

I just realized that everybody talking about how their babies don''t want to hold their own bottles makes this picture look so rude - sorry! FWIW, he only does this occasionally, and only when I open his hands. He tries to hold it with his hands in fists all the time but usually just lets himself go all floppy when he eats hehe.

If I don''t put sunscreen on him (like if I can''t find these ones mentioned or something), how do I keep him from burning?

MP: Our pedi said to keep her out of the sun (In So. Cal, it''s tough, except today) and in the shade, even WITH sunblock. It has to be sunBLOCK, I think, too, right ladies? Target has California Baby sunblock, but I got Aveeno Baby Sunblock as per my pedi''s instructions because of Piper''s super crazy sensitive skin.

just a quick THANKS for the additional info/thoughts on cord banking- interesting about the public/donating option, we'd totally do that.

our hospital tour is tonite, and it's definitely on the question list!

MP - If you can''t find those, I''d put one of the other baby sunscreens on him. I am not a doctor, but I believe that the effects of a sunburn on a baby would be way worse than any potential, 1 in a million negative reaction that may occur with sunscreen.

I have no idea why they say not to put sunscreen on an infant, just thought I would mention it so you could check into it.

mp, the monitor was on, he thought i was with her, didn''t hear the shower running. i need to remember to tell him he''s in charge, he felt bad too.

micah is so cute, the bottle is as big as the strong little guy!

Our daycare trains the babies to hold their own bottles almost from the beginning. I think Claire is pretty good at it, but I don''t see her take a bottle too often, of course.

Kim, sorry about the monitor mix-up!

I picked up Claire early from daycare because she was running a low-grade fever (100.6) and vomited a couple of times (one time because DH let her eat paper which caused her to gag). She''s ok, probably has a virus. Her temp was 101.7 at the doctor''s, but her strep, urine, and blood tests were ok. It wasn''t fun getting all the tests done and waiting for her to pee in the bag. Poor girl! She seems to be feeling better now that the baby ibuprofen has kicked in (I couldn''t find baby acetaminophen because of that recall).

Add Jacks to the list of babies who show no interest in holding his bottle! He actually can for a bit now (dh has him do it the rare occasions he feeds him), but I like holding it for him and not making a mess and making sure he eats continuously, plus I think it will be easier to stop with the bottle if it''s not something he ever really has "control" of. He does just fine with any kind of sippy now, so I''m not worried about it.

This is a post I saved from the "other" site on sunblock...found it very helpful!!!
It seems everyday someone asks about sunscreen. So I thought I would give my 2 cents since well skin is my profession. I am a dermatology Nurse Practitioner and have been practicing dermatology for 12 years thus I see children and adults everyday in regards to skin, skin cancer etc and this includes being in the know in regards to the safety of sunscreen.

First let me start by saying there is a big difference between Sunscreen and Sunblock

Suncreen is 100% NOT safe for infants under 6 months old. Honestly I would never put sunscreen on my child at any age Period. Sunscreen is a chemical blocker that use simply gets absorbed into the top of the skin in a chemical thus reflecting the suns rays and not allowing them to penetrate. These chemicals however are not safe for infants.

Sunblock is a Physical sunblocker which is 100% safe from the day your child is born up to the very elderly. Sunblock is a product that literally creates a shield on the top of your skin and get absorbed and will block out the harmful rays.

Many companies Mislabel their products calling themselves sunscreen and sunblock interchangebly. You need to look for the active ingredient.

Avobenzont; Homosalate; Octisalate, Octocrylene and Oxybenzone, : ARE CHEMICAL BLOCKERS aka Sunscreen. NEVER use this on your child this is what pediatricians do not want you to use on your children.

Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as the active ingredients is a PHYSICAL BLOCKER and this is absolutely safe for your child at birth. As noted with the American Academy of Dermatology. THe active ingredients are actually pretty much the same as diaper rash paste.

The key is putting it on 30 minutes before going outside. Physical blockers need time to get absorbed into the top layers of the skin. ALso you must reapply every 2 hours of continuous sun exposure. Long sleeve shirts, wide brim hats and sunglasses are also recommended. They sell bathing suit coverups and bathing suits with a UV protection.

Recommended Sunblocks by the AAD are as Follows:

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin

Neutrogena Pure and Free

Blue Lizard

California Baby

That is pretty much it and its a short list. Most of the issue with sunscreen and babies origionally came from PABA however that is rarely if ever used. The use of chemical sunscreens nowadays can cause your child to develop a contact allergy.

ETA: I am currently a SAHM for the next year or two so I actually have not worked in derm since my daughter was born.

Sorry for the long post, I just found it so informative and helpful!

We figured out that Jacks was definitely suffering from his reflux because I had left the prilosec out overnight a while ago. We got him a new batch, and it''s like having a new baby again.

My dh is not being sentimental at ALL for father''s day...I shot some ideas by him, but he said, can you just buy me x instead (i honestly forget what x is...I''ll have to re-ask him, I was annoyed at the time that he didn''t want anything sentimental). We''ll be getting ready to move right around then, so I guess it''s good that I won''t have to plan something big.

And has ps 2.0 up for anyone? It''s definitely not for me!

Definitely not pregnant everyone.

Evan tries to hold his bottle...it just doesn''t work..haha.

For Father''s Day (THe 20th I believe!)...I''m going to update my husband''s D A D picture. I gave him one for Christmas when Evan was about 6 weeks old.....

Should I cheer or say I''m sorry? Either way I''m glad you know now - that wait is terrible.

Thanks for all the info on sunblock everyone. I''m going to stop at Wal-Mart tomorrow and see if I can find some. I''ll keep the baby covered but I want to be extra sure he doesn''t burn, I''d feel terrible if he did. Maybe I will get lucky and it will be cloudy and help block at least some of those rays.

Sabine- thanks for the info and clarification on sunscreen vs. sunblock. We've been using Johnson's Baby Daily Face & Body Lotion with SPF 40, and I started to freak because it's labeled as being"sunscreen". After reading the active ingredients, it looks like we're okay because the active ingredients are Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.

Phew.
10.gif

Sabine- Yes, thanks, that article is what I was thinking of. Btw, the California Baby is labeled "sunscreen" but the active ingredient is titanium dioxide (or whatever).

What do we think about this? It''s a swaddle/baby sack, but lets the baby move their arms. It looks creepy but I bet it works.

http://www.ergopouch.com.au/swaddle.html

China We use a similar swaddler, the woombie, and Oliver loves it. He is on the verge of outgrowing his miracle blanket so we tried the woombie out of desperation (O won''t fall asleep unless he''s swaddled and has broken out of every blanket we have.) He even fusses less when we put him in because he can move his arms a little bit, unlike with the miracle blanket. http://www.thewoombie.com/

Ah, didn''t know what the Woombie was. Thanks Layney! My O is out of all swaddles, so don''t need it, but just thought it looked interesting.

The last two weeks have been a little crazy for me - I started working again, though only part time, and I''m having trouble being away from Oliver. In particular, the pumping is driving me crazy. I have no office, so I''m stuck pumping in washroom stalls and it grosses me out. I mostly just dump the milk for safety issues and, since I have a severe low milk supply, it breaks my heart to dump it. Is anyone else in the same position? What solutions have you found?

On a happier note, O had his 3 month check up earlier this week and is now 14lbs 13oz and 26.5" long. DH is convinced that he will be a giant. O also took his shots like a champ this time...no more fussing and sleepless nights.

Aveeno baby sunblock is also recommended by the AAP. :)

Layney how many times a day do you pump? Can you just keep the milk from the first session if you do multiples? It always bothers me to think I can''t sanitize in between pumps but I know lots of people don''t. Thankfully I just will have to pump 1x a day at work, BUT I wish I had a bigger milk supply.

Does anyone know if I start pumping now like add another pump in... will milk start producing at that time if I start it now even though J is 4 months? Right now I pump at 7 or 8am (depending on schedule) and do like a power pumping session for 45 min; then I pump at 2 or 3pm (again schedule) and then at 10pm before bed. I used to get like 20oz but now I only get like 13oz (after Hawaii) and have not been able to get my supply up...BOO. J totally rejects the boob now (after Hawaii) so it''s useless to try to put him on to help stimulate anything. I leave the pump on for about 5 min after pumping to try to say HEY GIVE ME MORE but so far nothing has happened. While I am really happy to be getting something for pumping...I know my body was creating more before Hawaii. I also know supply tends to want to decrease at 3-4 months. SO if I add a pump in at lets say 5pm... will my body eventually create more milk to be had at that session? If so, how long might it take, 1-2 weeks? On the flip side mentally I think, well what if that gets me eventually like 3-4oz... is it really worth it. I hate pumping more and I also hate having to clean all the stuff afterwards. And the last thing I will want to do when coming home from work is immediately pump. ANYWAY...thoughts, suggestions?

I also feel like my pump is decreasing in strength since I always end up with it on the strongest setting after about 10 min and it feels like nothing is happening. Could my motor be burning out?

I have to see if I have a pic for this week, I know I don''t have any good ones on my iPhone but maybe on the camera.

Today for lunch I''m meeting my 2 mommy friends with babes around J''s age...fun!!

Also, we have a wee little toothie peeking out of bottom left. It''s just two little white nubs but it broke through the gum and I see another white nub under the skin in the bottom middle. Potentially why he''s been more fussy and drooly this week. Thankfully knock on wood, his sleep does not seem disturbed (yet?).

MP that pic with M holding the bottle is so cute!!

re: Sunblocks..I just bought Neutrogena Baby at Nordstrom Rack the other day. I guess my confession should be that I always take J out in the shade without sunblock, and sometimes he gets weakish sun on his arm or leg for like 5 or 10 min but he never gets any color. I almost feel like I''d rather him just get the sun for a few minutes than slather a big thing of block on an arm or leg, esp on his hand where he puts it in his mouth. What do you guys do for their hands?

second confession: J looks way more like Greg than me and I secretly (not so secretly in close circle of friends and fam!) wish he had more of my skin tone because I feel like I look like the nanny, not his Mom!
39.gif

and third confession, I posted this in the Hangout PS thread but I am really afraid in a year I won''t care about all the horrible birth stuff and how miserable I was being pregnant and will want to try for #2. I don''t want a 2nd child, I don''t want a 2 child household or the stresses with it, or the financial burden, esp where we live, SO expensive. Also we''d have to move as our house is too small for 2. I will def be a SAHM then and I don''t know that''s what I''d want, ETC. But I already feel so wistful looking at J and realizing he is growing so fast. I almost feel like in a year I won''t CARE about anything practical and will just want another one. I''d be 36 or 37. And it freaks me the F out. DAMN YOU MATERNAL HORMONES, YOU SUCK.
