Rhapsody in Bespoke Gems Blues!!!

Oh my word. I *really* want to break down and ask about an asscher.

Acinom,

As far as I can make out from Doug's e-mail, the remaining roughs have been spoken for.

DK :))

Pyramid: great specs. Congrats! Any ideas on how you will set it?

Packrat: 8-) 8-) 8-)

DK: the remaining roughs went quickly then. How will you set your large oval?

Saw this message from Doug on his Instagram page:

Yay! A teaser pic of the sibling stones. Pyramid and DK: your stones look great. The supernova cut is a great choice.

Doug will get in touch with all of you about your stone.

Message from doug:
Here is a teaser pic... one big happy family. Pretty special... I've never cut this many gems from the one stone... the most I had done before was three. Here's a family of six.

Ricezo and others who might be interested:
Doug actually has one more piece of rough left that might cut another oval or rectangle cushion maybe around 8.5x12-ish or something... so potentially seven siblings. And there is another smaller offcut that might also do an 8-9mm trillion. So eight siblings!

Excellent! Where's dear Ricezo? Doug also has 2 pieces left for 7 to 8mm asschers. Are you interested Ricezo?

Thanks Lovinggems! Still in talks with Doug re a potential stone for my sister - will let you know if it eventuates! I will definitely ask Doug to cut me an asscher topaz but I'm not in any rush as I'd love to set a few stones first!

I just had a pair of light blue Jeff Davies topaz set for my boyfriend's mum - I think these are a great idea for anyone in the market for earrings to match their bespoke gems! Will post in the catch all thread. :wavey:

Acinom,

My setting inspirations:

Need to have the stone in hand to establish finger cover before deciding on a setting.

How about you and everyone else? Please share your setting ideas and inspirations.

DK

Great setting inspirations DK! Thanks for sharing. I especially love the third inspiration ring
It's a good idea to wait until you have the stone in hand and feel and see the dimensions.

My Asscher will be set in a straight french cut band. DK will set the ring. I complety trust him to set colored stones:

As mentioned earlier in the thread I am setting my oval in a 3 stone with diamonds.

I said previously my stone would be set with 2 10 point diamonds but it was actually 15;point diamonds and I have asked for a high setting in yellow gold with white gold around diamonds.

Ok Ricezo, I am looking forward to your future projects with Doug.

DK my favourite is the last inspiration photo.

Acinom love your choice!

Pyramid 3 stone ring is one my favourite design!

I would really love to have a mokume ring, but I am not sure if my 10mm topaz is too big, my finger size is 4.5. Also I would like to have a more delicate looking basket. Another consideration is my 7 to 8mm baby Asschers will be set with a pair of baroque white South sea pearls, so it will look pretty dressy.

Any suggestions?

Here're my inspiration photos.

Wow--incredible how these all came out-- no worries about who gets the "nicer" one - they are all great!

Pyramid: a three stone setting is a very good and classic choice for your beautiful stone

lovinggems: I love that Mokume style. Can you contact the company to investigate what the options are with your large stone and tiny ring size? Do they have a setting where the band is smaller than the width of the stone?

Lilmosun: thank you!!

Mochiko: regarding your question on comparable carat weight and different depths, Doug answered the following:
Re the 807/806 gems and differences in size/weight... yes, it might seem a little odd. Even though they are close in L/W with #806 being a fraction smaller yet deeper but the same weight, there are tiny variations in the stones that most likely would account for these little differences. What springs to mind is that there are probably variations in the heights of the pavilion and crown step tiers. I can't really measure these with the sort of accuracy that would be required but expect perhaps that maybe the first set of steps coming off the girdle on one of the gems might be a fraction deeper/longer then the other gem. Whilst perhaps on #806 the steps closer to the culet might be a little deeper/longer. Even though those culet steps might be a fraction longer they would have less volume then what the girdle steps would. Basically it is probably all due to very fine variations in the depth/height of the step tiers on the crown and pavilion.

If anyone is still interested:
There is one more piece left that is still available. It will cut around an 8.5x12mm oval or rectangle cushion style gem.

Could someone please get the last piece pronto so that all the siblings stay within the PS family?

DK :))

Whaaat? Excited to hear your plans Pyramid.
How will you set the extra stone if you decide to get it. Will it be a pendant?

Not sure, I have not heard back to see if I am first person to ask for it yet.

+1 pyramid.

I'm going to wait for that sudden jolt of inspiration before setting my topaz. Doug mentioned he will be cutting the smaller pair of asschers this week! :appl:

Fess up please, who has bagged the last available rough, as it is not me?!

Mochiko good luck! I think nowadays hot pinks and reds surpassed my love of greens.

I am getting another stone from Doug from the natural blue topaz mother ship. It will be an oval somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5 carats he said. I got a choice of two cuts he thought would work and have chosen the omni. He is hoping to cut it this week. I am going to ask for it to be set in a gold ring on its own at medium height.

Congrats Pyramid! I am so looking forward to admire the result.
Do you mean that the stone will be set in a ring via Doug? Or were you referring to your own jeweller to set the stone.

The omni seems to be a beautiful design.

Thanks DK and Acinom. I am waiting to see if Alistair Kelsey can set this one too. He is a jeweller recommended by Doug. I thought to just get the stone but then thought it would never be set. I have a trillion peridot I have had loose for about 10 years which I want to put in a pendant. There is only 1 jeweller near me and they don't really do customers own stones although they may do.

That's great Pyramid. I think you'll be the first one to set it. I can't wait to see the design and the completed ring.
:appl:

Acinom, just wanted to know what your thoughts were on the depths of the 11mm Asschers. I'm unsure about how I want to set mine as I'm realizing how deep the stone actually is,it might impact what kind of setting would work (eg sidestones or no sidestones, halo or solitaire)

Hi Mochiko: good question...
Personally I would not consider to halo it as the height will be even more apparant with the halo to my eyes.
I have my mind set on a solitaire with stones in the shank. I will ask for a cathedral as it visually reduces the height a bit, compared to a band with head? I will have french cut stones in the shank.
I agree that setting a deep stone is a bigger challenge compared to a stone with average depth.

Sounds good Pyramid! I love Alistairs work on his FB. I am sure he will create a beautiful jewelry piece for you.
Looking forward to admire your new oval :wavey:

Mochiko how was the gem fair?

My stones are on their way from Australia to the US. Yay! They will each go their sepsrate way: the round electric blue to David and the Asscher to Victor.

One of the sibling stones has become available. It's one of the Asschers. Hopefully it stays within the PS family!
Here are the specs:
#808, Natural Blue Topaz, Asscher Cut, 10.9x10.9x8.88mm, 8.15ct
Contact Doug if you are interested.
