Roe v. Wade.

This country is going to hell in a handbasket all because apathetic people wouldn't vote for the smart lady and the evil orange baboon was elected.

I have no wish to live under a theocracy, but that is exactly where we're headed.

It would certainly be very useful right now if certain important persons were struck dead. Would change the course of history.

Pox to them. I hope they drop dead.

I couldn't agree more, and I have literally never wished death on anyone. But six of the Supreme Court justices could kick the bucket now and I'd be thrilled.

I’m so angry I could spit nails and literally feel sick over this.

After everything we have learned these past few weeks I truly believe the country I knew and loved is dead.

We all should have seen this coming in 2016.

(CNN)Now that the Supreme Court has given the green light for lawmakers to prohibit abortion, several states, most of them Republican-led, have taken quick steps to do so. In at least seven states, state officials say that abortion bans can now be enforced.
Three states -- Kentucky, Louisiana and South Dakota -- have so-called "trigger bans" that went into effect automatically with the Supreme Court's reversal Friday of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that had established a constitutional right to an abortion. Ten other states have trigger bans with implementation mechanisms that occur after a set period or after a step taken by a state government entity.
Among the trigger-ban states in the latter category, Missouri has already made the move required to implement its ban on abortion, with state Attorney General Eric Schmitt announcing Friday that he had taken the step of certification laid out by Missouri law.
Oklahoma, which had recently put in place a law banning most abortions, has also taken the step of implementing its trigger ban, according to the state attorney general's office. Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge also certified the state's trigger ban, allowing it take effect on Friday, Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced.

In Texas, where the trigger ban is to be implemented on the 30th day after the Supreme Court issues its judgment (a court move that will happen in the coming weeks), Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced that local prosecutors may now begin enforcing an abortion ban passed by the state before the Roe ruling.
Other states have prohibitions on abortion that had been blocked by courts that had cited Roe's guarantee of a right to abortion. Those states may act quickly to have those court orders lifted so that those restrictions can go into effect. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey referenced a court order that had halted the state's 2019 abortion ban and said in a statement that Alabama "will immediately ask the court to strike down any legal barriers to enforcing this law."

Protests are growing across the country. it’s being reported the White House is concerned about violence against women protestors by fringe groups. As women we aren’t safe anywhere.

I have been voting since 1982.
Back then, there was a lever in the ballot booth where you could vote straight party.
That lever is now gone, but I still vote straight party.
I will never vote outside my party, ever.

I just saw on the news some teenage girls jumping up and down and hugging each other, elated about today's ruling.
Let's see how happy they are when their period is late after being in the back seat with that pimple faced boy from school.......

Or when a friend dies from a botch abortion at age 16, or they get raped in college and are forced to carry the baby to term and have to drop out to take care of it because there are no programs and protections for mothers.... the list goes on....

“Abortion is health care, and no matter who you are or where you come from, Oregon doesn’t turn away anyone seeking health care. Period. Let me be clear: You cannot ban abortion, you can only ban safe abortions — and this disgraceful Supreme Court decision will undoubtedly put many people’s lives at risk, in addition to stripping away a constitutional right that disproportionately affects women and has been settled law for most of our lifetimes,” said Governor Kate Brown. “For all the Americans today feeling scared, angry and disappointed — for everyone who needs an abortion and does not know where they can access safe reproductive health care –– please know you are not alone, and the fight is not over.”

“The United States as we know it was founded on the principle of inalienable rights, this idea that some rights are so sacrosanct not even a government can take them away. Of course, this country’s founding fathers were only thinking of wealthy white men when they codified this principle, but still, it’s a nice idea, that there are some freedoms that cannot be taken away.

What this ..snip... shows us is that even in this day and age, the rights of women are not inalienable. Our rights can be and are, with alarming regularity, stripped away.”

From Bloomberg evening briefing:

"This week’s Jan. 6 hearings illustrated the potentially historic legal jeopardy faced by Donald Trump given revelations of how far he and his aides allegedly went to stay in power. But Trump’s legacy, whatever the result of investigations into the insurrection, has arguably been secured by his three picks for the US Supreme Court, who together made possible a giant leap to the right on two of the most divisive issues facing an already riven nation: guns and abortion.

Neil Gorsuch took his seat in 2017 only after Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, then Majority Leader, refused for an unprecedented eight months to let the Senate consider President Barack Obama’s nominee. McConnell said at the time that the nomination should be held in abeyance since it was an election year. Four years later, McConnell jettisoned his rule and rushed through the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett after the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, confirming her just days before Trump lost to Joe Biden. In between, Brett Kavanaugh testified before the Senate that he considered Roe v. Wade settled precedent. This week, the three justices were integral to the court (through opinions written by fellow Republican-appointees Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito) handing a huge victory to the gun industry and, in the Dobbs decision today, effectively eliminating abortion access for tens of millions of women.

As protests and celebrations erupted in front of the Supreme Court over the demise of the 50-year-old right, abortion opponents were being urged by former Vice President Mike Pence to seek a national ban. President Joe Biden attacked the court ruling, and the Justice Department said it will protect the right of women in GOP-controlled jurisdictions to seek abortions out-of-state. But the legal reasoning behind the Dobbs opinion might augur a broader rollback of federal rights in the future. A reading of the concurrence by Thomas reveals his advocacy for a widespread review of long-settled constitutional doctrine—a review he argues is required given today’s ruling. At risk, Bloomberg Opinion writers warn, could be federal protections for same sex marriage and even contraception.

As for the court itself, some legal observers contend a new day has dawned, one in which a right-wing supermajority no longer seeks consensus or to acknowledge popular opinion, but instead follows political dogma. “It is no exaggeration to say that the Dobbs decision,” Noah Feldman writes in Bloomberg Opinion, “is an act of institutional suicide for the Supreme Court.” —David E. Rovella

I was at a rally tonight for women's reproductive rights, in our Purple state. The advice was -- pick a candidate, in your state's legislature, or at the federal level, in a challenged seat, and campaign for that one person. Talk to everyone you know about that person. Knock on doors for that person. Each of us needs to adopt a candidate. It is not enough to just vote, or just give money.

Note: I have been canvassing since 2012, and while we did not manage to prevent our state going for T in 2016, I can say that we have turned our county from pure red to pure blue in the past 8 years, and our county was in the national news in 2020 for its strong D vote. Some said it was evidence of election fraud... but no, it was evidence of us organizing.

I used to revere this constitution. But if this is how we’re going to interpret it, I say we need a new one. That piece of paper isn’t doing right by us in 2022.

All this to say why can’t we the people insist on an Amendment to our constitution that covers the things like womens right to choose, gay marriage, these are things that the founding fathers didn’t include.

I think it's hopeless at this point. We are too divided, too partisan to undertake such a task. Saying more may violate the no political topic rule so I'll leave you with this link which does a good job of explaining our inability to codify Roe v Wade. https://19thnews.org/2022/01/congress-codify-abortion-roe/

this has been the lead story all morning on the radio news
wow

Note: were weren't even able to codify the Equal Rights Amendment...

Shhhhhh, someone might tattle to SCOTUS, they have room on their docket after today....

I couldn't agree more, and I have literally never wished death on anyone. But six of the Supreme Court justices could kick the bucket now and I'd be thrilled.

its not my place to pass judgment on another countries judicial system
but if i can just say
these positions need an upper age limit and a limit of how long a judge can serve

It is a sad day for America. When I was a kid I truly believed in the American dream, bought it whole heartedly. It is very disillusioning to know that the minority rules now. Freedom? The joke's on us. The US is a patriarchal dystopia in which old white men are hell bent on putting us in our place. This is not about unborn lives, religion, or morality. That is a lie we are told so that the oppressors can feel superior. Some may even believe that lie themselves. But make no mistake, this is about control.

An American woman who was denied a request for abortion in Malta after suffering the symptoms of a miscarriage, has been allowed to travel to Spain to terminate her pregnancy there, her lawyer said on Thursday.

Andrea Prudente, 38, who is 16 weeks pregnant, was on holiday in Malta with her partner, Jay Weeldreyer, when she started to miscarry a week ago and was admitted to hospital with severe bleeding.

Amid fears for Prudente’s health, the couple requested an abortion when told that the pregnancy was no longer viable. However, the request was refused since Malta does not allow abortion under any circumstances.

Doctors had refused to certify her as fit to travel, but arrangements have since been made through the couple’s travel insurance to enable her to fly to the Spanish island of Mallorca.

“The insurance company has finalised arrangements for them to be airlifted to Mallorca. Andrea is signing herself out since Maltese medical advice is for her to stay under observation,” the couple’s lawyer, Lara Dimitrijevic, told Reuters.

“Andrea is going through a lot psychologically. But here in Malta, doctors’ hands are tied since according to law they would be committing a crime by terminating the pregnancy,” she said.

The couple are due to leave by air ambulance on Thursday.

Malta is the only EU country that has a total ban on abortion. The health ministry has not commented on the case.

This is a weird interpretation of what an abortion is- if you have a miscarriage, by definition the fetus is dead or dying. The woman will either deliver it naturally or have medication/surgery to assist. That’s NOT an abortion! Leaving the fetus in situ if it doesn’t deliver leaves the woman at risk of bleeding, infection and probably death. I can’t believe this scenario is covered by abortion law. I wonder if it’s doctors being frightened? I’m really appalled in this scenario and in the US that sensible medical voices are not being heard, loudly above all the cr** that is spouted.

What a sad day for so many American women…

What my local news is reporting:

And

Note: they weren't even able to codify the Equal Rights Amendment...

You took the words right out of my mouth

C. Thomas has already stated that precedents re: same sex marriage, contraception, sodomy, need to be reexamined.

Alito's assertions were undercut by a concurrence by Thomas, who explicitly called for the court to reconsider its rulings striking down state restrictions on contraceptives, state sodomy bans and state prohibitions on same-sex marriage.
"Because any substantive due process decision is 'demonstrably erroneous,'" Thomas wrote, "we have a duty to 'correct the error' established in those precedents."
The liberal dissenters used Thomas' concurrence to go after Alito's assurances that the court was not putting those precedents at risks by overturning Roe.

I find it interesting that he wants to eliminate all these rights derived from the same amendment that gave him the right to marry his wife. Wasn’t Loving v. Virginia decided based on the 14th Amendment?

Yes, this. Women - and men - who are outraged over this need to channel that energy into getting out the vote for candidates who can make a difference. This SC decision was decades in the making. A lot of people worked very hard to get us to this day, where women have lost the right to bodily autonomy. We need to work just as hard. As President Obama said, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. "
