thats not a earliy version of the tiara. GD Maria let it made in the 1890's from which is belived from an unkown russian jeweller (Cartier later cleaned the jewels and made 3 copies of it, which is said was the workmaster of the original one). It was altered for this costume ball - similar to the Devenshire ball when the Girls of great britian tiara was set into a smaler frame to form the smaller crown.

never heard that those are Catherines II pearls

So you did correct me :) Thanks for the additional information. So, the tiara was originally in it's current state and was only "made smaller" for a costume ball, right? So, the diamond riddon on top and the diamond band are what keeps the circles together.

just a correction of myself. rereading the hidden treasures of the romanows, p122, the tiara was made in the 1870's

here a pic to show what could be done with a smaller frame (Devenshire Ball, GoGBaI tiara)

and

a young crown princess of denmark with the pendant (sorry for the bad quality)

A very young Princess Victoria wearing...???Have you seen this Swedish tiara before? Please...anyone? Thank you ahead! :-)
Although when I look at it close..it looks like a lace to me now,and so maybe it's just a "make-believe" tiara to make some children happy?

for me it's a faked one. neigher the outfit fits for tiara time nor the tiara itself looks real.

I'm sorry but the photo of Crown Princess Victoria with the small pearl and diamond tiara is computer-generated (i.e. Photoshopped). It was originally poseted on TheRoyalForums and, if I remeber correctly, has also been posted here before.

About removing posts - If you want to remove a post of your own, you can click on Delete. If you want to remove a post by another poser (or an old post of yours), you'll have to click on Report concern button and give a reason why you think the post should be deleated.

Hope I helped!

Thanks for the photo, Alexander. Strange that such a nice jewel is not worn more often.

About the Vladimir tiara - That's quite interesting info, Alexander! Thanks! The Royal Collection says the tiara was made in the 1890s (when Maria Pavlovna was near 40), but if indeed it was manufactured in the 1870s maybe it was a wedding present to Herzogin Marie von Mecklenburg-Schwerin, as she married Grand Duke Valdimir in 1974. Do you know in which year was the costme ball whan she wore the tiara as a tight circle?

Happy 77th birthday to HRH The Duchess of Kent (or as she prefers Katherine Kent)! May she have a wonderful day and many more such happy occasions in the future. I also hope she won't disappoint us and will be in the Abbey in late April :)

I also read the RC text, and the 1870's were also new for me. but I think Clark is a reliable source.so let us say between 1870's and 1890's. in 1909 Cartier cleanded it.
I'm not sure. I know I got this pic also in one book. i'm searching on this matter.

does anyone have a better photo of the tiara the Duchess of Kent is wearing in the previous post?

It's really interessting where some large letters, high gloss, magazines search for such faked photos. What me let think of "wounderful" pics with the Queen's head on Di's body etc.

Here is the royal crown of Sweden. According to "Crown Jewels of Europe" by Prince Michael of Greece, this crown was made by Eric XIV around 1560.

Or the photoshopped picture of Camilla wearing the Cambridge Lover's Knot...

Princess Alexandra of Kent wears her "swirl" tiara in this picture, just like Grand Duchess Vladimir,
who was the original lucky owner. Is there more known about it? :-)

The lady in the second photo is Princess Nicholas of Greece and Denmark, nee Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia. She was the daughter of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna and the grandmother of Princess Alexandra of Kent.
As far as I remeber (and perhaps someone will correct me), the diamond and pearl snake necklace/tiara was a wedding present from Maria Pavlovna to her daughter and didn't come from her own collection. It was sold by Princess Marina's children after her death.
Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent has also worn it, most notably at the Silver Wedding celebrations of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernahrd.

Today HRH Prince William of Wales and his fiancee Miss Catherine Middleton baptized a life boat in Wales. This is the first official engagement Catherine is undertaking as a future member of the Royal Family.
I'm quite happy to see that for the first time her hair is pulled back. I think she looks even better like that. Lets hope she won't disappoint us at the wedding :)
But lets talk about jewels - the Princess-to-be wore a nice pair earrings that look real to me.

I read in the Munn book that the earrings originally were part of the necklace. Two segments were removed from the necklace to make the earrings.

I agree, her hair looked great. It did seem that her eye makeup was a little heavier than usual. So are the earrings a topaz? Or citrine?

Did you notice that she poured the champagne instead of the traditional smashing the bottle against it? It was an inflatable boat.

Inflatable boat + broken glass = slightly disasterous first official appearance when the boat deflates

Thta's true. and it could be worn as tiara or necklace. very bad that it was sold and disappeared from light.

It is a shame, Alexander. I hope it hasn't been broken up. It's very very pretty & surprisingly modern -- could have been designed yesterday, from its style. I got a kick out of the old photo of P. Alexandra dancing w/the African man in his beautiful clothing -- her expression looks like he just tromped on her sore feet & she's trying not to howl. :D Been there, myself from time to time!

Kate looked lovely & did a good job in her first outing. Interesting they included her in this ceremony -- don't think they did that before, did they, before marriage? Hope her "lessons in royalty" make it more enjoyable for her! She seems to be a natural.
