The LIW Small Talk Thread

Hi, Bia! Congrats on the interview!

DH interned for Smith Barney a few years ago and he really enjoyed it. What kind of position is it, if you don''t mind me asking? He really liked his coworkers in the area he was working. And I know it helped him get his current position because it looked great on his resume! Good luck on the interview!

haha you''re right of course =)

I won''t need to spend much more. My stone is .69 ct and i don''t want to go over the .80 ct mark. Call me crazy, but i like dainty rings hehehe

Wait... do i need to buy a stone that''s worth twice as much in an upgrade???
8.gif
Depends on your jewlers upgrade policy I guess.

Wooo! Today I can getting my first car and my first peice of really good and expensive diamond jewlery! .....I won''t be alowed either untill my birthday but still!
9.gif

It feels good, I had all this extra car shopping and customs stress I really don''t need when I''m this busy with uni, and now I can just FOCUS on getting things done for Monday. Yay for no more car shopping!!!!

The package is here (somewhat molested by NZ customs but still in good condition) but BF said I can''t open it till he is home....in over 4 hours! Torture!

Bia - just wanted to say *hugs** and congrats on the interview!! you''ll rock it!
Corporate american CAN be a good thing, as long as you are doing a job you love (or, grow to love ;P )

Bia, congrats on the interview!

Have you guys tried talking about what you need to feel loved in a relationship? Some friends of ours were going through a rocky spell and it turned out that they each were expecting different things to feel loved. Basically, he needed to hear that she loved and appreciated him vs. her needing him to spend more quality time with her. They credited a book called "The Five Love Languages" with saving their marriage, but I think it''s more just a general thing to be aware of. I think that we all tend to express love in the ways that we want to receive it rather than the ways our partners need to.

As for the passion stuff, we were having a small issue with that a little while ago and one thing that REALLY helped was slowing stuff down. I know that sounds totally backwards, but taking things back a step and doing things like keeping all our clothes on and just making out for a while made it feel sort of dangerous/off limits and that incited passion in and of itself. (Sorry if that''s totally tmi!) Sometimes I think that sex becomes so run of the mill that it''s not exciting anymore, so saying that you are NOT going to go there makes it exciting again if that makes sense.

freke! i have a couple Q''s for you

when you did your own shoes (with all the crystals) - where did you get that many crystals, and two, what brand of dye do you recommend?

I want to do something similar like your shoes, but champange-y colored.
Sorry Jcar! I just now saw this.

I bought a whole bunch of the crystals--I think 6-7 bags of various sized crystals or so. It could use more obviously, but I need to keep taking a break from that, and get back into it later.

Dye--no idea. I''d go to a shoe repair place and see what they can do.

Also, there is a shoe by Nina, called "Chrys" that is a short heel, with crystals just on the vamp, and it comes in "gold" which really looks champagne-y to me. You might check that out if you''re not going for height. I bought a pair in silver to wear under my dress for walking around Vegas.

oooh thanks for the idea!!
these are pretty dang cute!! to bad they are not another 2" taller. but then again, these would probably be ALOT more comfy for the rest of the night, no?

They''d be more comfy for sure! And they''re so cute! But I do love those SW you want too....

Tough call!

Have you ever felt that maybe your SO knows you better than you know yourself? I hit that point with BF last night. I was asking him a question, and his answer was incredibly accurate and I could recognize that but I never would have come up with it on my own. Crazy.

Also, we talked about moving in together at some point. With this coming (potential) move, we''ve been talking about at what point we''re willing to do distance, at at what point we''d prefer to just move in together. Personally, if it came down to distance or living together, I choose living together. I''m already starting to want to - I miss coming home to him. I''m getting to the point where I just want to be with him, and it''ll be worth having to be less slovenly (lol, I''m the messy one) and to have to give up half of my closet. I feel like I''ve proved what I want to prove to myself about making it on my own, and so at some point in the next year or two I''d be pretty happy to move in with him. He said basically the same thing, and that right now what''s really holding him back from wanting to move in together is that our schedules are SO different that he feels it''s better for both of us to not live together. But from the discussion last night, it sounds like we''re on the same page. We''re willing to get separate places this time, but if it comes down to something like me working around DC and him going to school in Richmond, we''d rather split the difference and live halfway in between than be apart.

I''m a happy girl right now.

Okay, got a call from HR - my interview is either Wednesday or Friday of next week!

The lady I spoke to said it was for HR Representative, but the Director I spoke to yesterday said it was for HR Coordinator....not sure if that means anything.

Ladies, what to wear?!

Thanks, ladies. I think it won''t happen with this move (well, whenever the heck that happens), though there''s a small chance. Most likely it''ll be in about a year/year and a half.

I don''t know...I''m being slowly pulled to the idea of living together and getting married and all that jazz. It''s starting to sound good and fun, and not totally terrifying.
23.gif

Bia, I''d say conservative is the name of the game - dark suit, light shirt with maybe a little bit of interest (white herringbone or an interesting collar or something like that), classic shoes and understated jewelry. I think a lot of interviewing is showing you know how to play the game, and at a big company like that I''d say it''s better to err on the conservative side.

Absolutely!

I vote for a suit. I''ve heard skirt suit is "better" than pantsuit for whatever reason. I guess they still like to see women in skirts?

Anywho... definitely conservative! If you dont have a suit already, it''s time!

NOPE, nothing appropriate. I''m fairly certain Morgan Stanley is business casual but yea, for the interview I definitely need to rock a suit.
That means, start throwing some ideas out immediately, if not sooner.

I''m getting so nervous

Awww! I know you''ll do great, B! Even if you don''t get the job, every interview you take helps you to improve on the next one. They''d be fools not to hire you anyway.

Whenever I go into an interview, I try to think of it as an interview for BOTH of us. It''s a way to see if you''re a good fit for the company, you''re interviewing them too, yanno? So make sure to have questions prepared... it shows a good interest in the company and the position.

I know the Limited is a great place to shop for suits on a budget. They had some cute stuff online!

Yup! And ROCK the heels! Remember, for whatever reason people associate height with competence and intelligence, so the taller you appear, the more competent and intelligent you appear - and the pay generally reflects those attitudes. Weird, and unfair, but totally unconcious. So heels for Bia!

That''s one place that the three of us should be glad we''re tall. We can''t rock those heels any other time, so may as well take advantage in the interview.
11.gif

Also, make sure said heels are either new, or in really good condition. Apparently scuffed shoes are a big no-no. Interviewing is weird.

Add another vote to weird.

Skirt suits are good. Professional yet feminine. Avoid showing too much skin though. Knee length skirt and buttoned up blouse. You don''t want the interviewer distracted (if it is a man) or threatened/jealous (if it is a woman).
Strange balancing act. Have to show enough but not too much of everything. Confident but not above everyone. Competent but not over-qualified. Feminine but not in a negative way.

I like a basic black skirt suit. The skirt and jacket can be paired with different shirts for a whole new outfit. (not that you ever wear it again after you get the job....)

Hmmmm...I might go to Banana Rep and see what they got. The Limited - not sure if we have one of those here...

Heels...hmmm...so 5''10 isn''t tall enough? LOL

I''m seriously nervous and it''s annoying me! They called me for a reason right?

LOL! It''s actually that the majority of my friends right now are in serious relationships and all living together/engaged/married. I can see what it''s like, and it''s NICE. Yes, I like coming home to a quiet house. But I like the idea of coming home to BF even more (as long as I get quiet time after a rough day).

To give you an idea of how weird I am, currently getting married sounds less scary than turning 25.

Give me a good reason to take a personal day in the middle of the week...

so that it doesn''t look like I''m interviewing for a job!

Oh boy....

You need to go to IKEA and don''t want to deal with weekend crowds? Need to get work done around the house? FMIL will be passing through town and you need to get wedding planning done?

WEDDING PLANNING! You need a personal day because you need to look at venues/meet with caterers/etc. Then just say, "Oh, nothing really worked for us. What a waste.

"

Express has really cute suits too. You can get jacket and pants for $170 or so.
