Work stuff. The clients want nearly impossible stuff this week.

Back from Planned Parenthood.

With how long that took I may as well have had a pelvic exam while I was there.

I forgot I had no more refills on my BC, and it takes roughly 80 months to get an appt with my obgyn, so I just took an appt at PP so I could get a BC script on short notice.

Lucky you.

Actually, it is well written but very politically correct.

I''ve got 500 words that can arguably be called a literary analysis but I need at least 800. Did I mention it is due in 6 hours? (draft is due for review)

Funny you should mention...

I was doing a search for more info on her and hoping for some inspiration to get me going on my paper. Talk about shock. -- sitting at my desk with nice big pictures of a really um... busty woman showing up as my boss walks by.

I''ll do yours if you''ll do mine...

800-1200 word literary analysis of Linda Hogan''s book. Plenty of quotations and smoothe transitions between paragraphs.

Is a Linda Hogan book really capable of being deeply analyzed?

Not to judge a book by its author... but...

Back to the hotel! Mini''s teeth are perfect thanks to her anal MOTHER!

LP - Um, Sunny and I are going to taking you to tea! And when I say "tea" I mean to a local watering hole to get hammered drunk.

Is it worth trying to fill this out with another 300 words or should I just start from scratch?

In her memoir, The Woman Who Watches Over the World, Linda Hogan faces the difficult conflict that occurs when a person is a part of one society but living in a land that is dominated by another society.

Hogan says that she comes “From people who lived in a time when dances, with their central fire, were outlawed, gatherings suspect, languages forbidden,” (Hogan p. 123). The children and grandchildren of these people are left with little but memories of the way life had been -- like it is with the eagles who “when the wind blew, would remember wholeness and flight… the phantom memory, the remembered life of before,” (Hogan p. 201).

As time passes, these children and grandchildren are able to bring back some of the traditions that had been common. This is difficult with few who remember how it used to be. Small groups organize evenings of traditional dance in an effort to keep traditions alive but it isn’t the same. Hogan traveled with a friend to attend one of these dances, but arrived after everyone was gone. These events that had been central parts of life got shifted to make room for the activities that are expected by the dominant society. Moving away to go to a good school, to get a good degree, is more important than living at home and learning the subtle ways of the old traditions. Children are taught English so that they can succeed in the world around them. Hogan says, “It’s not that we have lost the old ways and intelligences, but that we are lost from them. They are always here, patient, waiting for our return to their beauty, their integrity, their reverence for life. Until we do, we will have restless spirits.” (Hogan p. 14, 15)

Integrating the old ways with the new is a difficult balancing act that can easily shift too far in either direction. Hogan spent much of her life trying to find a balance between the traditions of her people and the things she needed to be successful in the larger society around her. Even with all of the challenges she faced, she succeeded. Another of her novels, Mean Spirit, was a finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize. Linda Henderson Hogan was inducted into the Chickasaw Nation Hall of Fame in 2007 because “She has played a prominent role in the development of contemporary Native American poetry and prose,” (Chickasaw.net). Even with all of this success Hogan still sees her work with animals, specifically her horses and the birds, as the rewarding part of her life, “I love my writing but it is not the same as saving lives, not the same as being in the world every day. But in my writing, I try to make a feel for that natural world, to use words to make wholeness out of what’s been broken,” (Hogan interview with Colatosti).
