Jewish holiday celebrating the giving of the Torah. It is a bit more than that, but that is a good summary.
We light candles on both nights (2 day holiday) and eat dairy (this is just a custom). There is also a service we attend.
This is supposed to be a non-working holiday but you can cook (not true of all Yom Tov). I'd love to take the days off of work/school to fully observe the holiday, but I have an exam on one of them and neither of us are in a position to take days off of work right now
This is one of my favorite holidays of the year -- services are less rigorous (NOT all day things), it is a celebration of sorts, and I love dairy. In our home, the "traditional" dairy dessert we serve is CHEESECAKE. Not just any cheesecake. This is my homemade 5 packages of cream cheese, 8 eggs, heavy cream, super dense cheesecake. We only have cheesecake this one time each year. (B gets super sick from this much dairy so he can only manage about 1/2 a slice.... the rest of the 10" cheesecake is left to me )
