The LIW Small Talk Thread

If you slow caramalize the garlic in a bit of olive oil, it does something to the garlic. Cooking it this way really reduces the impact it has on my stomach (I could only handle a little before starting to cook it this way) and it also prevents the garlic smell (that awful garlic odor that follows you everywhere for days after eating garlic) so you can enjoy the flavor and not offend the people you work with!

A light garlic meal for us is usually about 2 heads. Usually I use somewhere between 3-5 heads per dinner. Garlicy dinners get 6-8 heads :lickout:

mmmm roasted garlic! But woah nelly on that combination of foods! If you had issues I don't even want to THINK about what it was like to share a bed with Bruce!

Jessie, I apologize for my delivery in what I'm about to say. TP can vouch for me, I'm blunt and harsh but I have good intentions. On what planet are breakfast sausage and hot dogs considered OK diet foods? I understand that you're trying to lose weight, but I don't see how restricting your food and then only eating crap when you DO eat is enacting positive change in your life/health. I'm not on board with the restricting either, but if you're going to do it, do yourself a favor and focus on healthy foods. 1000 calories of healthy food is a lot more food and a lot more filling than 1000 calories worth of crap.

In addition, eating such a limited amount of calories and limited variety of nutritious foods is going to counteract the good you're doing with working out. Muscles need protein to get stronger and strong muscles burn fat at a higher rate than cardio alone. What you're doing it counterproductive and unhealthy.

I'll vouch --- Very blunt, sometimes comes across as harsh BUT always with good intentions and, more often than not, right

HH -- What is your exercise routine now? If I'm remembering correctly, you had a pretty intense daily workout routine.

ETA: The thing that really did me in was the peppers. I didn't really think about it until after eating like this, but I know that I have problems if we eat peppers (bell peppers even!) too many days in a row. I hadn't even thought about the possibilities.... I really should count myself lucky that B doesn't have a problem with peppers and prefers to have rice with his taco instead of beans --- oh the possibilities :knockout:

Errr.....chasing Aidan around? This is where I really need to make improvements. I tried working out in the morning after I came back to work but with Aidan not sleeping well I gave up on it so I could have an hour of uninterrupted sleep in the morning. But he's sleeping now so I could (and should) start back at the gym. I usually do a combo of cardio for 45 minutes to an hour (usually split between walking on the tradmill on an incline, jogging on the treadmill, or the hill program on the recumbent bike), light weights and abs.

HH-i understand, its okay, your not the only blunt person i know. While I agree about filing up on bad items, i am not. Having 2 sausage low fat turkey links in the morning, is much better compared to bacon. All beef hot dogs minus the bread is better than a huge hamburger. Also, i fill up mostly on fruits and veggies. While i know Chicken is better for you, i choose to change things up with all beef hotdogs and lean pork lion, since i do not eat fish. Thank you for the concern, and its okay to be blunt.

TOO- did you ever find that recipe for the Hummus? I would be interested in trying it again, maybe i just bought a bad thing of it. Or maybe it was the brand. Who Knows??So whats for your lunch??

Mind if I join back in, all this exercise/food talk hopefully will get me back into the motivation wagon because I realllllyyy need it!

I know there's a forum for it, but I seem to like this one since there's so much less focus on just the weight stuff.

Anyways, I get to be a MOH in Sept. and I was originally hoping to lose 25lbs by then, but time moves on and it's summer and all I seem to do is eat whatever is in front of my face. Plus all these festivals, happy hours, events, all involve food and it's so hard to resist! It was a TON easier to lose when it was during the fall or after the new year! Right now I'd be happy with 15lbs by Sept...

So how exactly do you roast the garlic? I've had the whole clove before at restaurants and I love it, but I was never quite sure how to do it at home. I'd imagine it's not too many cals either but knowing me, I'd probably end up spreading it on crackers! Plus I'd have to give some to the bf...and oi. Not sure if I can handle it afterwards :)

Anyways, it's about lunch time here, but I'm not really hungry yet. Guess I'll be waiting for a little longer!

Welcome SC....its just a friendly place around here. LoL....Congrats on being MOH too!

For me, i need to lose for my trip, but also for my health. Just one day at a time, and small goals. LoL....thats what i keep telling myself.

Anyone have any ideas on a health sweet treat?? Every now and than a piece of fruit doesnt cut it. LoL...

HH -- Chasing Aiden is a great workout! I get the need for sleep and even "just an hour" can make such a huge difference. Do you have room at home for either the treadmill or a recumbant bike? The drive to the gym was long enough that I can complete a 20 minute program in the time it would have taken to just drive to the gym.

Jessie -- I love to use turkey sausage in stuff. If you've got a Whole Foods around, you can have them make a turkey breast bulk sausage for you while you shop. (so it is nothing but turkey breast and spices). You still get the great sausage spicing, but none of the preservative gunk they put in so many of the ones you just buy off the shelf. (I haven't forgotten the hummus, I just have some not-so-good recipes mixed in and want to post the good one)

Hi SC :wavey:
You can do 15 pounds by September! The festivals really do make it hard around here :nono: .... and now with the sun finally here (sort of  ) I really want to just sit in the sun and eat icecream.

Garlic roasting --
Peel garlic cloves (less smoooshed work better)
Add a splash of olive oil (really enough to just coat the garlic) to your pan.
Let sit over low heat, stirring every few minutes until yellowish/brownish (don't actually brown or it gets chewy) and is super soft. (depending on pan, burner, and how much I'm doing this takes 20 - 40 minutes)

I take it out of the pan and then add it to the dish when it comes time to simmer or go in the oven.

You can also do this in the oven, but the results aren't as consistant (under roasted some days, over other) -- cut whole garlic head in half, poor a bit of olive oil on each half (over the cut cloves), put back together, wrap in foil (2 layer is best or it might leak/smoke), stick in low temp oven (I've done 250-400 degrees and the lower really works best) for several hours.

Try slicing your strawberries and mixing with a fresh vanilla bean (scrape the insides out and use in strawberries, toss outer bit into sugar canister to make vanilla sugar!) and a small sprinkle of sugar. After it sits for an hour or two it is really yummy.

You could also try a chocolate drizzle. High quality DARK chocolate (in small amounts) is actually good for you. When I do a drizzle (and I do mean JUST a drizzle), I melt a 50/50 mix of 70% Scharfenberger & 99% Sharfenberger.

Thanks Too, I will try that with the strawberries, and vanilla sugar, that sounds soo yummy. We have whole foods here, BUT its sooo far from my house, the food would spoil by the time i got it home( Think 45 minutes drive, not including the walk to the car( its in a shopping center, and its like a 10 minute walk to the whole foods). Maybe i can pack some ice in an ice chest and try that. Thanks, its such a good idea, i didnt even know they could do that.

So i found a reciepe for Hummus, minus the tahini stuff, im going to try it right now. I dont have a food processors so this will be interesting.

O and did i mention i HATE summer, espesically here. Its HOTTER than hell outside right now, and summer just started the other day. Its like Hello Summer.....ahhhhh, attack of 110 right now. I feel like summer attacks the city like its an enemy in battle, its awful. Yesturday it was 111 as our high and at 10 at night it was 96 degree. Sorry for the whine.

Food processor is pretty important for this.

This is a hummus recipe without tahini. I haven't tried this one (never done without tahini), but it looks pretty reasonable. hummus

Maybe we can combine our weather and form the perfect day? High today was supposed to be like 63.
50% chance of rain and "partly cloudy"... The radio weather guy couldn't even say it with a straight face (he actually giggled!) because it was cold (50s) and raining (pretty hard) when he read the report

Okay, ii found a food processor that was missing. YAY.....so my question how smooth is it suppose to be??

I just made some, and it taste AMAZING, but not completely smooth...hmmmmm??

Yes, lets combine weather, its wayyy too hot here, and way too chilly there.

OMG....why didnt someone ever tell me Hummus is SOOO GOOD.

Shouldn't have chunks of chickpea, but there is definitely a bit of a texture to it (store bought are actually pretty close to the right consistancy). You should be able to put it on a spoon and have it stay if you turn it over so it should be thick. If it is too lumpy and too thick, you can add a bit more liquid (lemon juice or water is my usual choice) and blend some more.

Hummus takes practice. You really sort of play around until you get what tastes good and is what you like.

My biggest weather complaint here isn't even the rain/clouds. This switching from 80 degrees during the day to 63 is hard (especially since it goes back and forth every few days or so..... 60, 76, 64, 80, 76, 63...). I'm pretty much cold all of the time to the point my feet cramp and fingers go almost numb.

There are these thin sandwich wraps you can get to fill with hummus and veggies.... Mmmmmm!!!

Thanks for the Tips on Hummus, it cost a total of 2 bucks to make, and 4 bucks to buy and the one you buy is gross.

I am so sorry about your weather and your fingers, that must be awful. I dont know which i would prefer, cold or HOT...hmmm, im going with cold.

I just got done working out....its called TurboFire, and let me tell you, im so tired while doing it, but after 30 minutes of the Fire 30 class, im sweating like i ran, my heart is still pumping , and i have wayyy wayy wayy too much engery. Off to shower, and to do some crunches with my weight ball.

I might have to look into that hummus recipe you posted as well. I love the stuff too, but sometimes it's tough to have at work because it makes your breath a little :knockout:

15lb should definately be doable by Sept, but with as much as I'm eating and drinking, it sure is going to be tough! We have a huge beer festival coming up the weekend before the 4th and I always go overboard there. I'm a huge beer drinker, which doesn't help the waistline!

So Jessie - you should check out www.hungry-girl.com She has a ton of recipes and will do swaps for high cal foods and offer lower cal substitutions. She includes a ton of different dessert options too - you'd be amazing how you can swap certain ingredients around and still have your cake taste like cake! When I'm on full diet mode, I swap to a very low calorie diet and if I'm doing it right, eliminate all alcohol, bread and processed sugar. I'll allow myself a cheat day once a week usually but that website has been a life saver when it comes to me trying to find food with decent substance and under 500cal/serving. I'm trying to decide how lazy I want to be tonight and whether i'll just cook some fish and veggies up, or actually try to compile a meal. There's a spin and weight class at my gym tonight and I haven't been to one of their classes in a long time, but I'm trying to work up my motivation to go to one of them tonight. We'll see how that goes.

Thanks SC for that website, ill have to take a look at it for the weekend. Normall my cheat day is sunday, its the first day off for C, so we will do something like breakfast or lunch. Good luck with the spin class, let us know how it goes, i just got done with my turbofire workout, and somedays i get so tired but its the best i have found to do at home, just long enough.

O man, im not a beer drinker, but the fourth will be hard...I so want a drink or two

Um...sorry Jessie but a nitrate, sodium, and fat laden hot dog is not nearly as nutritious as a hamburger. A hamburger (homemade mind you, not from MCDs or somewhere else) has no preservatives, etc and is an awesome source of protein and iron. If you make it with lean beef you have less fat and calories. Put both options in front of a nutritionist and they'll pick the ground beef time and time again.

There's a difference between crash dieting and healthy dieting and one of the big characteristics of crash dieting is eating crap that you perceive to be OK because it has less calories than the other options (such as "diet" foods like snackwells or lean cuisine). Healthy dieting is characterized by eating nutritious, whole foods and practicing portion control. Yes, you might lose some weight, but it's all going to pile back on eventually.

But it's OK, if you like eating hot dogs then eat hot dogs, just don't claim to be "eating healthy" when you do it.

Soooo workout last night didn't go as planned. Actually it didn't even go at all! I ended up getting a big project at the end of the night with work and had to stay late and was so stressed out by the time I got home, I fell asleep on the couch. Then bf had a long day at work too and didn't get home until 8. We were too lazy to cook up anything so we decided to go out to eat. Fortunetely this morning I was down .2 but I could only imagine what the scale would say if I actually kept to plan. Hopefully I'll do better tonight. I need to get gas so I'll make a trip to Costco and we've been eating these chicken sausages with grilled sweet peppers and that's been really good. This weekend I have a brunch with a bunch of ladies on Sunday and then a mani/pedi with a group where there will be apps and drinks - oi. I better make sure I at least hit the gym 1 or 2 of those days!

But i do eat healthy. Im sorry but filling up on Veggies before each meal, or snack and eating fruit and veggies all day is healthy eating. Also, giving up soda and drinking only sun tea and water is a hell of a lot healthier than diet sodas. I listed one meal on here as a lunch, i didnt list everything that i might consume during the day, so please dont think that i dont make healthy choices for the food i eat. Im not crash dieting, i have been making healthy changes of the past couple of months.

SC- its okay you didnt make it to the gym, just try as hard as you can to hit it during the weekend. Also, Mani/pedi's sound soo good. I just had to get a fill on my nails, and i wanted a pedi sooo bad, but im trying to save every nickel andmy vacation with dime possible for C. Although he has paid for everything, i still need money to pay for food and things while down there.

That's great then!

My e-mail got broken into. EVERYONE that I have sent or received e-mails from since 2003 just got sent an e-mail about sexual dysfunction (actually there were about 10 different messages that got sent, not sure if everyone got all or what)..... including several Rabbi's, my former pastor (before conversion), family, teachers....

I still can't tell exactly what is compromised. It may be limited to just my personal e-mail, but it looks like my work e-mail was gotten too. I've got super deep scans running on my work computer and need to do my other computers as well. Since I'm not sure the extent of the mess, I called the tech department of the company and had ALL of my access shut down so no client information can be gotten. So that leaves me sitting here. Scan's been going for 2 hours now with lots to go. Changed all passwords but I've got to do that again after all of the scans show the computers are clean.

What a mess. The worst part is that I don't know what is and isn't "safe" or what information they may have gotten or if they just spoofed my e-mail but didn't access info or???????

OMG, i am so sorry Too- besides it being embarrassing, its slightly scary that may have goteen a lot of information. Please let me know what you find out. Are you going to have to change all your email accounts??

I'd rather not change my personal account since I've had the same one since 2003 and a lot of different things go there. I may have to, but that would be a PITA.

My work e-mail is a different thing all together. After all of the security scans are done I have to call the home office tech guys back and see what they want to do. It is pretty easy to switch that one since I don't have business cards or anything. Since they've got an archive of all messages, it wouldn't take much to do a seamless switch.

The rest of my stuff will need at least new passwords and they may decide to set up all new accounts for me.

One bit of good news is that so far my bank information seems to be secure.

Oh.... and we got a "collections call" last night claiming to be collecting on a credit card for B. Very obviously fraudulent. The disturbing thing there was that they actually had super personal information.

As soon as our computers are secured, I have to pull both of our credit reports (from each of the 3 agencies) and make sure there isn't something more going on.

O TOO-i am so sorry, hopefully there isnt anything on your credit report. Its so scary how much information people can steal. I hope allt hing will be okay for you, and i hope they dont have you bank account stuff.

I'm actually not too worried about my bank stuff. There isn't anything in there for them to get and I've got it set up to not allow overdrafting so they really couldn't do anything with it. I've also gotten pretty good at getting bills and stuff switched over to a new account since my bank information was taken three times in the last two years

My big worry is what other stuff they may have gotten. I have super sensitive client information on my computer and work e-mail. There is lots of security in place to prevent people from getting hold of this, but it would be awful if someone managed to get hold of it

I can take care of the mess if all they've got is my information (or even mine and B's), but I really really really really don't want anything bad to happen to the clients. My job is to make sure they get what they need and make things as easy and safe as possible for them.

So I've had enough practice for 30DS (pushups, situps, exercise bicycle) that I think I might survive actually doing the program.

I need to do the first level this afternoon and then again Saturday and Sunday. The first few days were the worst last time and I have to be able to stand on Monday (chemistry starts Mon ;( )

Too, so sorry that you're having to go through all that stuff! I recently had one of my bank accounts compromised but fortunetely BoA stopped it before too much damage occurred and reversed the charges. One thing I would suggest you do though, is put out a fraud alert (it's free). Basically it puts an alert out to credit agencies where any credit that is attempted to be generated in your name gets either refused or they have to go through extra measures in order to get approval (I forget which). You should be able to google how to do this but it was advised when I had my issues. Even though your accounts you have now might be safe, if you think the person has personal information it could be likely that they have enough to start new ones. Do you have any idea who might have done this?
