Thanks for the lesson, DS.
P.S. Since I don''t drink, what do I call my halo-ed ring-to-be? Just a ring, right?

Virgin Cocktail Ring or VCR for short....

Skippy, I''ll take the Lavender and Smoky Quartz.

I have a cocktail ring (or two if my haloed ering counts)! And I''d LOVE a Pom-tini to go with it!!!!

Hmm...I don''t have a cocktail ring, but I do have cocktails in the fridge!

Quoting Sharon 101: "But Im at a stage in my life that I wanted some outrageousness. I dont need symbolism and meaning from my er!!!! I have 3 kids and all my symbolism is in them. My family is what I have to show the world that I have love and am loved etc. My rings are now just for my frivilous fun & enjoyment and to me they have no meaning other than that perhaps Im a big show off, or that I really love diamonds, or that Im very lucky to be able to afford what I have, or that I chose size over quality!!!!!!!" I love this quote!!!!

And I want a cocktail ring!!! For my next birthday- which ends in a zero. Although I am a little sad to realize that I am now at an age where a large cocktail ring is considered acceptable. This was a great thread. Thank you DS!!!

As it happens, I have a cocktail ring, too
2.gif
It belonged to my GM. It is a large oval opal surrounded by diamonds and covers a entire knuckle. I feel quite glamorous wearing this ring. I should be holding a long cigarette holder and wearing bright red lipstick, while drinking a martini

Iluvcarats! I opted for a haloed engagement ring because
I wanted an old-fashioned look, though that probably isn't
the most common or strongest reason for using a halo. I grew
up in a country where a comment about someone's e-ring looking
like a cocktail ring was definitely a 'looking-down-the-nose'
statement, but it was also common for women to either have no
e-ring, or very small ones, so a larger ring was very unusual
and stood out.

Maybe 'cocktail' would be used with less negative intention in
America, where larger e-rings don't tend to attract negative but
positive attention? Given this I think the term might only
relate to an aspect of the styling of your ring (the scalloped edge
is a feature that might echo a cocktail ring). I think your ring
is an uncommon beauty for the same reason, and cocktail rings
rarely held such high quality diamonds either!

All that said, I would be miffed if the term was used about my own,
even though I love it and chose it with my husband. These negative
connotations are standard to me at least. Sorry for the essay

the king, I beg to differ on your comment about larger erings attracting positive attention as opposed to negative attention. I think there is definitely such a thing as over the top large, but that depends on the size of a person''s fingers/hands. Something that''s cartoonish on tiny hands might look modest on larger hands. It''s all relative. I personally am not one to look at a big honker and think it''s fantastic simply because of its size. To me, it''s all about quality and taste.

As for the cocktail ring debate, I agree with Green 100%. Well said woman.

Good on you too, Pandora.

In my world, a "cocktail ring" is a non-solitaire and assymetric style which is worn as a fancy adornment. It is differentiated from symmetrical "dinner rings" which are longer down the length of the finger and from "Princess rings" which go long-wise across the finger.
The Rubelleite ring at the top of the thread would be called a "cluster ring" since it is a row of diamonds surrounding a center which could either be diamond or colored gem. "Basket rings" tend to be domed and roundish. "Harem rings" are composed of multiple, loosely attached rows of gemstone or diamond set narrow bands which go across the finger like multiple wedding bands.

Differ away, Surfgirl!

I''m not saying that everyone
in America is impervious to size considerations or
whathaveyou, but there is a general trend for bigger
to be better in the States. I''m not sure anyone can
argue with that on a general basis. Ultimately my
point is that if ''cocktail'' is used where e-rings are
smaller its negative value (relating to size, flashiness,
lack of proportion etc.) is more likely to ''be the point''
-- in the U.S. it''s likely to be a more subtle evaluation
I think. That''s not to say the statement here falls into
the subtle camp -- but food for thought for Iluvarats
maybe anyway, and a show of non-dismissive support.

Whoa! That's enlightening! I didn't know halo rings are also called cluster rings in industry terminology. Well then, I'll sign right up for a cluster, please!

In fact, I'll have 2 clusters!

Okay, I think everyone who comes to the big get-together has to wear/bring one cocktail ring if they have one, just for fun!
9.gif
What better place to wear one than LV!

I think this is one of the best threads! So interesting the history involved. I REALLY need a cocktail ring now. LOL! I have an 11 x 11 concave garnet I could set as cocktail ring. It was going to be a pendant but... hmm... DS you've got me thinking!! I also have a LARGE (don't know how big-- larger than 11 x 11 though) citrine I just got (also was going to be a pendant).

I don''t mean to rehash this luvcarats issue, I know this thread is not about her but I just wanted to say a few words to her. I apologize to those who might be thinking... WHY THE HECK is lesco still talking about this.... I have a point I promise!

Iluvcarats, I''m sorry you are still somewhat uneasy about what was said about your engagement ring. I personally don''t think anyone here tried to rob meaning out of your engagement ring or anything like that. I have asked a question or two (or a million) here from time to time and I have appreciated the honesty - I know sometimes you hear what you don''t want to hear - That''s the negative side to asking for an honest opinion. PS will be a very boring place if we all have the same opinions or points of view. Right?

Also, I remember you receiving a lot of compliments on your ring. So, take the opinions as a whole and flaunt that beauty.

Thank you DS for the info. and for the record, I don''t see anything negative about the term ''cocktail ring'' even if it is associated with an engagement ring. These days anything goes in terms of e-rings. It''s all about finding a piece of jewelery that compliments you and your taste/style.

I don''t know how to post more than one quote at a time, so I am choosing this one because it made such sense to me.

I am definitely a "glass half empty" kind of person. I am not saying this is good. It is something that I need to keep reminding myself of, and in this case I send thanks to lesco. My mind walked right past Tiffany''s and into Claire''s - and I took the word cocktail as an insult. To me cocktail meant TACKY. (now I know better) I wasn''t thinking of the word in the sense of being just "big", rather it had a very negative connotation to me. As Green With Envy pointed out, it is just semantics. I still love my ring, (I did however change the band), and to answer my own question, yes, it is too big for my finger, or my finger is too small for the ring, but I love it anyway. I have gotten a couple "gumball machine ring" comments and HUGE comments but so what. So I whole heartedly apologize to you all for tarnishing the flavor of the forum.

This was a good reminder for me.
I need to savor every last drop in the (cocktail) glass.

I heart the old skool jewelry rules, especially when it means I get prizes for being older. Finally a bonus to go with the wrinkles!

So if you aren''t supposed to wear diamonds before 6 pm, then what about your ering? Was that the exception? And was this for all diamonds or just above a certain size? What''s ok to wear during the day?

I almost feel like we should have a thread just to archive all these "rules". It''d be fun to read through the different customs from the eras and geographies.

Hmm. Drinking. In Vegas at big GTG. With the PSers. Oh man. NO ONE better bring a video camera. I can just see us all on You-tube the day after. Cocktail rings flashing and listing while we walk. Oy!

I love champagne too. May I have a glass?

Ugh... I feel like I am one of the people not being named here, but took offense to a cocktail comment. I did call someone out for posting a pic of my ring only a few days after I had received it, in a thread about someone wanting a RHR/Cocktail ring. To clarify... It did bother me some, only bc it was so new to me, and it IS my engagement ring. What bothered me more is that the pic was posted without giving me credit and considering the thread was still in the first two pages of the forum, it wasn''t difficult to figure out who it belonged to.
In the past I have taken cocktail to mean a ring that is large and ornate, not necessairly tacky. Personally I don''t think my ring looks anything like a cocktail ring, given that the halo is barely there. But if someone wants to call it that bc of it''s size, well then go for it!

Ok... I''m done! Where''s my martini, it''s after 6:00???!!!

Honey, if your ring is a cocktail ring, I''d be more than happy to have a couple!
