gingerB...which part of houston are you in? Grew up in Houston but the moved to S. Cali and now live in Little Saigon. My fiance is half vietnamese, half chinese. I''m hoping that my kids will still speak Vietnamese, but it''s gonna be a challenge since me and my fiance speak english to each other.

What a good idea, Tomatoe!

I am an ABC too, mom is from Hong Kong, father Taiwan. Born and raised in California. I speak very little Chinese, I was such a quiet and introverted little kid that my teachers encouraged my parents to speak only English to me. I sooooo wish I spoke more fluently- I understand 100% of what my mother says to me, but you know moms- she really only says things like ''you need a warmer jacket'' and ''have you eaten!?!''

Hey, Twinkletoes, I''m pretty sure I''ve been to El Pollo Rico.
1.gif
I live in San Jose.

What a small world! Have you always lived in San Jose? Which high school did you go to? I went to Leland!

this is a great thread btw!

I was raised in Los Gatos, I have lived in SJ for 6 years now. In my opinion, "mixie" (that''s what my sis and I call them) babies are stunning. She used to nanny for 3 half Chinese/half Ango-mutt girls, I used to nanny for 2 half black/half Irish kids, they are just gorgeous! My husband is an Anglo-mutt, her BF is Italian American.

I was born in Los Angeles, but both of my parents were born in Korea and moved here to the US before they were 20...so I''m kinda like 2.5 generation. I just got married in Sept to a Canadain born and bred 2nd generation Korean!

Oooooh, cosmopolitan girl! You must be gorgeous!

I am American Born Japanese, 4th generation. Dodger Gurl, here in Hawaii we have beautiful people with ethnic mixes as diverse as yours, and then some. This is the melting pot of the Pacific islands, and I swear we have some of the most diverse cultures and ethnic mixes found anywhere. Some folks I know have up to 8 races each, their kids have 16. They are among some of the most beautiful mixes I''ve ever seen.

Tomatoe, I join in thanking you for your diligence in the SMTR thread. This is a neat thread, one that I can truly relate to.

hi all, i''ve been lurking for a while, but i couldn''t resist this topic...thanks, tomatoe!

i was born in taipei but moved to the states right before i turned 5. i understand a fair amount of mandarin still, but i''m rusty when i speak it, and i''ve forgotten almost all my taiwanese...

mrsfrk and twinkletoes'' parents, we''re neighbors!

i was raised in sj (folks still live near 101 & tully) and now live in los gatos.

my bf is a sandy-haired, blue-eyed all-american boy, and boy, oh boy, everywhere we turn these days, it seems like we''re surrounded by honey-colored babies (our generic term for mixed kids)...can''t wait to add to the pot...

This is a really interesting thread!

Ok, here are my specs:

I''m 28 years old - 100% Chinese. My parents came from Hong Kong and I was born and raised in Canada. Now I"m working and living in the US. I met my bf here in the States and we are both Canadian.

My bf is 1/2 Philipino and 1/2 Pakistani. Interesting mix, eh? I think our kids will look incredible!

tulip - I grew up in SW houston, near sugarlandish area. My BF is hispanic, and I''m hoping my kids''ll speak viet too...but that''s gonna be even tougher for us! I speak much more spanish than my honey speaks viet, and of course we usually speak english to each other. I''m pretty sure they''ll pick up spanish and english from us, but I plan to have my mom babysit alot so that they''ll learn viet (reinforced by me speaking only viet to them). Fingers crossed, hope my plan works! Even though I am proud and happy to be in a racially mixed relationship, I will be sad if my babies don''t carry at least part of my heritage with them. I want them to at least be as fluent in viet as I am (i.e. carry on a decent conversation easily).

p.s. we always joke that we''ll have little fillipino kids since we''re asian and spanish!

How cool! What a small world. I live off of Bascom, just after LG Blvd. turns into Bascom.

My husband is a big blue-eyed white dude, too.

I was born in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Immigrant here when I was barely a year. My parents are from China. I speak a little known chinese dialect called "toi san" (not sure of the spelling).

My finance is Dutch; Jewish; Irish mix, once in a while strangers will comment on how much he looks like the late John F. Kennedy Jr.

Born is Seoul Korea, but came here as a baby. Grew up in Los Angeles and went away to college in the Bay Area- go Bears!
My hubby to be is half 3rd generation Cantonese American and half 4th generation Japanese American so our kids will be like the locals in Hawai''i, a beautiful mixed plate of a little of this and a little bit of that.
My hometown of Cerritos, Calif. is considered to be one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America.

Born in Taiwan, immigrated to the U.S. when I was twelve and have lived in Southern California for over twenty years. Still speak Mandarin and read the Chinese newspapers, but definitely getting rusty at it.

Tulipcloud -- I''m older than you by a few years and still very single, so if you want to compare qualifications as an "old maid" you have nothing on me! :) The prospect of being branded an "old maid" used to bother me, but now that I''m older and wiser, I''ve learned to enjoy the many advantages of being unattached. Congratulations on your impending marriage -- you''re never too old to find happiness!

Im European decent nothing Asian about me. Dutch and German my ansestors were one of the first to settle in this country (USA) in 1600. They settled in a small palce they bought from the Indians with a few beads worth about $25 and they built a wall to keep the British from invading. Eventually they were pushed out of that great deal they got into Penn. , the place they were pushed out of was at that time called New Amsterdam or Manhatten NY the wall still stands its called Wall Street "the finacial district of New York. This line was off my Mothers side its the Brokaw line. Its a pure line that can be traced to the first 10 children that was brought over. Yes, Tom Brokaw is my 7th Cousin. My ansestors fought in every war to protect this country. I have a son that is in the military .
We are a big melting pot here in the USA. I love this country and the blanket of freedom it provides for me.

Im sure some dont feel that way towards the USA, I could not think of a better place to live. It has given me great wealth through hard work and a great place to raise my children.

My son joined the military to make a difference. He was the type of kid that alway defended the ones at school that couldnt protect themselves against the bully''s. He sees this in Iraq.

Pray for world peace

Hey what an interesting post!
35.gif
I am an ABC also, but I've been labeled other things besides that. I grew up in the Midwest speaking broken Toysan which is my parents' dialect. However, my parents speak formal Hong Kong Cantonese to their friends which I understand, but everytime I speak it is Cantonese with a Toysan twang to it. I went to school on the East Coast, and lived in the West Coast. Actually I lived a year in Berkeley for an internship, and then spent four gruelling years working in San Jose. Currently, I live in the Midwest, but we (my husband and I) are trying to move back in the Bay area. These past few days, we've been in the negative digits for temperature. Brrr... My husband was born and raised in San Jose. He went to Prospect High School, and then he went to Berkeley where we met. So any more Cal Bears out there? Go Bears!
I have a pretty eclectic family living everywhere from here (United States), Canada, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. I guess we're like roaches. We go there, breed, and come back another funkier species. I have cousins who are half Chinese and half Cuban. They are just so beautiful.
I studied abroad for a year in Beijing, and prior to that I had studied Mandarin for several years. So I used to know how to speak Mandarin pretty fluently. I also learned to write several thousand characters, but I guess the adage of "use it or lose it" has struck me. It's funny that when I was in China that people always thought I was Korean, Japanese, and everything else but Chinese. Maybe it was the way I dressed as a Westerner. Or maybe they thought I was retarded since I looked Chinese, but I didn't speak as clearly or in the proper pitch. Who knows? They just would think I was pulling their leg if I said I was an ABC.
Funny thing is that when I went to Hong Kong for two weeks on a cross country backpacking trip, people thought I was a peasant from the mainland whenever I spoke my Cantonese with a Toysan twang to it. I spent a week on Hong Kong island staying with a friend's friend who happened to be a psychologist for the Hong Kong International School. These kids had parents who were from other countries working there, but those kids spoke Chinese better than I did so I stayed low key and just spoke English to them the whole time. Then I did a 180 degree turn and stayed on the Kowloon side at the infamous "Chung King Mansions" which by the way is far from it. Anyway, if you ever go visit Beijing then I could recommend some places for you to go to. I always have very fond memories of China, and I would love to share and hear your stories as well.
P.S. Hit me up if you live in the Bay Area and know of any companies looking to expand/hriing. Thanks. Go Bears!

I'm an ABC. Born and raised in SoCal. I can speak Cantonese, however, with a horrible American accent and using English grammar (which apparently leads to hilarious phrases). My parents both immigrated from HK during college altho neither are technically Cantonese. Dad's Shanghainese and mom's Fukinese. I can understand a couple phrases from each dialect cuz I'll hear it from my grandparents every once in a while. I can speak a little mandarin cuz I took it for a couple years in college and cuz it's quite similar to Cantonese (altho Mandarin speakers don't seem to think so). I can also read and sound out Korean (hey, it's an alphabet) altho I have no idea what the words mean cuz I took a year of it in high school.

Lil woman is Chinese/Vietnamese. Only speaks Vietnamese even though her heritage is Tiu Jiao. She was born in Vietnam but raised in America. SF mainly, altho she's down here in SoCal with me right now (trying to drag me back up to the cold of NorCal tho).

codex, I guessed that you''re a Chinese/ Asian from your e-ring colour and clarity choice
