Desperately Seeking Spinel!!

I''d love to see you get one of those sapphires because they look really nice, but what about something like this. http://www.gemrite.com/cubecart/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=48

Hey innerkitten...after my episode today I''m not sure if FF is going to let me even pick out the stone anymore...The smallest one is actually the darker blue one to the far right-FF''s least favorite-also the only one that would likely make a round and he''s thinking that it should end up somewhere around the 1.17 mark...I figured out that something around the .75ct is probably the most comfortable range, but the loss of rough would make that...financially irresponsible on his part.

I definitely want oval or round but could possibly do a square cushion. I figured I''d have a super easy time finding an oval....hahahahahaha.

I do like the spinels on GemRite. I was originally attracted to the biggest blue oval, but decided it was darker than what I want when I saw a different picture of it. I should ask him about that round though, see if I can get another picture and what it looks like there. I''ll go ahead and shoot him an email about that one and ask for another picture.

I''m so discouraged and frustrated.

I couldn''t help but notice this sapphire It''s kind of included though.

and there is also that pale blue sapphire on thegemtrader.com But it might be too pale for you.

I just found out that there is no way that we can afford any of CWMNBN''s sapphires. He''s only going to charge $550 per carat, but he''s thinking that they will run around around 1.20 carats.

I''m surprised that I''m actually really upset about it. I think I really fell for the color of those sapphires.

I''m sorry Freke! I know how much it sucks - I had to go super tiny myself to get what I wanted. Maybe if you save up for a couple more months?

Freke,

Have you contacted Barry Bridgestock? He had some beautiful spinel rough recently, though it might be too dark for you. But it was lovely. That was a few weeks ago- he might have had more come in.

Just a thought! You could have your supernova.

Hey, I found this in some old bookmarks. I''m sure you''ve already seen it but..blue grey spinel
Freke - Why not take a look at this one in person? Sorry to hear about the sapphires (that is gorgeous rough!), but you are "desperately seeking spinel"!

I can''t get onto GemRite. Seems as though his site is down, hopefully not for long so I can go look at what you were looking at.

I looked at that sapphire from The Gem Trader and it looks familiar--probably because I''ve looked at it before. I think it''s really pretty and FF seems to agree. So maybe that''s something to look into as well.

Thank you for your help IK. I really appreciate it.

This 0.98 ct spinel from Art Cut Gems is awfully pretty too.

A pretty moderate purplish blue spinel with very slight gray secondary color. It’s almost eye clean and lightly included at 10 power magnification. It measures approx. 5 x 7 x 3.7 mm. It’s very well cut as a brilliant oval, no window and no treatment of any kind. (All uses, N)

EBree-I emailed him and haven''t heard back. Do you have his contact info? I used the email on ACS. I would love love love to have a supernova.

Hope that's okay to post!

Thanks guys....

MP While saving would ordinarily be a great idea, it''s taken two years to get where we are now. Between books, tuition, and all the other BS FF has to pay for, he''s been scraping pennies to get this much. And it''s only as much as it is because of the stimulus checks. So saving...not going to happen. He goes a little bit further into debt every month. (And he won''t let me contribute!)

Fly Girl That one is on my short list. I think it''s really a beautiful stone-although a little bit smaller than I wanted.

I wrote some more emails to my cutter homies, including CWMNBN, John B., and Dan. We shall see what they have to say as well.

I think it is. Ali just told me that they should be ok with it being posted on the internet. You could probably edit it out just to make sure.

Thank you so much! He was the first person I emailed, and I was really disappointed that he never wrote me back.

Seriously EBree! I could just hug you right now!!!

*Internet hugs!*

He was very prompt with me, so perhaps he checks this email more. He was also very nice! I think if you'd love a supernova, then a supernova is what you should hold out for. I LOVE the supernova, so I know how you feel!

Hang in there, Freke. I know your stone is out there! And holy crap this IS harder than finding a diamond. But.. if it was as easy as finding a diamond, it wouldn''t be so special! But I agree- the colored stone search can become exhausting. In the meantime, I am totally enjoying oogling all of the fabulous stones that have been presented for your consideration.

That sucks about the sapphires, budgets suck

But maybe it will work out in your favor since you really want s spinal. That one above is really pretty.

I am back to crazy hours, so no more gem looking for me for a while, but I would love to "live through" you gem hunt, and will give any opinions that are asked.

Keep us posted.

EBree. I love you.

He's already responded. And sent pictures. OMG.

I'll keep you guys posted.

The top two images are one and the same stone. Color change. The oval is a bit dark....

Thoughts?

Barry Stones Freke.jpg

I LOVE both stones! Barry sent me a pic of the bottom oval, which was the stone I said might be too dark for you. But that top stone, the color change, is beeeeautiful! What''s the size?

I big puffy heart the color change one--it would be like having two different rings in one!

The round is 7.7. Yeek it''s HUGE!

The oval is 7.4x6.1. I think it''s stunning, but the color change....

I''m just scared of the prices...He didn''t give me any info with regards to that...

The color change is so lovely. I love that it''s both blue and violet- the best of both worlds! 7.7mm is what, a ~1.75 ct round, right?

Keep us updated on the price!

Maybe? I asked him what the caratage (hee hee) is on them, so I should find out soon. That was my estimate too though...

Don''t worry, I''ll let you guys know if it''s doable or not...Mostly because if it''s not, I''ll be sobbing all afternoon again and FF will make me hang out on the patio.

What a pretty color change, I like the color change better than the oval. Hope it is in you budget

Both are nice but I prefer the round one. Wait till you see a few more photos though. Something else could pop up too.
I should mention I have a color change spinel and the inconsistency kind of drives me nuts.Mine is a very sparkley lavender indoors but outdoors it loses some sparkle and turns dark blue.

Well. I'm totally conflicted. I'm loving the Barry round. I would like to see it photographed in a more natural setting though. I am also still looking at the blue spinel from CWMNBN... But, Dan should be getting his new spinel rough tomorrow, so I want to see what he's getting, and CWMNBN also has a piece of rough that sounds interesting.

And I have more cutters looking for rough...

...Now all of a sudden I have the possibility of too many stinking stones. Blargh.

I forgot to mention that BOTH of Barry''s stones are in budget.

And the round is 2.25cts and the oval is 1.56cts.

Dude....

Yay for too many options!

I like the round color change, because it's like having 2 stones in one. BUT - I think that oval is absofreakalutlely fabulous. It's a shape you don't often see, as well as a color you don't often see.

Hang in there Freke! You'll find it!

Totally invisioning double claw prongs on that oval, LOL. I'm smitten. On your behalf, of course.

Drooling is fun.

weighing in on this late...but I have been watching this thread. I am SO excited for you Freke!! I LOOOOOOOOOOVE that round color change. I think his work is incredible, and would make your ering just incredible. Good luck with your search!
