Jewelry Store Engagement Diamond

Hey everyone,

I've decided on the following ring.

As for the diamond, I am undecided between the two. The first diamond being a 1.34 H and the second being 1.45 I. Again, the ring will be rose gold. Looking for recommendations/opinions. I've heard about DSS so I am assuming I shouldn't worry about the 1.45 making the ring look too big on her?

Both diamonds are beautiful! I would advise that you put the I also on hold (I hope the hold on H is by you!!) and then ask WF to make a comparison video of the two together so you can compare size and colour. Personally, I would go with the I - I am not colour sensitive, it is a gorgeous stone, and it’s a bit bigger than the H.

Why is that?

take this with a grain of salt, I'm a random person on the Internet.

I prefer how the I looks in the "Brilliance" 360 video. The difference is extremely subtle, and may not be noticeable in real life. The crystal of the H is not as clear. Head-on/near head-on, they look very similar, but there seems to be more (or perhaps larger) scintillation events at extreme angles for the I.

Definitely the 1.451ct with the 54.2/34.9/40.7 combo. Beautiful!

Why is that?

The others have commented on why the I for the sake of the stone, but I would also offer that if you’re setting it in rose gold, that small jump in color may be less noticeable as well. Also DSS. Go for the 1.45 ;)2

The 1.45!

Link below to the comparison of each.

They are both ACA's so both are ideally cut stones, but I'm the dissenter here. I would buy the H based on color. The I has more noticeable tint and the tint is yellow. Make sure you know how a yellow tinted diamond will look in rose gold. I would put a higher color stone (the H) in rose. If you were setting in yellow gold, the I would be my choice. But I'd be more careful about putting a diamond with noticeable yellow tint in a rose gold setting. Just my opinion.
Also, the setting is expensive and you could go custom with someone like DKJ and have a very similar ring designed for less.

Can't go wrong with either as Rockysalamander said! I see more warmth in the I, of course, although I think the ivory color will be lovely in that setting. Just be careful to have them match the side stones. Smaller stones will appear whiter even in the same color grade

I don't mind body color and I like the bigger one. But, you can't go wrong with either.

Since you will be having this set by another vendor, make sure you have insurance in place to cover the stone in shipment and when being set.

Agree about making sure insurance is in place before it is set to the vendor setting it!

I've always heard I color and even K in rose gold will not be noticeable due to the color of the ring.

Again, it's personal preference. If I were putting a lower color diamond in rose gold I'd want the tint to be less on the yellow side and more on the brown side. But I know I'm in the minority about that. Pink and yellow just don't look compatible to me. And if I am going to a K I definitely would want it to be "faint brown" before I put it in rose gold. But again, just my opinion.

Hey everyone,

Appreciate all the insight and responses, it helps hearing other point of views as some of these things I have not thought of.

I decided to put the 1.45 I on hold.

I am however wondering if the ring I decided on is the best option as the image/video shows the diamond sitting higher which may cause things to get caught. I believe I should consider the height of the ring as my GF is an emergency doctor. That means she is constantly working with her hands, putting gloves on and off, etc. From my discussion with her, its 50/50 with people wearing engagement rings at work but I'd like to take this into consideration when finding the ring which will be best for her.

I created a collage of the ring ideas she provided me, many of you have already seen these in a previous post. This time, I added two rings which can be identified by a "1" &"2".

The first ring (1) was not something I initially considered but based upon the photos it looks like it may be a better fit for her style and it sits lower on her hand. I believe this style may reduce the likely hood of the ring catching on things.

The second ring (2) is the original ring I am interested in. I think this is more simplistic, and I really like the design. It does appear to sit higher up and there may be an increased chance of it catching on things.

If anyone works in a hospital type setting, I'd like to hear your experience.

If you guys could provide your thoughts as to which ring is more closely aligned with her style, and would perform best in a hospital setting.

I wanted to repost @Lookinagain because I think this is a great point. While the two settings you posted are pretty I hesitate to justify the price. Especially since I cannot find where they list the quality of diamonds in their settings.

Also, the setting is expensive and you could go custom with someone like DKJ and have a very similar ring designed for less.

While I have not personally had anything made by David Klass many PSers rave about his quality and value. I think it might be worth it to reach out.

PS Glad you put the diamond on hold with WF. Really can’t go wrong there.

The price of the ring without the center stone avg around $2,500 so it isn't incredibly expensive. At this point, the price of the ring isn't a concern unless it starts to exceed $3,500. I've looked at so many rings I'm willing to pay more for a design which meets the mark. As for the floral engagement ring, while I do see how it could match her style, I want to avoid a flower type halo.

I totally understand. Good luck with your search!

I think number 1 is very similar to a combination of two of her inspiration pics. The diamonds also have some extra protection due to the bezels. If it sits lower as well I would go with it. But probably either is fine. Lately there have been some threads about nurses and doctors gloving up with engagement rings and I was surprised to read many wear quite large diamonds.

I know this might complicate things more, but since you mentioned that you were willing to go a bit higher for the right ring, you might look at CvB design inspiration. There are 2 options I thought that might appeal to you there: this one:

or perhaps this one:

I would just point out with the last one that the lower chevron line of diamonds is a band that would work with either ring, and she has a couple of other options that do as well that get a bit more organic. The appealing thing to me about this as on an option is that with 2 bands, you can get a very halo-feeling floral design in a more simple ring. Just thought that flexibility might appeal. And of course, since these are all custom, you can have them done in rose gold, and your classic round diamond is no problem.

All that said, the DKJ ring @WDWDiamond posted is also to die for.

I’m no expert but I like the I color diamond more just because I see striations with the H one. It depends on your SO though. I don’t mind color as much as I do inclusions and graining. I know it’ll be eye clean at a normal viewing distance probably. Just boils down to personal preference. Color vs size and types of inclusion.

Striations or girdle reflection? I can't definitively tell.

Is that what it could be too? Good to know. It bothers me for whatever reason. Based on the side by side video, didn’t really have an effect from a normal viewing distance I think. I just steer clear of it if I see it in online videos.

I have to glove up a lot and I'd recommend something very much low to the hand and a bezel. I really like the floral ring highlighted in comment #79, but I might bezel that middle stone. She'll also want something that is not terribly wide on the hand, as some halo rings can be.

I've seen a much prettier version of this by David Klass, but this would fit her design aesthetic and be very functional.

GreenLake Jewelry makes a lot of lovely floral rings. This design has elements from her inspirations but I think has some classic features.

This is an antique setting, but it may be a good inspiration.

I'm going to repost the Maevona Poppy setting, this has the pave on the shank.

I agree!

I personally wouldn’t do a halo if I had to glove up everyday. I like option 2 of the two you’ve downselected, but it is a bit high off the finger - maybe they could make a custom version?

I just wanted to share. A ring that immediately came to mind is this one from Maytal: it’s low, I think it’s totally her style, and you could have the stones on the band made to be “bright cut”, meaning adding this little rails with tiny milgrain or leave as is. It’s low set, and will be very sturdy for how delicate it is because it’s hand forged

You are such a thoughtful partner! I personally think option 1 is perfect, and will look lovely. I also spent some time looking at your fiancee's mood board and am linking to some rings that hopefully won't sit too high and will fit her style. If they aren't pictures in Rose Gold here, they can be made in RG!

These are so pretty, but for someone that will be pulling gloves on and off, I'd avoid a lot of prongs. It can rip the gloves, but it also pull the prongs and then the stones fall out. Something like this but bezel set would be sturdier.

That's a great point! I wonder if OP can find out if she plans on wearing this daily, or if she'd rather have something more in line with her inspiration pictures? A lot of my healthcare friends only wear wedding bands or rubber ring bands at work.
