Somebody's Gotta Buy This Stone!

I like hearts! I don't prefer them to other cuts but I really like them. They make great pendants.

I wish I liked them more than I do. I consider them a sort of "specialty" cut in that it seems to me that most jewelry folks and collectors generally get other shapes first; then, if they see an amazing heart-shaped specimen, they might buy it. I can probably count on one finger the number of times someone has come to this board to seek help finding a heart-shaped stone...

Personally, I don't think they show most material to its best advantage in a heart cut, and don't really want to pay the price of the extra weight involved. This would be a great new thread, Greg, cause I could keep going...!

I have a slightly-more than one carat heart-shaped mahenge spinel from Tan that has incredible color. Believe me, if I found bigger material in that color and heart-shaped I would snatch it up in a second. I plan to make a ring for my daughter when she gets a bit older. (13? 16?) but yes, I would be highly reticent to have a piece of jewelry made for myself in a heart shape unless the color rocked my world.

Okay, Erin, it is time for show and tell! You have now mentioned a multitude of Mahenges in your possession - if you know what's good for you (trying to make it sound all tough-like, dontchaknow), youll post them to the show me your Mahenges thread pronto! :appl:

Does anyone like heart shaped stones? I'm going to re-phrase that, does anyone prefer heart shaped stones over other cuts?

I like hearts in certain gems BUT I don't prefer them over other cuts.

Its a very feminine cut....so, its not for me.

I would be OK without the cleft though, as it would be more of an acorn.

It is feminine, which is great for females, but not heterosexual men. I think heart shape stones are seriously limited when it comes to potential buyers.

Yes, that looks pretty nice and is already on hold! Not surprising at all.

Hi Minou--

I have the lovely, nearly two carat mahenge from you, the 1 carat heart from tan, and a small pear from TGT. So not a multitude! I will try to get pics up soon :twirl:

The color on that sapphire is beautiful, but I considered it and the pale sapphire for two seconds, and decided to pass...

I do not purposely seek out a heart shaped stone but as a collector, if it has amazing colour and a big size (with a good price), I would not hesitate to buy it.

Gem Trader drop
I did think about a few stones but the ones I like are too small, barely more than 1 ct. :(sad

The demantoid's colour looks sick-ish though, sort of like p*ke.

hmmmm, I guess it really depends on what one has eaten.
The color reminds me of all the colors, I mean flavors of j-ello® made together in one bowl, which then might lead to Chrono's color impression

I'm sure it's much prettier in real life. Barry's camera doesn't capture lighter and yellowish greens very well. My mint garnet looked pale and anemic in his photo but is beautiful and lively in real life. I'm just thinking Barry's cutting skills combined with the properties of demantoid will make an awesome stone, no matter what the color. And it's a plus that it's Russian and has a horsetail.

Both the ACS and Litnon stones are similar in size and price, but the color of the Litnon stone is much better.

I tried really really hard to love a precision cut demantoid by Uli which was slightly yellowish green and whilst I loved the amazing diamond-like dispersion outdoors, nothing could compensate for the pukey indoor colour. :(sad. Origin does not matter if it does not have the colour in the first place. I've also seen Namibian demantoid with horsetail inclusions.

Yes, I'd much rather purchase the Litnon demantoid.

The litnon one does have a lovely color - very similar to my little 3mm electric lime green demantoid. And it looks to be pretty nicely cut. But I still wouldn't write off Barry's because, as I mentioned, his photography doesn't capture greens very well. I think it will be much prettier in person. I might have bought it if I could afford it.

Hehe, I nabbed the umba sapphire on barry's drop, I"ve been waiting to get a sapphire cut by him forever!! Seeing if it might pair will with the blue and red spinels I still haven't set... I also have a really pretty 5mm cushion med dark tsavorite that I still have yet to set or even post pics of, sigh, silly intern year of residency!

S-7695 Umba Sapphire(J) 1.20 cts., 6.4x5.5mm Supernova oval[Gec]. This sapphire from the Umba River Valley of Tanzania has a medium purplish blue color under incandescent light and a nearly pure medium blue color in natural light. It is better than eyeclean, having a few very fine needle-like inclusions. BB

Ooh MTG, soyou're the one who got it! Its very pretty. I really can't buy anything now but can't resist looking.

MTG, please post pics when you get it! I was very tempted by it also!

Okay, we've been talking about it and talking about it, and since its still around, it needs to be posted. This is Michael's Russian demantoid. At .65 cts, it is on the small side, even for a Russian demantoid, but its got color to burn, good clarity and the coveted horsetails. It is a very good price at $780.

I know its been said before, but Someone's Gotta Buy This Stone!

Finally, for a horse of a different color (see how I through that horse connection in there cuz I was just talking about horsetails? :naughty: ), here is another demantoid, this one from Namibia by way of Gemfix. From the photo, it sure looks like this one will have the bluish tone that so many of us seek in Namibians. It appears at least from the pics that its not the most saturated demantoid, but its 1.3 cts and $880. Definitely worth a shot.

I just wanted to highlight two very different demantoids to show the breadth of the stone and differences in location.

Minou, I believe the first stone you posted is the Litnon one we've been referring to. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Yes, that's exactly right - there has been so much discussion of it, but no pictures included, so I was just closing the loop. Plus, I like that it demonstrates how different demantoids can look, back to back with the Namibian. :praise:

VL - love your eye in general, but I haven't even been able to convince myself to look at the stone. Anything with this well-intentioned but horrifying descriptor doesn't go in my collection!

Okay last one for tonight - I've been on a roll! I'm breaking the rules by putting up a stone without knowing the price, since the point of this thread is to show great stones that are a good deal. This one is from Roger Dery and I would imagine it has a significant price tag. If anyone is considering an orange orange spess, consider this one. It is big at 4.67 cts, its Roger's great precision cutting, and it appears to have good clarity, color and saturation. Often Nigerian spess have a strong brown modifier. This one seems to have minimal brown. Definitely worth an inquiry.

My favourite spessartite, cut by Richard Homer, 13.3 mm, $13,000. :$$):
