The LIW Small Talk Thread

Morning everyone!

Whoa, tornado in Enumclaw?! That''s crazy! We missed the really bad weather in Potholes, thankfully!! Though a couple of boats sank on the lake Friday while we were camping. Not good. Huge waves!! I cooked my face...ouchie!

Squirrly! That is a horrible teaser! Get back here!

I watched the premiere of Glee, it was funny! And I love the actress who plays the cheer coach, so I''d watch just for her. Hehe!

picking up my new kitty!
you ladies have any tips for keeping your house cat free/cat safe, good toys foods?

We have 3 cats. He had the oldest since she was just a kitten (18+ years). Our middle is about 4 now. She is full a little shy but has a great purr and the sweetest eyes. Our newest addition is the baby of the group. Adopted him from a shelter. 18 months old & 25 pounds.

Before Grain is a great food. We give the cats each one can in addition to dry food. The higher quality food is a bit more expensive but since we started using it there is fewer problems with upset stomachs.
I can''t remember the dry food we use. In the same aisle in a bright purple bag.

Best thing to do is go to a pet food store. (PetSmart, PetCo, etc. are great for litter and toys but they don''t usually have the higher quality foods). Get something that is higher in protein. Cats are carnivores. They aren''t meant to handle all of the filler corn and grain that so many of the foods have in them.

Our cats are our kids. Same idea for making the house cat-safe too. Keep things like paper clips, rubber bands, loose strings, twist ties, screws, etc. off the floor. They will try to play with them and can get hurt. Also sharp stuff like needles.
Keep pens up too if you care about your furniture or carpet. (lids can and DO come off).
Lilly (our middle kitty) loved to get hold of tubes and chew them. Neosporin, hand lotion, etc. Sharp little kitten teeth go right through.

Another big danger is plastic bags. 2 of our cats love to play in them. (I pick them up but sometimes while unloading stuff they can find one). Just like kids they can get twisted around and suffocate. Or chew and get a piece of plastic stuck. (either suffocate or get further along and cause problems inside)

My cat eats plastic bags then barfs them back up. If you hate cleaning cat puke as much as I do, you learn to keep all plastic hidden!

We feed our cats a high protein food from Veterinarian''s Choice. Don''t know how well it works, though, because our cats are lazy and fat.

See and we feed our boys plain ol'' Friskies and they''re perfectly healthy! Plastic and all...

My cats get Authority, which is PetSmart''s brand. It''s worked really well for them - both have soft coats, plenty of energy, and seem really happy. I try to work in wet food (meaty chunks in gravy) 1-2x per week (that will increase as my budget increases).

Enjoy your kitty! They''re wonderful.

We currently have 4 cats, two oldies and two around 2 years old. My sister is a vet nurse so likes to bring animals home all the time.

I''d get a good kitten food from your vet or from a pet shop, super market stuff is ok but any ''health benifits'' it claims are likely to be BS. If you want to stop your kitten being a fussy eater stick to one kind/flavor of food only, giving them too much choice can make some cats fussy and encorage overeating.

Does the previous owner have the kittens vet records or can you go to the same vet? Kittens need quite a few shots I belive and it would be handy to know what she has and what she still needs.

Only use flea treatments from the vet, some supermarket cheapy brands are poison to cats and if accedently put on them where they can reach can make them very sick..... or dead.

It''s also good to think about the ground rules early on so your kitty dosn''t develop bad habbits. For example, out cats have never been alowed on the table or kitchen bench and learnt so from when we got them so won''t get up there to get food.......except for the one my sister had at her flat when it was a kitten and had no dicipline, he steals food off the bench if you turn your back for 5 seconds.

Anyway, enjoy your new furr baby!

Oh, congrats!!!!! We have two orange tabby munchkins, Archie and Garfield. We rescued them in February -- best V-day gift ever!

I never, ever, ever leave my laptop out (they could munch the cord) and put double-sided tape on the edges of the kitchen counters to keep them off the stove (an accident waiting to happen). We also keep the closet doors closed, always, to keep them away from our clothes.

We splurged on a cat tree -- it''s about 5 ft tall and has four levels -- and they absolutely love it. They also love paper towel tubes, big paper bags, foam balls, wine corks, and anything with catnip or feathers.

We have a love seat by our window, which is a natural perch, but definitely get a window perch if your place isn''t set up like this.

They love Weruva food, Merrick food (this has adorable names like "Turducken," "California Roll" and "Cowboy Cookout"), and Natural Balance food. We give them Whiskas tartar control and dental health treats b/c Archie has bad teeth. It''s definitely worth it to go holistic/natural.

We give them 10 oz of wet food per day, plus half a bowl of dry food (their fave is Natural Balance).

There are worming tablets for cats which they need every few months, same with the seperate flea treatments. I can''t think of an all in one flea, tick and worming treatment but if I were you I''d just take kitty to the vet to get her started on her shots and they''ll definatly tell you there about flea and worming treatments, they may even give her the 1st flea and worming treatments for you while she''s there. Maybe just ring first and ask when she needs her first shot to save you the visit if it''s not yet nessesary.

jcar- Um, what''s a dark chocolate salted caramel and where do I get one? I mean five!

Is it Friday yet? Seriously! This weekend is my 5 day weekend!!!!!

Make that two of us wondering. I had a sample in a store once and they were amazing.

That store doesn''t carry them all the time and I haven''t been able to find them again.

OMG, I''ve had those once and now I can''t remember where to get them. Where do you find them?

THEY ARE AMAZING! All chocolatey and sweet with that nice salty crunch. MMMMMMMMM

CK, my kitties have only had flea treatments once in their lives because a stupid old roommate brought his GF''s flea ridden dog into our place.

They''re indoor kitties though, so they''ve never needed it.

She''s so freakin adorable, I wanna smush her face!!

Mmmmm salted caramels...

I wonder if there is a healthy (okay, relatively healthy) alternative that is just as yummy.

The sugar and calories in those must be huge. (I didn''t read the box)

I don''t know about the rest of you but when I get depressed about waiting for my ring I eat. Especially chocolate & sugar or gooey cheese. I''ve gained 5 pounds in the last 6 weeks.

Don''t feel bad. I eat all the time. All I think about is food and the next thing I''m going to eat. Hence the fact I need to lose 7 pounds. Right now I''m thinking about a bbq chicken wrap with fries from red robin.

Now is it Friday?

Awwww, the new baby is soooooo cute. Cute name too, she will be lots of fun

I eat a all the time too, expect when im sick, like now....gggrrrr....

anyone have tips on what to take so i can be over whater i have, i NEED to feel better by Saturday. C and i were planning on going to this zoo, because Saturday is the last open day where we can pet everything, like zebras and lemars and things like that and i LOVE , LOVE,LOVE to pet animals.

Jessie - Uh oh, what are you sick of? Cold sick?

So my diet coke, half of a plain turkey sandwich and rice cakes isn''t doing the trick. I want some potstickers or nachos.

Feels like a cold, but than i cant breathe, like lungs are closng up so i dont know. Plus anxiety on top of it......gggrrrrr...

Mmmmmm Nachos does sounds good. Wonder if i can whin my way into some
18.gif

Jessie702: If it even potentially has anything to do with sinuses you should try a nettie pot. Yes they are miserable. Not as bad as I was afraid of but still VERY uncomfortable. Kind of like when you go swimming and get water up your nose. But they help. (I hate to admit it because I hate to use them) It is a little less unpleasant if you use water a bit warmer than tepid. Almost like a baby bath water. It helps clear out the stuff causing the irritation.
After that, go for herbal tea & honey.

Be careful with the anxiety part. It can get really scary. Try to relax.

Mmmmmm. Nachos. With a gooey cheese sauce. Like they serve in the deli downstairs..... (I quit bringing cash and checkbook with me -- they don''t take debit so I can''t buy anything.)

Jessie - Ya I''ve also heard those nose things work wonders. Lots of vitamin C! Eating helps so I''d try the whining for nachos for sure! As for your anxiety I too really struggled with it in my early to mid-twenties and as I got older I just learned to cope with it. It''s really mind over matter and you just have to get deep inside your head and tell yourself "you know what, I have control over myself". You''ve got to get that "inner-dialogue" working FOR you and not AGAINST you. I''m sure you''re saying "uh ya ok crazy lady" but seriously you have ultimate power over your mind. Don''t kill yourself with what if this and what if that. I know it''s easier said than done but I''ve honestly been where you are and I tried xanax and counseling and once I quit all that and pinpointed what "triggered" my anxiety I could control it much easier. Sorry sweetie, I know it''s really hard! Hang in there!

Thanks Ladies, im trying to get better. I actually just whined enough to my mom, we work at the same place, and she is getting me lunch. Just a burger and ill have some fruit so i get vitamins.

Part of the anxiety is from comming off of pills. My doc said with everything in my life and comming off of them, my body isnt handling anxiety well. So he has me on meds and says i should be back to normal in about a month or so. But i do have to let things go, its not in my nature to let things go, and to not worry. Its hard to watch tv at times

Thanks for all of the corcern ladies, it sucks being sick.
