I was under the impression that, while people have to pay for Masters degrees, most PhD programs are funded. But I could totally be wrong!

No idea. Haven''t looked into it seriously yet.

Not sure how I''d afford the masters to begin with though.

You should inquire about financial aid! Lots of times my friends in PhD programs have attended classes free-of-charge and received stipend for teaching undergrads...
