Before you rule out PhD, you might talk to some people and see what things are like in the area you want to be in.

For my personal use and suggesting to others, I will not consider anyone who doesn''t have a PhD. (I''ve run into too many MA people who have been no good at what they do and, at least in this area, the PhD people are much easier to find patient reviews)
PhD also leaves open more options including expert witness for court cases and stuff. (not sure if they us MA too or not)
I''m not sure what area you speak of, but I don''t think this is necessarily the case - at least not with this program. PhDs are often times focused on research/testing whereas Master''s level clinicians are more practitioner based. Similarly to Social Work, an MSW specializes in field work rather than PhDs who typically use their doctorate to work in academia: teaching and/or scholarly research.

I wish I had friends to go out to lunch with!
I will go to lunch w/ you. Move here.
The only way we can relocate is if I find a better paying job than J has in another area. He makes double what I do right now, so... not looking good.
He can take my job, I don''t want it! It''s plenty nerdy for him.

Ya then we can all move in next door to each other and it''ll be like Friends part 2!

Bia this is my experience as well. The PhDs are not necessarily practicing, or if they are it's grant and research based.

I think if you can do what you want with a MA then it's worthwhile for you. Especially since you know that the degree, plus being published are the baseline requirements to land a position in the field. personally I'm more interested in abnormal psych and pharmacology so that's where I'd focus and I'd need more than a Masters. Just do me a favor, make sure your practice is in the Boston area so I can come chat with you on a regular basis!

Sounds like a MA is what you want then.

I''ve had friends who stopped at MA and wished later they had PhD. I also know people who love what they do and really needed the PhD to be taken seriously.

I''m not hugely familiar with how things in that field work. I just wanted to pass on what I had been told in case it was helpful.

A PhD is a PhD...definitely nothing to scoff at, but it''s all relative. 5 years is a long time to invest, not to mention the energy that goes into such a degree (and money!). I am open to it, down the road...probably after kids. Or maybe never
