I would like to ask the experts a question. When considering a new fragrance, how long must it stay on/last to be a winner?

Ok, lack of staying power is a deal breaker for me, so I like to be able to smell it for a good 4 hours at least, the longer the better. Also many fragrances transition as they work through the top notes ( the ones you smell on first application) then the heart or middle notes, then finally the dry down. This is why it is so important to not judge a fragrance too quickly, but allow it to sit on your skin for a good half hour to an hour to allow it to reach the dry down before deciding whether you like it or not.

Yes mam, I did know that part. Thankies.

I ask because the very few perfumes I have worn/wear now all last a really, really long time. Yesterday I was in Macy''s, and sprayed meself with EL''s Sensuous. This was at 11:30. I kept smelling until about 1:30-2:00, and it had dried down nicely, which was fine with me, tad strong in the beginning. I then got busy and stopped sniffing myself.
9.gif
At 8:00 I remembered and sniffed. Nothing. Totally gone. Can''t say for sure just when it disappeared, but my other scents last that long, if not longer than that.

May have to try one more time, when I can really pay attention.

HI:

I love many Serge Lutens fragrances, but they don''t last on me at all--hence I have not purchased one in his line--however I may be tempted. Personally, if I can smell a hint of it on my arms in an hour or two, I consider it a winner. Also, I think others noses are quite keen and b/c you cannot recall it, does not mean it isn''t scented by others. Case in point, I was wearing the new fragrance by Fendi (Plazzo)--which is very subtle--and before I got to the counter the other day, the saleslady wanted to know what I was wearing as she loved it! Yet I could hardly detect it on myself.

cheers--Sharon

Interesting Sharon! You may have a point with it being detectable, but not to us.

HI:

I just wanted to mention Lorilei--that this new fragrance has low staying power on me.

boohoo Oh well, it is nice for the first few minutes!

I am not usually a fragrance person, but I really love Un Jardin sur le Nil by Hermès. It is delicious! My husband loves it too!

I tried the Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere, but it wasn''t for me. The bad part is, I really want to love No.5, but it just doesn''t cooperate with my body chemistry in any form. However....has anyone tried the new Chanel ''Beige?'' This one is lovely!! On me, this fragrance has a very creamy, honey-like feel. It''s probably the one Chanel that works on me.

I also recently tried the Diptyque ''Philosykos'' which is a fig fragrance and it is definitely full-bottle worthy! It''s exactly what I have been searching for in a fig fragrance...dry and earthy. My only issue with this one is that it doesn''t have very good lasting power.

Blast!! I did read the staying power wasn''t the greatest with EP....WHY is it perfume manufacturers these days can''t or won''t make a perfume that lasts a reasonable amount of time??? So many of them fade so quickly and for the prices they charge in many cases, I do expect better.

Allistra - I want to try that Hermes fragrance - I actually find Hermes scents do have good staying power compared to many.

OD - I want to try Beige!! I am currently enjoying No 22 very much out of Les Exclusifs....

My husband turned me onto Very Irresistible by Givenchy a couple years ago when he gave it to me for Christmas. I don't quite know how to describe the scent but I'm always receiving compliments from strangers when I wear it (both men and women). My Mom even likes it on me and she's got the most sensitive nose ever! Most fragrances give her an instant headache but she said mine just made her want to stand close and huggle me. LOL
4.gif
I wear it all the time, for all occasions and it seems to have pretty good staying power as well.

Here's Sephora's write up on it:

Very Irresistible Givenchy
An homage to Givenchy's early days when fashion and cinema were intertwined, Very Irresistible Givenchy, unites the elegant tradition of French style with the energy and pop-culture pizazz of American film. Bursting with roses and infused with star anise, and verbena leaf, Very Irresistible Givenchy is a fresh departure from the traditional floral fragrance.

Notes:
Centifolia Rose, Peony Rose, Fantasia Rose, Passion Rose, Emotion Rose, Verbena Leaf, Star Anise.

Style:
Vibrant. Brilliant. Captivating.

I need to try it again to see if it lasts long enough. If so, if I buy that in the next couple weeks, I can get 300.00 worth of makeup for 49.95 with a promo they''re running. Then I have my nieces xmas gift bought!

Sounds lovely! One of the reason I am not really a fragrance person is that it tends to be a migraine trigger for me.

I wanted you to wallop Canuks for me as i am jealous!!!

Little hintie poo for you Miss Ellen, try the lotion also with that perfume, that can help it stick around longer. I am surprised with an EL perfume lacking staying power, they are normally heavy hitters....

GG - I will put that on my list to try!

Allistra, what a pain but that is good there is one you can wear without it triggering migraines.

I soooo luv this thread being that I luv fragrances! My all time favorite is Narciso Rodriguez for her, but since my hubby came home Friday from work with a Sak''s bag and it had the new Chanel # 5 Eau Premiere in it I''m really liking that one right now!!!!! I told him about it the last time we went to Sak''s so he surprised me with it, I also like Bond No. 9 in The Scent Of Peace its very nice! I have a lot more but those are my top 3 for sure! Where did you guys see the Chanel Beige? The Sak''s here in Dallas hasn''t gotten yet and the salespeople did not know if they were even going to get it...
39.gif
Guess I should go the Neiman''s here and see...

Be, you might have to contact a Chanel boutique directly to get Beige, as it is one of the Les Exclusifs line, or I think one of the high end chains might have it, but your best bet is probably to contact a Chanel boutique - thats how I have to get my No 22! * love that stuff*
31.gif

I am still waiting for my Eau Premier sample, EP is being released in the UK tomorrow, so hopefully I will get it soon!

I forgot to mention, I received 2 samples recently, En Avion by Caron and Jasmine et Cigarette by another company. En Avion is a strange brew...Named for flight and created in the 1920''s, it reminds me of bandaids and smoke, with a strong spicy note. More of a perfume you wear for yourself because it is so interesting, rather than the usual ones that you might wear for evening, business etc.

Jasmine et Cigarette had a strong ashtray note that I couldn''t overcome, mixed with waxy smelling jasmine blooms...Not for me at the moment.

Lorelei, thanks so much! We have a boutique here in Dallas so I''ll def go check it out this week! I can''t believe I hadn''t thought of that, me silly

HI:

Ain''t that the truth--and precisely the reason I bought this one--I thought it would be a muted #5 I could wear b/c I like the fragrance. Oh I can wear it all right--douse myself and nada! Honeslty, I gave myself a good spray last night--sat sown beside DH to watch a movie--and absolutely NO reaction from the old man. When I asked whether he liked my fragrance he just looked at me--blank. This is not the ususal reaction I get from him when I''m smellin good!
31.gif

Hope you have better luck than I Miss Lorilei!

, so what does No 22 smell like???
Most welcome, how great is that you have a boutique right there????

Ok No 22....It starts very aldehydic ( which I love) and white flowers, then it dries down to a powdery church incense. The longevity is good, I can get about 4 hours from the EDT, and the sillage is excellent. It is very ladylike, very elegant - try it next time you are in the Chanel boutique!!

Canuks....that is a disappointment....Nothing from the old man? No compliments? Blast. Maybe Chanel need to make this stuff stronger!!

Well, hubby doesn''t like it at all, and there''s something in it I don''t like either, can''t put my finger on what exactly. So scratch that one.
39.gif

But thanks for the hint! It did stay longer this time.

My preferred fragrance is a cheapy. Pink by Lee Stafford. (He's a UK celbrity hairdresser) It's absolutely gorgeous. It has many elements in it, patchouli and vanilla amonsgt others. It really lingers and I have had comments feom guys other than my fiance on how nice I smell when I wear it!

Here is a description of it from his website...

"PiNK Eau de Toilette contains an intense fruity combination of passion fruit, bergamot and cassis which opens to reveal a rich oriental patchouli and vanilla base, brushed with notes of indulgent chocolate, honey and sweet caramel.
Large and in charge!"

It sounds a bit messy, be honestly, it is gorgeous.
